Abstract
BACKGROUND Antibiotic beads are used to treat local bacterial infections by delivering high drug concentrations to infected tissue. OBJECTIVES This study examined the elution characteristics of metronidazole from metronidazole-calcium sulfate (MCa) and metronidazole-calcium-potassium sulfate (MCaK) beads over 20 days and the antibacterial efficacy of the beads after storage. METHODS The MCa and MCaK beads were prepared by mixing 250 mg of metronidazole and 10 g of calcium sulfate hemihydrate with water and a 3% potassium sulfate solution, respectively. The beads were placed in phosphate-buffered saline for the elution study. The metronidazole eluents were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. The microstructures were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the antimicrobial activity was evaluated by a microbioassay. RESULTS For the 20-day study, the total amount of metronidazole released was greater in the MCa beads than in the MCaK beads by 6.61 ± 0.48 mg (89.11% ± 3.04%) and 4.65 ± 0.36 mg (73.11% ± 4.38%), respectively. The amounts of eluted drugs from the MCa and MCaK beads were higher than the minimum inhibitory concentration at 0.5 µg/mL against anaerobic bacteria at both 20 days and 14 days. SEM showed that calcium crystals on the outer surface had dissolved after elution, and thinner calcium crystals were prominent in the MCaK beads. The MCa and MCaK beads exhibited antibacterial activity after setting, followed by storage at room temperature or 4°C for 21 days. CONCLUSIONS The MCa beads could release more drug than the MCaK beads, but all eluted metronidazole amounts were effective in controlling bacterial infections. Both metronidazole beads could be stored at ambient temperature or in a refrigerator.

Abstract
As warned by Sir Alexander Fleming in his Nobel Prize address: “the use of antimicrobials can, and will, lead to resistance”. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has recently increased due to the overuse and misuse of antibiotics, and their use in animals (food-producing and companion) has also resulted in the selection and transmission of resistant bacteria. The epidemiology of resistance is complex, and factors other than the overall quantity of antibiotics consumed may influence it. Nowadays, AMR has a serious impact on society, both economically and in terms of healthcare. This narrative review aimed to provide a scenario of the state of the AMR phenomenon in veterinary medicine related to the use of antibiotics in different animal species; the impact that it can have on animals, as well as humans and the environment, was considered. Providing some particular instances, the authors tried to explain the vastness of the phenomenon of AMR in veterinary medicine due to many and diverse aspects that cannot always be controlled. The veterinarian is the main reference point here and has a high responsibility towards the human–animal–environment triad. Sharing such a burden with human medicine and cooperating together for the same purpose (fighting and containing AMR) represents an effective example of the application of the One Health approach.

Abstract
Pet bite-related infections are commonly caused by the pet's oral flora transmitted to the animal handlers through the bite wounds. In this study, we isolated a streptococcus, HKU75T, in pure culture from the purulent discharge collected from a guinea pig bite wound in a previously healthy young patient. HKU75T was alpha-hemolytic on sheep blood agar and agglutinated with Lancefield group D and group G antisera. API 20 STREP showed that the most likely identity for HKU75T was S. suis I with 85.4% confidence while Vitek 2 showed that HKU75T was unidentifiable. MALDI-TOF MS identified HKU75T as Streptococcus suis (score of 1.86 only). 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that HKU75T was most closely related to S. parasuis (98.3% nucleotide identity), whereas partial groEL and rpoB gene sequencing showed that it was most closely related to S. suis (81.8% and 89.8% nucleotide identity respectively). Whole genome sequencing and intergenomic distance determined by ANI revealed that there was <85% identity between the genome of HKU75T and those of all other known Streptococcus species. Genome classification using concatenated sequences of 92 bacterial core genes showed that HKU75T belonged to the Suis group. groEL gene sequences identical to that of HKU75T could be directly amplified from the oral cavities of the two guinea pigs owned by the patient. HKU75T is a novel Streptococcus species, which we propose to be named S. oriscaviae. The oral cavity of guinea pigs is presumably a reservoir of S. oriscaviae. Some of the reported S. suis strains isolated from clinical specimens may be S. oriscaviae. IMPORTANCE We reported the discovery of a novel Streptococcus species, propose to be named Streptococcus oriscaviae, from the pus collected from a guinea pig bite wound in a healthy young patient. The bacterium was initially misidentified as S. suis/S. parasuis by biochemical tests, mass spectrometry. and housekeeping genes sequencing. Its novelty was confirmed by whole genome sequencing. Comparative genomic studies showed that S. oriscaviae belongs to the Suis group. S. oriscaviae sequences were detected in the oral cavities of the two guinea pigs owned by the patient, suggesting that the oral cavity of guinea pigs could be a reservoir of S. oriscaviae. Some of the reported S. suis strains may be S. oriscaviae. Further studies are warranted to refine our knowledge on this novel Streptococcus species.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to characterize bacteria of the genus Streptococcus isolated from the oral cavity of the guinea pig as well as to assess the significance of these microorganisms as potential veterinary and human pathogens. Sixty-two streptococcal isolates recovered from 27 clinically healthy guinea pigs were examined genotypically by sequencing the 16S rRNA and groEL genes. Among these isolates, only 13 could be assigned to a species described previously (mainly Streptococcus parasanguinis, S. mitis and S. suis), and the majority of the remaining ones differed considerably from the streptococcal species known to date (16S rRNA and groEL sequence similarities were < 97% and < 87%, respectively). Based on 16S rRNA sequences, these unidentified isolates were divided into seven groups (clades), of which clades I through III comprised most of the isolates examined and had also the widest distribution among guinea pig colonies. Upon groEL gene sequence analysis, however, members of the three clades grouped together without forming such distinct clusters. The remaining clades distinguished by 16S rRNA sequencing could also be discerned by the second gene, and they contained only a few isolates often restricted to one or a few animal colonies. The present work reveals that the guinea pig mouth is inhabited by a vast number of phylogenetically diverse, so far unrecognized populations of streptococci, most of them being apparently host-specific genomospecies. On the contrary, S. parasanguinis and S. mitis are also common human commensals and S. suis is a well-recognized zoonotic pathogen.

Abstract
Reduction of antimicrobial use can result in reduction of resistance in commensal bacteria. In exotic animals, information on use of antimicrobials and resistance in commensals and pathogens is scarce. However, use of antimicrobials listed as critically important antimicrobials for human medicine seems high in exotic animals. Ideally, the selection of a therapy should be based on an accurate diagnosis and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. When prescribing antimicrobials based on empiricism, knowledge of the most common pathogens causing specific infections and the antimicrobial spectrum of antimicrobial agents is indispensable. Implementing antimicrobial stewardship promotes the prudent use of antimicrobials in exotic animals.
