Second-Generation Manganese(III) Porphyrins Bearing 3,5-Dichloropyridyl Units: Innovative Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalysts for the Epoxidation of Alkenes

The synthesis, characterisation and homogeneous catalytic oxidation results of two manganese(III) porphyrins of the so-called second-generation of metalloporphyrin catalysts, containing one or four 3,5-dichloropyridyl substituents at the meso positions are reported for the first time. The catalytic efficiency of these novel manganese(III) porphyrins was evaluated in the oxidation of cyclooctene and styrene using aqueous hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant, under homogeneous conditions. High conversions were obtained in the presence of both catalysts, obtaining the corresponding epoxide as the major product. The asymmetric metalloporphyrin, chloro[5,10,15-tris(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-20-(3,5-dichloropyridin-4-yl)porphyrinate]manganese(III), CAT-4, evidences a similar activity to that obtained with the well-known and highly efficient second-generation metalloporphyrin catalyst, chloro[5,10,15,20-tetrakis(2,6-dichlorophenyl)porphyrinate]manganese(III), CAT-2. CAT-4 was covalently attached onto Merrifield resin and 3-bromopropylsilica supports. The solid materials obtained were characterized by several techniques including diffuse reflectance, UV—VIS spectrophotometry, SEM and XPS. The catalytic results for the oxidation of cyclooctene and styrene using the immobilized catalysts are also presented. The Merrifield-supported catalyst showed to be very efficient, leading to five catalytic cycles in the oxidation of cyclooctene, using tert-butyl hydroperoxide as the oxidant.

Transition metal complexes and the activation of dioxygen

In order to address how diverse metalloprotein active sites, in particular those containing iron and copper, guide O₂binding and activation processes to perform diverse functions, studies of synthetic models of the active sites have been performed. These studies have led to deep, fundamental chemical insights into how O₂coordinates to mono- and multinuclear Fe and Cu centers and is reduced to superoxo, peroxo, hydroperoxo, and, after O-O bond scission, oxo species relevant to proposed intermediates in catalysis. Recent advances in understanding the various factors that influence the course of O₂activation by Fe and Cu complexes are surveyed, with an emphasis on evaluating the structure, bonding, and reactivity of intermediates involved. The discussion is guided by an overarching mechanistic paradigm, with differences in detail due to the involvement of disparate metal ions, nuclearities, geometries, and supporting ligands providing a rich tapestry of reaction pathways by which O₂is activated at Fe and Cu sites.

Metalloporphyrins as biomimetic models for cytochrome p-450 in the oxidation of atrazine

The aim of this work was to evaluate whether metalloporphyrin models could mimic the action of cytochrome P-450 in the oxidation of atrazine, a herbicide. The commercially available second-generation metalloporphyrins 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(2,6-dichlorophenyl)porphyrin metal(III) chloride [M(TDCPP)Cl] and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin metal(III) chloride [M(TFPP)Cl] (metal = Fe or Mn) and the oxidants iodosylbenzene and metachloroperbenzoic acid were employed in this study. Results showed that the metalloporphyrins used here can oxidize atrazine. Yields as high as 32% were obtained for the Mn(TFPP)Cl/PhIO system, which shows that these catalysts can mimic both the in vivo and the in vitro action of cytochrome P-450, with formation of the metabolites DEA and DIA. The formation of five other unknown products was also detected, but only one of them could be identified, since the other four were present in very low concentrations. The compound COA, identified by mass spectrometry, was the main product in most of the oxidation reactions.
