Child involvement in meal preparation and grocery shopping is associated with lower levels of food fussiness among young children

Early life involvement in food skills is associated with children's cooking skills: a longitudinal analysis

Engaging young children in food skills such as food planning and preparation early in life may be an important predictor of later child cooking skills. The aim of this study was to examine whether early life involvement in food skills (mean age at baseline = 3.6 years) is prospectively associated with cooking skills among a sample of 60 children (mean age at follow-up = 10.0 years; 83% White) from the Guelph Family Health Study, an ongoing cohort study examining the effect of a home-based obesity prevention intervention. Early life involvement in food skills, i.e., child involvement in grocery shopping and meal preparation, was reported by parents at baseline. Children self-reported their cooking skills at follow-up. After adjusting for child age, child sex, parent age, household income, and intervention status, early life involvement in food skills was significantly associated with later child cooking skills (β = 0.24, 95% CI (0.02-0.45), p = 0.03). Future studies with larger and more socioeconomically, geographically, and racially diverse samples are needed to confirm these findings.

Understanding family food purchasing behaviour of low-income urban UK families: An analysis of parent capability, opportunity and motivation

OBJECTIVE

Family food purchasing decisions have a direct influence on children's food environments and are powerful predictors of obesity and dietary quality. This study explored parents' capability, opportunities, and motivations regarding food purchasing for their families, as well as barriers and facilitators of healthy food purchasing behaviour, in an ethnically diverse, low-income area.

DESIGN

Semi-structured interviews with parents of under-11-year-old children were conducted to investigate family food purchases, both when eating inside and outside the home. Interviews were analysed using framework analysis mapped against the COM-B model (Michie et al., 2011).

SETTING

An ethnically diverse, low-income area in Birmingham, UK.

PARTICIPANTS

Sixteen parents (13F, 3M) of under-11-year-old children. 75% Pakistani, 12.5% White British, 6.3% White and Black Caribbean, and 6.3% "Other".

RESULTS

Four themes were identified: i) I know how to provide healthy meals for my family, ii) Family food purchase decisions are complex, iii) I want what they are eating and iv) Healthy eating is important but eating outside of the home is a treat. The barriers of healthy family food purchasing were predominantly at family and community levels, including time, cost, and both parents' and children's food enjoyment and preferences. Facilitators of healthy family food purchasing were primarily identified at an individual level, with high levels of capability and motivation for healthy food provision.

CONCLUSIONS

Attempts to enhance parental capability to improve healthy food purchasing through nutrition education is not likely to be a useful intervention target in this group. Emphasis on enjoyment, palatability and value for money could be key to increasing parental motivation to purchase healthy family foods.

Food fussiness is associated with family environmental factors in 1-3-year-old children: A large-scale cross-sectional study

The effects of environmental factors on eating behavior and food intake are not well-known during toddlerhood. This is a cross-sectional study exploring the association between family environmental factors, food fussiness and poorly diversified diet. N = 1679 healthy children aged 1-3 years were recruited by general practitioners and pediatricians. Two validated questionnaires were used: the Children's Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ), which includes a food fussiness (FF) dimension, and the Infant and Child Feeding Index (ICFI) which assesses diet diversification. Factors associated with FF and diet diversification were identified by multivariate logistic regression. Of the 1356 analyzed children, 19.5% were fussy (CEBQ-FF subscore >3). Food fussiness was significantly more common in older children (25.1% of 2-3-year-olds, versus 15.2% of 1-2-year-olds; OR = 1.7) and those conceived with medical assistance (OR = 3.2). Food fussiness was also observed more often in children exposed to distractions during meals (OR = 1.8), rewarded by parents to finish meals (OR = 3.9), free to eat at will (OR = 3.7), or who ate only occasionally with the whole family (OR = 2.0). Unsatisfactory dietary diversification (ICFI≤13.8) was observed in 21.8% of children and was not significantly associated with any variable. No association was found between eating behavior and dietary diversification level. This study showed that food mistrust tends to increase with age in 1-3-year-old children. It highlighted the influence of environmental factors on FF, including family habits during meals. Assisting parents with child food fussiness may help reduce later unhealthy dietary patterns.
