This review aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the current landscape of POCT, emphasizing its growing significance within clinical practice. Subsequently, the current status of the combination of MNPs in the Biological detection has been presented. Furthermore, it delves into the specific domain of MNP-based biosensors, assessing their potential impact on POCT. By combining existing research and spotlighting pivotal discoveries, this review enhances our comprehension of the advancements and promising prospects offered by MNP-based biosensors in the context of POCT. It seeks to facilitate informed decision-making among healthcare professionals and researchers while also promoting further exploration in this promising field of study.

Current trends in digital camera-based bioassays for point-of-care tests

Point-of-care and bedside tests are analytical devices suitable for a growing role in the current healthcare system and provide the opportunity to achieve an exact diagnosis by an untrained person and in various conditions and sites where it is necessary. Using a digital camera integrated into a well-accessible device like a smartphone brings a new way in which a colorimetric point-of-care diagnostic test can provide unbiased data. This review summarizes basic facts about the colorimetric point-of-care tests, principles of how to use a portable device with a camera in the assay, applications of digital cameras for the current tests, and new devices described in the recent papers. An overview of the recent literature and a discussion of recent developments and future trends are provided.

Recent Developments in the Detection of Organic Contaminants Using Molecularly Imprinted Polymers Combined with Various Analytical Techniques

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) encompass a diverse array of polymeric matrices that exhibit the unique capacity to selectively identify a designated template molecule through specific chemical moieties. Thanks to their pivotal attributes, including exceptional selectivity, extended shelf stability, and other distinct characteristics, this class of compounds has garnered interest in the development of highly responsive sensor systems. As a result, the incorporation of MIPs in crafting distinctive sensors and analytical procedures tailored for specific analytes across various domains has increasingly become a common practice within contemporary analytical chemistry. Furthermore, the range of polymers amenable to MIP formulation significantly influences the potential utilization of both conventional and innovative analytical methodologies. This versatility expands the array of possibilities in which MIP-based sensing can be employed in recognition systems. The following review summarizes the notable progress achieved within the preceding seven-year period in employing MIP-based sensing techniques for analyte determination.

Sulfonamide drugs: Low-cost spectrofluorometric determination using a computer monitor calibrator for detection

A possibility of the use of a common monitor calibrator as a portable and inexpensive tool for the fluorometric determination of sulfonamide drugs after their reaction with fluorescamine was examined. The luminescence measurements with a calibrator are based on irradiation of a test sample by the device lamp with a broadband spectrum in the visible and near UV regions and simultaneous registration of the secondary radiation by the device detector. Two types of cuvettes with black light absorbing sides eliminating the reflected self-radiation were tested. The commercially available Eppendorf-type black plastic microtubes ("LightSafe") were suggested as a good option for such measurements. It was shown that a monitor calibrator can be applied for optimization of the determination conditions. By the example of sulfanilamide and sulfamethazine, it was shown that the procedure should be carried out at pH 4-6 and fluorescamine concentration of 200 μmol L^-1, and 40 min of the interaction. The limit of detection of sulfanilamide and sulfamethazine using a monitor calibrator is 0.9 μmol L^-1 and 0.8 μmol L^-1, respectively, which is comparable with their spectrophotometric determination.

Aqueous Two-Phase Systems Based on Cationic and Anionic Surfactants Mixture for Rapid Extraction and Colorimetric Determination of Synthetic Food Dyes

In this study, aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) containing a cationic and anionic surfactants mixture were used for the preconcentration of the synthetic food dyes Allura Red AC, Azorubine, Sunset Yellow, Tartrazine, and Fast Green FCF. A rapid, simple, low cost, affordable, and environmentally friendly methodology based on microextraction in ATPSs, followed by spectrophotometric/colorimetric determination of the dyes, is proposed. The ATPSs are formed in mixtures of benzethonium chloride (BztCl) and sodium N-lauroylsarcosinate (NaLS) or sodium dihexylsulfosuccinate (NaDHSS) under the molar ratio close to equimolar at the total surfactant concentration of 0.01-0.20 M. The density, viscosity, polarity, and water content in the surfactant-rich phases at an equimolar ratio BztCl:NaA were determined. The effects of pH, total surfactant concentration, dye concentration, and time of extraction/centrifugation were investigated, and the optimum conditions for the quantitative extraction of dyes were established. The smartphone-based colorimetric determination was employed directly in the extract without separating the aqueous phase. The analytical performance (calibration linearity, precision, limits of detection and quantification, reproducibility, and preconcentration factor) and comparison of the spectrophotometric and smartphone-based colorimetric determination of dyes were evaluated. The method was applied to the determination of dyes in food samples and food-processing industrial wastewater.

A Three-Reagent “Green” Paper-Based Analytical Device for Solid-Phase Spectrometric and Colorimetric Determination of Dihydroquercetin

Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (µPADs) represent one of the promising green analytical strategies for low-cost and simple determination of various analytes. The actual task is the development of such devices for quantitation of antioxidants, e.g., flavonoids. In this paper, possibilities of a novel three-reagent µPAD including silver nitrate, 4-nitrophenyldiazonium tetrafluoroborate, and iron(III) chloride as reagents are assessed with respect to the determination of dihydroquercetin. It is shown that all the three reagents produce different colorimetric responses that can be detected by a mini-spectrophotometer–monitor calibrator or by a smartphone. The method is applicable to direct measuring high contents of dihydroquercetin (the linearity range is 0.026–1 mg mL⁻¹, and the limit of detection is 7.7 µg mL⁻¹), which is favorable for many dietary supplements. The analysis of a food supplement was possible with the relative standard deviations of 9–26%, which is satisfactory for quantitative and semiquantitative determinations. It was found that plotting a calibration graph in 3D space of the three reagents’ responses allows us to distinguish dihydroquercetin from its close structural analogue, quercetin.

Advances in Therapeutic Monitoring of Lithium in the Management of Bipolar Disorder

Since the mid-20th century, lithium continues to be prescribed as a first-line mood stabilizer for the management of bipolar disorder (BD). However, lithium has a very narrow therapeutic index, and it is crucial to carefully monitor lithium plasma levels as concentrations greater than 1.2 mmol/L are potentially toxic and can be fatal. The quantification of lithium in clinical laboratories is performed by atomic absorption spectrometry, flame emission photometry, or conventional ion-selective electrodes. All these techniques are cumbersome and require frequent blood tests with consequent discomfort which results in patients evading treatment. Furthermore, the current techniques for lithium monitoring require highly qualified personnel and expensive equipment; hence, it is crucial to develop low-cost and easy-to-use devices for decentralized monitoring of lithium. The current paper seeks to review the pertinent literature rigorously and critically with a focus on different lithium-monitoring techniques which could lead towards the development of automatic and point-of-care analytical devices for lithium determination.

An improved step-by-step airflow/paper-based colorimetric method for highly selective determination of halides in complex matrices

An improved step-by-step colorimetric method for determination of halides has been developed. The method is based on successive selective oxidation of iodide, bromide and chloride into corresponding free halogens, their extraction by airflow and colorimetric detection with different paper test-strips. This procedure can be performed in a single analyzed solution and possesses high selectivity and good sensitivity due to the extraction step. Three types of paper test-strips were examined: paper modified with tetramethylammonium iodide and starch, paper modified with methyl orange and paper modified with silver triangular nanoplates. Limits of detection for iodide, bromide and chloride are 0.01, 0.02, and 0.04 mg L^-1 respectively in case of the last mentioned paper. The method was applied to the analysis of samples having complex matrices, such as various seafood, preserves, bread, and natural waters, showing good accuracy of the analysis with recoveries of 95-105% and relative standard deviations not higher than 6%.

Current Trends in the Biosensors for Biological Warfare Agents Assay

Biosensors are analytical devices combining a physical sensor with a part of biological origin providing sensitivity and selectivity toward analyte. Biological warfare agents are infectious microorganisms or toxins with the capability to harm or kill humans. They can be produced and spread by a military or misused by a terrorist group. For example, Bacillus anthracis, Francisella tularensis, Brucella sp., Yersinia pestis, staphylococcal enterotoxin B, botulinum toxin and orthopoxviruses are typical biological warfare agents. Biosensors for biological warfare agents serve as simple but reliable analytical tools for the both field and laboratory assay. There are examples of commercially available biosensors, but research and development of new types continue and their application in praxis can be expected in the future. This review summarizes the facts and role of biosensors in the biological warfare agents' assay, and shows current commercially available devices and trends in research of the news. Survey of actual literature is provided.
