Cross-sectional associations of housework with cognitive, physical and sensorimotor functions in younger and older community-dwelling adults: the Yishun Study

The Mediating Role of Lifestyle Activities in the Association Between Social Deprivation and Cognition in Older Adulthood: Results From the Health and Retirement (HRS) Study

Objectives: We aimed to investigate the mediating role of lifestyle activities in the association between social deprivation and cognition. Methods: To investigate, we analysed data of 3867 respondents (Mean Age: 73.37, SD: 5.57) in the U.S. Health and Retirement Study (HRS) using growth curve and path analysis, adjusted for demographic and health covariates. Results: Being in the high (vs. moderate) Social Deprivation Index group was associated with lower cognition scores (β = -2.63, [95 % CI: -2.90, -2.36]). Conversely, higher (vs. lower) Lifestyle Index scores were associated with higher cognition scores (β = 1.17, [95 % CI: 0.72, 1.63]). In mediation analysis, the Lifestyle Index score explained 27 % of the association of So Dep Index group on cognition at the final follow-up. Discussion: While lifestyle activities did mediate the association between social deprivation and cognition, factors not investigated accounted for the majority of the variation. These may include systemic disadvantages.

Relationship between domain-specific physical activity and cognitive function in older adults - findings from NHANES 2011-2014

Objective

To determine the relationship between domain-specific physical activity (PA) (e.g., occupational PA [OPA], transport-related PA [TPA], and recreational PA [RPA]) and cognitive function in older adults.

Methods

The data was obtained from the 2011-2014 cycle of the NHANES. We utilized weighted multivariate linear regression models among the included 2,924 people aged 60 years or older for our purposes.

Results

RPA and total PA according to WHO guidelines were associated with verbal fluency (RPA β: 1.400, 95% CI: 0.776, 2.024, p = 0.002; total PA β: 1.115, 95% CI: 0.571, 1.659, p = 0.001), processing speed and executive function (RPA β: 2.912, 95% CI. 1.291, 4.534, p = 0.005; total PA β: 2.974, 95% CI: 1.683, 4.265, p < 0.001) were positively correlated, and total PA was correlated with delayed memory performance (β: 0.254, 95% CI: 0.058, 0.449, p = 0.019). No significant association was observed between OPA, TPA, and various aspects of cognitive function among individuals over 60 years.

Conclusion

There was no noteworthy correlation discovered between OPA and TPA in relation to cognitive function. However, RPA and total PA exhibited significant associations with verbal fluency, processing speed, and executive function. Additionally, maintaining PA levels ranging from 600 to 1,200 MET-min/week would yield the most favorable outcomes for cognitive function.

Demographic and biological factors in interrelationships between physical, cognitive, psychological, and social frailty in community-dwelling older adults: Data from the Birjand Longitudinal Aging Study (BLAS)

Complex interrelationships may exist among different types of frailty. This study aimed to evaluate the demographic and biological factors that influence the different types of frailty in community-dwelling older adults in Iran through a cross-sectional analysis of data obtained from the Birjand Longitudinal Aging Study. This study is an ongoing cohort study of people aged 60 years and over and employed a multistage stratified cluster random sampling. Anthropometric measures were obtained by nurses. The "Fried frailty phenotype" was defined as physical frailty. Cognitive frailty was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination. Social frailty was evaluated by some questions, and psychological frailty was assessed using a patient health questionnaire. Blood samples were taken after overnight fasting. All statistical analyses were performed using Stata12 (Texas, USA) and Python. Some type of frailty had been experienced by 62.27 % of the older adults. Cognitive frailty was the dominant type of frailty (55.69 %). Based on multivariate regression analysis, age, sex, education, and marital status were the influencing factors in all types of frailty. Network analysis revealed that physical, cognitive, psychological, and social frailty had synergistic effects on each other, and age and sex had dominant interactions with frailty types. Cognitive frailty was dominant compared with other types of frailty, indicating the need to detect cognitive frailty at the earliest stage and to implement an appropriate program to manage cognitive frailty in older adults.

Activities of daily living and non-exercise physical activity in older adults: findings from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey

OBJECTIVES

Studies have shown that good cognitive function can moderate the relationship between non-exercise physical activity (NEPA) and activities of daily living (ADLs) disability to some extent, and this study mainly explores the relationship between ADL and NEPA and cognitive function in Chinese older adults.

SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS

Data came from a nationally representative sample of 2471 Chinese old adults (aged 65+) from the 2011, 2014 and 2018 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey.

PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES

A cross-lagged panel model combined with mediation analysis was used to determine the relationship between ADL and NEPA and the mediating effect of cognitive function on the ascertained ADL-NEPA relationship.

RESULTS

The more frequently people over the age of 65 in China participate in NEPA, the lower the risk of ADL disability. Cognitive function partially mediated this expected relationship, accounting for 9.09% of the total NEPA effect on ADL.

CONCLUSION

Participating in more NEPA could reduce the risk of ADL disability, and participating in NEPA may reduce the risk of ADL disability through cognitive function to some extent.

Association between housework and the risk of dementia among older Chinese adults: a prospective cohort study

OBJECTIVES

Physical activity (PA) is known to improve physical functioning and mental health and to reduce the incidence of dementia. However, studies of the effects of non-recreational PA on the incidence of dementia, especially in East Asian populations, remain limited. In this study, we evaluate the association of doing housework with the risk of dementia among participants in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS).

METHODS

The analysis was conducted with data from 7,237 CLHLS participants age over 65 obtained in 2008/2009, 2011/2012, 2014, and 2018. The frequency of housework performance was classified into four groups. A Cox proportional-hazards model was used to examine the association of the baseline housework frequency with the incidence of dementia, with adjustment for demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and lifestyle and health conditions.

RESULTS

The adjusted multivariate model showed that the incidence of dementia was lower among participants who did housework almost every day than among those who rarely or never did housework (hazard ratio = 0.49; 95% confidence interval, 0.39-0.61). The subgroup and sensitivity analyses yielded similar results.

CONCLUSION

A high frequency of housework performance was associated with a reduced incidence of dementia among older Chinese adults, especially those who did not exercise regularly. The encouragement of engagement in housework would be a cost-effective measure promoting healthy aging in the Chinese population.

The association between leisure activity patterns and the prevalence of mild cognitive impairment in community-dwelling older adults

Objectives

The study aimed to identify leisure activity patterns among older adults and explore the differences in the prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) of these patterns.

Methods

A total of 352 older adults aged ≥ 65 years in Shijiazhuang were enrolled in this study from June to September 2021. Their leisure activities and cognition were evaluated. Latent class analysis and logistic regression models were used for analysis. The manuscript was organized according to the STROBE guidelines.

Results

We identified three latent classes of leisure activities: multidomain activities (MDA) class (55%), self-improvement activities (SIA) class (21%), and family-centered activities (FCA) class (24%). Three latent classes significantly differed in general characteristics (gender, education, and body mass index) and the prevalence of MCI. The prevalence of MCI was 3.694 times higher in older adults in the FCA class than in older adults in the MDA class (OR = 3.694, P < 0.001) and 2.573 times higher in older adults in the SIA class (OR = 2.573, P = 0.036).

Conclusion

Patterns of low participation in intellectual activities were associated with MCI. Identifying the heterogeneity in leisure activity engagement in later life was critical for tailoring interventions and designing programs that can improve the cognitive function of older adults.

Longitudinal associations of housework with frailty and mortality in older adults: Singapore Longitudinal Ageing Study 2

BACKGROUND

Housework may provide a sustainable form of physical activity for older adults and improve health and survival outcomes. Longitudinal studies on associations between housework status over time and health outcomes are lacking. We aim to assess the longitudinal association of intensity and duration of housework with frailty and mortality outcomes.

METHODS

Among 3270 community-dwelling prospective cohort study participants, aged ≥55 years, data on light housework (N=2996) and heavy housework (N=3022) were available at baseline (March 6, 2009, to June 11, 2013) and follow-up at 3 to 5 years later, (January 16, 2013 to August 24, 2018). Median time spent per week on light (≥420min/week) and heavy (>0min/week) household activities at baseline and follow-up were used to categorise individuals into three groups (i) consistent low levels of housework at both baseline and follow-up, (ii) inconsistent high levels of housework at either baseline or follow-up and (iii) consistent high levels of housework at both baseline and follow-up. Baseline and follow-up frailty index >0.10, and all-cause, cancer and cardiovascular mortality from mean 9.5 years follow-up to March 31, 2021. Effect estimates were adjusted for socio-demographics, nutritional risk, lifestyle and other physical activities.

RESULTS

Overall, participants had mean [SD] age, 66.9 [7.8] years; 1916 [62.7%] were female. Participation in high levels of light and heavy housework consistently over time was associated with decreased odds of prefrailty/frailty at follow-up, [OR,0.61;95%CI,0.40-0.94] and [OR,0.56;95%CI,0.34-0.90] respectively, in the older group aged ≥65, compared to participants with consistent low levels of housework at baseline and follow-up. Sex-stratified analysis revealed an association between regular heavy housework participation and lower prevalence of prefrailty/frailty at follow-up in older men but not women [OR,0.31;95%CI,0.13-0.72]. Regular participation in high levels of light housework was associated with 41% lower risk of all-cause mortality [95%CI,0.36-0.96] in women but not in men, and 54% lower risk of cardiovascular mortality [95%CI,0.22-0.96].

CONCLUSIONS

Regular participation in above average levels of light housework is associated with decreased odds of prefrailty/frailty in older adults aged ≥65 years, and all-cause mortality in older women. Heavy housework participation is associated with decreased odds of prefrailty/frailty, especially in older men aged ≥65. Housework may be a meaningful occupation for older adults and should be encouraged for health and wellbeing.

Time change in the distribution of physical activity and its correlates among retired older Swedish adults: a repeated cross-sectional study from a national survey

Background

Understanding how older adults spend time in moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) is crucial to understanding healthy ageing. This study connects 24-h time-use diary records of the daily activities of a sample of Swedish older adults to energy intensities. The aim was to: i) estimate the prevalence of Swedish older adults (aged 65–84 years) who achieved recommended daily levels of physical activity; ii) identify what domains of everyday life contribute to MVPA; and iii) explore socio-demographic factors affecting rates of active living.

Methods

We draw on two Swedish nationally representative samples of time-use diary data from 2000/2001 and 2010/2011. Data covering the duration of all activities performed over two days were combined with activity-intensity information (metabolic equivalent of task [MET] values) to estimate the energy expenditure (MET min) originating from MVPA.

Results

Results indicate that 94.1% of Swedish older adults achieved the WHO-recommended minimum level of daily MVPA in 2010/2011; the share remained unchanged over the period. MVPA performed in natural environments (24.2%), during housework (22.8%), and on everyday walks in one’s local area (18.1%) were dominant domains contributing to energy expenditure. Home maintenance and repairs (8.8%), active transport (9.9%), and physical exercise (8.2%) contributed to a lesser extent. In 2000/2001, total MVPA energy expenditure was associated with gender, housing, living region, and disability; in 2010/2011, except for disability, these associations were no longer significant.

Conclusions

The high proportion of older adults who achieved the recommended level of MVPA, their allocation of MVPA time to diverse domains, and the reduced social distribution over time suggest that elderly people increasingly find their own paths to everyday physical activity. This indicates a need to promote MVPA not only in established ways, such as prescribed training programmes. The importance of active physical activities in natural environments, and of regular walks in the vicinity of home, indicates a need to incorporate healthy ageing considerations in wider urban and regional planning, for example, to increase access to natural environments and urban walkability. Also, older adults’ involvement in household chores, maintenance and repairs, and active transport extends responsibility to new policy areas.

Association of Physical Activity With Cognitive Function Among Older Adults in Rural Sichuan, China

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between total physical activity and different dimensions of cognitive function (orientation, attention, and memory) among older adults in rural Sichuan, China. This cross-sectional study involved 715 older adults (average age of 72 years). Total PA was measured by the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly, and cognitive function was assessed by the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS) questionnaire. The multivariate linear regression analysis indicated that total PA and household PA were significantly associated with the overall Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status score (β = 0.143, p < .001; β = 0.115, p = .002, respectively), the orientation dimension (β = 0.142, p < .001; β = 0.131, p = .001, respectively), and the memory dimension (β = 0.179, p < .001; β = 0.134, p = .001, respectively). The study showed a positive association between total PA, household PA, and cognitive function in older adults, especially in the orientation dimension and the memory dimension of cognitive function.
