Development and application of a new scheme of phages for typing and differentiating Salmonella strains from different sources

A set of 25 phages for typing and differentiating Salmonella strains from different origins (food, water, and disease outbreaks) is described. All the strains were typeable by use of the phages, whereas by the serological method more than 5% of the strains could not be classified. By using the phage typing scheme, 75 phage types were established, and all the results were reproducible 1 and 6 months later. Some phages were serotype and serogroup specific, which may be useful in additional tests for the identification of strains of some Salmonella serotypes. In addition, the strains responsible for an outbreak possessed the same phage type, which implies the potential epidemiological use of these phages.

Reduced set of phages for typing salmonellae

A set composed of 27 phages is described for differentiating Salmonella spp. representative of groups A, B, C1, C2, D1, D2, E1, E2, E3, E4, G1, K, and N. All of the 1,245 cultures used in this effort were typable and were differentiated on the basis of the 420 phage patterns observed. All results were reproducible. Characteristic phage patterns were produced by a variety of Salmonella serovars isolated from campus incidents and a number of hospital, family, restaurant, and processing plant outbreaks to indicate an existing epidemiological relationship.

Bacteriophage typing scheme for Salmonella infantis

A bacteriophage typing system is described for Salmonella infantis. Nine phages were selected, of which three were isolated from sewage and six from human feces. All except 7 of the 546 strains collected between 1974 and 1978 could be classified into 23 different phage types. The five most common phage types comprised 26, 13, 9, 9, and 9% of all strains, respectively. Strains from humans, animals, food, and water isolated during nine episodes, or from given patients at different intervals of time, belonged to the same phage type.

Bacteriophage typing of Salmonella weltevreden

Salmonella weltevreden has been found to be one of the commonest Salmonella serotypes isolated from diverse sources in India and has also been isolated in a number of other countries. A phage typing scheme was developed for this serotype using a set of six typing phages. These phages had been selected out of 146 phage strains isolated and purified from stool samples of man, laboratory animals and other animals, sewage and surface water sources, and the lytic mutants of temperate phages form S. weltevreden. The phage typing scheme was applied systematically to type the 946 strains from India isolated during 1958-1974 and 148 strains originating from Australia, Burma, England, Gan Island, Holland, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, The Philippines, Thailand, The United States and Vietnam during 1953-1971. The scheme was particularly studied to evaluate its utility in mapping the epidemiologically related strains from various sources. The S. weltevreden strains could be classified into ten phage types. Phage types 2 and 7 were found exclusively amongst Indian strains, type 6 from Vietnam and type 8 from Burma, Thailand and Vietnam. Phage types were found to be stable and consistent with the independent epidemiological data available.

Single phage-typing set for differentiating salmonellae

A phage-typing system is described for characterizing commonly isolated salmonellae. Fifty-eight serovars representative of groups A, B, C1, C2, D, E1, E2, E3, and E4 were delineated by using a single set of 50 phages isolated from sewage. All of the 735 cultures used in this effort were typable and were distinguished and differentiated on the basis of the 347 phage patterns observed. All results were reproducible. Characteristic phage patterns were produced by a variety of Salmonella serovars isolated from a campus incident and a number of hospital and family outbreaks to indicate an existing epidemiological relationship.

Phage typing set for group C1 and C2 Salmonellae

Fifteen common serotypes representative of group C(1) and C(2)Salmonella were characterized using a single set of phages.
