Please come again: attractive bait augments recapture rates of capture-naïve snowshoe hares

Abstract ContextCapture–recapture sampling is one of the most commonly used methods for monitoring population demographics and is needed in a wide variety of studies where repeat sampling of individuals is desired. Although studies employing capture–recapture methods often assume unbiased sampling, it is well established that inherent capture biases can occur with these methods, including those related to baits. Reducing sources of sampling bias and augmenting recapture reliability is necessary for capture-dependent studies. However, few studies have examined the efficacy of baits on individuals with variable capture experience. AimsTo investigate the use of an attractant-augmented bait in enhancing capture–recapture probabilities for snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus). MethodsTo examine the efficacy of different attractant-augmented bait types, a variety of baits were created, with bait preference tested on a captive hare. Because a strawberry jam-based bait was preferentially consumed (in comparison with other tested baits), the effectiveness of this attractant in enhancing capture–recapture rates was subsequently examined in wild hares, using paired live-trapping field trials (n=6 trials). ResultsLive-trapping trials showed that although overall hare capture rates were not affected by the use of a jam-based bait, recaptures were 33.1% higher in capture-naïve individuals exposed to our attractant. This was not the case for hares with prior capture experience; such hares had an equal likelihood of being recaptured regardless of the bait type used. ConclusionsThe tested attractant improved recapture rates of capture-naïve hares. ImplicationsStudies relying on high recapture rates should use methods that maximise recapture rates wherever possible, including the use of baits that may augment recaptures in capture-naïve animals.

Managing Genetic Diversity and Extinction Risk for a Rare Plains Bison (Bison bison bison) Population

Unfenced plains bison are rare and only occur in a small number of locations throughout Canada and the United States. We examined management guidelines for maintenance of genetic health and population persistence for a small and isolated population of plains bison that occupy the interface between a protected national park and private agricultural lands. To address genetic health concerns, we measured genetic diversity relative to other populations and assessed the potential effects of genetic augmentation. We then used individual-based population viability analyses (PVA) to determine the minimum abundance likely to prevent genetic diversity declines. We assessed this minimum relative to a proposed maximum social carrying capacity related to bison use of human agricultural lands. We also used the PVA to assess the probability of population persistence given the limiting factors of predation, hunting, and disease. Our results indicate that genetic augmentation will likely be required to achieve genetic diversity similar to that of other plains bison populations. We also found that a minimum population of 420 bison yields low probability of additional genetic loss while staying within society-based maxima. Population estimates based on aerial surveys indicated that the population has been below this minimum since 2007. Our PVA simulations indicate that current hunting practices will result in undesirable levels of population extinction risk and further declines in genetic variability. Our study demonstrates that PVA can be used to evaluate potential management scenarios as they relate to long-term genetic conservation and population persistence for rare species.

Capturing Neonatal Bison With a Net Gun From a Utility Terrain Vehicle

Monitoring neonatal bison Bison bison for daily survival is difficult without a proper technique to effectively capture and safely handle neonates. Currently, we are not aware of an effective method to capture neonatal bison. In May 2015, we initiated a study on Olson's Bison Conservation Ranches, Pine River, Manitoba, Canada, to evaluate a new approach to effectively capture and handle neonate bison. We captured bison neonates by using a modified .308 caliber net gun deployed from a utility terrain vehicle. We successfully captured and radio-tagged 10 male and 16 female neonate bison in 37 attempts (70.3% success). Over a period of 4 d, 16.0 labor h were spent pursuing and handling neonates, with an average capture rate of one bison neonate for every 0.6 labor h. Average handling time of bison neonates was 3.7 ± 1.6 min and ranged from 1.0 to 7.5 min. Results of our study indicate that our approach was effective and efficient for capturing and handling bison neonates safely. No injuries or capture related mortalities were observed throughout the handling and monitoring period. This technique will allow biologists and herd managers to capture neonates, monitor their survival, and collect cause-specific data on mortality of neonates in managed bison populations.

Decoupling of component and ensemble density feedbacks in birds and mammals

A component density feedback represents the effect of change in population size on single demographic rates, whereas an ensemble density feedback captures that effect on the overall growth rate of a population. Given that a population's growth rate is a synthesis of the interplay of all demographic rates operating in a population, we test the hypothesis that the strength of ensemble density feedback must augment with increasing strength of component density feedback, using long-term censuses of population size, fertility, and survival rates of 109 bird and mammal populations (97 species). We found that compensatory and depensatory component feedbacks were common (each detected in approximately 50% of the demographic rates). However, component feedback strength only explained <10% of the variation in ensemble feedback strength. To explain why, we illustrate the different sources of decoupling between component and ensemble feedbacks. We argue that the management of anthropogenic impacts on populations using component feedbacks alone is ill-advised, just as managing on the basis of ensemble feedbacks without a mechanistic understanding of the contributions made by its components and environmental variability can lead to suboptimal decisions.
