Microbial degradation of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (CHCl2F and CHCl2CF3) in soils and sediments

Hydrodehalogenation of Trichlorofluoromethane over Biogenic Palladium Nanoparticles in Ambient Conditions

Among a number of persistent chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs, or freons), the emissions of trichlorofluoromethane (CFCl₃, CFC-11) have been increasing since 2002. Zero-valent-Pd (Pd⁰) catalysts are known to hydrodehalogenate CFCs; however, most studies rely on cost-inefficient and eco-unfriendly chemical synthesis of Pd⁰NPs and harsh reaction conditions. In this study, we synthesized Pd⁰ nanoparticles (Pd⁰NPs) using D. vulgaris biomass as the support and evaluated hydrodehalogenation of CFC-11 catalyzed by the biogenic Pd⁰NPs. The presence of D. vulgaris biomass stabilized and dispersed 3-6 nm Pd⁰NPs that were highly active. We documented, for the first time, Pd⁰-catalyzed simultaneous hydrodechlorination and hydrodefluorination of CFC-11 at ambient conditions (room temperature and 1 atm). More than 70% CFC-11 removal was achieved within 15 h with a catalytic activity of 1.5 L/g-Pd/h, dechlorination was 50%, defluorination was 41%, and selectivity to fully dehalogenated methane was >30%. The reaction pathway had a mixture of parallel and sequential hydrodehalogenation. In particular, hydrodefluorination was favored by higher H₂ availability and Pd⁰:CFC-11 ratio. This study offers a promising strategy for efficient and sustainable treatment of freon-contaminated water.

Environmental fate of the next generation refrigerant 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234yf)

The hydrofluoroolefin 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234yf) has been introduced to replace 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a) as refrigerant in mobile, including vehicle, air conditioning systems because of its lower global warming potential. HFO-1234yf is volatile at ambient temperatures; however, high production volumes and widespread handling are expected to release this fluorocarbon into terrestrial and aquatic environments, including groundwater. Laboratory experiments explored HFO-1234yf degradation by (i) microbial processes under oxic and anoxic conditions, (ii) abiotic processes mediated by reactive mineral phases and zerovalent iron (Fe(0), ZVI), and (iii) cobalamin-catalyzed biomimetic transformation. These investigations demonstrated that HFO-1234yf was recalcitrant to microbial (co)metabolism and no transformation was observed in incubations with ZVI, makinawite (FeS), sulfate green rust (GR(SO4)), magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)), and manganese oxide (MnO2). Sequential reductive defluorination of HFO-1234yf to 3,3,3-trifluoropropene and 3,3-dichloropropene with concomitant stoichiometric release of fluoride occurred in incubations with reduced cobalamins (e.g., vitamin B12) indicating that biomolecules can transform HFO-1234yf at circumneutral pH and at ambient temperature. Taken together, these findings suggest that HFO-1234yf recalcitrance in aquifers should be expected; however, HFO-1234yf is not inert and a biomolecule may mediate reductive transformation in low redox environments, albeit at low rates.

Degradation rates of CFC-11, CFC-12 and CFC-113 in anoxic shallow aquifers of Araihazar, Bangladesh

Chlorofluorocarbons CFC-11 (CCl(3)F), CFC-12 (CCl(2)F(2)), and CFC-113 (CCl(2)F-CClF(2)) are used in hydrology as transient tracers under the assumption of conservative behavior in the unsaturated and saturated soil zones. However, laboratory and field studies have shown that these compounds are not stable under anaerobic conditions. To determine the degradation rates of CFCs in a tropical environment, atmospheric air, unsaturated zone soil gas, and anoxic groundwater samples were collected in Araihazar upazila, Bangladesh. Observed CFC concentrations in both soil gas and groundwater were significantly below those expected from atmospheric levels. The CFC deficits in the unsaturated zone can be explained by gas exchange with groundwater undersaturated in CFCs. The CFC deficits observed in (3)H/(3)He dated groundwater were used to estimate degradation rates in the saturated zone. The results show that CFCs are degraded to the point where practically no (<5%) CFC-11, CFC-12, or CFC-113 remains in groundwater with (3)H/(3)He ages above 10 yr. In groundwater sampled at our site CFC-11 and CFC-12 appear to degrade at similar rates with estimated degradation rates ranging from approximately 0.25 yr(-1) to approximately 6 yr(-1). Degradation rates increased as a function of reducing conditions. This indicates that CFC dating of groundwater in regions of humid tropical climate has to be carried out with great caution.

Reductive dechlorination of chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons in sewage sludge and aquifer sediment microcosms

The reductive transformation of the 10 most-widely distributed fluorinated volatile compounds and of tetrachloroethene was investigated for up to 177 days under anaerobic conditions in sewage sludge and aquifer sediment slurries. Concentrations of parent compounds and of degradation products were identified by GC-MS. We observed transformation of CFC-11 to HCFC-21 and HCFC-31, of CFC-113 to HCFC-123a, chlorotrifluoroethene and trifluoroethene, of CFC-12 to HCFC-22, of HCFC-141b to HCFC-151b, and of tetrachloroethene to vinyl chloride and ethene. CFC-114, CFC-115, HCFC-142b, HFC-134a and HCFC-22 were not transformed. The results suggest that with both inocula studied here, hydrogenolysis is the primary reductive dechlorination reaction. CFC-113 was the only compound where a dichloro-elimination was observed, leading to the formation of chlorotrifluoroethene as temporal intermediate and to trifluoroethene as end product. The relative reduction rates of chlorofluoromethanes compared reasonably well with theoretical rates calculated based on thermochemical data according to the Marcus theory. Some of the accumulating HCFCs and haloethenes observed in this study are toxic and may be of practical relevance in anaerobic environments.

Inhibition of Methane Oxidation by Methylococcus capsulatus with Hydrochlorofluorocarbons and Fluorinated Methanes

The inhibition of methane oxidation by cell suspensions of Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath) exposed to hydrochlorofluorocarbon 21 (HCFC-21; difluorochloromethane [CHF(inf2)Cl]), HCFC-22 (fluorodichloromethane [CHFCl(inf2)]), and various fluorinated methanes was investigated. HCFC-21 inhibited methane oxidation to a greater extent than HCFC-22, for both the particulate and soluble methane monooxygenases. Among the fluorinated methanes, both methyl fluoride (CH(inf3)F) and difluoromethane (CH(inf2)F(inf2)) were inhibitory while fluoroform (CHF(inf3)) and carbon tetrafluoride (CF(inf4)) were not. The inhibition of methane oxidation by HCFC-21 and HCFC-22 was irreversible, while that by methyl fluoride was reversible. The HCFCs also proved inhibitory to methanol dehydrogenase, which suggests that they disrupt other aspects of C(inf1) catabolism in addition to methane monooxygenase activity.
