Increased precipitation accelerates soil organic matter turnover associated with microbial community composition in topsoil of alpine grassland on the eastern Tibetan Plateau

Soil organic matter dynamics and stability: Climate vs. time

Climate and time are among the most important factors driving soil organic carbon (SOC) stability and accrual in mineral soils; however, their relative importance on SOC dynamics is still unclear. Therefore, understanding how these factors covary over a range of soil developmental stages is crucial to improve our knowledge of climate change impact on SOC accumulation and persistence. Two chronosequences located along a climate gradient were investigated to determine the main interactions among time (age) and climate (precipitation and temperature) on SOC stability and stock with depth. Considering a common depth (0-15 or 0-30 cm), in the drier chronosequence, the older soil showed the highest SOC stock, while the younger exhibited the lowest carbon accumulation. Considering the whole profile, the SOC stock increased with age. In the wetter chronosequence, the younger soil showed the highest SOC stock considering a common depth, whereas, when the entire profile is taken into account, the older one accumulated 2-3 times more SOC than the others. In both chronosequences, significant stocks of SOC (∼42 %) were accumulated below 30 cm. Soil organic matter stability, assessed by thermal analysis and heterotrophic respiration, increases with depth and age only in the drier chronosequence. Soils from the wetter chronosequence were instead characterized by a greater quantity of labile and/or not-stabilized SOC; here, the amorphous Fe/Al-rich secondary mineral weathering products showed an essential predictor function of SOC storage, although they do not seem to be involved in SOC stabilization mechanisms. Otherwise, the interaction of SOC with fine particles, short-range order minerals, and organo-metal complexes represent the significant stabilization mechanisms in soils from drier climate. The results highlighted how the age factor plays an unassuming role in geochemical processes influencing SOC dynamics; however, climate determines different trajectories of soil development and SOC dynamics for a given soil age. Thus, soil age shows a key role in SOC stabilization especially in drier climatic conditions, while wetter conditions determine an accumulation of a higher yet more labile amount of SOC.

Effect of moderate livestock grazing on soil and vegetation characteristics in zokor mounds of different ages

Mounds formed by plateau zokors (Eospalax baileyi) in alpine meadows are easily disturbed by livestock. We aimed to reveal the effect of moderate livestock grazing (from October 15 to March 15 of the following year) on plant and soil characteristics of zokor mounds. This study explored the effect of zokor mounds of different ages (2015-2018) on soil nutrient content, soil enzymatic activity, plant diversity, and aboveground biomass (AGB) at grazing and non-grazing sites. Compared with the non-grazing sites, soil organic carbon (SOC), total soil phosphorus, and ratio of SOC to total nitrogen were 16.6%-98.7% higher and soil urease activity was 8.4% and 9.6% higher in 1- and 3-year-old mounds, respectively, at the grazing sites. Grazing significantly increased the plant Pielou index, richness, and Shannon-Wiener diversity index of 4-year-old mounds by 20.7%-52.4%. Partial least squares path modeling showed that plant species diversity was the main factor affecting the plant AGB of mounds at the grazing sites, whereas soil enzyme activity was the primary factor at the non-grazing sites. We propose that moderate grazing increases soil nutrient content and the plant diversity in zokor mounds in alpine meadows, which should be considered in future grassland restoration.

Divergent responses of cropland soil organic carbon to warming across the Sichuan Basin of China

Cropland soils are considered to have the potential to sequester carbon (C). Warming can increase soil organic C (SOC) by enhancing primary production, but it can also cause carbon release from soils. However, the role of warming in governing cropland SOC dynamics over broad geographic scales remains poorly understood. Using over 4000 soil samples collected in the 1980s and 2010s across the Sichuan Basin of China, this study assessed the warming-induced cropland SOC change and the correlations with precipitation, cropland type and soil type. Results showed mean SOC content increased from 11.10 to 13.85 g C kg^-1. Larger SOC increments were observed under drier conditions (precipitation < 1050 mm, dryland and paddy-dryland rotation cropland), which were 1.67-2.23 times higher than under wetter conditions (precipitation > 1050 mm and paddy fields). Despite the significant associations of SOC increment with crop productivity, precipitation, fertilization, cropland type and soil type, warming also acted as one of major contributors to cropland SOC change. The SOC increment changed parabolically with the rise in temperature increase rate under relatively drier conditions, while temperature increase had no impact on cropland SOC increment under wetter conditions. Meanwhile, the patterns of the parabolical relationship varied with soil types in drylands, where the threshold of temperature increase rate, the point at which the SOC increment switched from increasing to decreasing with warming, was lower for clayey soils (Ali-Perudic Argosols) than for sandy soils (Purpli-Udic Cambosols). These results illustrate divergent responses of cropland SOC to warming under different environments, which were contingent on water conditions and soil types. Our findings emphasize the importance of formulating appropriate field water management for sustainable C sequestration and the necessity of incorporating environment-specific mechanisms in Earth system models for better understanding of the soil C-climate feedback in complex environments.

Soil carbon persistence governed by plant input and mineral protection at regional and global scales

Elucidating the processes underlying the persistence of soil organic matter (SOM) is a prerequisite for projecting soil carbon feedback to climate change. However, the potential role of plant carbon input in regulating the multi-layer SOM preservation over broad geographic scales remains unclear. Based on large-scale soil radiocarbon (∆¹⁴ C) measurements on the Tibetan Plateau, we found that plant carbon input was the major contributor to topsoil carbon destabilisation despite the significant associations of topsoil ∆¹⁴ C with climatic and mineral variables as well as SOM chemical composition. By contrast, mineral protection by iron-aluminium oxides and cations became more important in preserving SOM in deep soils. These regional observations were confirmed by a global synthesis derived from the International Soil Radiocarbon Database (ISRaD). Our findings illustrate different effects of plant carbon input on SOM persistence across soil layers, providing new insights for models to better predict multi-layer soil carbon dynamics under changing environments.

Organic amendments exacerbate the effects of silver nanoparticles on microbial biomass and community composition of a semiarid soil

Increased utilization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can result in an accumulation of these particles in the environment. The potential detrimental effects of AgNPs in soil may be associated with the low fertility of soils in semiarid regions that are usually subjected to restoration through the application of organic amendments. Microbial communities are responsible for fundamental processes related to soil fertility, yet the potential impacts of low and realistic AgNPs concentrations on soil microorganisms are still unknown. We studied the effects of realistic citrate-stabilized AgNPs concentrations (0.015 and 1.5 μg kg^-1) at two exposure times (7 and 30 days) on a sandy clay loam Mediterranean soil unamended (SU) and amended with compost (SA). We assessed soil microbial biomass (microbial fatty acids), soil enzyme activities (urease, β-glucosidase, and alkaline phosphatase), and composition of the microbial community (bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungal ITS2 sequencing) in a microcosm experiment. In the SA, the two concentrations of AgNPs significantly decreased the bacterial biomass after 7 days of incubation. At 30 days of incubation, only a significant decrease in the Gram+ was observed at the highest AgNPs concentration. In contrast, in the SU, there was a significant increase in bacterial biomass after 30 days of incubation at the lowest AgNPs concentration. Overall, we found that fungal biomass was more resistant to AgNPs than bacterial biomass, in both SA and SU. Further, the AgNPs changed the composition of the soil bacterial community in SA, the relative abundance of some bacterial taxa in SA and SU, and fungal richness in SU at 30 days of incubation. However, AgNPs did not affect the activity of extracellular enzymes. This study demonstrates that the exposure time and organic amendments modulate the effects of realistic concentrations of AgNPs in the biomass and composition of the microbial community of a Mediterranean soil.
