New gene-enzyme system in Anopheles atroparvus: occurrence and frequencies of four alleles at the EST6 locus

Distribution of dopa-oxidase isozymes among mosquito vectors of viral encephalitis

Distribution of DOPA-oxidase isozymes in larval Culex pipiens pipiens, Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus and their hybrids was determined by agarose gel electrophoresis. Three zones of enzyme activity were detected in the subspecific and hybrid populations. Zone I was cathodic whereas Zones II and III were anodic. Electrophoretic variability was evident only in Zone II which was dimorphic for enzyme activity. Zones I and III were monomorphic. The subspecific and hybrid populations were distinguishable from one another only in Zone II. In all three populations, melanization was most intense in Zone II, less in Zone I, and least in Zone III.

Electrophoretic variability in the phosphatase system of the yellow-fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti

Alkaline and acid phosphatases in five inbred strains of the yellow-fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, were compared by vertical polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. 1. Polymorphic and monomorphic zones of enzyme activity were observed among both alkaline and acid phosphatases. 2. In the alkaline phosphatase system, seven electrophoretic zones of enzyme activity were detected; all but two of the seven zones showed electrophoretic variability. 3. In the acid phosphatase system, four electrophoretic zones of enzyme activity were detected; all but one of the four zones showed electrophoretic variability. 4. Absence of enzyme activity was observed in some zones and strains among both alkaline and acid phosphatases.

Amylase isozymes in the mosquito, Culex tritaeniorhynchus

A survey of laboratory stocks of Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles has uncovered the presence of four electrophoretic variants and one apparent null allele of amylase. Linkage experiments with heterozygous males indicate that amylase is sex-linked. The gene sequence is w (white eye) - Amy (amylase) - M (sex), and the recombination frequencies are: w - Amy = 6.02%, Amy - M = 1.35% and w - M = 7.37%.

ESTERASE POLYMORPHISM IN A NATURAL POPULATION OFANOPHELES PUNCTIPENNIS. II. ANALYSIS OF THEEST-CSYSTEM

A series of reddish staining bands (acrylamide gel electrophoresis) has been designated the Est-C system in Anopheles punctipennis. These bands, specific for beta substrate and therefore easily recognized, are the phenotypic expressions of three alleles Est-CF, Est-CI, and Est-CSat a single autosomal locus. Analysis of a natural population (140 individuals) indicates that homozygotes have a higher frequency and heterozygotes a lower frequency than expected on a Hardy-Weinberg basis. This locus should be an excellent autosomal marker.
