Effect of Baduanjin exercises on elevated blood lipid levels of middle-aged and elderly individuals: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

CNN-LSTM Model for Recognizing Video-Recorded Actions Performed in a Traditional Chinese Exercise

Identifying human actions from video data is an important problem in the fields of intelligent rehabilitation assessment. Motion feature extraction and pattern recognition are the two key procedures to achieve such goals. Traditional action recognition models are usually based on the geometric features manually extracted from video frames, which are however difficult to adapt to complex scenarios and cannot achieve high-precision recognition and robustness. We investigate a motion recognition model and apply it to recognize the sequence of complicated actions of a traditional Chinese exercise (ie, Baduanjin). We first developed a combined convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) model for recognizing the sequence of actions captured in video frames, and applied it to recognize the actions of Baduanjin. Moreover, this method has been compared with the traditional action recognition model based on geometric motion features in which Openpose is used to identify the joint positions in the skeletons. Its performance of high recognition accuracy has been verified on the testing video dataset, containing the video clips from 18 different practicers. The CNN-LSTM recognition model achieved 96.43% accuracy on the testing set; while those manually extracted features in the traditional action recognition model were only able to achieve 66.07% classification accuracy on the testing video dataset. The abstract image features extracted by the CNN module are more effective on improving the classification accuracy of the LSTM model. The proposed CNN-LSTM based method can be a useful tool in recognizing the complicated actions.

Baduanjin exercise: A potential promising therapy toward osteoporosis

Purpose

Baduanjin (BDJ) exercise is a traditional exercise that combines breathing, body movement, meditation and awareness to help delay the onset and progression of senile degenerative musculoskeletal diseases, such as osteoporosis (OP). The aim of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the efficacy of BDJ exercise, and preliminarily infer its effective mechanism in the treatment of OP.

Methods

We identified relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) through eight databases, and compared BDJ exercise with the control groups (including blank control and conventional treatment intervention). The main outcome measure was bone mineral density (BMD), the additional outcome measures were visual analogue scale (VAS), Berg balance scale (BBS), serum Calcium (Ca), serum Phosphorus (P), serum Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and serum bone gla protein (BGP). Meta-analysis and trial sequence analysis (TSA) were performed using RevMan 5.4, Stata 16.0, and TSA 0.9.

Results

In total, 13 RCTs involving 919 patients were included in the analysis. For postmenopausal osteoporosis, BDJ exercise alone and BDJ exercise combined with conventional treatment can improve the BMD of lumbar spine. BDJ exercise alone can influence serum Ca and ALP. BDJ exercise combined with conventional treatment can improve balance (BBS) and influence serum BGP. For senile osteoporosis, BDJ exercise alone and BDJ exercise combined with conventional treatment can improve balance (BBS). BDJ exercise combined with conventional treatment can improve the BMD of hip and pain relieve (VAS). For primary osteoporosis, BDJ exercise combined with conventional treatment can improve the BMD of lumbar spine and femoral neck.

Conclusion

Baduanjin exercise may be beneficial to improve BMD, relieve pain, improve balance ability, influence serum BGP and serum ALP in patients with OP, but differences occur due to various types of OP. Due to the low quality of research on the efficacy and mechanism of BDJ exercise in the treatment of OP, high-quality evidence-based research is still needed to provide reliable supporting evidence.

Exercise Prescription Intervention Rehabilitation Suggestions for Fatty Liver Patients

In this study, the exercise prescription intervention rehabilitation suggestions for fatty liver patients were summarized as follows: first, basic exercises (brisk walking and jogging.), sports (swimming, badminton, and cycling), traditional Chinese medicine exercises (Taichi boxing and eight-section brocade), the aim of which is to improve overall physical strength and endurance of the body; second, exercise intensity, duration, and frequency; third, exercise precautions; and fourth, exercise prescription selection and suggestion.

The effectiveness of Baduanjin exercise for hypertension: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Background

Hypertension, a major risk factor of cardiovascular mortality, is a critical issue for public health. Although Baduanjin (Eight Brocades, EB), a traditional Chinese exercise, might influence blood pressure, glucose, and lipid status, the magnitude of true effects and subgroup differences remains unclear. Therefore, we performed a systematic review of relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the effect of EB on patient-important outcomes.

Methods

We systematically searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Chinese databases since inception until March 30, 2020. Meta-analysis was carried out using “meta” package in R 3.4.3 software. A prespecified subgroup analysis was done according to the type of comparisons between groups, and the credibility of significant subgroup effects (P < 0.05) were accessed using a five-criteria list. A GRADE evidence profile was constructed to illustrate the certainty of evidence.

Results

Our meta-analysis, including 14 eligible trials with 1058 patients, showed that compared with routine treatment or health education as control groups, the mean difference (MD) in systolic blood pressure (SBP) of the EB groups was − 8.52 mmHg (95%CI:[− 10.65, − 6.40], P < 0.01) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was − 4.65 mmHg (95%CI: [− 6.55, − 2.74], P < 0.01). For blood pressure, the evidence was, however, of low certainty because of risk of bias and inconsistency, and for the outcomes of most interest to patients (cardiovascular morbidity and mortality directly), of very low certainty (measurement of surrogate only). Subgroup analysis showed there was no significant interaction effect between different type of comparisons (SBP P = 0.15; DBP P = 0.37), so it could be easily attributed to chance.

Conclusion

Regularly EB exercising may be helpful to control blood pressure, but the evidence is only low certainty for blood pressure and very low certainty for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Rigorously designed RCTs that carry out longer follow-up and address patient-important outcomes remain warranted.

Shi's Daoyin Therapy for Neck Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Objective

To compare the immediate and short term effectiveness of Shi's Daoyin therapy (DT) rather than the Melbourne Protocol (MP) in terms of pain, mobility, and isometric strength of cervical muscles in nonacute nonspecific neck pain patients.

Material and Methods

A total of 114 nonacute nonspecific neck pain patients aged 20~50 years were recruited and randomly assigned to be treated by either Shi's DT or the MP. 56 cases and 54 cases received treatment for 3 weeks and were evaluated before and after intervention and at 3-week follow-up in Shi's DT group and MP group, respectively. The outcome measures were Chinese version of the Neck Disability Index (NDI), cervical range of motion (ROM), maximal voluntary isometric force (MVIF), and pain intensity (Numeric Pain Rating Scale, NPRS).

Results

All outcomes of both groups showed statistically significant improvements after the intervention and at 3-week follow-up (P < 0.05), while no statistically significant difference was found in NDI between groups. When followed up after 3 weeks, the ROM in axial rotation was significantly greater in the Shi's DT group (P < 0.05), and the NPRS in the Shi's DT group was significantly lower than the MP group (P < 0.05). At the end of the treatment period, the MVIF in lateral bending in the Shi's DT group had a lower value (P = 0.044) than in the MP group, but there was no significant difference in flexion and extension between the two groups.

Conclusions

Both Shi's DT and MP groups demonstrated an obvious reduction in pain intensity and improvements in neck mobility after a short term follow-up period. The improvement of Shi's DT in disability and pain during functional activities is generally similar to that of the MP for the treatment of nonacute nonspecific neck pain.
