Polymorphs of Nb2O5 Compound and Their Electrical Energy Storage Applications

Niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5), as an important dielectric and semiconductor material, has numerous crystal polymorphs, higher chemical stability than water and oxygen, and a higher melt point than most metal oxides. Nb2O5 materials have been extensively studied in electrochemistry, lithium batteries, catalysts, ionic liquid gating, and microelectronics. Nb2O5 polymorphs provide a model system for studying structure-property relationships. For example, the T-Nb2O5 polymorph has two-dimensional layers with very low steric hindrance, allowing for rapid Li-ion migration. With the ever-increasing energy crisis, the excellent electrical properties of Nb2O5 polymorphs have made them a research hotspot for potential applications in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and supercapacitors (SCs). The basic properties, crystal structures, synthesis methods, and applications of Nb2O5 polymorphs are reviewed in this article. Future research directions related to this material are also briefly discussed.

Structural Variety of Niobium(V) Polyoxo Clusters Obtained from the Reaction with Aromatic Monocarboxylic Acids: Isolation of {Nb2 O}, {Nb4 O4 } and {Nb8 O12 } Cores

The reactivity of aryl monocarboxylic acids (benzoic, 1- or 2-naphtoic, 4'-methylbiphenyl-4-carboxylic, and anthracene-9-carboxylic acids) as complexing agents for the ethoxide niobium(V) (Nb(OEt)5 precursor has been investigated. A total of eight coordination complexes were isolated with distinct niobium(V) nuclearities as well as carboxylate complexation states. The use of benzoic acid gives a tetranuclear core Nb4 (μ2 -O)4 (L)4 (OEt)8 ] (L=benzoate (1)) with four Nb-(μ2 -O)-Nb linkages in a square plane configuration. A similar tetramer, 7, was obtained with 2-naphtoic acid by using a 55 % humid atmosphere synthetic route. Two types of dinuclear brick were identified with one central Nb-(μ2 -O)-Nb linkage; they differ in their complexation state, with one bridging carboxylate ([Nb2 (μ2 -O)(μ2 -OEt)(L)(OEt)6 ], with L=1-naphtoate (3) or anthracene-9-carboxylate (5)) or two bridging carboxylate groups ([Nb2 (μ2 -O)(L)2 (OEt)6 ], with L=4'-methylbiphenyl-4-carboxylic (4) or anthracene-9-carboxylate (6)). An octanuclear moiety [Nb8 (μ2 -O)12 (L)8 (η1 -L)4-x (OEt)4+x ] (with L=2-naphtoate, x=0 or 2; 8) was obtained by using a solvothermal route in acetonitrile; it has a cubic configuration with niobium centers at each node, linked by 12 μ2 -O groups. The formation of the niobium oxo clusters was characterized by infrared and liquid 1 H NMR spectroscopy in order to analyze the esterification reaction, which induces the release of water molecules that further react through oxolation with niobium atoms, in different {Nb2 O}, {Nb4 O4 } and {Nb8 O12 } nuclearities.

Preparation and Characterization of NbxOy Thin Films: A Review

Niobium oxides (NbO, NbO2, Nb2O5), being a versatile material has achieved tremendous popularity to be used in a number of applications because of its outstanding electrical, mechanical, chemical, and magnetic properties. NbxOy films possess a direct band gap within the ranges of 3.2–4.0 eV, with these films having utility in different applications which include; optical systems, stainless steel, ceramics, solar cells, electrochromic devices, capacitor dielectrics, catalysts, sensors, and architectural requirements. With the purpose of fulfilling the requirements of a vast variety of the named applications, thin films having comprehensive properties span described by film composition, morphology, structural properties, and thickness are needed. The theory, alongside the research status of the different fabrication techniques of NbxOy thin films are reported in this work. The impact of fabrication procedures on the thin film characteristics which include; film thickness, surface quality, optical properties, interface properties, film growth, and crystal phase is explored with emphases on the distinct deposition process applied, are also described and discussed.

On the lithiation reaction of niobium oxide: structural and electronic properties of Li(1.714)Nb2O5

Monoclinic α-Nb2O5 was chemically lithiated by reaction with n-butyllithium, mimicking the product of electrochemical discharge of a niobium oxide cathode vs. a Li anode. The compound was investigated by neutron powder diffraction (D2B equipment at ILL, France) and its structure was Rietveld refined in space group P2 to wRp = 0.045, locating the Li atoms inserted in the α-Nb2O5 framework. The ensuing chemical formula is Li12/7Nb2O5. Some Li atoms are more strongly bonded (five coordinated O atoms), some are less strongly bonded (coordination number = 4). Starting from the experimental structure, first-principles periodic DFT calculations based on the hybrid B3LYP functional were performed. The electrochemical voltage of Li insertion was computed to be 1.67 V, fully consistent with the experimental 1.60 V plateau vs. capacity. The analysis of the electron band structure shows that lithiation changes the insulating oxide into a semi-metal; some of the extra electrons inserted with lithium become spin-polarized and give the material weak ferromagnetic properties.
