Rapid development of mature vocal patterns of ultrasonic calls in a fast-growing rodent, the yellow steppe lemming (Eolagurus luteus)

Ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) of laboratory rodents may serve as age-dependent indicators of emotional arousal and anxiety. Fast-growing Arvicolinae rodent species might be advantageous wild-type animal models for behavioural and medical research related to USV ontogeny. For the yellow steppe lemming Eolagurus luteus, only audible calls of adults were previously described. This study provides categorization and spectrographic analyses of 1176 USV calls emitted by 120 individual yellow steppe lemmings at 12 age classes, from birth to breeding adults over 90 days (d) of age, 10 individuals per age class, up to 10 USV calls per individual. The USV calls emerged since 1st day of pup life and occurred at all 12 age classes and in both sexes. The unified 2-min isolation procedure on an unfamiliar territory was equally applicable for inducing USV calls at all age classes. Rapid physical growth (1 g body weight gain per day from birth to 40 d of age) and the early (9-12 d) eyes opening correlated with the early (9-12 d) emergence of mature vocal patterns of USV calls. The mature vocal patterns included a prominent shift in percentages of chevron and upward contours of fundamental frequency (f0) and the changes in the acoustic variables of USV calls. Call duration was the longest at 1-4 d, significantly shorter at 9-12 d and did not between 9-12-d and older age classes. The maximum fundamental frequency (f0max) decreased with increase of age class, from about 50 kHz in neonates to about 40 kHz in adults. These ontogenetic pathways of USV duration and f0max (towards shorter and lower-frequency USV calls) were reminiscent of those in laboratory mice Mus musculus.

Fathers and sons: Physiological stress in male Zaisan mole voles, Ellobius tancrei

The social environment can be stressful for at least some group members, resulting in elevated levels of glucocorticoid stress hormones (GC). Patterns of the relationships between social rank and GC levels vary between species. In carnivores, primates and birds that live in permanent cooperative groups, helpers do not usually display physiological indicators of stress. Very little is known about status-related GC differences within cooperative groups of rodents. In this laboratory study, we compared GC concentrations in dominant (fathers) and subordinate (natal sons) males of a cooperative subterranean vole, Ellobius tancrei. The assessment of adrenocortical activity by measuring urine glucocorticoid metabolites (UGM) was previously validated for this species through an ACTH challenge test. We observed clear peaks of UGM in the second or third urine samples taken after the administration of ACTH (lag time equal to 2.5-3 h). Thus, UGM is suitable to estimate physiological stress in Ellobius. Postpubertal sons living in natal groups had significantly higher UGM concentrations than their fathers. The average UGM levels of sons were positively associated with their ages and paternal body masses, and negatively associated with paternal ages. Hence, son-father interactions rather than just younger ages of sons appear to contribute to GC differences. The revealed pattern was not consistent with that reported for most cooperative species from other taxa, highlighting the importance of comparative studies.

Reproduction, ageing, and longevity in two species of laboratory rodents with different life histories

Social subterranean rodents of the Bathyergidae family are known to have extended longevity and some signs of negligible senescence, although the manifestation of these traits depends on the reproductive status of individuals. Such enormous life history peculiarities are usually explained by the specificity of a subterranean way of life. If so, all subterranean rodents, regardless of their taxonomic position, are expected to have higher maximum lifespans and shorter senescence periods than the related above-ground species. In this study we compared the mortality rates and age-related reproductive activity and physical conditions in two sympatric rodents of the Cricetidae family: subterranean mole voles and above-ground dwarf hamsters. Mole voles have a maximum lifespan that is as high as two times the maximum lifespan of the dwarf hamsters; however, only a few mole voles outlasted the maximum lifespan of dwarf hamsters. Dwarf hamsters were generally more fecund than mole voles, which manifests both in a higher number of litters and larger litter sizes. Neither species demonstrated a significant age-related decline in litter size or muscle strength, although there were negative trends for dwarf hamsters. We conclude that some evidence of extended longevity and slow ageing do occur in mole voles, but due to the relatively short "subterranean" phylogenetic history of the species, this evidence is not as pronounced as in the social species of Bathyergidae family.
