Interspecies Social Spreading: Interaction between Two Sessile Soil Bacteria Leads to Emergence of Surface Motility

Pseudomonas aeruginosa surface motility and invasion into competing communities enhance interspecies antagonism

Chronic polymicrobial infections involving Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are prevalent, difficult to eradicate, and associated with poor health outcomes. Therefore, understanding interactions between these pathogens is important to inform improved treatment development. We previously demonstrated that P. aeruginosa is attracted to S. aureus using type IV pili (TFP)-mediated chemotaxis, but the impact of attraction on S. aureus growth and physiology remained unknown. Using live single-cell confocal imaging to visualize microcolony structure, spatial organization, and survival of S. aureus during coculture, we found that interspecies chemotaxis provides P. aeruginosa a competitive advantage by promoting invasion into and disruption of S. aureus microcolonies. This behavior renders S. aureus susceptible to P. aeruginosa antimicrobials. Conversely, in the absence of TFP motility, P. aeruginosa cells exhibit reduced invasion of S. aureus colonies. Instead, P. aeruginosa builds a cellular barrier adjacent to S. aureus and secretes diffusible, bacteriostatic antimicrobials like 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide (HQNO) into the S. aureus colonies. Reduced invasion leads to the formation of denser and thicker S. aureus colonies with increased HQNO-mediated lactic acid fermentation, a physiological change that could complicate treatment strategies. Finally, we show that P. aeruginosa motility modifications of spatial structure enhance competition against S. aureus. Overall, these studies expand our understanding of how P. aeruginosa TFP-mediated interspecies chemotaxis facilitates polymicrobial interactions, highlighting the importance of spatial positioning in mixed-species communities.

IMPORTANCE

The polymicrobial nature of many chronic infections makes their eradication challenging. Particularly, coisolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus from airways of people with cystic fibrosis and chronic wound infections is common and associated with severe clinical outcomes. The complex interplay between these pathogens is not fully understood, highlighting the need for continued research to improve management of chronic infections. Our study unveils that P. aeruginosa is attracted to S. aureus, invades into neighboring colonies, and secretes anti-staphylococcal factors into the interior of the colony. Upon inhibition of P. aeruginosa motility and thus invasion, S. aureus colony architecture changes dramatically, whereby S. aureus is protected from P. aeruginosa antagonism and responds through physiological alterations that may further hamper treatment. These studies reinforce accumulating evidence that spatial structuring can dictate community resilience and reveal that motility and chemotaxis are critical drivers of interspecies competition.

Interspecies surfactants serve as public goods enabling surface motility in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

In most natural environments, bacteria live in polymicrobial communities where secreted molecules from neighboring species alter bacterial behaviors, including motility, but such interactions are understudied. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a motile opportunistic pathogen that exists in diverse multispecies environments, such as the soil, and is frequently found in human wound and respiratory tract co-infections with other bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus. Here, we show that P. aeruginosa can co-opt secreted surfactants from other species for flagellar-based surface motility. We found that exogenous surfactants from S. aureus, other bacteria, and interkingdom species enabled P. aeruginosa to switch from swarming to an alternative surface spreading motility on semi-solid surfaces and allowed for the emergence of surface motility on hard agar where P. aeruginosa was otherwise unable to move. Although active flagellar function was required for surface spreading, known motility regulators were not essential, indicating that surface spreading may be regulated by an as yet unknown mechanism. This motility was distinct from the response of most other motile bacterial species in the presence of exogenous surfactants. Mutant analysis indicated that this P. aeruginosa motility was similar to a previously described mucin-based motility, "surfing," albeit with divergent regulation. Thus, our study demonstrates that secreted surfactants from the host as well as neighboring bacterial and interkingdom species act as public goods facilitating P. aeruginosa flagella-mediated surfing-like surface motility, thereby allowing it to access different environmental niches.

IMPORTANCE

Bacterial motility is an important determinant of bacterial fitness and pathogenesis, allowing expansion and invasion to access nutrients and adapt to new environments. Here, we demonstrate that secreted surfactants from a variety of foreign species, including other bacterial species, infection hosts, fungi, and plants, facilitate surface spreading motility in the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa that is distinct from established motility phenotypes. This response to foreign surfactants also occurs in Pseudomonas putida, but not in more distantly related bacterial species. Our systematic characterization of surfactant-based surface spreading shows that these interspecies surfactants serve as public goods to enable P. aeruginosa to move and explore environmental conditions when it would be otherwise immotile.

Compatible Consortium of Endophytic Bacillus halotolerans Strains Cal.l.30 and Cal.f.4 Promotes Plant Growth and Induces Systemic Resistance against Botrytis cinerea

Evaluating microbial-based alternatives to conventional fungicides and biofertilizers enables us to gain a deeper understanding of the biocontrol and plant growth-promoting activities. Two genetically distinct Bacillus halotolerans strains (Cal.l.30, Cal.f.4) were evaluated for the levels of their compatibility. They were applied individually or in combination under in vitro and greenhouse conditions, using seed bio-priming and soil drenching as inoculum delivery systems, for their plant growth-promoting effect. Our data indicate that application of Cal.l.30 and Cal.f.4 as single strains and as a mixture significantly enhanced growth parameters of Arabidopsis and tomato plants. We investigated whether seed and an additional soil treatment with these strains could induce the expression of defense-related genes in leaves of young tomato seedling plants. These treatments mediated a long lasting, bacterial-mediated, systemic-induced resistance as evidenced by the high levels of expression of RP3, ACO1 and ERF1 genes in the leaves of young tomato seedlings. Furthermore, we presented data showing that seed and soil treatment with B. halotolerans strains resulted in an effective inhibition of Botrytis cinerea attack and development on tomato leaves. Our findings highlighted the potential of B. halotolerans strains as they combine both direct antifungal activity against plant pathogens and the ability to prime plant innate immunity and enhance plant growth.

Plant-associated Bacillus mobilizes its secondary metabolites upon perception of the siderophore pyochelin produced by a Pseudomonas competitor

Bacillus velezensis is considered as model species for plant-associated bacilli providing benefits to its host such as protection against phytopathogens. This is mainly due to the potential to secrete a wide range of secondary metabolites with specific and complementary bioactivities. This metabolite arsenal has been quite well defined genetically and chemically but much remains to be explored regarding how it is expressed under natural conditions and notably how it can be modulated upon interspecies interactions in the competitive rhizosphere niche. Here, we show that B. velezensis can mobilize a substantial part of its metabolome upon the perception of Pseudomonas, as a soil-dwelling competitor. This metabolite response reflects a multimodal defensive strategy as it includes polyketides and the bacteriocin amylocyclicin, with broad antibiotic activity, as well as surfactin lipopeptides, contributing to biofilm formation and enhanced motility. Furthermore, we identified the secondary Pseudomonas siderophore pyochelin as an info-chemical, which triggers this response via a mechanism independent of iron stress. We hypothesize that B. velezensis relies on such chelator sensing to accurately identify competitors, illustrating a new facet of siderophore-mediated interactions beyond the concept of competition for iron and siderophore piracy. This phenomenon may thus represent a new component of the microbial conversations driving the behavior of members of the rhizosphere community.

Rahnella aquatilis JZ-GX1 alleviates iron deficiency chlorosis in Cinnamomum camphora by secreting desferrioxamine and reshaping the soil fungal community

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria are important for improving plant iron nutrition, but the interactions among inoculants, host plants and soil microorganisms have not been greatly explored. Rahnella aquatilis JZ-GX1 was applied to treat the increasingly serious iron deficiency chlorosis in Cinnamomum camphora, and the resulting improvement in chlorosis was determined by assessing the contents of chlorophyll, active iron, Fe²⁺ and antioxidant enzymes in leaves, the effects on the soil microbial community and the metabolism in the rhizosphere by high-throughput sequencing techniques and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The results showed that inoculation with JZ-GX1 significantly increased the chlorophyll content of C. camphora, which promoted the redistribution of active iron in roots and leaves, increased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and thus reduced membrane damage in iron-deficient C. camphora caused by reactive oxygen species. According to genome prediction and ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) analysis, the JZ-GX1 strain could secrete desferrioxamine (DFO), and the concentration of DFO in C. camphora rhizosphere was 21-fold higher than that in uninoculated soil. The exogenous application of DFO increased the SPAD and Fe²⁺ contents in leaves. In addition, the inoculant affected the fungal community structure and composition in the C. camphora rhizosphere soil and increased the abundances of specific taxa, such as Glomus, Mortierella, Trichoderma, and Penicillium. Therefore, R. aquatilis JZ-GX1 application promoted iron absorption in C. camphora trees by secreting DFO and alleviated iron deficiency chlorosis through interactions with the local fungal community.

A Noninvasive Method for Time-Lapse Imaging of Microbial Interactions and Colony Dynamics

Complex interactions between microbial populations can greatly affect the overall properties of a microbial community, sometimes leading to cooperation and mutually beneficial coexistence, or competition and the death or displacement of organisms or subpopulations. Interactions between different biofilm populations are highly relevant in diverse scientific areas, from antimicrobial resistance to microbial ecology. The utilization of modern microscopic techniques has provided a new and interesting insight into how bacteria interact at the cellular level to form and maintain microbial biofilms. However, our ability to follow complex intraspecies and interspecies interactions in vivo at the microscopic level has remained somewhat limited. Here, we detailed BacLive, a novel noninvasive method for tracking bacterial growth and biofilm dynamics using high-resolution fluorescence microscopy and an associated ImageJ processing macro (https://github.com/BacLive) for easier data handling and image analysis. Finally, we provided examples of how BacLive can be used in the analysis of complex bacterial communities.

IMPORTANCE Communication and interactions between single cells are continuously defining the structure and composition of microbial communities temporally and spatially. Methods routinely used to study these communities at the cellular level rely on sample manipulation which makes microscopic time-lapse experiments impossible. BacLive was conceived as a method for the noninvasive study of the formation and development of bacterial communities, such as biofilms, and the formation dynamics of specialized subpopulations in time-lapse experiments at a colony level. In addition, we developed a tool to simplify the processing and analysis of the data generated by this method.

Physical characteristics of mixed-species swarming colonies

In nature, bacterial collectives typically consist of multiple species, which are interacting both biochemically and physically. Nonetheless, past studies on the physical properties of swarming bacteria were focused on axenic (single-species) populations. In bacterial swarming, intricate interactions between the individuals lead to clusters, rapid jets, and vortices that depend on cell characteristics such as speed and length. In this work, we show the first results of rapidly swarming mixed-species populations of Bacillus subtilis and Serratia marcescens, two model swarm species that are known to swarm well in axenic situations. In mixed liquid cultures, both species have higher reproduction rates. We show that the mixed population swarms together well and that the fraction between the species determines all dynamical scales-from the microscopic (e.g., speed distribution), mesoscopic (vortex size), and macroscopic (colony structure and size). Understanding mixed-species swarms is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the bacterial swarming phenomenon and its biological and evolutionary implications.

Putting microbial interactions back into community contexts

Microbial interactions are key aspects of the biology of microbiomes. Recently, there has been a shift in the field towards studying interactions in more representative contexts, whether using multispecies model microbial communities or by looking at interactions in situ. Across diverse microbial systems, these studies have begun to identify common interaction mechanisms. These mechanisms include interactions related to toxic molecules, nutrient competition and cross-feeding, access to metals, signaling pathways, pH changes, and interactions within biofilms. Leveraging technological innovations, many of these studies have used an interdisciplinary approach combining genetic, metabolomic, imaging, and/or microfluidic techniques to gain insight into mechanisms of microbial interactions and into the impact of these interactions on microbiomes.

Exploration of social spreading reveals behavior is prevalent among Pedobacter and P. fluorescens isolates, and shows variations in induction of phenotype

Within soil, bacteria are found in multi-species communities, where interactions can lead to emergent community properties. Studying bacteria in a social context is critical for investigation of community-level functions. We previously showed that co-cultured Pseudomonas fluorescens Pf0-1 and Pedobacter sp. V48 engage in interspecies social spreading (ISS) on a hard agar surface, a behavior which required close contact and depended on the nutritional environment. Here, we investigate whether social spreading is widespread among P. fluorescens and Pedobacter isolates, and whether the requirements for interaction vary. We find that this phenotype is not restricted to the interaction between P. fluorescens Pf0-1 and Pedobacter sp. V48, but is a prevalent behavior found in one clade in the P. fluorescens group and two clades in the Pedobacter genus. We show that the interaction with certain Pedobacter isolates occurred without close contact, indicating induction of spreading by a putative diffusible signal. As with ISS by Pf0-1+V48, motility of interacting pairs is influenced by the environment, with no spreading behaviors (or induction of motility) observed under high nutrient conditions. While Pf0-1+V48 require low nutrient but high NaCl conditions, in the broader range of interacting pairs the high salt influence was variable. The prevalence of motility phenotypes observed here and found within the literature indicates that community-induced locomotion in general, and social spreading in particular, is likely important within the environment. It is crucial that we continue to study microbial interactions and their emergent properties to gain a fuller understanding of the functions of microbial communities. Importance Interspecies social spreading (ISS) is an emergent behavior observed when P. fluorescens Pf0-1 and Pedobacter sp. V48 interact, during which both species move together across a surface. Importantly, this environment does not permit movement of either individual species. This group behavior suggests that communities of microbes can function in ways not predictable by knowledge of the individual members. Here we have asked whether ISS is widespread and thus potentially of importance in soil microbial communities. The significance of this research is the demonstration that surface spreading behaviors are not unique to the Pf0-1-V48 interaction, but rather is a more widespread phenomenon observed among members of distinct clades of both P. fluorescens and Pedobacter isolates. Further, we identify differences in mechanism of signaling and nutritional requirements for ISS. Emergent traits resulting from bacterial interactions are widespread and their characterization is necessary for a complete understanding of microbial community function.

Sessile bacterium unlocks ability of surface motility through mutualistic interspecies interaction

In addition to their common planktonic lifestyle, bacteria frequently live in surface-associated habitats. Surface motility is essential for exploring these habitats for food sources. However, many bacteria are found on surfaces, even though they lack features required for migrating along surfaces. How these canonical non-motile bacteria adapt to the environmental fluctuations on surfaces remains unknown. Here, we report a previously unknown surface motility mode of the canonical non-motile bacterium, Dietzia sp. DQ12-45-1b, which is triggered by interaction with a dimorphic prosthecate bacterium, Glycocaulis alkaliphilus 6B-8T. Dietzia cells exhibits 'sliding'-like motility in an area where the strain Glycocaulis cells was pre-colonized with a sufficient density. Our analysis also demonstrates that Dietzia degrade n-alkanes and provide Glycocaulis with the resulting metabolites for survival, which in turn induced directional migration of Dietzia towards nutrient-rich environments. Such interaction-triggered migration was also found between Dietzia and Glycocaulis strains isolated from other habitats, suggesting that this mutualistic relationship ubiquitously occurs in natural environments. In conclusion, we propose a novel model for such a 'win-win' strategy, whereby non-motile bacteria pay metabolites to dimorphic prosthecate bacteria in return for migrating to seek for nutrients, which may represent a common strategy for canonically non-motile bacteria living on a surface.

Heterogeneous bacterial swarms with mixed lengths

Heterogeneous systems of active matter exhibit a range of complex emergent dynamical patterns. In particular, it is difficult to predict the properties of the mixed system based on its constituents. These considerations are particularly significant for understanding realistic bacterial swarms, which typically develop heterogeneities even when grown from a single cell. Here, mixed swarms of cells with different aspect ratios are studied both experimentally and in simulations. In contrast with previous theory, there is no macroscopic phase segregation. However, locally, long cells act as nucleation cites, around which aggregates of short, rapidly moving cells can form, resulting in enhanced swarming speeds. On the other hand, high fractions of long cells form a bottleneck for efficient swarming. Our results suggest a physical advantage for the spontaneous heterogeneity of bacterial swarm populations.

La milpa como modelo para el estudio de la microbiodiversidad e interacciones planta-bacteria

La microbiología agrícola busca reemplazar a los agroquímicos por microorganismos o sus productos como agentes de control biológico, debido a que el uso de tecnologías de la revolución verde tiene efectos negativos sobre el ambiente, los productores y sus familias, los consumidores y la salud de los cultivos. Sin embargo, el conocimiento actual acerca de las interacciones benéficas planta-bacteria en ambientes complejos es limitado e insuficiente, para lograr el éxito esperado de los productos biológicos. Las milpas son agroecosistemas tradicionales donde se cultivan diversas variedades de maíz nativo con otras especies asociadas; no se utiliza riego, ni labranza y aunque su aplicación va en aumento, comúnmente no se utilizan agroquímicos; por esto, la milpa representa una fuente de conocimiento sobre prácticas sustentables. Recientemente, se han descrito cambios en las comunidades microbianas de los sistemas agrícolas a causa de la modernización y a la domesticación de las plantas. En la milpa, también se han identificado interacciones benéficas planta-bacteria que parecen haberse perdido en los cultivos modernos. En esta revisión, discutimos las estrategias clásicas y modernas de la microbiología agrícola que pueden ser aplicadas en el estudio de la milpa. El establecimiento de la milpa como modelo de estudio de las interacciones planta-bacteria puede resultar en la generación del conocimiento necesario para disminuir el uso de agroquímicos en los sistemas agrícolas modernos, así como evitar su creciente uso en las milpas.

Bacillus Responses to Plant-Associated Fungal and Bacterial Communities

Some members of root-associated Bacillus species have been developed as biocontrol agents due to their contribution to plant protection by directly interfering with the growth of pathogens or by stimulating systemic resistance in their host. As rhizosphere-dwelling bacteria, these bacilli are surrounded and constantly interacting with other microbes via different types of communications. With this review, we provide an updated vision of the molecular and phenotypic responses of Bacillus upon sensing other rhizosphere microorganisms and/or their metabolites. We illustrate how Bacillus spp. may react by modulating the production of secondary metabolites, such as cyclic lipopeptides or polyketides. On the other hand, some developmental processes, such as biofilm formation, motility, and sporulation may also be modified upon interaction, reflecting the adaptation of Bacillus multicellular communities to microbial competitors for preserving their ecological persistence. This review also points out the limited data available and a global lack of knowledge indicating that more research is needed in order to, not only better understand the ecology of bacilli in their natural soil niche, but also to better assess and improve their promising biocontrol potential.

The contest of microbial pigeon neighbors: Interspecies competition between Serratia marcescens and the human pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans

In nature, microorganisms often exhibit competitive behavior for nutrients and limited space, allowing them to alter the virulence determinants of pathogens. The human pathogenic yeast Cryptococcus neoformans can be found organized in biofilms, a complex community composed of an extracellular matrix which confers protection against predation. The aim of this study was to evaluate and characterize antagonistic interactions between two cohabiting microorganisms: C. neoformans and the bacteria Serratia marcescens. The interaction of S. marcescens with C. neoformans expressed a negative effect on biofilm formation, polysaccharide capsule, production of urease, and melanization of the yeast. These findings evidence that competition in mixed communities can result in dominance by one species, with direct impact on the physiological modulation of virulence determinants. Such an approach is key for understating the response of communities to the presence of competitors and, ultimately, rationally designing communities to prevent and treat certain diseases.

Flower-like patterns in multi-species bacterial colonies

Diverse interactions among species within bacterial colonies lead to intricate spatiotemporal dynamics, which can affect their growth and survival. Here, we describe the emergence of complex structures in a colony grown from mixtures of motile and non-motile bacterial species on a soft agar surface. Time-lapse imaging shows that non-motile bacteria 'hitchhike' on the motile bacteria as the latter migrate outward. The non-motile bacteria accumulate at the boundary of the colony and trigger an instability that leaves behind striking flower-like patterns. The mechanism of the front instability governing this pattern formation is elucidated by a mathematical model for the frictional motion of the colony interface, with friction depending on the local concentration of the non-motile species. A more elaborate two-dimensional phase-field model that explicitly accounts for the interplay between growth, mechanical stress from the motile species, and friction provided by the non-motile species, fully reproduces the observed flower-like patterns.

Metabolic Signaling and Spatial Interactions in the Oral Polymicrobial Community

Oral supra- and subgingival biofilms are complex communities in which hundreds of bacteria, viruses, and fungi reside and interact. In these social environments, microbes compete and cooperate for resources, such as living space and nutrients. The metabolic activities of bacteria can transform their microenvironment and dynamically influence the fitness and growth of cohabitating organisms. Biofilm communities are temporally and spatially organized largely due to cell-to-cell communication, which promotes synergistic interactions. Metabolic interactions maintain biofilm homeostasis through mutualistic cross-feeding, metabolic syntrophy, and cross-respiration. These interactions include reciprocal metabolite exchanges that promote the growth of physiologically compatible bacteria, processive catabolism of complex substrates, and unidirectional interactions that are globally important for the polymicrobial community. Additionally, oral bacterial interactions can lead to detoxification of oxidative compounds, which will provide protection to the community at large. It has also been established that specific organisms provide terminal electron acceptors to partner species that result in a shift from fermentation to respiration, thus increasing ATP yields and improving fitness. Indeed, many interspecies relationships are multidimensional, and the net outcome can be spatially and temporally dependent. Cross-kingdom interactions also occur as oral yeast are antagonistic to some oral bacteria, while numerous mutualistic interactions contribute to yeast-bacterial colonization, fitness in the oral community, and the pathogenesis of caries. Consideration of this social environment reveals behaviors and phenotypes that are not apparent through the study of microbes in isolation. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of the metabolic interactions that shape the oral microbial community.

Delivering "Chromatic Bacteria" Fluorescent Protein Tags to Proteobacteria Using Conjugation

Recently, we published a large and versatile set of plasmids, the chromatic bacteria toolbox, to deliver eight different fluorescent protein genes and four combinations of antibiotic resistance genes to Gram-negative bacteria. Fluorescent tags are important tools for single-cell microbiology, synthetic community studies, biofilm, and host-microbe interaction studies. Using conjugation helper strain E. coli S17-1 as a donor, we show how plasmid conjugation can be used to deliver broad host range plasmids, Tn5 transposons delivery plasmids, and Tn7 transposon delivery plasmids into species belonging to the Proteobacteria. To that end, donor and recipient bacteria are grown under standard growth conditions before they are mixed and incubated under non-selective conditions. Then, transconjugants or exconjugant recipients are selected on selective media. Mutant colonies are screened using a combination of tools to ensure that the desired plasmids or transposons are present and that the colonies are not containing any surviving donors. Through conjugation, a wide range of Gram-negative bacteria can be modified without prior, often time-consuming, establishment of competent cell and electroporation procedures that need to be adjusted for every individual strain. The here presented protocol is not exclusive for the delivery of Chromatic bacteria plasmids and transposons, but can also be used to deliver other mobilizable plasmids to bacterial recipients.

Introducing THOR, a Model Microbiome for Genetic Dissection of Community Behavior

The manipulation and engineering of microbiomes could lead to improved human health, environmental sustainability, and agricultural productivity. However, microbiomes have proven difficult to alter in predictable ways, and their emergent properties are poorly understood. The history of biology has demonstrated the power of model systems to understand complex problems such as gene expression or development. Therefore, a defined and genetically tractable model community would be useful to dissect microbiome assembly, maintenance, and processes. We have developed a tractable model rhizosphere microbiome, designated THOR, containing Pseudomonas koreensis, Flavobacterium johnsoniae, and Bacillus cereus, which represent three dominant phyla in the rhizosphere, as well as in soil and the mammalian gut. The model community demonstrates emergent properties, and the members are amenable to genetic dissection. We propose that THOR will be a useful model for investigations of community-level interactions.

The quest to manipulate microbiomes has intensified, but many microbial communities have proven to be recalcitrant to sustained change. Developing model communities amenable to genetic dissection will underpin successful strategies for shaping microbiomes by advancing an understanding of community interactions. We developed a model community with representatives from three dominant rhizosphere taxa, the Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. We chose Bacillus cereus as a model rhizosphere firmicute and characterized 20 other candidates, including “hitchhikers” that coisolated with B. cereus from the rhizosphere. Pairwise analysis produced a hierarchical interstrain-competition network. We chose two hitchhikers, Pseudomonas koreensis from the top tier of the competition network and Flavobacterium johnsoniae from the bottom of the network, to represent the Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, respectively. The model community has several emergent properties, induction of dendritic expansion of B. cereus colonies by either of the other members, and production of more robust biofilms by the three members together than individually. Moreover, P. koreensis produces a novel family of alkaloid antibiotics that inhibit growth of F. johnsoniae, and production is inhibited by B. cereus. We designate this community THOR, because the members are the hitchhikers of the rhizosphere. The genetic, genomic, and biochemical tools available for dissection of THOR provide the means to achieve a new level of understanding of microbial community behavior.
