Abstract
Metal hydroborates and their derivatives have been receiving attention as potential solid-state ion conductors for battery applications owing to their impressive electrochemical and mechanical characteristics. However, to date only a fraction of these compounds has been investigated as solid-state electrolytes. Here, MB12H11NH3 (M = Li and Na) hydroborates are synthesized and investigated as electrolyte materials for all-solid-state batteries. The room temperature α-NaB12H11NH3 was structurally solved in P212121 (a = 7.1972(3) Å, b = 9.9225(4) Å, and c = 14.5556(5) Å). It shows a polymorphic structural transition near 140 °C to cubic Fm3̄m. LiB12H11NH3 and NaB12H11NH3 exhibit cationic conductivities of σ(Li+) = 3.0 × 10-4 S cm-1 and σ(Na+) = 1.2 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 200 °C. Hydration is found to improve ionic conductivity of the hydroborates. It is presumed that modest ionic conductivities could be due to a lack of significant re-orientational dynamics in the crystal structure resulting from the presence of the bulky -NH3 group in the anion.

Abstract
In this work, we studied lead(II) and cobalt(II) complexation of derivatives [2-B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2N3]2- and [2-B10H9O(CH2)5N3]2- of the closo-decaborate anion containing pendant azido groups in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2'-bipyridyl. Mononuclear [PbL2{An}] and binuclear [Pb2L4(NO3)2{An}] lead complexes (where {An} is the N3-substituted boron cluster) were isolated and studied by IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The mononuclear lead(II) complex [Pb(phen)2[B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2N3] and the binuclear lead(II) complex [Pb2(phen)4(NO3)2[B10H9O(CH2)5)N3] were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In complex [Pb2(phen)4(NO3)2[B10H9O(CH2)5)N3], the boron cluster is coordinated by the metal atom only via the 3c2e MHB bonds. In complex [Pb(phen)2[B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2N3], the coordination environment of the metal includes BH groups of the boron cluster and the oxygen atom of the exo-polyhedral substituent. When the reaction was performed in a CH3CN/water mixture, the binuclear lead(II) complex [(Pb(bipy)NO3)(Pb(bipy)2NO3)(B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2N3)]·CH3CN·H2O was isolated, where the boron cluster acts as a bridging ligand between lead atoms coordinated by the boron cage via the O atoms of the substituent and/or the BH groups. In the course of cobalt(II) complexation, the starting compound (Ph4P)2[B10H9O(CH2)5N3] was isolated and its structure was also determined by X-ray diffraction. Although a number of lead(II) complexes with coordinated N3 are known from the literature, no complexes with the boron cluster coordinated by the pendant N3 group involved in the metal coordination have been isolated.

Abstract
Although Lipscomb predicted in 1977 that supra-icosahedral boron clusters would be viable, their synthesis has been impeded by the unavailability of appropriate synthetic methodologies. Herein, we report the first examples of the open 16-vertex oblato-hypho-titanaborane clusters [(Cp*Ti)2B14H17R] (1: R = H; 2: R = Me) having a non-Wadean 19-skeletal-electron-pair count. Interestingly, these clusters show a six-membered [Ti2B4] open face, which could lead to closo-19-vertex clusters.

Abstract
Penta-iodination of the B2-6 positions of the {CB11} monocarborane cluster is reported. Products of the structure [2,3,4,5,6-I5-CB11H6-12-X]- (X = H, Me, Et, Ph, Br, I) were obtained and fully characterized. X-ray crystal structures of three new compounds confirm this particular substitution pattern. The synthetic method relies on palladium catalysis/B-H activation, assisted by the C1-COOH directing group. The one-pot procedure enables penta-iodination and subsequent decarboxylation under convenient conditions. The B2-6 regioselectivity is complementary to the commonly observed reactivity of {CB11} clusters, which follows the trend B12 > B7-11 > B2-6 for electrophilic substitution. Thus, for the first time upper-belt halogenation is achieved without prior modification of the lower-belt positions.

Abstract
Mixed-ligand lead(II) complexes with 2,2′-bipyridyl and [B10H9OH]2− or monosubstituted hydroxy-substituted closo-decaborate anions with a pendant hydroxy group, separated from the boron cage by an alkoxylic spacer of different lengths [B10H9O(CH2)xO(CH2)2OH]]2− (x = 2 or 5) have been synthesized. Compounds have been characterized by IR and multinuclear NMR spectroscopies. The structures of binuclear complex [Pb(bipy)2[B10H9OH]]2·CH3CN (1·CH3CN), mononuclear complex [Pb(bipy)2[B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2OH]]·0.5bipy·CH3CN (2·0.5bipy·CH3CN), and polymeric complex [Pb(bipy)[B10H9O(CH2)5O(CH2)2OH]]n (3) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In all three compounds, the co-ordination polyhedra of lead(II) are formed by N atoms from two bipy molecules, O atoms of the substituent attached to the boron cage, and BH groups of the boron cage.

Abstract
The geometries and energetics of the n-vertex polyhedral dicobaltadithiaboranes and dicobaltadiselenaboranes Cp2Co2E2Bn−4Hn−4 (E = S, Se; n = 8 to 12) have been investigated via the density functional theory. Most of the lowest-energy structures in these systems are generated from the (n + 1)-vertex most spherical closo deltahedra by removal of a single vertex, leading to a tetragonal, pentagonal, or hexagonal face depending on the degree of the vertex removed. In all of these low-energy structures, the chalcogen atoms are located at the vertices of the non-triangular face. Alternatively, the central polyhedron in most of the 12-vertex structures can be derived from a Co2E2B8 icosahedron with adjacent chalcogen (E) vertices by breaking the E–E edge and 1 or more E–B edges to create a hexagonal face. Examples of the arachno polyhedra with two tetragonal and/or pentagonal faces derived from the removal of two vertices from isocloso deltahedra were found among the set of lowest-energy Cp2Co2E2Bn−4Hn−4 (E = S, Se; n = 8 and 12) structures.

Abstract
Herein, we present a chemically robust and efficient synthesis route for B(9)-OH-o-carboranes by the oxidation of o-carboranes with commercially available 68% HNO3 under the assistance of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (HOTf) and hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP). The reaction is highly efficient with a wide scope of carboranes, and the selectivity of B(9)/B(8) is up to 98:2. The success of this transformation relies on the strong electrophilicity and oxidizability of HNO3, promoted through hydrogen bonds of the Brønsted acid HOTf and the solvent HFIP. Mechanism studies reveal that the oxidation of o-carborane involves an initial electrophilic attack of HNO3 to the hydrogen atom at the most electronegative B(9) of o-carborane. In this transformation, the hydrogen atom of the B-H bond is the nucleophilic site, which is different from the electrophilic substitution reaction, where the boron atom is the nucleophilic site. Therefore, this is an oxidation-reduction reaction of o-carborane under mild conditions in which N(V) → N(III) and H(-I) → H(I). The derivatization of 9-OH-o-carborane was further examined, and the carboranyl group was successfully introduced to an amino acid, polyethylene glycol, biotin, deoxyuridine, and saccharide. Undoubtedly, this approach provides a selective way for the rapid incorporation of carborane moieties into small molecules for application in boron neutron capture therapy, which requires the targeted delivery of boron-rich groups.

Abstract
This review systematizes data on the coordination ability of mono- and disubstituted derivatives of boron cluster anions and carboranes in complexation with transition metals. Boron clusters anions [BnHn]2–, monocarborane anions [CBnHn–1]–, and dicarboranes [C2BnHn–2] (with non-functionalized carbon atoms) (n = 10, 12) containing the B–X exo-polyhedral bonds (X = N, O, S, Hal) are discussed. Synthesis and structural features of complexes known to date are described. The effect of complexing metal and substituent attached to the boron cage on the composition and structures of the final complexes is analyzed. It has been established that substituted derivatives of boron cluster anions and carboranes can act as both ligands and counterions. A complexing agent can coordinate substituted derivatives of the boron cluster anions due to three-center two-electron 3c2e MHB bonds, by the substituent functional groups, or a mixed type of coordination can be realized, through the BH groups of the boron cage and the substituent. As for B-substituted carboranes, complexes with coordinated substituents or salts with non-coordinated carborane derivatives have been isolated; compounds with MHB bonding are not characteristic of carboranes.

Abstract
Exploration of new organometallic systems based on polyhedral boron clusters has the potential to solve challenging chemical problems such as the stabilization of reactive intermediates and transition-state-like species postulated for E-H (E = H, B, C, Si) bond activation reactions. We report on facile and clean B-H activation of a hydroborane by a new iridium boron cluster complex. The product of this reaction is an unprecedented and fully characterized transition metal-stabilized boron cation or borenium. Moreover, this intermediate bears an unusual intramolecular B···H interaction between the hydrogen originating from the activated hydroborane and the cyclometallated metal-bonded boron atom of the boron cluster. This B···H interaction is proposed to be an arrested insertion of hydrogen into the Bcage-metal bond and the initiation step for iridium "cage-walking" around the upper surface of the boron cluster. The "cage-walking" process is supported by the hydrogen-deuterium exchange observed at the boron cluster, and a mechanism is proposed on the basis of theoretical methods with a special focus on the role of noncovalent interactions. All new compounds were isolated and fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Key compounds were studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Abstract
The Cu(OTf)2/NBS-mediated tandem reaction of 1-cinnamyl alcohol-o-carboranes for the synthesis of C-alkenyl-o-carboranes has been developed. Mechanism studies demonstrated that the Cu(OTf)2-promoted ring opening of oxetane with electron-rich arenes as soft nucleophiles was involved and was the key step for the transformation. This work provided an alternative strategy for the synthesis of C-alkenyl-o-carboranes, which has an important reference for the synthesis of o-carborane derivatives with diversity.

Abstract
Abstract
In this work, the cobalt(II) complexation with 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) in the presence of the [trans-B20H18]2– anion has been studied. At a Co : Phen = 1 : 2 ratio in acetonitrile, a binuclear cobalt(II) complex with bridging chlorine atoms and the boron cluster anion as a counterion [(Phen)2Co(µ-Cl)2Co(Phen)2][trans-B20H18] has been isolated. However, during slow crystallization (within a month), spontaneous isomerization of [trans-B20H18]2– into [iso-B20H18]2– is observed. It has been established by X-ray diffraction analysis that in the crystal of the final compound [(Phen)2Co(µ-Cl)2Co(Phen)2][trans-B20H18]1/3[iso-B20H18]2/3, co-crystallization of both isomeric forms of the octadecahydroeicosaborate anion is observed for the first time. The presence of the iso form of the boron cluster anion is also confirmed by IR spectroscopy data: the spectrum of the product shows a band of stretching vibrations of the BHB bridge groups at 1773 cm–1, which is absent in the trans-form of the boron cluster.

Abstract
A series of novel conjugates of cobalt bis(dicarbollide) and closo-dodecaborate with curcumin were synthesized by copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition. These conjugates were tested for antibacterial activity. It was shown that all derivatives are active when exposed to Bacillus cereus ATCC 10702 and are not active against Gram-negative microorganisms and Candida albicans at the maximum studied concentration of 1000 mg/L. The conjugate of alkynyl-curcumin with azide synthesized from the tetrahydropyran derivative of cobalt bis(dicarbollide) exhibited activity against Gram-positive microorganisms: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 and the clinical isolate MRSA 17, that surpassed curcumin by 2–4 times.

Abstract
Abstract
Solvent-free copper(I) and thallium(I) compounds of the general formula [M2[B10H10]] have been synthesized. The compounds have been identified by IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. According to X-ray diffraction data, the structures of both compounds are three-dimensional frameworks. In copper(I) complex [Cu2[B10H10]]n, the formation of three-center M–H–B bonds is observed. In thallium(I) compound Tl2[B10H10], the bond between cations and anions is ionic, which is confirmed by IR spectroscopy data. The Hirschfeld surface analysis of the boron cluster anion was performed for both compounds to identify and analyze intramolecular interactions.

Abstract
Data on compounds based on cage structures―boron clusters (polyhedral boron hydrides, carboranes, metallacarboranes) and compounds of the adamantane series, which possess physiological activity, have been generalized. The main emphasis is placed on the antiviral activity of the compounds. The mechanism of the possible action of the replication inhibitors of influenza A virus strains is considered, the molecular model of viroporin inhibitors is discussed. The proposed model consists of a cage hydrophobic core that performs the function of a membranotropic carrier (a boron cluster or adamantane fragment), into which physiologically active functional groups are introduced. The relationship between the structure of the cage compound with the introduced substitute and the biologically active properties of this molecular structure has been analyzed.

Abstract
A simple and efficient method was developed for the one-pot synthesis of 3-aryl derivatives of ortho-carborane with sensitive functional groups using 3-iodo-ortho-carborane and aryl zinc bromides that were generated in situ. A series of 3-aryl-ortho-carboranes, including those containing nitrile and ester groups, 3-RC6H4-1,2-C2B10H11 (R = p-Me, p-NMe2, p-OCH2OMe, p-OMe, o-CN, p-CN, o-COOEt, m-COOEt, p-COOEt) was synthesized using this approach. The solid-state structures of 3-RC6H4-1,2-C2B10H11 (R = p-OMe, o-CN, and p-CN) were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The intramolecular hydrogen bonding involving the ortho-substituents of the aryl ring and the CH and BH groups of carborane was discussed.
