Application of infrared spectroscopy and its theoretical simulation to arsenic adsorption processes

Accurate detection and analysis of arsenic pollutants are an important means to enhance the ability to manage arsenic pollution. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy technology has the advantages of fast analysis speed, high resolution, and high sensitivity and can be monitored by real-time in situ analysis. This paper reviews the application of IR spectroscopy in the qualitative and quantitative analysis of inorganic and organic arsenic acid adsorbed by major minerals such as ferrihydrite (FH), hematite, goethite, and titanium dioxide. The IR spectroscopy technique cannot only identify different arsenic contaminants but also obtain the content and adsorption rate of arsenic contaminants in the solid phase. The reaction equilibrium constants and the degree of reaction conversion can be determined by constructing adsorption isotherms or combining them with modeling techniques. Theoretical calculations of IR spectra of mineral adsorbed arsenic pollutant systems based on density functional theory (DFT) and analysis and comparison of the measured and theoretically calculated characteristic peaks of IR spectra can reveal the microscopic mechanism and surface chemical morphology of the arsenic adsorption process. This paper systematically summarizes the qualitative and quantitative studies and theoretical calculations of IR spectroscopy in inorganic and organic arsenic pollutant adsorption systems, which provides new insights for accurate detection and analysis of arsenic pollutants and arsenic pollution control. PRACTITIONER POINTS: This paper reviews the application of infrared spectroscopy in the qualitative and quantitative analyses of inorganic and organic arsenic acid adsorbed by major minerals such as ferrihydrite, hematite, goethite, and titanium dioxide, which can help identify and evaluate the type and concentration of arsenic pollutants in water bodies. In this paper, theoretical calculations of infrared spectra of mineral adsorbed arsenic pollutant systems based on density functional theory reveal the adsorption mechanism of arsenic pollutants in water at the solid-liquid interface and help to develop targeted arsenic pollution control technologies. This paper provides a new and reliable analytical detection technique for the study of arsenic contaminants in water bodies.

Solution NMR methods for structural and thermodynamic investigation of nanoparticle adsorption equilibria

Characterization of dynamic processes occurring at the nanoparticle (NP) surface is crucial for developing new and more efficient NP catalysts and materials. Thus, a vast amount of research has been dedicated to developing techniques to characterize sorption equilibria. Over recent years, solution NMR spectroscopy has emerged as a preferred tool for investigating ligand-NP interactions. Indeed, due to its ability to probe exchange dynamics over a wide range of timescales with atomic resolution, solution NMR can provide structural, kinetic, and thermodynamic information on sorption equilibria involving multiple adsorbed species and intermediate states. In this contribution, we review solution NMR methods for characterizing ligand-NP interactions, and provide examples of practical applications using these methods as standalone techniques. In addition, we illustrate how the integrated analysis of several NMR datasets was employed to elucidate the role played by support-substrate interactions in mediating the phenol hydrogenation reaction catalyzed by ceria-supported Pd nanoparticles.

In Situ and Real-Time ATR-FTIR Temperature-Dependent Adsorption Kinetics Coupled with DFT Calculations of Dimethylarsinate and Arsenate on Hematite Nanoparticles

Temperature-dependent kinetic studies of the adsorption of critical pollutants onto reactive components in soils and removal technologies provide invaluable rate information and mechanistic insight. Using attenuated total internal reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, we collected in situ spectra as a function of time, concentration, and temperature in the range of 5-50 °C (278-323 K) for the adsorption of arsenate (iAs) and dimethylarsinate (DMA) on hematite nanoparticles at pH 7. These experimental data were modeled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the energy barriers between surface complexes. The Langmuir adsorption kinetic model was used to extract values of the fast (<5 min) and slow (6-10 min) observed adsorption rate, initial rate constants of adsorption and desorption, Arrhenius parameters, effective activation energies (ΔE_a), and pre-exponential factors (A). The trend in the kinetic parameters correlated with the type of surface complexes that iAs and DMA form, which are mostly bidentate binuclear compared to a mix of outer sphere and monodentate, respectively. The observed initial adsorption rates were found to be more sensitive to changes in the aqueous concentration of the arsenicals than slow rates. On average, iAs adsorbs 2.5× faster and desorbs 4× slower than dimethylarsinate (DMA). The ΔE_a and A values for the adsorption of iAs bidentate complexes are statistically higher than those extracted for outer-sphere DMA by a factor of 3. The DFT results on adsorption energies and ΔE_a barriers are consistent with the experimental data and provide a mechanistic explanation for the low ΔE_a values observed. The presence of defect sites with under-coordinated Fe atoms or exchangeable surface water (i.e., Fe-OH₂ groups) lowers activation barriers of adsorption. These results suggest that increasing organic substitutions on arsenate at the expense of As-O bonds decreases the effective energy barrier for complex formation and lowers the number of collisional orientations that result in binding to the hematite surface.
