Increased alpha-fetoprotein concentration in association with ileal adenocarcinoma complicating Crohn's disease

Sexual precocity associated with an abdominal tumor in an African boy

We report a 3 year-old boy in Tanzania with an abdominal mass and isosexual precocity due to an hCG-secreting hepatoblastoma. Due to the limited availability of local diagnostic testing, surgery and chemotherapy were completed before immunohistochemical and endocrine results were available.

A case of small bowel carcinoma in Crohn's disease

A 46-year-old man had symptoms of ileus four years and five months after being diagnosed as Crohn's disease. Upon small bowel radiography, a short, spindle shaped stenosis on the distal site of the ileum was found. In the resected specimen, there was a constricted area with wall hypertrophy, and the mucosal surface of this region was rough and granular. At the site of this region, well differentiated adenocarcinoma was noted, which infiltrated the serosa in the form of mucous adenocarcinoma. Transmural disproportional inflammation and non-caseating granuloma were also around there. The X-ray findings in this case are considered to be useful for diagnosis of carcinoma during the long term observation period for Crohn's disease.

alpha Fetoprotein producing early gastric cancer with liver metastasis: report of three cases

Three cases of alpha fetoprotein producing early gastric cancer are presented. Liver metastases occurred in all patients shortly after curative gastrectomy and all died within two years. The incidence of liver metastasis was significantly higher than that in alpha fetoprotein negative early gastric carcinoma (p less than 0.001). The incidences of lymph node metastasis and invasion in lymph vessels and veins were also substantially higher in this group of patients. Two radical hepatic resections, including extended right lobectomy, were performed on one patient but the tumour recurred immediately.
