Abstract
Photochromic compounds, whose key molecular properties can be effectively modulated by light irradiation, have attracted significant attention for their potential applications in various research fields. The restriction of photoisomerization coloration induced by ultraviolet light limits their applications in the biomedical field and some other fields. Negative photochromism, wherein a relatively stable colored isomer transforms to a colorless metastable isomer under low-energy light irradiation, offers advantages in applications within materials science and life science. This review provides a summary of negatively photochromic compounds based on different molecular skeletons. Their corresponding design strategies and photochromic properties are presented to provide practical guidelines for future investigations. Negatively photochromic compounds can effectively expand the range of photochromic switches for future applications, offering unique properties such as responsiveness to visible to near-infrared light.

Abstract
Photochromic conducting molecules have emerged because of their unique capacity to modulate electrical conductivity upon exposure to light, toggling between high and low conductive states. This unique amalgamation has unlocked novel avenues for the application of these materials across diverse areas in optoelectronics and smart materials. The fundamental mechanism underpinning this phenomenon is based on the light-driven isomerization of conjugated π-systems which influences the extent of conjugation. The photoisomerization process discussed here involves photochromic switches such as azobenzenes, diarylethenes, spiropyrans, dimethyldihydropyrenes, and norbornadiene. The change in the degree of conjugation alters the charge transport in both single molecules and bulk states in solid samples or solutions. This article discusses a number of recent examples of photochromic conducting systems and the challenges and potentials of the field.

Abstract
Donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASA) have recently emerged as a class of visible-light-induced photochromic molecular switches, but their photocyclization mechanism remains puzzling and incomplete. In this work, we carried out MS-CASPT2//SA-CASSCF calculations to reveal the complete mechanism of the dominant channels and possible side reactions. We found that a new thermal-then-photo isomerization channel, i.e., EEZ → EZZ → EZE, other than the commonly accepted EEZ → EEE → EZE channel, is dominant in the initial step. Besides, our calculations rationalized why the expected byproducts ZEZ and ZEE are unobserved and proposed a competitive stepwise channel for the final ring-closure step. The findings here redraw the mechanistic picture of the DASA reaction by better accounting for experimental observations, and more importantly, provide critical physical insight in understanding the interplay between thermal- and photo-induced processes widely present in photochemical synthesis and reactions.

Abstract
Colloidal materials have widely been used to develop innovative anticounterfeiting nanoinks for information encryption. Latex nanoparticles based on methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) bearing hydroxyl functional groups were synthesized via semicontinuous miniemulsion polymerization. The size determination of the nanoparticles and microscopic results showed mostly spherical nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution and a mean size of about 80 nm. Two oxazolidine derivatives were physically doped at the surface of the nanoparticles to prepare photoluminescent polymer nanoparticles. Hydroxyl functional groups at the surface of the nanoparticles led to their hydrogen bonding interactions with the doped luminescent compounds. Optical analysis of the photoluminescent nanoparticles displayed different fluorescence emission and UV-vis absorbance intensities based on the amount of polar groups located at the surface of colloidal nanoparticles. Reducing the particle size to below 100 nm along with increasing the surface area can assist the decrease of the light reflectance and improvement of the latex nanoparticles' efficiency in the anticounterfeiting industry. This preparation methodology can efficiently provide remarkable photoreversible anticounterfeiting nanoinks used in different applications, such as print marking, security encoded tags, labeling, probing, and handwriting.

Abstract
This joint experimental-theoretical work focuses on molecular and photophysical properties of the spiropyran-containing amphiphilic molecule in organic and aqueous solutions. Being dissolved in tested organic solvents, the system demonstrates positive photochromism, i.e., upon UV stimulus the colorless spiropyran form is transformed into colorful merocyanine isomer. However, the aqueous solution of the amphiphile possesses a negative photochromism: the orange-red merocyanine form becomes thermodynamically more stable in water, and both UV and vis stimuli lead to the partial or complete photobleaching of the solution. The explanation of this phenomenon is given on the basis of density functional theory calculations and classical modeling including thermodynamic integration. The simulations reveal that stabilization of merocyanine in water proceeds with the energy of ca. 70 kJ mol−1, and that the Helmholtz free energy of hydration of merocyanine form is 100 kJ mol−1 lower as compared to the behavior of SP isomer in water. The explanation of such a difference lies in the molecular properties of the merocyanine: after ring-opening reaction this molecule transforms into a zwitterionic form, as evidenced by the electrostatic potential plotted around the opened form. The presence of three charged groups on the periphery of a flat conjugated backbone stimulates the self-assembly of merocyanine molecules in water, ending up with the formation of elongated associates with stack-like building blocks, as shown in molecular dynamics simulations of the aqueous solution with the concentration above critical micelle concentration. Our quantitative evaluation of the hydrophilicity switching in spiropyran/merocyanine containing surfactants may prompt the search for new systems, including colloidal and polymeric ones, aiming at remote tuning of their morphology, which could give new promising shapes and patterns for the needs of modern nanotechnology.

Abstract
The aza-Piancatelli reaction has been widely used to synthesize donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs), a new class of molecular photoswitches with unique properties. However, the substitution pattern of furan cores has been limited to position 3, as 3,4-disubstituted furans remain unreactive. Herein, we explore the aza-Piancatelli reaction mechanism using density functional theory (DFT) calculations to understand the influence of the different substituents on the reactivity. We found that all the reaction pathways are kinetically accessible, but the driving force of the reaction is lost in disubstituted furans due to the loss of conjugation in the DASA products. Finally, a simple model is proposed to guide the design of synthetic routes using this reaction.

Abstract
Photochemical switching of cytotoxicity by using spiropyran compounds with pyridinium and alkyl groups was investigated. The spiropyran compound, SP6, with a hexyl group as the alkyl group displayed negative photochromism, in which the hydrophilic open merocyanine form (MC form) was stable and isomerized to the hydrophobic closed spiro form (SP form) by visible light irradiation. Both MC and SP forms exhibited amphiphilicity because of the hydrophobic hexyl and hydrophilic pyridinium groups introduced. Cytotoxicity toward HeLa cells was observed for both MC and SP forms of SP6 at concentrations higher than the critical aggregation concentration of the isomers CACMC and CACSP (CACMC > CACSP), respectively. In contrast, cytotoxicity by SP6 was activated by visible light irradiation at concentrations between CACMC and CACSP; thus, photochemical switching of cytotoxicity from the OFF to ON state was achieved. Cytotoxicity was revealed to be caused by disruption of the cell membrane. The results provide an important step in developing novel next-generation photochemotherapy drugs.

Abstract
This article furnishes an introduction to one of the most well-known classes of photochromic colorant. While the properties of spiropyran dyes inspired pioneering efforts to exploit photochromism for industrial applications, their lack of robustness held them back from commercialization. Nevertheless, this type of dye remains at the heart of much of the work to develop light-responsive materials upon which many potential applications in different fields of scientific and technological endeavor depend. The article describes the photochromism, synthesis, and applications of spiropyran colorants with an emphasis on the structural subtype that has attracted the greatest scrutiny. It also acts as a springboard to sources of more detail on these aspects.

Abstract
Representatives of visible-light-switchable nitrile-rich negative T-type photochromes (NRP) were synthesized. The temperature effect on the thermal relaxation of the photoinduced form of NRP was studied for the first time. It was found that regardless the temperature the reverse thermal reaction in ethanol and 1,4-dioxane proceeded according to a first-order kinetic equation, while an unusual pseudo-zero order of the dark reaction was observed in acetonitrile. Using the obtained experimental data, the activation energy as well as the activation parameters, such as entropy and enthalpy of activation, were calculated for the first time for thermal relaxation of NRP photochromes. It was also shown that an initial form of NRP photochromes bearing a tricyanofuran acceptor was more temperature resistant than the initial form of photochromes with a tricyanopyrrole acceptor. The temperature effect on the thermal stability of both the initial and photoinduced forms of nitrile-rich T-type photochromes was studied for the first time.![]()

Abstract
Many studies have recently explored a new class of reversible photoswitching compounds named Donor-Acceptor Stenhouse Adducts (DASAs). Upon light irradiation, these systems evolve from a coloured open-chain to a colourless closed-ring form, while the thermal back-reaction occurs at room temperature. In order to fulfill the requirements for different applications, new molecules with specific properties need to be designed. For instance, shifting the activation wavelength towards the red part of the visible spectrum is of relevance to biological applications. By using accurate computational calculations, we have designed new DASAs and predicted some of their photophysical properties. Starting from well-studied donor and acceptor parts, we have shown that small chemical modifications can lead to substantial changes in both photophysical and photoswitching properties of the resulting DASAs. Furthermore, we have also analysed how these substitutions impact the electronic structure of the systems. Finally, some pertinent candidates have been successfully synthesized and their photoswitching properties have been characterized experimentally.

Abstract
Salts containing the merocyanine form of a pyridinium-fused spiropyran ([6'-MC]X; X = I and PF6) were prepared, and their crystal structures were determined. In addition, the photochromic properties of the salts were spectroscopically and kinetically investigated. In the solution state, the salts exhibited negative photochromism. Theoretical calculations revealed that the negative photochromism of the salt originates from the drastic stabilization of the merocyanine structure by electron delocalization of the pyridinium ring. Furthermore, the salts containing the merocyanine and spiropyran forms ([6'-MC]I, [6'-MC]PF6, and [6'-SP]PF6) were obtained by recrystallization. The crystals of [6'-SP]PF6 exhibited positive photochromism in the solid state; however, no photochromism was observed in the [6'-MC]X crystals.

Abstract
Two new spiroindolinonaphthoxazine derivatives with an electron-accepting styrylquinolizinium or styrylcoralyne unit, respectively, were synthesized, and the influence of such an arylvinyl substituent on the chemical and photochemical properties of the compounds was investigated. Specifically, these spirooxazines turned out to be resistant towards the photoinduced merocyanine formation, and the irradiation with light mainly led to photodegradation of the substrates. However, it was shown by colorimetric and fluorimetric screening assays as well as by detailed NMR spectroscopic and mass spectrometric studies that the addition of particular metal ions (Cu2+, Fe3+, and to a certain extent Hg2+) initially induced a ring-opening reaction that was irreversibly followed by a fast ring closure-deprotonation-oxidation sequence to give styryl-substituted naphthoxazole derivatives as the products quantitatively. For the quinolizinium-substituted spirooxazine derivative, the formation of the respective oxidation product caused the development of a broad absorption band between 425 nm and 500 nm and a new emission band at λfl = 628 nm, so that it may be employed as a selective chemosensor or chemodosimeter for the colorimetric and fluorimetric detection of Cu2+ and Fe3+.

Abstract
AbstractThis article provides an introductory overview of a class of colorant that underpinned the establishment of the most industrially important application of photochromic dyes. It outlines the properties that led to the rise (and subsequent decline) in commercial significance of spirooxazine colorants, and which attract researchers seeking to put them to work in new technologies. Within this survey, the chief means of synthesising such dyes and adjusting their photochromism are briefly discussed. The reader is directed to useful sources of information concerning not only these aspects, but also potential applications for spirooxazine-based photochromism.

Abstract
Switches that can be actively steered by external stimuli along multiple pathways at the molecular level are the basis for next-generation responsive material systems. The operation of commonly employed molecular photoswitches revolves around one key structural coordinate. Photoswitches with functionalities that depend on and can be addressed along multiple coordinates would offer novel means to tailor and control their behavior and performance. The recently developed donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs) are versatile switches suitable for such applications. Their photochemistry is well understood, but is only responsible for part of their overall photoswitching mechanism. The remaining thermal switching pathways are to date unknown. Here, rapid-scan infrared absorption spectroscopy is used to obtain transient fingerprints of reactions occurring on the ground state potential energy surface after reaching structures generated through light absorption. The spectroscopic data are interpreted in terms of structural transformations using kinetic modeling and quantum chemical calculations. Through this combined experimental-theoretical approach, we are able to unravel the complexity of the multidimensional ground-state potential energy surface explored by the photoswitch and use this knowledge to predict, and subsequently confirm, how DASA switches can be guided along this potential energy surface. These results break new ground for developing user-geared DASA switches but also shed light on the development of novel photoswitches in general.

Abstract
Donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs) are negative photochromes that switch with visible light and are highly promising for applications ranging from smart materials to biological systems. However, the strong solvent dependence of the photoswitching kinetics limits their application. The nature of the photoswitching mechanism in different solvents is key for addressing the solvatochromism of DASAs, but as yet has remained elusive. Here, we employ spectroscopic analyses and TD-DFT calculations to reveal changing solvatochromic shifts and energies of the species involved in DASA photoswitching. Time-resolved visible pump-probe spectroscopy suggests that the primary photochemical step remains the same, irrespective of the polarity and protic nature of the solvent. Disentangling the different factors determining the solvent-dependence of DASA photoswitching, presented here, is crucial for the rational development of applications in a wide range of different media.

Abstract
Molecular photoswitches comprise chromophores that can be interconverted reversibly with light between two states with different photochemical and physicochemical properties. This feature renders them useful for diverse applications, ranging from materials science, biology (specifically photopharmacology) to supramolecular chemistry. With new and more challenging systems to control, especially extending towards biomedical applications, using visible or near-infrared light for photoswitch activation becomes vital. Donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts are a novel class of visible light-responsive negative photochromes that provide a possible answer to current limitations of other photoswitch classes in the visible and NIR window. Their rapid development since their discovery in 2014, together with first successful examples of applications, demonstrate both their potential and areas where improvements are needed. A better understanding of DASA characteristics and its photoswitching mechanism has revealed that they are in fact a subset of a more general structural class of photochromes, namely Stenhouse photoswitches. This tutorial review aims at providing an introduction and practical guide on DASAs: it focuses on their structure and synthesis, provides fundamental insights for understanding their photoswitching behavior and demonstrates guiding principles for tailoring these switches for given applications.

Abstract
Donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs) are negative photochromes that hold great promise for a variety of applications. Key to optimizing their switching properties is a detailed understanding of the photoswitching mechanism, which, as yet, is absent. Here we characterize the actinic step of DASA-photoswitching and its key intermediate, which was studied using a combination of ultrafast visible and IR pump-probe spectroscopies and TD-DFT calculations. Comparison of the time-resolved IR spectra with DFT computations allowed to unambiguously identify the structure of the intermediate, confirming that light absorption induces a sequential reaction path in which a Z-E photoisomerization of C2-C3 is followed by a rotation around C3-C4 and a subsequent thermal cyclization step. First and second-generation DASAs share a common photoisomerization mechanism in chlorinated solvents with notable differences in kinetics and lifetimes of the excited states. The photogenerated intermediate of the second-generation DASA was photo-accumulated at low temperature and probed with time-resolved spectroscopy, demonstrating the photoreversibility of the isomerization process. Taken together, these results provide a detailed picture of the DASA isomerization pathway on a molecular level.
