A Case of Left Ventricular Masson's Tumor: Not Every Heart Tumor Is a Myxoma

Masson's tumor is a benign tumor that usually arises secondary to vascular trauma or thrombi, leading to vascular proliferation. Masson's tumors are most commonly reported in the head, neck, and extremities. Cases in the heart are exceedingly rare, with most case reports describing the left atrium as the most common location. Even though the tumor is benign, excision is recommended due to the risk of embolization. This is a case of Masson's tumor located in the left ventricle. The patient is a 24-year-old female, who presented complaining of palpitations and lightheadedness. Transthoracic echocardiography showed a mobile echodensity in the left ventricle. Cardiac MRI showed characteristics similar to a myxoma. The patient underwent surgical resection and a biopsy showed Masson's tumor. This case report focuses on the histopathological features and imaging findings of Masson's tumor.

Cardiac venous malformation concurrent with multiple hepatic venous malformations: A case report

A 50-year-old woman who had previously undergone right radical mastectomy presented with chest tightness and shortness of breath after physical activities. A cardiac mass and multiple hepatic lesions were successively detected. We first performed hepatic puncture biopsy. Histopathologic examination confirmed that the multiple hepatic lesions were venous malformations. Based on the imaging findings and previous reports in the literature, we boldly speculated that the cardiac mass was also a venous malformation. The cardiac venous malformation was successfully resected, and the postoperative pathology confirmed our suspicion.

Rare Case of Cavernous Haemangioma of the Right Atrium with Probable Hepatic Haemangioma

Cardiac haemangiomas are rare causes of atrial masses. This case report is of a 44-year-old male who presented with a right atrial mass that was found incidentally on a CT performed for renal colic. The mass was further investigated with a transthoracic echocardiogram that showed that it was echodense and arising from the Eustachian valve in the right atrium. Coronary angiogram revealed large well-developed atrial branches that crossed superiorly over the left atrium and entered the mass in the right atrium. Surgical resection was undertaken, and this confirmed that the mass had a fleshy, encapsulated appearance with a sessile stalk. Histology demonstrated a cavernous haemangioma. The patient had a residual small defect in the interatrial septum postoperatively but otherwise made a good recovery.

Spontaneous hemangioendothelial cell hyperplasia of the heart in a young ICR mouse

Spontaneous nonneoplastic proliferative lesions of the cardiac hemangioendothelium are extremely rare in humans and animals. Here, we describe a spontaneous hemangioendothelial cell hyperplasia in the heart of a 9-week-old male ICR mouse. The lesion was observed focally in the interventricular septum, with no compression of the surrounding tissues. In the lesion, a single layer of hemangioendothelial cells that had a polygonal shape with enlarged nuclei and plump cytoplasm closely lined surrounding widened capillary vascular spaces and cardiac muscles. There was little cellular atypia, and there were no multilayered endothelial cells. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that these cells were partly positive for factor VIII and CD31, hemangioendothelial cell markers, and negative for Ki-67. These features were consistent with those in aged female B6C3F₁ mice in the only report in mice of spontaneous cardiac hemangioendothelial cell hyperplasia. Therefore, this is the first report of spontaneous hemangioendothelial cell hyperplasia in the heart of a young mouse.

Cardiac Cavernous Hemangioma Coexisting With Pulmonary Cavernous Hemangiomas and Giant Hepatic Hemangioma

We describe a case of cardiac cavernous hemangioma with coexisting pulmonary cavernous hemangiomas and hepatic hemangioma. A 35-year-old woman who had previously received a living donor liver transplant to cure giant hepatic hemangioma was seen because of chest pain. A cardiac neoplasm and multiple pulmonary nodules were detected. The tumor was surgically removed, and biopsy specimens were taken from the lung nodules. Histopathologic examination confirmed that both lesions were cavernous hemangiomas. The patient was discharged without adverse events postoperatively. Cardiac hemangioma is an extremely rare entity; the present case is unique for its multiorgan involvement. Suspicion of this entity should be aroused if the imaging manifestation suggests a vascular nature.

Cardiac capillary hemangioma: a case report and brief review of the literature

Among primary cardiac tumors, hemangiomas are relatively rare, with a reported incidence of 2.8%. To date, less than 100 cases have been reported in literature. We report the case of a 61-year-old woman who complained from chest discomfort since 3 years and in whom transthoracic echocardiography revealed a pedunculated tumor in the left ventricle. The tumor was successfully resected and its histopathological examination revealed a capillary hemangioma. The patient had an uneventful recovery without any complication.

Magnetic resonance imaging of right ventricular papillary endothelial hyperplasia

Papillary endothelial hyperplasia (PEH) is a benign process characterized by endothelial cell proliferation in a papillary pattern, usually occurring in reaction to traumatic vascular stasis or a thrombus. Commonly found in the soft tissues of the neck and extremities, intracardiac lesions in the left atrium, left ventricle, and coronary atherotomy specimens associated with trauma or thrombus have rarely been reported. A single prior report of a pure, isolated form of intracardiac PEH in the literature is noted. To the best of our knowledge, the imaging characteristics have not been described. We describe the dynamic magnetic resonance characteristics of a pure, isolated PEH occurring in the right ventricle.

Cardiac hemangioma in the left ventricle and brief review of the literature

Cardiac hemangiomas are very rare benign cardiac tumors. They can present at any age and clinical presentation varies according to location and size. Most common symptoms include shortness of breath, palpitations, atypical chest pain and arrhythmia. The natural history of these tumors is unpredictable. They can regress, cease growing or proliferate over time. Diagnosis is usually made with echocardiography and surgical resection is the treatment of choice. Follow-up is recommended to identify any recurrence. We report a case of a 38-year-old man who presented with fatigue and palpitations. Echocardiography revealed a mobile spherical mass within the left ventricle, whereas left ventriculography showed an intracavity-filling defect without any tumor blushing. The tumor was removed surgically through the left atrium. It was a smooth oval nodule with a pedicle that was attached to the top of a papillary muscle. Microscopy revealed the presence of numerous vessels within fibrous tissue that ranged from lobules of capillary hemangioma to large thin-walled cavernous vessels, compatible with a hemangioma of mixed capillary-cavernous type. The patient had an uneventful postoperative course and recovered quickly.

Isolated papillary endothelial hyperplasia in the left atrial appendage

Papillary endothelial hyperplasia (PEH) of the heart is extremely rare. This report describes a case of left atrial appendage PEH discovered by intraoperative palpation during mitral valve repair in a 69-year-old woman. The lesion was treated successfully by surgical excision of the left atrial appendage. Immunohistochemistry analysis confirmed the diagnosis and the patient was discharged without any complications.

Papillary Endothelial Hyperplasia of the Adrenal Gland: Report of a Case and Review of the Literature

Papillary endothelial hyperplasia (PEH) is a benign vascular proliferative process most frequently seen in the skin and integument, but may involve any of the visceral organs. It is a rare entity, with less than 30 cases of visceral PEH described in the literature. Adrenal papillary endothelial hyperplasia is an exceedingly rare process and is the basis of this review. A 66-year-old female was referred for evaluation of an asymptomatic 6 cm right adrenal mass. Computed tomography indicated that the lesion was solid and hypervascular. After appropriate workup, the patient underwent laparoscopic adrenalectomy. The pathologic analysis was consistent with adrenal PEH. The patient recovered without incident and is doing well at 1 year follow-up. A review of the world's literature on papillary endothelial hyperplasia (PEH), and in particular adrenal PEH, yields five previous reports of this entity, and no comprehensive review. A compilation of the now six patients with adrenal PEH reveals several common features: five of six patients were female and mean age was 64 years. The disease radiologically mimics adrenal cortical carcinoma mandating a surgical oncological technique. Pathologic differentiation from angiosarcoma can be a difficult task requiring evaluation by an experienced pathologist.

Resection of a left atrial hemangioma. Report of a case and overview of the literature on resected cardiac hemangiomas

We present the case of a 76-year-old woman who presented with dyspnea on exertion. Echocardiography revealed a mass located in the left atrium in proximity to the posterior leaflet of the mitral valve. The mass was successfully excised under cardiopulmonary bypass. Histopathologic analysis showed a capillary hemangioma. Twenty-five months after surgery, the patient remained asymptomatic, and her echocardiogram was normal. Herein, we discuss the histopathology and the clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of hemangiomas. We include a selected overview of the literature on surgically treated patients.
