Draft Genome Sequence of Pseudomonas frederiksbergensis SI8, a Psychrotrophic Aromatic-Degrading Bacterium

Metagenome-Assembled Genomes of 12 Bacterial Species from Biofouled Plastic Fabrics Harbor Multiple Genes for Degradation of Hydrocarbons

We report the metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) of 12 different bacterial species recovered from environmental microbiomes associated with biofouled plastic fabrics. The MAGs have estimated sizes of 2.53 to 7.66 Mb with 3,229 to 9,289 proteins, 26.20% to 99.1% genome completeness, 48.9% to 72.6% G+C content, and multiple genes for hydrocarbon degradation.

GC-MS hydrocarbon degradation profile data of Pseudomonas frederiksbergensis SI8, a bacterium capable of degrading aromatics at low temperatures

The ability of the psychrotrophic bacterium Pseudomonas frederiksbergensis SI8 to grow and degrade aromatic hydrocarbons efficiently at low temperature is shown in this study. The robust growth of P. frederiksbergensis SI8 was demonstrated in jet fuel and an aromatic blend. The bacterium showed 2.5 to 3-fold faster growth in the aromatic blend than in jet fuel. The hydrocarbons degradation profile of P. frederiksbergensis SI8 at ambient temperature (i.e., 28 °C) and low temperature (i.e., 4 °C) was characterized by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis. GC–MS data demonstrated that P. frederiksbergensis SI8 is a novel psychrotrophic bacterium with the ability to degrade aromatic hydrocarbons at temperatures as low as 4 °C. Specifically, P. frederiksbergensis SI8 consumed toluene, ethylbenzene, n-propylbenzene and methyl ethyl benzene efficiently. The data presented here serves to characterize the hydrocarbon degradation profile of P. frederiksbergensis SI8 and corroborates the capacity of this bacterium to degrade aromatic hydrocarbons at low temperatures. Bioprospecting for microbes with potential hydrocarbon remediation activity on the northwest coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, using DNA sequencing

Coastal environments harbor diverse microbial communities, which can contain genera with potential bioremediation activity. Next-generation DNA sequencing was used to identify bacteria to the genus level in water and sediment samples collected from the open ocean, shoreline, wetlands and freshwater upwellings on the northwest coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Supported by an extensive literature review, a phylogenetic investigation of the communities was done using reconstruction of unobserved states software (PICRUSt) to predict metagenome functional content from the sequenced 16S gene in all the samples. Bacterial genera were identified for their potential hydrocarbon bioremediation activity. These included generalist genera commonly reported in hydrocarbon-polluted areas and petroleum reservoirs, as well as specialists such as Alcanivorax and Cycloclasticus. The highest readings for bacteria with potential hydrocarbon bioremediation activity were for the genera Vibrio, Alteromonas, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Burkholderia, Acidovorax and Pseudoalteromonas from different environments in the study area. Some genera were identified only in specific sites; for example, Aquabacterium and Polaromonas were found only in freshwater upwellings. Variation in genera distribution was probably due to differences in environmental conditions in the sampled zones. Bacterial diversity was high in the study area and included numerous genera with known bioremediation activity. Functional prediction of the metagenome indicated that the studied bacterial communities would most probably degrade toluene, naphthalene, chloroalkane and chloroalkene, with lower degradation proportions for aromatic hydrocarbons, fluorobenzoate and xylene. Differences in predicted degradation existed between sediments and water, and between different locations.

Complete genome sequence of Pseudomonas frederiksbergensis ERDD5:01 revealed genetic bases for survivability at high altitude ecosystem and bioprospection potential

Pseudomonas frederiksbergensis ERDD5:01 is a psychrotrophic bacteria isolated from the glacial stream flowing from East Rathong glacier in Sikkim Himalaya. The strain showed survivability at high altitude stress conditions like freezing, frequent freeze-thaw cycles, and UV-C radiations. The complete genome of 5,746,824 bp circular chromosome and a plasmid of 371,027 bp was sequenced to understand the genetic basis of its survival strategy. Multiple copies of cold-associated genes encoding cold active chaperons, general stress response, osmotic stress, oxidative stress, membrane/cell wall alteration, carbon storage/starvation and, DNA repair mechanisms supported its survivability at extreme cold and radiations corroborating with the bacterial physiological findings. The molecular cold adaptation analysis in comparison with the genome of 15 mesophilic Pseudomonas species revealed functional insight into the strategies of cold adaptation. The genomic data also revealed the presence of industrially important enzymes.

Draft Genome Sequence of Pseudomonas stutzeri Strain 19, an Isolate Capable of Efficient Degradation of Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Pseudomonas stutzeri strain 19 is a Gram-negative bacterium capable of degrading aromatic hydrocarbons. The draft genome of P. stutzeri 19 is estimated to be 5.1 Mb, containing 4,652 protein-coding genes and a G+C content of 63.3%. Multiple genes responsible for the degradation of aromatics are present in this strain.
