The Natural Course of Endobronchial Inflammatory Polyps as a Complication after Endobronchial Ultrasound-Guided Transbronchial Needle Aspiration

We presented a case of unusual endobronchial inflammatory polyps as a complication following endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) in a patient with tuberculous lymphadenitis. EBUS-TBNA of the right hilar lymph node was performed in a 29-year-old, previously healthy man. The patient was confirmed with tuberculous lymphadenitis and received antituberculosis medication over the course of 6 months. Chest computed tomography, after 6 months of antituberculosis therapy following the EBUS-TBNA showed nodular bronchial wall thickening of the right main bronchus. Histological and microbiological examinations revealed inflammatory polyps. After 7 months, the inflammatory polyps regressed almost completely without need for removal.

Tracheobronchial polyps following thermal inhalation injury

The early pulmonary consequences of inhalation injury are well documented; however, little is known about delayed pulmonary complications following thermal inhalation injury. Although thermal injury below the vocal cords is rare because of effective heat dissipation in the upper airway, inflammatory endobronchial polyps have previously been reported as a delayed complication associated with inhalation injury. We report an extraordinary case of tracheobronchial polyps in patients with smoke inhalation injury. This report shows the delayed development and natural course of tracheobronchial polyps following thermal injury.

Endobronchial inflammatory polyp as a rare complication of endobronchial ultrasound-transbronchial needle aspiration

Endobronchial ultrasound-transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) offers a minimally invasive option for staging the mediastinum in suspected lung cancer but also in the diagnosis of mediastinal lesions accessible from the airways. EBUS-TBNA has been widely used for the evaluation of mediastinal and hilar lesions for several reasons, such as its minimally invasive nature, high diagnostic accuracy, needle aspiration under real-time visualization and excellent safety profile. Several recent studies have demonstrated that EBUS-TBNA have diagnostic accuracy equivalent to mediastinoscopy and in fact higher for certain lymph node stations. The present case report presents endobronchial inflammatory polyp as a complication after EBUS-TBNA in patients with tuberculous lymphadenitis and discusses the possible etiology of this complication, as well as implications for further application of this technology in patients with tuberculous lymphadenitis.

Endobronchial polyp derived from a myxosarcoma in the lung of a dog

An endobronchial polyp was visible radiographically and bronchoscopically in an 11-year-old, mixed-breed dog with a persistent cough. The polyp was removed by traction. Initial histological examination suggested it was a myxomatous fibroma. The cough resolved but recurred with polyp regrowth. Two additional lung masses became visible radiographically. The polyp was removed twice more at 6-month intervals. Euthanasia was performed 15 months after first presentation when coughing recurred soon after the final bronchoscopy. Histological examination revealed that the mass was a myxomatous sarcoma. The lung contained two other unrelated tumors: a bronchioloalveolar carcinoma and a carcinoma of unknown origin.

Tracheal polyp

Benign tumors of the tracheobronchial tree are extremely rare. A case of a benign inflammatory endotracheal polyp and literature review are presented, including classification and treatment options. Although rare, these lesions must be efficiently diagnosed and expeditiously removed to prevent airway occlusion or irreversible pulmonary disease.

Inflammatory endobronchial polyposis with bronchiectasis in cystic fibrosis

An unusual case of endobronchial polyposis associated with extensive bronchiectasis in the context of cystic fibrosis (CF) has been described. A 15-yr-old female patient with CF underwent partial pneumonectomy for extensive bronchiectasis and frequent infective pulmonary exacerbations. Cylindrical bronchiectasis with associated purulent bronchitis and bronchiolitis, together with inflammatory polyposis, was noted in the resected lung. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of multiple endobronchial polyposis and may represent a rare complication of bronchiectasis in a patient with cystic fibrosis. On-going infection and the cellular composition of the polyps are discussed in relation to their possible aetiological relevance and relationship to upper respiratory tract polyps.
