Phenothiazine cyclic hexamers: synthesis, properties, and complexation behavior with C60

Phenothiazine cyclic hexamers linked at the 3,7-positions were synthesized. Effects of the cyclic structure as well as substituent effects of the nitrogen atom were disclosed. Furthermore, the cyclic hexamer encapsulated C60 inside the ring in a 1 : 1 ratio giving a Saturn-type complex in solution. The structure and interactions were discussed based on DFT calculations.

Structures and Supramolecular Properties of Inclusion Complexes of Anthracene-Triptycene Nanocages with Fullerene Guests and Their Dynamic Motion as Molecular Gyroscopes

Three derivatives of macrocyclic cage compounds consisting of diarylanthracene and triptycene units were synthesized. These nanocages formed host-guest complexes with C₆₀ and other fullerene guests as confirmed by ¹ H NMR and fluorescence spectroscopy. The association constant of the mesityl and 2,4,6-tributoxyphenyl derivatives with C₆₀ was determined to be 2.2 × 10⁴  L mol^-1 , which was larger than that of the pentafluorophenyl derivative. Direct experimental evidence of the complexation was obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis: the guest C₆₀ molecule was included in the cavity via multipoint CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions. Dynamic disorders of the included C₆₀ molecule in variable-temperature X-ray analysis indicated uniaxial motion, such as gyroscopic motion. The unique dynamic behavior of the spherical C₆₀ rotor anchored by the cage stator via CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions in the crystal, as well as substituent effects on the association properties, are discussed with the aid of DFT calculations.

Complexation of an Anthracene-Triptycene Nanocage Host with Fullerene Guests through CH⋅⋅⋅π Contacts

A bicyclic anthracene macrocycle containing two triptycene units at the bridgehead positions was synthesized by Ni-mediated coupling of the corresponding precursor as a cage-shaped aromatic hydrocarbon host. This cage host formed an inclusion complex with C₆₀ or C₇₀ guest in 1 : 1 ratio in solution. The association constants (K_a ) determined by the fluorescence titration method were 1.3×10⁴ and 3.3×10⁵  L mol ^-1 for the C₆₀ and C₇₀ complexes, respectively, at 298 K in toluene. DFT calculations revealed that the guest molecules were included in the middle of the cavity with several CH⋅⋅⋅π contacts. The strong affinity of the cage host for the fullerene guests and the high selectivity toward C₇₀ are discussed on the basis of spectroscopic and structural data.

Photoinduced electron transfer in nano-Saturn complexes of fullerene

The photoinduced electron transfer is studied computationally in several Saturn-shaped inclusion complexes of carbo-aromatic rings and C60 fullerene - C72⊃C60, C96⊃C60, C120⊃C60, and C168⊃C60. Analysis of their structural and electronic properties shows that the charge separation process is efficient in C120⊃C60 and C168⊃C60 where the host molecule resembles the conjugated [24]circulene unit. In contrast, the electron transfer is not feasible in the complexes of the oligophenylene-based rings C72⊃C60 and C96⊃C60.

Reduction of Ethynylenes to Vinylenes in a Macrocyclic π-Extended Thiophene Skeleton Under McMurry Coupling Conditions

McMurry coupling is one of the most useful and convenient tools for the preparation of π-conjugated molecules. However, for the synthesis of strained macrocycles containing ethynylene linkages, reduction of ethynylene to vinylene linkage sometimes took place. Especially, for the synthesis of macrocyclic π-extended thiophene hexamers using McMurry coupling of dialdehyde 1 composed of three thienylene, two ethynylene, and two formyl groups, reduction of ethynylenes to vinylenes often takes place to produce unique products in a one-pot procedure, depending on very small steric and electronic effects such as reaction temperature, amounts of titanium reagent, and substituents of thiophene hexamers. The attractive structures and functional properties of reduced thiophene hexamers have been determined using X-ray analysis and OFET measurements.

Constitutionally Isomeric Aromatic Tripeptides: Self-Assembly and Metal-Ion-Modulated Transformations

Self-assembling peptides based on aromatic amino acids can adopt diverse nanostructures which primarily depend on their molecular structures. Therefore, to understand the nature of self-assembly on the molecular level we rationally designed two constitutional isomers of short aromatic peptides. The first isomer consists of a tyrosine moiety at the N-terminus and the second isomer consists of a tyrosine moiety at the C-terminus of the FF peptide, a core recognition motif of Amyloid β peptides. Therefore, it can be considered that both the designed tripeptides are the analogues of the FFF peptide with only atomic(-H) level replacement by -OH functional group on the first and last phenyl ring, respectively. The first isomer self-assembled into 2D porous nanosheets ("Nanowebs"), however the second isomers produced toroidal shapes with central spheres ("Nano-Saturn" like assemblies). Interestingly, the presence of the transition-metal ions (copper, zinc and iron) triggered the self-assembly of both the peptides into fibrous circular discs, nanomats and nanoplates like assembly.

Coordination disk-type nano-Saturn complexes

The first coordination disk-type nano-Saturn complexes, [Cu10(Mim)10]⊃C60 and [Cu10(Mim)10]⊃C70 (Mim = 2-methylimidazolate), were assembled under one-pot solvothermal conditions. The highest number of 30 C-Hπ interactions between the [Cu10(Mim)10] disk and the C60/C70 surfaces drives the formation of the nano-Saturns. The calculated interaction energy is much larger than that of most of the reported disk-type nano-Saturns. Different photoinduced charge/energy transfer mechanisms are present for both nano-Saturn systems to quench the intrinsic luminescence of the [Cu10(Mim)10] disk.

Small Structural Changes in the Alkyl Substituents of Macrocyclic π-Extended Thiophene Oligomers Causes a Key Effect on Their Stacking and Functional Properties

Three new macrocyclic π-extended thiophene hexamers composed of four thienylene-ethynylene and two thienylene-vinylene units with or without four alkyl substituents have been synthesized. Despite similar shape-persistent structures in solution, the alkyl substituents control the solid-state structures and morphologies. The unsubstituted hexamer exhibited a planar conformation with a theoretically predicted structure in the solid state; however, the planar hexamer with four ethyl substituents formed a closely stacked columnar crystal structure to exhibit π-π interactions. Interestingly, the hexamer with four butyl substituents adopted both planar and twisted conformations in the solid state, exhibiting polymorphism based on induced-fit stacking of molecules. Thus, the butyl-substituted hexamer produces a mixture of yellow, orange, and red single crystals from toluene/acetone, and X-ray analysis revealed six different conformations. Consequently, the small structural difference in the macrocycles causes a key effect on their functional properties in the solid state, and their morphology governs electrical conductivity and organic field-effect-transistor activity. The polymorphism of the hexamers was applied to the switching of film morphology.

A Saturn-Like Complex Composed of Macrocyclic Oligothiophene and C60 Fullerene: Structure, Stability, and Photophysical Properties in Solution and the Solid State

A Saturn-like 1:1 complex composed of macrocyclic oligothiophene E-8T7A and C₆₀ fullerene (C₆₀ ) was synthesized to investigate the interaction between macrocyclic oligothiophenes and C₆₀ in solution and the solid state. Because the Saturn-like 1:1 complex E-8T7A⋅C₆₀ is mainly stabilized by van der Waals interactions between C₆₀ and the sulfur atoms of the E-8T7A macrocycle, C₆₀ is rather weakly incorporated inside the macro-ring in solution. However, in the solid state the Saturn-like 1:1 complex preferentially formed single crystals or nanostructured polymorphs. Interestingly, X-ray analysis and theoretical calculations exhibited hindered rotation of C₆₀ in the Saturn-like complex due to interactions between C₆₀ and the sulfur atoms. Furthermore, the photoinduced charge transfer (CT) interaction between E-8T7A and C₆₀ in solution was investigated by using femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. The ultrafast TA spectral changes in the photoinduced absorption bands were attributed to the CT process in the Saturn-like structure.
