Endovascular treatment of mycotic aneurysms: An update meta-analysis

INTRODUCTION

Intracranial mycotic or infectious aneurysms result from the infection of arterial walls, most caused by bacterial or fungal organisms. These infections can weaken the arterial wall, leading to the formation of an aneurysm, a localized dilation, or a bulge. The management can be conservative mainly based on antibiotics or invasive methods such as clipping or endovascular treatment.

PURPOSE

We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the current literature on endovascular treatment of mycotic aneurysms, analyzing the safety and efficacy associated with this procedure.

METHODS

We systematically searched on PUBMED, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science databases. Our search strategy was carefully crafted to conduct a thorough investigation of the topic, utilizing a comprehensive combination of relevant keywords. This meta-analysis included all studies that reported endovascular treatment of mycotic aneurysms. To minimize the risk of bias, studies with fewer than four patients, studies where the main outcome was not found, and studies with no clear differentiation between microsurgical and endovascular treatment were excluded.

RESULTS

In a comprehensive analysis of 134 patients, it was observed that all except one patient received antibiotics as part of their treatment. Among the patients, 56% (a total of 51 out of 90 patients) underwent cardiac surgery. Additionally, three patients required a craniotomy following endovascular treatment. 12 patients experienced morbidity related to the procedures performed, indicating complications arising from the interventions. Furthermore, four aneurysms experienced rebleeding while treatment. A pooled analysis of the endovascular treatment of the mycotic aneurysm revealed a good level of technical success, achieving a 100% success rate in 12 out of 14 studies (97-100%; CI 95%; I2 = 0%), as illustrated in Fig. 2. Similarly, the aneurysm occlusion rate demonstrated a notable efficacy, with a success rate of 97% observed in 12 out of 14 studies (97-100%; CI 95%; I2 = 0%), as depicted in Fig. 3.

CONCLUSION

The results strongly support the efficacy of endovascular treatment in achieving technical success, complete aneurysm occlusion, and favorable neurological outcomes. Additionally, the notably low incidence of complications and procedure-related mortality reaffirms the safety and benefits associated with this intervention.

Ruptured intracranial infectious aneurysms: Single Canadian center experience

Background:

Ruptured intracranial infected aneurysms (IIAs) are relatively rare, but they portend high mortality. To the best of our knowledge, there is no Canadian case series on IIA, as well there is a relative paucity of international published experiences. Our purpose is to share the experience of a single Canadian tertiary center in managing ruptured IIA and to conduct a systematic review.

Methods:

We did a retrospective case review series of adult patients with ruptured IIA treated at our institution. Second, we conducted a systematic review of the literature on ruptured IIA between 2011 and 2021 inclusive.

Results:

At our institution, of a total eight cases with ruptured IIA, four were treated endovascularly and two by surgical bypass. For the systematic review, we included nine noncomparative studies with a total of 509 patients (318 males) and at least 437 ruptured IIA aneurysms. Favorable outcome was specified for 63.3% of patients (n = 57). Regarding ruptured IIA, favorable clinical outcome was described in 59.3% (n = 16).

Conclusion:

This study highlights a single Canadian tertiary center experience in the management of IIA and compares it to the global trends of the past 10 years in a systematic review.

Simultaneous intracerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhages caused by multiple infectious intracranial aneurysms treated endovascularly and by microsurgical clipping: illustrative case

BACKGROUND

Infected intracranial aneurysms are relatively rare but tend to occur in multiple locations. Establishing an optimal treatment strategy for multiple ruptured aneurysms is often challenging, especially when simultaneous ruptures occur in different locations. We report a case of simultaneous intracerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhages caused by the rupture of multiple infected intracranial aneurysms.

OBSERVATIONS

A 23-year-old male with a 2-week history of chronic fever presented with sudden onset of severe headache and visual disturbance. Computed tomography showed intracerebral hemorrhage in the right occipital lobe and subarachnoid hemorrhage in the area of the left Sylvian fissure. Further investigation documented Staphylococcus bacteremia, verrucae on the mitral valve, and aneurysms arising from the right posterior cerebral artery (PCA) and the left middle cerebral artery (MCA). A larger aneurysm arising from the PCA was successfully occluded endovascularly, but subsequent endovascular occlusion of the MCA aneurysm was unsuccessful because some important branches were observed extending from the aneurysm. The left MCA aneurysm was then obliterated by angioplastic clipping via left pterional craniotomy. The patient showed a favorable neurological recovery after treatment.

LESSONS

In such complex cases of infectious aneurysms, the method and timing of treatment need to be carefully determined based on the medical condition.

Safety Profile and Factors Associated With Good Outcome for Endovascularly Treated Infectious Intracranial Aneurysms

BACKGROUND

Infectious intracranial aneurysms (IIAs), or mycotic aneurysms, are infectious inflammatory lesions that can cause devastating neurological damage or death. Recent systemic reviews have suggested endovascular treatment to be efficacious for IIA management.

OBJECTIVE

To compare the safety profile of different endovascular methods for treating ruptured and unruptured IIAs and factors associated with good clinical and radiographic outcomes.

METHODS

We conducted a retrospective single study of endovascularly treated ruptured and unruptured IIAs between 2003 and 2019. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to study patient presentation, endovascular treatments used, and clinical and radiographic outcomes.

RESULTS

Thirty-eight patients with ruptured (n = 20) and unruptured (n = 18) IIAs treated with endovascular methods were included. One patient required retreatment after aneurysm recanalization, and 2 patients demonstrated new infarcts after embolization. There was no postprocedural radiographic hemorrhage or infarct and no difference in clinical and radiographic outcomes comparing treatment modality. Hypertension was associated with ruptured IIA status and worse clinical outcome at 6 mo (odds ratio: 0.03 [95% confidence interval: 0.002-0.52]).

CONCLUSION

In this study, the largest single-center series to date, we showed that endovascular intervention is a safe and effective strategy for both ruptured and unruptured IIAs. Hypertension was associated with ruptured status and worse clinical outcome. Procedures are generally well-tolerated and safe, with good outcomes for patients.

Intracranial Mycotic Aneurysm after Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation Treated with Trans-arterial Embolization via the Brachial Artery: A Case Report

Implantation of left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is widely performed in patients with end-stage chronic heart failure. Infection and stroke are major complications after LVAD implantation. However, the incidence of intracranial mycotic aneurysm after LVAD implantation is rare, and with no standard of care. In this study, we describe a case of an intracranial mycotic aneurysm after LVAD implantation that was successfully treated with trans-arterial embolization (TAE) with N-butyl 2-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) via the brachial artery. A 49-year-old man with a history of implantation of LVAD for ischemic cardiomyopathy was admitted to our institution. He had infectious endocarditis and was administered systemic antibiotics. At 3 weeks after admission, intracranial mycotic aneurysm of the left posterior parietal artery was detected during a diagnostic examination for asymptomatic intracranial hemorrhage. Anticoagulant therapy was administered to prevent thromboembolic complications of LVAD implantation. Under local anesthesia, TAE with NBCA was performed via the brachial artery because of the tortuous anatomy of the origin of the innominate artery and implant of the aortic arch. The aneurysm was completely obliterated. The patient was discharged without neurological deficits. TAE using NBCA could be an effective modality for the treatment of intracranial mycotic aneurysm after LVAD implantation.

Endovascular treatment of infectious intracranial aneurysms complicating infective endocarditis: a series of 31 patients with 55 aneurysms

PURPOSE

Endovascular treatment (EVT) has become a major option in management of infectious intracranial aneurysms (IIAs) complicating infective endocarditis. We report a retrospective, single-center series of consecutive patients with IIAs treated by EVT.

METHODS

Patients were included from January 2009 to July 2020. IIAs were diagnosed on DSA. Each patient underwent a neurological assessment before and after EVT and was followed up by imaging within 15 days of EVT. Safety was assessed on the evolution of NIHSS score. A minor stroke was defined as a worsening of NIHSS < 4 points. Efficacy was defined as the absence of hemorrhagic event during cardiac surgery and the exclusion of the IIA on control imaging.

RESULTS

Sixty-two IIAs (30 ruptured) were diagnosed in 31 patients. Fifty-six IIAs were diagnosed on the first DSA and 6 on the early control exploration. EVT was achieved in 55 IIAs by parent artery occlusion with glue in 52 distal IIAs and coils in 3 proximal IIAs. IIAs were located in 90.9% of cases on a fourth-division branch of a cerebral artery. The neurological examination remained unchanged in 29 patients (93.5%), and 2 patients suffered minor stroke. EVT was performed before cardiac surgery in 20/22 patients. All treated IIAs were excluded on follow-up imaging. No hemorrhage was observed during cardiac surgery or in the aftermath. Seven (11.3%) unruptured IIAs were not embolized.

CONCLUSION

EVT of IIAs by occlusion of the parent artery is effective in preventing rupture and carries no significant neurological risk.

Treatment of experimental aneurysms with a GPX embolic agent prototype: preliminary angiographic and histological results

Background

Recently, liquid embolic agents have emerged for the endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms. Here we describe the in vivo performance of a novel liquid embolization agent (GPX Embolic Device).

Methods

Elastase-induced aneurysms were embolized with a GPX prototype under balloon assistance. Digital subtraction angiography was performed pre-deployment and immediately after, and at 5, 10, and 30 min post-deployment in 10 rabbits and at 1 month in 8 rabbits. The early post-deployment intra-aneurysmal flow was graded as unchanged, moderately diminished, or completely absent. At 1 month the status of aneurysm occlusion was evaluated. Adhesion to catheter material and migration of GPX was assessed.

Results

The mean aneurysm neck diameter, width, and height were 3.6±1.0 mm, 3.0±0.8 mm, and 7.4±1.4 mm, respectively. The mean dome-to-neck ratio was 0.9±0.2. Complete stagnation of intra-aneurysmal flow was observed in 9 of 10 aneurysms (90%) within 30 min of device deployment. One aneurysm showed moderately diminished intra-aneurysmal flow at 30 min. At 1 month, 8 aneurysms were completely occluded. There was no evidence of GPX adhesion to the catheter material. Histologically, a leukocyte and foreign body reaction to GPX was detectable 28 days after embolization.

Conclusions

This is the first preclinical study reporting the performance of a protype version of the GPX Embolic Device in a wide-neck aneurysm model. GPX showed promising results by achieving and maintaining high rates of complete angiographic occlusion, but may induce an inflammatory reaction.

A review of endovascular cerebral mycotic aneurysm treatment with Onyx liquid embolic, N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (NBCA), or coil embolization has not been reported. The authors conduct a systematic review on endovascular treatment methods of mycotic aneurysms.

METHODS

A systematic literature review was performed using the PubMed and MEDLINE databases for studies published between 1986 and 2020. All studies assessing outcomes related to endovascular Onyx embolization, NBCA embolization, or coiling were included.

RESULTS

A total of 74 studies were ultimately selected, including 180 (67% male) patients comprising 243 aneurysms treated endovascularly. The mean age was 38.2 ± 17.6 years, and the most common symptom on presentation was headache (31%). Most aneurysms were located on the middle cerebral artery (52.5%), and over half presented with rupture (53.8%). Coiling was the most commonly employed technique (50.4%), and obliteration rates were comparable across coiling, NBCA, and Onyx (99.1%, 100%, 100%, respectively). Complication rates were also comparable (4.3% vs. 15.2% vs. 8.1%).

CONCLUSION

Embolization for infectious intracranial aneurysm appears to be an effective treatment option for mycotic aneurysms. Embolization rates were comparable between coiling, NBCA, and Onyx embolization. Noninferiority among these modalities cannot be demonstrated given the retrospective nature of this review, evolution of endovascular techniques over the years, and changes in treatment paradigms in the last 2 decades. Ideally, further prospective research will be needed to find which treatment method offers the lowest complication rates and the best outcomes for patients with mycotic aneurysms.

Successful flow diversion treatment of ruptured infectious middle cerebral artery aneurysms with the use of Pipeline Flex with Shield technology

BACKGROUND

Rupture of infectious intracranial aneurysms (IIAs) is associated with a high likelihood of mortality. Endovascular treatment of IIAs via parent artery sacrifice offers good efficacy and outcomes; however, depending on the lesion's location, neurologic deficit may result.

CASE DESCRIPTION

We describe a pediatric patient with ruptured IIAs off the left middle cerebral artery (MCA) treated with coil embolization and endovascular flow diversion using the Pipeline Flex Embolization Device (PED) with Shield technology. We chose to place a flow diverter because 1) there was a second, more distal IIA not amenable to direct coil embolization, 2) there was significant potential for aneurysm regrowth and need for retreatment, and 3) we believed the diseased parent MCA needed to be reconstructed.

CONCLUSIONS

In the setting of previous hemicraniectomy, PED-Shield gave us the option to discontinue dual antiplatelet therapy should the patient require further neurosurgical intervention. Our case supports a role for PED-Shield to address ruptured pseudoaneurysms.

Rapid formation and rupture of an infectious basilar artery aneurysm from meningitis following suprasellar region meningioma removal: a case report

Background

Infectious basilar artery (BA) aneurysm has been occasionally reported to be generated from meningitis following transcranial operation. However, infectious BA aneurysm formed by intracranial infection after endoscopic endonasal operation has never been reported.

Case presentation

A 53-year-old man who was diagnosed with suprasellar region meningioma received tumor removal via endoscopic endonasal approach. After operation he developed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak and intracranial infection. The patient ultimately recovered from infection after anti-infective therapy, but a large fusiform BA aneurysm was still formed and ruptured in a short time. Interventional and surgical measures were impossible due to the complicated shape and location of aneurysm and state of his endangerment, therefore, conservative anti-infective therapy was adopted as the only feasible method. Unfortunately, the aneurysm did not disappear and the patient finally died from repeating subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).

Conclusion

Though extremely rare, it was emphasized that infectious aneurysm can be formed at any stage after transnasal surgery, even when the meningitis is cured. Because of the treatment difficulty and poor prognosis, it was recommended that thorough examination should be timely performed for suspicious patient to make correct diagnosis and avoid fatal SAH.

Treatment Strategies for Infectious Intracranial Aneurysms: Report of Three Cases and Review of the Literature

We retrospectively reviewed the cases of three patients with infectious intracranial aneurysms (IIAs), and discuss the indications for surgical and endovascular treatments. We treated two men and one woman with a total of six aneurysms. The mean age was 43.3 years, ranging from 36 to 51 years. One patient presented initially with an intraparenchymal hemorrhage, one with mass effect, and the other one had four aneurysms (one causing subarachnoid hemorrhages and the other causing delayed intraparenchymal hemorrhages). The average size of all aneurysms was 12.2 mm (range, 2–50 mm). They were preferentially located in the distal posterior cerebral artery, and then, in the middle cerebral artery. All cases were caused by infective endocarditis. We selected endovascular treatments for five aneurysms and treated all but one within 24 h from detection. One aneurysm was treated by combined therapy with endovascular intervention and surgery. After treatment, none of the IIAs presented angiographical recurrence or re-bleeding. If feasible, endovascular treatment is probably the first choice, but a combined surgical and endovascular approach should be considered if surgery or endovascular treatment alone are not feasible. The method of treatment should be individualized. For cases with high risk of aneurysm rupture, treatment should be performed as soon as possible.

Cerebral Intraparenchymal Hemorrhage: A Review

IMPORTANCE

Although spontaneous intraparenchymal hemorrhage (IPH) accounts for less than 20% of cases of stroke, it continues to be associated with the highest mortality of all forms of stroke and substantial morbidity rates.

OBSERVATIONS

Early identification and management of IPH is crucial. Blood pressure control, reversal of associated coagulopathy, care in a dedicated stroke unit, and identification of secondary etiologies are essential to optimizing outcomes. Surgical management of hydrocephalus and space occupying hemorrhage in the posterior fossa are accepted forms of treatment. Modern advances in minimally invasive surgical management of primary, supratentorial IPH are being explored in randomized trials. Hemorrhagic arteriovenous malformations and cavernous malformations are surgically excised if accessible, while hemorrhagic dural arteriovenous fistulas and distal/mycotic aneurysms are often managed with embolization if feasible.

CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE

IPH remains a considerable source of neurological morbidity and mortality. Rapid identification, medical management, and neurosurgical management, when indicated, are essential to facilitate recovery. There is ongoing evaluation of minimally invasive approaches for evacuation of primary IPH and evolution of surgical and endovascular techniques in the management of lesions leading to secondary IPH.

Balloon occlusion technique with ethylene vinyl alcohol for the treatment of a pediatric pulmonary artery mycotic aneurysm

Mycotic aneurysms, which may occur anywhere in the body, may be prone to spontaneous rupture. Antibiotic therapy combined with surgical debridement without or with revascularization has been described as potential treatment options. This report describes a combined balloon occlusion technique with the injection of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer for the treatment of a mycotic aneurysm of the pulmonary artery secondary to infective endocarditis. Similar techniques have been described in the cerebral circulation and may obviate concerns for coil erosion, non-target embolization, or superinfection.

Endovascular Embolization of Intracranial Infectious Aneurysms in Patients Undergoing Open Heart Surgery Using n-Butyl Cyanoacrylate

INTRODUCTION

Mycotic aneurysms are a serious complication of infective endocarditis with increased risk of intracranial hemorrhage. Patients undergoing open heart surgery for valve repair or replacement are exposed to anticoagulants, increasing the risk of aneurysm bleeding. These patients may require endovascular or surgical aneurysm treatment prior to heart surgery, but data on this approach are scarce.

METHODS

Retrospective review of consecutive patients with infectious endocarditis and mycotic aneurysms treated endovascularly with Trufill n-butyl cyanoacrylate (n-BCA) at the Cleveland Clinic between January 2013 and December 2015.

RESULTS

Nine patients underwent endovascular treatment of mycotic aneurysms with n-BCA (mean age of 39 years). On imaging, 4 patients had intracerebral hemorrhage, 2 had multiple embolic infarcts, and the rest had no imaging findings. Twelve mycotic aneurysms were detected (3 patients with 2 aneurysms). Seven aneurysms were in the M4 middle cerebral artery segment, 4 in the posterior cerebral artery distribution, and 1 in the callosomarginal branch. n-BCA was diluted in ethiodized oil (1:1 to 1:2). Embolization was achieved in a single rapid injection with immediate microcatheter removal. Complete aneurysm exclusion was achieved in all cases without complications. All patients underwent open heart surgery and endovascular embolization within a short interval, 2 with both procedures on the same day. There were no new hemorrhages after aneurysm embolization.

CONCLUSIONS

Endovascular embolization of infectious intracranial aneurysms with liquid embolics can be performed successfully in critically ill patients requiring immediate open heart surgery and anticoagulation. Early embolization prior to and within a short interval from open heart surgery is feasible.

Interdisciplinary Treatment of Intracranial Infectious Aneurysms

OBJECTIVE

Intracranial infectious aneurysms (IIAs) are a rare clinical entity without a definitive treatment guideline. In this study, we evaluate the treatment options of these lesions based on our own clinical experience and review the current knowledge of therapy as portrayed in the literature.

METHODS

We conducted a single-center retrospective analysis of all patients with an IIA and performed a systematic review of the literature using the MEDLINE database. We undertook a comprehensive literature search using the OVID gateway of the MEDLINE database (1950-October 2015) using the following keywords (in combination): 'infectious', 'mycotic', 'cerebral aneurysm', 'intracranial aneurysm'. 1,721 potentially relevant abstracts were identified and 63 studies were selected for full review. The studies were analysed regarding ruptured versus unruptured aneurysms, aneurysm localization and treatment, as well as clinical and radiological outcome.

RESULTS

Our institutional series consisted of 6 patients (median age 57 [32-76]) treated between 2011 and 2015. All patients presented with ruptured IIAs located on the middle cerebral artery (MCA, 5 patients) and anterior cerebral artery (ACA, 1 patient). Five patients were treated by clipping and resecting the aneurysm, 1 patient underwent coiling. All patients received antibiotic therapy and 1 patient died. We further identified 814 patients (median age 35.5 [0-81]) in 63 studies. Locations of the aneurysms were mentioned in 55 studies. The most frequent locations of the aneurysms were: MCA (63.5%), posterior cerebral artery (14%), ACA (9.0%) and others (13.5%). Treatment for IIAs was described in 62 studies: antibiotic treatment (56.1%), a combination of antibiotics and surgery (20.9%) or antibiotics and endovascular treatment (23.0%). Outcome was mentioned in 82.4% of the patients with a mortality rate of 16.8%. An evaluation of treatment outcome was limited due to the heterogeneity of patients in the published case series.

CONCLUSION

Antibiotic therapy of patients with IIA is mandatory. However, due to the complexity of the disease and its accompanying comorbidities, a general treatment algorithm could not be defined. Analogous to non-mycotic aneurysms, further treatment decisions require an interdisciplinary approach involving neurosurgeons, interventionists and infectious disease specialists.

Management of infectious intracranial aneurysms in the pediatric population

INTRODUCTION

Infectious intracranial aneurysms (IIAs) account for approximately 15 % of all pediatric intracranial aneurysms. Histologically, they are pseudoaneurysms that develop in response to an inflammatory reaction within the adventitia and muscularis layers, ultimately resulting in disruption of both the internal elastic membrane and the intima. The majority of pediatric IIAs are located within the anterior circulation, and they can be multiple in 15-25 % of cases.

BACKGROUND

The most common presentation for an IIA is intracerebral and/or subarachnoid hemorrhage. In children with a known diagnosis of infective endocarditis who develop new neurological manifestations, it is imperative to exclude the existence of an IIA. The natural history of untreated infectious aneurysms is ominous; they demonstrate a high incidence of spontaneous rupture. High clinical suspicion, prompt diagnosis, and adequate treatment are of paramount importance to prevent devastating neurological consequences.

DISCUSSION

The prompt initiation of intravenous broad-spectrum antibiotics represents the mainstay of treatment. Three questions should guide the management of pediatric patients with IIAs: (a) aneurysm rupture status, (b) the presence of intraparenchymal hemorrhage or elevated intracranial pressure, and (c) relationship of the parent vessel to eloquent brain tissue. Those three questions should orient the treating physician into either antibiotic therapy alone or in combination with microsurgical or endovascular interventions. This review discusses important aspects of the epidemiology, the diagnosis, and the management of IIAs in the pediatric population.

Results and current trends of multimodality treatment for infectious intracranial aneurysms

The authors retrospectively reviewed their cases of infectious intracranial aneurysms and discuss results and trends of current treatment modalities including medical, neurosurgical, and endovascular. Twenty patients (10 males and 10 females; mean age 46 years) with 23 infectious aneurysms were treated by various treatment modalities during a 15-year period. Fifteen cases (75.0%) were caused by infective endocarditis. Eleven aneurysms (47.8%) were ruptured. Two aneurysms (8.7%) presented a mass effect and 7 (30.4%) were unruptured and asymptomatic. The average aneurysm size was 6.5 ± 4.8 mm (range 1–22 mm). The aneurysms were located in proximal cerebral circulation in 7 (30.4%) and distal in 16 (69.6%). Six (26.1%) aneurysms were treated surgically (5: trapping, 1: neck clipping), 10 (43.5%) endovascularly (7: trapping, 2: proximal occlusion, 1: saccular coiling), and the remaining 7 (30.4%) medically. Endovascular treatment was gradually increased with time. Medical and surgical treatments were continuously performed during the study period. Surgery was preferred for the patient with intraparenchymal hematoma or treated by bypass surgery. Three periprocedural minor complications occurred in endovascular treatment. There was one postoperative infarction with permanent deficit developed from surgical treatment. During the follow-up period (mean 28.8 months), none of the aneurysms presented a recurrence or rebleeding. Thirteen patients (65.0%) had favorable clinical outcomes (modified Rankin Scale: 0–2), although four (20.0%) had poor outcomes (modified Rankin Score: 5–6). A multimodal approach for the management of infectious aneurysms achieved satisfactory results. Endovascular intervention is a feasible and efficacious treatment option and surgical intervention is still an indispensable procedure.

Central nervous system infection after Onyx embolisation of arterio-venous malformations in two paediatric patients

BACKGROUND

Increasingly, Onyx is used for endovascular embolization of aneurysms and arterio-venous malformations. Although reports in the literature on the use of Onyx are favourable, there have been so far no reports on the central nervous system (CNS) infection rate after embolisation with Onyx and no recommendations as to the management of these infections.

CASE REPORTS

We present two cases of paediatric patients who acquired CNS infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa after Onyx embolisation of AVMs and describe their subsequent management.

CONCLUSIONS

Presence of established infection after Onyx embolisation should be dealt with by removal of infected material, administration of appropriate antibiotic therapy and supportive treatment.
