The moderating role of personal resources in the relationship between psychosocial job demands and health: a cross-sectional study

Using Job Demands–Resources Theory to Predict Work–Life Balance among Academicians in Private Universities in Egypt during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Employers are divided into those who support their employees to achieve work–life balance and others who believe that employees should devote anything in their life to fulfilling work obligations. Employees in different occupations struggle to balance their work and life adequately. Especially during the pandemic, the barriers between work and life diminished. This study proposes that self-efficacy could be a potential moderator under personal resources. Drawing on the Job Demands–Resources Theory (JD–R) and Conservation of Resources Theory (COR), this study empirically tested the role of emotional demands and supervisor support in predicting the academicians’ perception of work–life balance in Egypt during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected from 504 academicians employed in the top 10 private universities in Egypt. Results reveal that emotional demands and supervisor support were related to work–life balance. Self-efficacy moderated the relationship between supervisor support and work–life balance. However, self-efficacy did not moderate the relationship between emotional demands and work–life balance. Our findings provide new insights, contribute to the literature on the work–life balance topic among academicians during the pandemic, and enhance the universities’ understanding of implementing strategies to help achieve a work–life balance.

Characteristics of office workers who benefit most from interventions for preventing neck and low back pain: a moderation analysis

Number of working hours, work-related psychological demands, and use of lumbar support moderate the beneficial effects of preventive interventions for neck and low back pain.

Introduction:

Neck and low back pain are significant health problem in sedentary office workers. Active break and postural shift interventions has been proved to reduce the incidence of new onset of both neck and low back pain.

Objectives:

To identify variables that moderate the effects of active breaks and postural shift interventions on the development of neck and low back pain in office workers.

Methods:

Using data from a 3-arm (active break, postural shift, and control group) cluster randomized controlled trial (N = 193), we evaluated the moderating effects of age, job position, education level, sex, perceived psychological work demands, number of working hours, and using a chair with lumbar support on the benefits of 2 interventions designed to prevent the development of neck and low back pain in office workers. Moderation analyses were conducted using the Hayes PROCESS macro, with post hoc Johnson–Neyman techniques and logistic regressions.

Results:

Significant interactions between intervention groups and 3 moderators assessed at baseline emerged. For the prevention of neck pain, the effect of the active break intervention was moderated by the number of working hours and the effect of the postural shift intervention was moderated by the level of perceived psychological work demands and the number of working hours. For the prevention of low back pain, the effect of postural shift intervention was moderated by having or not having a chair with lumbar support.

Conclusions:

The study findings can be used to help determine who might benefit the most from 2 treatments that can reduce the risk of developing neck and low back pain in sedentary workers and may also help us to understand the mechanisms underlying the benefits of these interventions.

Stress-Buffering and Health-Protective Effect of Job Autonomy, Good Working Climate, and Social Support at Work Among Health Care Workers in Switzerland

OBJECTIVE

The relationship between work stress, job resources, and health has not yet been investigated among health professionals in Switzerland.

METHODS

Cross-sectional survey data, collected among hospital employees in German-speaking Switzerland, have been used for this study. Established measures were used to assess work stress as the main predictor and self-rated health and work-related burnout as the outcome variables. Validated measures for job autonomy, work climate, and social support at work were used as intervening variables.

RESULTS

The studied job resources were all found to be quite strongly and negatively associated with the two health outcomes but only partly explained and reduced the extraordinary strong positive association and clear dose-response relationship between work stress and poor self-rated health or burnout.

CONCLUSION

Job resources like these cannot completely prevent health professionals from negative health-related consequences of work stress.

Leisure-Time Physical Activity and General Health Mitigate Effects of Job Demands on Nonrestorative Sleep: CDC National Healthy Worksite Project

OBJECTIVE

We sought to determine if leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) modified the adverse relationship between high job demands and nonrestorative sleep (NRS).

METHODS

We conducted a multivariate logistic regression analysis among workers from the cross-sectional National Healthy Worksite Project (n = 4683) using self-report Likert-Scale data on psychological and physical demands of jobs, LTPA and general health in relation to NRS.

RESULTS

Not engaging in LTPA was associated with NRS for workers with jobs at the lowest or highest levels of the physical demand scale (OR 1.64, 95% CI: 0.96-2.81, OR 2.06, 95% CI: 0.95-4.45; respectively) in comparison to those who met LTPA recommendations. When assessing psychological demands, poor general health was associated with NRS at all levels of the scale independent of LTPA.

CONCLUSIONS

LTPA may reduce NRS for workers with jobs at either extreme of physical demands.

Roles of Emotional Reactions and Potency in Coping with Abusive Experiences of Indian Adolescent

Victimized children's perceptions of the severity of abusive incidents have been found to be associated with their willingness to disclose. However, the relationship between perceptions, disclosure, and coping processes of abused Indian adolescents, has rarely been studied. To explore the roles of emotional reactions associated with disclosure, and potency on individuals' perception of the severity of abusive incidents, reluctance to disclose, and posttraumatic stress symptoms. A randomly selected sample, consisting of 324 adolescents (aged 12 to 16) in Kolkata, India was included. Of these, 170 adolescents disclosed incidents of abuse last year. Data were analyzed by conditional process modeling. A moderated mediation analysis (n = 170) revealed that the overall perception of the severity of abusive incidents predicted greater reluctance to disclose (B = .63, p < .0001) through heightened emotional reactions, especially with a higher potency level (B = .07, p < .05; B = .1, p < .05). Potency moderated (B = -.02, p = .01) the effect of reluctance on posttraumatic stress symptoms. When tested on the entire sample (324) the results replicated the sub-sample (170). Adolescents revealed similar results irrespective of their exposure. The reluctance to disclose abuse is discussed from an Indian cultural and societal perspective.

Reciprocal associations between job strain and depression: A 2-year follow-up study from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe

BACKGROUND

A growing number of people suffered from depression. This study examined the depression prevalence in workers across 10 European countries plus Israel and the reciprocal associations between job strain and depression.

METHODS

The study population consisted of 7,879 workers aged 50-63 years at baseline (2004) from the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Job demands (physical or psychosocial) and job control variables were derived from the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ). Two 4-category job strains (physical and psychosocial) were obtained based on the cross-tabulation of these dichotomized demands and control variables. There were 4,284 depression-free, 3,259 high physical strain-free and 3,195 high psychosocial strain-free participants at baseline who were followed up for 2 years to detect incident depression, high physical job strain, or high psychosocial strain, respectively. The reciprocal associations between job strain and depression were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression and multivariate multilevel logistic regression adjusting for potential confounders.

RESULTS

The prevalence of depression varied from the lowest 12.5% in Germany to the highest 27.2% in France. Compared to individuals with low strain, a significantly higher risk of depression were found in individuals with high physical strain (OR = 1.39) and high psychosocial strain (OR = 1.55), after adjusting for potential confounders. Depression at baseline was not significantly associated with subsequent high job strain. Similar results were observed from multilevel models that took into consideration of the potential country-level influences.

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence of depression varies across countries in Europe. Avoiding high job strain may be an effective preventive strategy to prevent depression epidemic.
