Nanoplatform-Integrated Miniaturized Solid-Phase Extraction Techniques: A Critical Review

Preparation of the biological samples is one of the most critical steps in sample analysis. In past decades, the liquid-liquid extraction technique has been used to extract the desired analytes from complex biological matrices. However, solid-phase extraction (SPE) gained popularity due to versatility, simplicity, selectivity, reproducibility, high sample recovery %, solvent economy, and time-saving nature. The superior extraction efficiency of SPE can be attributed to the development of advanced techniques, including the nanosorbents technology. The nanosorbent technology significantly simplified the sample preparation, improved the selectivity, diversified the application, and accelerated the sample analysis. This review critically expands on the to-date advancements reported in SPE with particular regards to the nanosorbent technology.

Synthesis and application of alginate immobilised banana peels nanocomposite in rare earth and radioactive minerals removal from mine water

This study describes the preparation, characterisation and application of pelletised immobilised alginate/montmorillonite/banana peels nanocomposite (BPNC) in a fixed-bed column for continuous adsorption of rare earth elements and radioactive minerals from water. The materials was characterised by Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analyses. Analyses indicated that the pellets are porous and spherical in shape. FT-IR analysis showed that the functional groups responsible for the coordination of metal ions were the carboxylic (-COO-) and siloxane (Si-O-Si and Si-O-Al) groups. XRD analysis showed two additional peaks which were attributed to alginate and montmorillonite. The influence of the initial concentration, bed depth and flow rate were investigated using synthetic and real mine water in order to determine the breakthrough behaviour of both minerals. The processed bed volume, adsorbent exhaustion rate and service time, were also explored as performance indices for the adsorbent material. Furthermore, the breakthrough data were fitted to both the Thomas and Bohart-Adams models. The BPNC exhibited high affinity for U, Th, Gd and La in the real mine water sample. However, studies may still be required using waters from different environments in order to determine the robustness of BPNC.

Solid-phase extraction of iridium from soil and water samples by using activated carbon cloth prior to its spectrophotometric determination

A solid-phase extraction method for separation and preconcentration of Ir(IV) ion by using activated carbon cloth (ACC) has been presented. Ir(IV) as their 1-(2-pyridylazo) 2-naphtol (PAN) chelate was adsorbed on ACC at pH 2.0 and was eluted from ACC with acidic dimethylformamide (DMF). The Ir(IV) concentration was determined at 536 nm as Ir(IV)-PAN complex by using UV-vis spectrophotometer. The analytical parameters including pH, sample and eluent flow rates, amount of PAN, eluent type, concentration, and sample volume were optimized. The effects of foreign ions on the recoveries of iridium were also investigated. The preconcentration factor was calculated as 60. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) of the method were found as 0.039 and 0.129 μg L(-1), respectively. The method was applied to soil and water samples for iridium determination.
