A Brief Overview of Antimicrobial Nanotextiles Prepared by In Situ Synthesis and Deposition of Silver Nanoparticles on Cotton

Green Synthesized Iron-Coated Silver Nanoparticles: Economic Bimetallic Nanoparticles Potential Against Methicillin-Resistance Staphylococcus aureus

Iron coating was introduced as one of the novel techniques to improve physicochemical and biological properties of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). In the current experiment, impact of iron coating on the antimicrobial potency of AgNPs was investigated against methicillin-resistance Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). To obtain more accurate data about the antimicrobial potency of examined nanostructures, the experiment was done on the 10 isolates of MRSA which were isolated from skin lesions. AgNPs and iron-coated AgNPs (Fe@AgNPs) were fabricated based on a green one-pot reaction procedure. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Fe@AgNPs was not significantly different with MIC of AgNPs against eight out of 10 examined MRSA isolates. Also, by iron coating a reduction in the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of AgNPs was observed against two MRSA isolates. The average MIC of AgNPs against 10 MRSA isolates was calculated to be 2.16 ± 0.382 mg/mL and this value was reduced to 1.70 ± 0.638 mg/mL for Fe@AgNPs. However, this difference was not considered significant statistically (P-value > 0.05). From productivity point of view, it was found that iron coating would improve the productivity of the synthesis reaction more than fivefold. Productivity of AgNPs was calculated to be 1.02 ± 0.07 g/L, meanwhile this value was 5.25 ± 0.05 g/L for Fe@AgNPs. Iron coating may provide another economic benefit to reduce final price of AgNPs. It is obvious that the price of a particular nanostructure made of silver and iron is significantly lower than that of pure silver. These findings can be considered for the fabrication of economic and potent antimicrobial nanoparticles.

Silver-Composited Polydopamine Nanoparticles: Antibacterial and Antioxidant Potential in Nanocomposite Hydrogels

(1) Background: Infections of pathogenic microorganisms can be life-threatening due to delayed healing or even worsening conditions in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The excessive presence of reactive oxygen species in damaged and infected tissues causes a negative inflammatory response, resulting in failed healing. Thus, the development of hydrogels with antibacterial and antioxidant abilities for the treatment of infectious tissues is in high demand. (2) Methods: We herein describe the development of green-synthesized silver-composited polydopamine nanoparticles (AgNPs), which are fabricated by the self-assembly of dopamine as a reducing and antioxidant agent in the presence of silver ions. (3) Results: The facile and green-synthesized AgNPs have a nanoscale diameter with mostly spherical shapes, with various shapes coexisting. The particles are stable in an aqueous solution for up to 4 weeks. In addition, remarkable antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and -negative bacterial strains and antioxidant capabilities were evaluated by in vitro assays. When incorporated into biomaterial hydrogels at concentrations above 2 mg L−1, the hydrogels produced powerful antibacterial effects. (4) Conclusions: This study describes a biocompatible hydrogel with antibacterial and antioxidant activities from the introduction of facile and green-synthesized AgNPs as a safer tool for the treatment of damaged tissues.

Physical and Mechanical Characterization of a Functionalized Cotton Fabric with Nanocomposite Based on Silver Nanoparticles and Carboxymethyl Chitosan Using Green Chemistry

Cotton is the most widely used natural fiber for textiles but its innate capacity to absorb moisture, retain oxygen, and high specific surface area make it more prone to microbial contamination, becoming an appropriate medium for the growth of bacteria and fungi. In recent years, the incorporation of silver nanoparticles in textile products has been widely used due to their broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and low toxicity towards mammalian cells. The aim of the current study is to synthesize and characterize a nanocomposite based on silver nanoparticles and carboxymethyl chitosan (AgNPs-CMC), which was utilized to provide a functional finish to cotton fabric. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) to produce a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) image showed that the nanocomposite presents AgNPs with a 5–20 nm size. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the presence of silver nanoparticles. The concentration of silver in the functionalized fabric was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), which reported an average concentration of 13.5 mg of silver per kg of functionalized fabric. SEM showed that silver nanoparticles present a uniform distribution on the surface of the functionalized cotton fabric fibers. On the other hand, by infrared spectroscopy, it was observed that the functionalized fabric variation (compared to control) had a displaced peak of intensity at 1594.32 cm−1, corresponding to carboxylate anions. Similarly, Raman spectroscopy showed an intense peak at 1592.84 cm−1, which corresponds to the primary amino group of carboxymethyl chitosan, and a peak at 1371.5 cm−1 corresponding to the carboxylic anions. Finally, the physical and mechanical tests of tensile strength and color index of the functional fabric reported that it was no different (p ˃ 0.05) than the control fabric. Our results demonstrate that we have obtained an improved functionalized cotton fabric using green chemistry that does not alter intrinsic properties of the fabric and has the potential to be utilized in the manufacturing of hospital garments.

Monitoring and Optimisation of Ag Nanoparticle Spray-Coating on Textiles

An automatic lab-scaled spray-coating machine was used to deposit Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) on textile to create antibacterial fabric. The spray process was monitored for the dual purpose of (1) optimizing the process by maximizing silver deposition and minimizing fluid waste, thereby reducing suspension consumption and (2) assessing AgNPs release. Monitoring measurements were carried out at two locations: inside and outside the spray chamber (far field). We calculated the deposition efficiency (E), finding it to be enhanced by increasing the spray pressure from 1 to 1.5 bar, but to be lowered when the number of operating sprays was increased, demonstrating the multiple spray system to be less efficient than a single spray. Far-field AgNPs emission showed a particle concentration increase of less than 10% as compared to the background level. This finding suggests that under our experimental conditions, our spray-coating process is not a critical source of worker exposure.
