Draft Genome Sequence of Hydrocarbon-Degrading Enterobacter cloacae Strain S1:CND1, Isolated from Crude Oil-Contaminated Soil from the Noonmati Oil Refinery, Guwahati, Assam, India

Ubiquitousness of Haloferax and Carotenoid Producing Genes in Arabian Sea Coastal Biosystems of India

This study presents a comparative analysis of halophiles from the global open sea and coastal biosystems through shotgun metagenomes (n = 209) retrieved from public repositories. The open sea was significantly enriched with Prochlorococcus and Candidatus pelagibacter. Meanwhile, coastal biosystems were dominated by Marinobacter and Alcanivorax. Halophilic archaea Haloarcula and Haloquandratum, predominant in the coastal biosystem, were significantly (p < 0.05) enriched in coastal biosystems compared to the open sea. Analysis of whole genomes (n = 23,540), retrieved from EzBioCloud, detected crtI in 64.66% of genomes, while cruF was observed in 1.69% Bacteria and 40.75% Archaea. We further confirmed the viability and carotenoid pigment production by pure culture isolation (n = 1351) of extreme halophiles from sediments (n = 410 × 3) sampling at the Arabian coastline of India. All red-pigmented isolates were represented exclusively by Haloferax, resistant to saturated NaCl (6 M), and had >60% G + C content. Multidrug resistance to tetracycline, gentamicin, ampicillin, and chloramphenicol were also observed. Our study showed that coastal biosystems could be more suited for bioprospection of halophiles rather than the open sea.

Analysis of column reactor results with organic decay by native organic microbiota and varying permeability

Field bio-remediation techniques (FBRT) can be a low cost method to avoid the removal of top layers of soil which are rich in organic matter and bio diversity. The use of native microorganisms in FBRT is preferable because non-indigenous species can transfer their genetic material to the environment with negative impacts on the local ecological equilibrium. Petroleum Produced Water (PPW) is an important pollutant source in onshore production areas. However, due to high sodium concentrations in PPW and the occurrence of organic matter in dissolved and dispersed forms, obtaining pollutant transport parameters may be a difficult task. Results of column tests performed using a natural soil permeated by PPW are presented. All the samples presented a permeability decrease over time and the total hydrocarbon petroleum (TPH) breakthrough curves presented evidence of biological decay. Soil samples underwent biological characterization after tests (Metagenomic analyses and cultural media tests). Curves were modelled in an incremental way using a non-constant decay rate to better simulate the growing process of the microorganisms and consider the occurrence of varying velocity/permeability. Biological characterization results indicate the native organisms that are potentially more able to degrade PPW, including four bacteria (Bacillus and Lysinibacillus genus) and two fungi species (Malassezia and Talaromyces genus) that have not previously been mentioned in the consulted literature. The obtained results contribute to the development of more sustainable FBRTs focusing on native microorganisms, already adapted to the local environmental conditions.

The dissemination of multidrug-resistant Enterobacter cloacae throughout the UK and Ireland

Enterobacter cloacae is a clinically important Gram-negative member of the Enterobacteriaceae, which has increasingly been recognized as a major pathogen in nosocomial infections. Despite this, knowledge about the population structure and the distribution of virulence factors and antibiotic-resistance determinants of this species is scarce. In this study, we analysed a systematic collection of multidrug-resistant E. cloacae isolated between 2001 and 2011 from bloodstream infections across hospitals in the UK and Ireland. We found that the population is characterized by the presence of multiple clones formed at widely different time periods in the past. The clones exhibit a high degree of geographical heterogeneity, which indicates extensive dissemination of these E. cloacae clones across the UK and Ireland. These findings suggest that a diverse, community-based, commensal population underlies multidrug-resistant E. cloacae infections within hospitals.
