Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to explore college students' perceptions of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and their thoughts on prevention measures. DESIGN AND METHODS A qualitative descriptive design was used. The study adopted purposive sampling at two universities in northern Taiwan and one in central Taiwan. Twenty-six college students participated, and data saturation was reached. Content analysis was undertaken. RESULTS Four main themes emerged from the data narratives: 1) having very little knowledge of HPV infection, 2) being concerned about outcomes of HPV infection, 3) taking measures to protect oneself, and 4) expecting to have HPV prevention resources. CONCLUSIONS The results indicated that college students needed a more complete understanding of HPV and prevention methods to protect themselves from infection. Schools were an ideal place to provide adequate information on HPV prevention. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS The study suggested providing HPV-related information through school health centers and government health departments to resolve common questions and misunderstandings about HPV infection. Healthcare professionals should have a complete understanding of HPV-related knowledge in order to provide detailed information to young people.

Abstract
Prospective data are limited on human papillomavirus (HPV) acquisition and clearance among circumcised men from resource-limited geographical regions, particularly Africa. The goal of this study was to estimate incidence and clearance of type-specific genital HPV infection in men. Penile exfoliated cell specimens were collected from the glans/coronal sulcus and shaft of 1,037 circumcised Kenyan men at baseline and 6-, 12- and 18-month follow-up visits between 2003-2007. Specimens were tested with GP5+/6+ PCR to detect 44 HPV types. The median age of participants at baseline was 21 years (range 18-28). The 12- and 18-month incidence rates (IRs) for any HPV were 34.9/100 person-years (95% confidence interval [CI]: 31.2-39.0) and 36.4/100 person-years (95% CI: 32.9-40.2), respectively. The 18-month cumulative risk for high-risk HPV was 30% compared to 16% for low-risk HPV. Cumulative risk was not associated with age or anatomical site. The estimated probability of any HPV infection clearing by 12 months was 0.92. Time until HPV clearance was not associated with age, anatomical site, or whether HPV infection type was high-risk or low-risk. HPV IRs among circumcised men in this study were comparable to other circumcised populations.

Abstract
Objectives: Epidemiological reports of sexual life and human papilloma virus (HPV) infection among Japanese men are scarce, and the necessity of HPV vaccines for males is regarded as a controversial topic in Japan. The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence, genotype distribution, and risk factors against HPV infections targeted by bivalent (2v), quadrivalent (4v), and 9-valent (9v) HPV vaccines among Japanese male patients who visited our urological clinics. Material and Methods: The study population consisted of 798 males aged 20 to 95 years (mean ± standard deviation, 55.4 ± 19.5 years). We collected scraping samples from the glans penis using cotton swabs from all patients for genotyping of HPVs. We compared patients’ characteristics and detected HPV genotypes in order to determine the risk factors against HPV infections. Results: Of 798 participants, 198 participants (198/798; 24.8%) had at least one genotype of any HPV infection. The total number of detected HPV genotypes was 328. Of 328 genotypes, 30% (n = 99; 99/328) were 9v HPV genotypes. Most frequently detected types of high-risk HPV infection were type 52 (n = 40; 40/328; 12.2%). Number of lifetime sex partners (≥21) and present or history of sexually transmitted infections were found to be predictors of any HPV infection with adjusted odds ratios of 3.106 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.593–6.509) and 1.894 (95% CI, 1.185–3.026), respectively. Age of sex initiation was a predictor of 2v and 4v HPV infections with adjusted odds ratios of 100 (95% CI, 1.013–25.673) and 2.676 (95% CI, 1.037–6.905), respectively. Number of lifetime sex partners (≥21) was a predictor of 9v HPVs with adjusted odds ratios of 2.397 (95% CI, 1.060–5.424). Conclusions: Approximately, a quarter of Japanese male patients who visited urological clinics were exposed to HPV. Moreover, from the perspective of our multivariate logistic regression analysis, some kinds of sexual behavior aggravate the risk of typical HPV genotypes infections.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some studies on human papillomavirus (HPV) provide not only type-specific incidence rates (IR), but also IRs of HPV groupings (e.g. the nonavalent grouping). We made an inventory of the different approaches used to calculate such IRs and assessed their impact on the estimated IRs of HPV groupings. METHODS We performed a systematic review assessing all approaches used in literature to estimate IRs. Subsequently we applied these approaches to data of a Dutch cohort study on HPV in men who have sex with men (H2M). IRs were estimated for six different HPV groupings. RESULTS The systematic review yielded six different approaches (A-F) for estimating the IRs, varying in exclusion criteria at baseline, and the definitions of an incident event and person-time. Applying these approaches to the H2M dataset (n = 749), we found differences in the number of participants at risk, number of incidents events, person-time, and IR. For example, for the nonavalent grouping, depending on the approach chosen, the IR varied between 3.09 and 6.54 per 100 person-months. CONCLUSION In published studies different epidemiological assumptions are used to estimate IRs of grouped HPV types, leading to widely differing estimates of IRs. IRs between different studies may therefore not be comparable.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human papillomavirus (HPV)-induced lesions rarely develop in the urethral meatus (UM); however, their eradication can be problematic. METHODS A total of 22 patients with anogenital warts (AGWs) in the UM region and 22 patients with AGWs located at other anatomical sites were included in this cross-sectional study. The presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) types in biopsy samples was determined using the HPV Easy typing kit (GenID GmbH, Germany). RESULTS Although the patients in the AGW group with involvement of the UM had a higher incidence of reported multiple sexual partners (63.6% vs. 40.9%), larger meatus size (81.8% vs. 36.4%), and more frequent anal (36.4% vs. 18.2%) or unprotected sexual contact (68.2% vs. 36.4%) than those in the AGW group without UM involvement, only the duration of lesions (p = 0.04) and meatus size (p = 0.004) were significantly different in both groups. Low-risk HPV types were found in 75.0% and 69.2% of patients in the AGW groups with and without UM involvement, respectively. CONCLUSION We found that a larger UM size was more prone to the development of meatus AGWs; however, being married, delaying sexual debut, and avoidance of multiple sexual partners seemed to be associated with a decreased risk of development of AGWs, especially within the UM region.

Abstract
Background: Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Botswana. More than two-thirds of cases occur in HIV-infected women, in a nation with a high HIV prevalence of 17%. Even though cancer screening is free in health facilities, cervical cancer screening is low. The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge and attitudes of University of Botswana female students on cervical cancer screening. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among University of Botswana female students to elicit information about their knowledge and attitudes on cervical cancer screening. Results: A total of 335 students completed the questionnaire and all reported that they were aware of cervical cancer. The awareness was mostly through brochures, posters and other printed material. Regarding cervical cancer risk 315 (94%) attributed cervical cancer to smoking and 301 (89.9%) to early sexual debut. The majority of students 329 (98.2 %) were aware of cervical cancer screening. Papanicolaou (Pap) smear was the most popular screening test reported by 160 (47.8%) of the respondents as compared to Human Papilloma Virus testing (HPV) reported by 106 (31.6 %) of the respondents. The overall Pap smear screening rate was 92 of 335 students (27.5%). Those who perceived themselves to be at risk of contracting cervical cancer 203 (60.6%) where 1.8 times more likely to go for Pap smear than those who perceived to be safe, (Adjusted Odds Ratio [AOR] 1.834; 95% Confidence Interval [CI]; 1.094-3.067), (P = 0.02). Conclusions: Pap smear screening uptake is low amongst University of Botswana female students. The likely reason for this could be because students do not perceive themselves to be susceptible to cancer so the lesser the likelihood of engaging in preventive behaviours. There is urgent need for university based cancer education campaign on cervical cancer screening benefits and incorporating these campaigns into the existing university medical services to increase uptake of screening programs offered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Persistent high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection is associated with the development of anogenital cancers, particularly in men living with HIV (MLWH). We describe the prevalence of anogenital HPV infection, abnormal anal cytology and anogenital warts (AGWs) in MLWH in Johannesburg, and explore whether HPV infection and receipt of antiretroviral treatment is associated with detection of abnormal anal cytology and AGWs. METHODS We enrolled a cohort of 304 sexually-active MLWH ≥18 years, who completed a questionnaire and physical examination. Genital swabs were collected from all men and intra-anal swabs from 250 (82%). Swabs were tested for HPV DNA and genotypes, and anal smears graded using the Bethesda classification. Factors associated with anogenital disease were assessed by logistic regression models. RESULTS Two thirds were receiving antiretroviral treatment, for a median 33 months (IQR = 15-58) and 54% were HIV-virologically suppressed. Only 5% reported ever having sex with men. Among 283 genital swabs with valid results, 79% had any HPV, 52% had HR-HPV and 27% had >1 HR-HPV infection. By comparison, 39% of the 227 valid intra-anal swabs had detectable HPV, 25% had any HR-HPV and 7% >1 HR infection. While most anal smears were normal (51%), 20% had ASCUS and 29% were LSIL. No cases had HSIL or cancer. Infection with >1 HR type (adjusted OR [aOR] = 2.39; 95%CI = 1.02-5.58) and alpha-9 types (aOR = 3.98; 95%CI = 1.42-11.16) were associated with having abnormal cytology. Prevalence of AGWs was 12%. Infection with any LR type (aOR = 41.28; 95%CI = 13.57-125.62), >1 LR type (aOR = 4.14; 95%CI = 1.60-10.69), being <6 months on antiretroviral treatment (aOR = 6.90; 95%CI = 1.63-29.20) and having a CD4+ count <200 cells/μL (aOR = 5.48; 95%CI: 1.60-18.78) were associated with having AGWs. CONCLUSIONS In this population, anogenital HR-HPV infection and associated low-grade disease is common, but severe anal dysplasia was not detected. Findings reinforce the need for HPV vaccination in men for preventing both AGWs and HR-HPV infection. Given the absence of anal HSILs, however, the findings do not support the use of anal screening programmes in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines were designed to prevent cervical cancer in women and their provision remains a major public health need. However, HPV is also a major cause of non-cervical anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers and the potential benefit of vaccination likely extends beyond cervical cancer. METHODS A systematic literature search of PubMed (1995-2014) identified publications assessing the incidence, persistence, and clearance of non-cervical anogenital/oral HPV infections. Comparability with cervical HPV was assessed by identifying articles assessing the same or similar populations. RESULTS Available data suggest high incidence rates of non-cervical HPV infection in men and women, with HPV-16 predominating in all sites. The incidence of high risk HPV per 100 person-years ranged from 11.4 to 72.9 for penile infections, 6.7-47.9 at other male genital sites, and 4.4-36.7 and 5.3-23.4 for anal infections in men and women, respectively. The incidence per 100 person-years of oral infection with any HPV type ranged from 5.7 to 6.7 in men and 6.8-39.6 in women. Within the limitations of the data, there was a general pattern of higher incidence and clearance of non-cervical genital HPV infections, compared to cervical infections. HIV status, circumcision, number of sex partners and partner HPV status significantly influenced high-risk HPV incidence/clearance at male anogenital sites. Few studies assessed risk factors for oral HPV. CONCLUSIONS Parallels appear to exist between the epidemiology of cervical and non-cervical HPV infections in terms of incidence, HPV-type distribution, and risk factors for infection. Available data suggest that non-cervical genital HPV infections may occur more frequently, with higher clearance rates, than cervical infections. More extensive studies could provide useful information for estimating vaccine impact, the wider cost-benefit of HPV vaccination, and guiding vaccination policy. Abstract
Background. Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes a spectrum of disease, ranging from warts to cancer. Prevalence, incidence, and factors associated with anogenital warts in East African men are unknown. Methods. Kenyan men reporting high-risk sexual behavior were inspected for anogenital warts at enrollment and follow-up visits. Logistic regression was performed to identify associations with anogenital warts at baseline. Cox regression was performed to analyze predictors of incident anogenital warts, and Kaplan-Meier curves were used to estimate clearance. Results. Baseline anogenital wart prevalence in 1137 men was 2.9% (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.0%-4.0%) overall, 2.0% in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-uninfected men, and 9.4% in HIV-1-infected men (adjusted odds ratio, 5.43; 95% CI, 2.03-11.29). Over a median of 1.4 years, anogenital wart incidence among 1104 men was 5.3 (95% CI, 4.3-6.5) per 100 person-years. Having HIV-1 infection at baseline (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.66; 95% CI, 1.01-2.72) or a genital syndrome during follow-up (aHR, 4.78; 95% CI, 3.03-7.56) was associated with increased wart incidence. Wart clearance was lower in HIV-1-infected men (log-rank P<.001). Conclusions. Anogenital wart prevalence and incidence were increased in HIV-1-infected men, and anogenital warts co-occurred with other genital syndromes. Quadrivalent HPV vaccination should be recommended for young men in settings with high HIV-1 prevalence.

Abstract
Objectives To determine the prevalence of HPV and the risky sexual behaviors associated to it in a sample of male college students, taking into account genotype and viral load. Methods From 2002 to 2003, male students from the Autonomous University of Morelos State completed a questionnaire and provided self-collected genital samples to detect and quantify HPV. We performed a bivariate and a multivariate logistic regression analysis to identify correlates associated with the infection and to assess the viral load as a function of the viral infecting type. The fragments of β-globin gene and L1 of HPV, were amplified, purified and cloned, to evaluate viral load. Results Among 253 subjects, HPV prevalence was 19.4%, and HPV16 was the most common subtype. History of STIs (OR = 4.8; 95% CI 1.2–18.9), contraceptive pill use by female partner (OR = 2.6; 95% CI 1.1–6.3) and exchanging sex for money (OR = 4.9; 95% CI 1.2–20) were associated to the HPV infection. HPV16 viral load was 7.8 copies (HPV/beta-globin) compared to 0.9 copies for other HPV types. Discussion HPV16 displayed the highest viral load, and it was the most prevalent. It was found that using contraceptive pills by female partners was associated with HPV infection.
