Manifesto for the routine use of NMR for the liquid product analysis of aqueous CO2 reduction: from comprehensive chemical shift data to formaldehyde quantification in water

CO2 reduction research is at a critical turnaround since it has the potential to partially or even substantially fulfil future clean energy needs. CO2-to-CO electrochemical conversion is getting closer from industrial implementation requirements. Efforts are now more and more directed to obtain highly reduced products such as methanol, methane, ethylene, ethanol, etc., most of them being liquids. Gas-phase products (e.g., CO, CH4) are typically detected and quantified by well-defined gas chromatography (GC and GC/MS) protocols. On the other hand, NMR, GC-MS, HPLC have been used for the liquid phase characterization, but no routine technique has yet been established, mainly due to lack of versatility of a single technique. Additionally, except NMR and GC-MS, classical techniques cannot distinguish 13C from 12C products, although it is a mandatory step to assess products origin. Herein, we show the efficiency and applicability of 1H NMR as routine technique for liquid phase products analysis and we address two previous shortcomings. We first established a comprehensive 1H and 13C NMR chemical shifts list for all 12CO2 and 13CO2 reduction products in water ranging from C1 to C3. Then we overcame the difficulty of identifying aqueous formaldehyde intermediate by 1H NMR through an efficient chemical trapping step, along with isotopic signature study. Formaldehyde can be reliably quantified in water with a concentration as low as 50 μM.

Synthesis, Structural Characterization and Ligand-Enhanced Photo-Induced Color-Changing Behavior of Two Hydrogen-Bonded Ho(III)-Squarate Supramolecular Compounds

Two coordination polymers (CPs) with chemical formulas, [Ho₂(C₄O₄)₂(C₂O₄)(H₂O)₈]·4H₂O (1) and [Ho(C₄O₄)_1.5(H₂O)₃] (2), (C₄O₄^2- = dianion of squaric acid, C₂O₄^2- = oxalate), have been synthesized and their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffractometer (XRD). In compound 1, the coordination environment of Ho(III) ion is eight-coordinate bonded to eight oxygen atoms from two squarate, one oxalate ligands and four water molecules. The squarates and oxalates both act as bridging ligands with _1,2-bis-monodentate and bis-chelating coordination modes, respectively, connecting the Ho(III) ions to form a one-dimensional (1D) ladder-like framework. Adjacent ladders are interlinked via O-HO hydrogen bonding interaction to form a hydrogen-bonded two-dimensional (2D) layered framework and then arranged orderly in an AAA manner to construct its three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular architecture. In compound 2, the coordination geometry of Ho(III) is square-antiprismatic eight coordinate bonded to eight oxygen atoms from five squarate ligands and three water molecules. The squarates act as bridging ligands with two coordination modes, _1,2,3-trismonodentate and _1,2-bis-monodentate, connecting the Ho(III) ions to form a 2D bi-layered framework. Adjacent 2D frameworks are then parallel stacked in an AAA manner to construct its 3D supramolecular architecture. Hydrogen bonding interactions between the squarate ligands and coordinated water molecules in 1 and 2 both play important roles on the construction of their 3D supramolecular assembly. Compounds 1 and 2 both show remarkable ligand-enhanced photo-induced color-changing behavior, with their pink crystals immediately turning to yellow crystals under UV light illumination.

Tetrahydroxy-p-benzoquinone as a Source of Polydentate O-Donor Ligands. Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Magnetic Properties of the [Cu(bpy)(dhmal)]2 Dimer and the Two-Dimensional [{SiW12O40}{Cu2(bpy)2(H2O)(ox)}2]·16H2O Inorganic−Metalorganic Hybrid

The use of tetrahydroxy-p-benzoquinone as a slow source of dihydroxymalonato and oxalato ligands led to the isolation under open-air mild reaction conditions of five different compounds, two of them prepared for the first time: [Cu(bpy)(dhmal)]2 (1) and [{SiW12O40}{Cu2(bpy)2(H2O)(ox)}2].16H2O (5) (bpy, 2,2'-bipyridine; dhmal, dihydroxymalonate; ox, oxalate). A possible mechanism for the oxidation of the benzoquinone to give the croconate dianion, which undergoes further ring-opening oxidation to decompose into dihydroxymalonate and oxalate, is proposed. All compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetry, infrared spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance, and magnetic susceptibility measurements have been performed for compounds 1 and 5. A complete band assignment of the experimental FT-IR spectra is given through comparison with the ones calculated using density functional theory (DFT). The neutral dimer 1 constitutes the first structurally characterized example of a transition metal-dhmal complex, and it contains two copper atoms bridged by two dihydroxymalonato ligands acting in a mu2-kappa3O,O',O":kappa1O coordination fashion, so that an equatorial-axial Cu2(mu2-O)2 rhomboid core is formed. On the other hand, the inorganic-metalorganic hybrid compound 5 shows a two-dimensional arrangement of Keggin polyanions linked by one of the Cu atoms of the oxalate cationic dimers to give layers parallel to the (10) plane, the remaining ox-Cu-bpy fragments acting as interlamellar separators. In both cases, magnetic and EPR results are discussed with respect to the crystal structure of the compounds and, for compound 1, also with respect to DFT calculations of the exchange coupling constant.
