Detection of near-surface defects in viscoelastic material based on focused ultrasound thermal effects

Viscoelastic materials will absorb and dissipate energy under stress, resulting in energy loss and heat generation. The conventional non-destructive testing methods have certain limitations when it comes to detecting near-surface defects in viscoelastic materials. In this paper, a detection method of near-surface defects based on focused ultrasonic thermal effect is proposed. Firstly, the difference in thermal effects caused by defective and non-defective regions of the material under ultrasound is analyzed according to the stress response equation of viscoelastic materials, and the detection principle is elucidated. Secondly, the feasibility of this method is verified through finite element simulation with an example of plexiglass material Subsequently, the variations in the surface temperature distribution of defective specimens with varying diameters and depths are analyzed. Finally, experimental validation reveals that ultrasonic waves operating at 1.12 MHz successfully detect artificial defects with a diameter of 1 mm. With the increase of the equivalent diameter of the defect, the width of the low-temperature depression area in the surface temperature field exhibits a linear increase relationship. With the increase of the defect depth, the surface temperature difference between the corresponding position of the defective and the surrounding non-defective area gradually decreases. This method effectively overcomes the half-wavelength limitation and introduces a novel detection approach for near-surface defect identification in viscoelastic materials such as plexiglass.

Preclinical robotic device for magnetic resonance imaging guided focussed ultrasound

BACKGROUND

A robotic device featuring three motion axes was manufactured for preclinical research on focussed ultrasound (FUS). The device comprises a 2.75 MHz single element ultrasonic transducer and is guided by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

METHODS

The compatibility of the device with the MRI was evaluated by estimating the influence on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The efficacy of the transducer in generating ablative temperatures was evaluated in phantoms and excised porcine tissue.

RESULTS

System's activation in the MRI scanner reduced the SNR to an acceptable level without compromising the image quality. The transducer demonstrated efficient heating ability as proved by MR thermometry. Discrete and overlapping thermal lesions were inflicted in excised tissue.

CONCLUSIONS

The FUS system was proven effective for FUS thermal applications in the MRI setting. It can thus be used for multiple preclinical applications of the emerging MRI-guided FUS technology. The device can be scaled-up for human use with minor modifications.

Parameter estimation in high-intensity focused ultrasound therapy

Hyperthermia using High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is an acoustic therapy for cancer treatment. This technique consists of an increase in the temperature field of the tumor to achieve coagulative necrosis and immediate cell death. Therefore, for having a successful treatment, the physical problem requires to know several properties due to the high variability from individual to individual, or even for the same individual under different physiological conditions. This article presents a numerical simulation of hyperthermia therapy for cancer treatment using HIFU, as well as the estimation of parameters that influence the physical problem. Two mathematical models were considered to solve the forward problem. The acoustic model based on acoustic pressure performs a frequency-domain study, and the bioheat transfer model a time-dependent study. These models were solved using Comsol Multiphysics® software in a 2D-axisymmetric rectangular domain to determine the temperature field. Parameter estimation was coded in Matlab Mathworks® environment using a Bayesian approach. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo method by the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm was implemented, and the simulated temperature measurements were considered. Results suggest that specific HIFU therapy can be performed for each patient by estimating appropriate parameters for cancer treatment and provides the possibility to define procedures before and during the treatment.

A visualization method for a wide range of rising temperature induced by high-intensity focused ultrasound using a tissue-mimicking phantom

PURPOSE

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment requires prior evaluation of the HIFU transducer output. A method using micro-capsulated thermochromic liquid crystal (MTLC) to evaluate the temperature distribution in the media during HIFU exposure has been previously developed. However, the color-coded temperature range of commercial MTLC is approximately 10 °C, which is insufficient for temperature measurement for HIFU exposure. We created two layers of tissue-mimicking phantoms with different color-coded temperature ranges, and a new visualization method was developed by utilizing the axisymmetric pressure distribution of a HIFU focus.

METHODS

A two-layer phantom with two sensitivity ranges was created. The HIFU transducer was set to align the focal point to the boundary between the two layers. Images of the upper and lower layers were flipped along the boundary between the two layers such that they overlapped with each other, assuming the pressure distribution of HIFU to be axisymmetric.

RESULTS

The experimental and simulation results were compared to evaluate the accuracy of the phantom temperature measurement. The experimental time profile of the temperature and spatial distribution around the HIFU focus matched well with that of the simulation. However, there is room for improvement in the accuracy in the axial direction of HIFU focus.

CONCLUSION

Users can apply our proposed method in clinical practice to promptly assess the output of the HIFU transducer before treatment.

Influence of Postprocessing on Wear Resistance of Aerospace Steel Parts Produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

The paper is devoted to the research of the effect of ultrasonic postprocessing—specifically, the effects of ultrasonic cavitation-abrasive finishing, ultrasonic plastic deformation, and vibration tumbling on surface quality, wear resistance, and the ability of real aircraft parts with complex geometries and with sizes less than and more than 100 mm to work in exploitation conditions. The parts were produced by laser powder bed fusion from two types of anticorrosion steels of austenitic and martensitic grades—20Kh13 (DIN 1.4021, X20Cr13, AISI 420) and 12Kh18N9T (DIN 1.4541, X10CrNiTi18-10, AISI 321). The finishing technologies based on mechanical action—plastic deformation, abrasive wear, and complex mechanolysis showed an effect on reducing the submicron surface roughness, removing the trapped powder granules from the manufactured functional surfaces and their wear resistance. The tests were completed by proving resistance of the produced parts to exploitation conditions—vibration fatigue and corrosion in salt fog. The roughness arithmetic mean deviation Ra was improved by 50–52% after cavitation-abrasive finishing, by 28–30% after ultrasonic plastic deformation, and by 65–70% after vibratory tumbling. The effect on wear resistance is correlated with the improved roughness. The effect of used techniques on resistance to abrasive wear was explained and grounded.

Effect of Cavitation Erosion Wear, Vibration Tumbling, and Heat Treatment on Additively Manufactured Surface Quality and Properties

The paper is devoted to researching various post-processing methods that affect surface quality, physical properties, and mechanical properties of laser additively manufactured steel parts. The samples made of two types of anticorrosion steels—20kH13 (DIN 1.4021, X20Cr13, AISI 420) and 12kH18N9T (DIN 1.4541, X10CrNiTi18-10, AISI 321) steels—of martensitic and austenitic class were subjected to cavitation abrasive finishing and vibration tumbling. The roughness parameter Ra was reduced by 4.2 times for the 20kH13 (X20Cr13) sample by cavitation-abrasive finishing when the roughness parameter Ra for 12kH18N9T (X10CrNiTi18-10) sample was reduced by 2.8 times by vibratory tumbling. The factors of cavitation-abrasive finishing were quantitatively evaluated and mathematically supported. The samples after low tempering at 240 °C in air, at 680 °C in oil, and annealing at 760 °C in air were compared with cast samples after quenching at 1030 °C and tempering at 240 °C in air, 680 °C in oil. It was shown that the strength characteristics increased by ~15% for 20kH13 (X20Cr13) steel and ~20% for 12kH18N9T (X10CrNiTi18-10) steel than for traditionally heat-treated cast samples. The wear resistance of 20kH13 (X20Cr13) steel during abrasive wear correlated with measured hardness and decreased with an increase in tempering temperatures.
