Abstract
The Corynorhinus mexicanus bat is characterized by a specific form of reproductive asynchrony between males and females. After mating, some sperm remain in the male's epididymis, the organ where the sperm had matured. It has not yet been determined if apoptotic markers participate in the process of the maturation and/or elimination of these cells, so studying this topic is essential for our understanding of this species. Male bats were collected during three stages: Before mating; during the Mating phase; After mating and the final phase, which we call, Storage. Their epididymides were removed, weighed and measured. Sperm were extracted and the following sperm parameters were evaluated: active caspases, phosphatidylserine externalization, and mitochondrial membrane potential. Sperm from the testes enter the epididymis during Before mating, causing the organ to grow. During Mating phase, spermatozoa present a large amount of active caspases with externalization of phosphatidyl serine, even while still alive. This suggests that these two markers could participate in maturation and elimination, respectively.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal related to a decrease in sperm parameters. The transit of spermatozoa through the epididymis is necessary to generate changes in the sperm membrane, such as the assembly of various carbohydrates that are added to the spermatazoan's surface to prepare it for successful fertilisation of the oocyte. No studies have yet analysed whether Cd alters the presence and distribution of these carbohydrates. We aimed to evaluate the changes induced by Cd in the distribution pattern of N-acetylglucosamine, sialic acid, mannose and fucose on the sperm membrane in the epididymis (e.g. caput, corpus, cauda) and if it alters the epididymal epithelium. Male Wistar pups were treated with Cd doses (0.125, 0.25 and 0.5mg/kg) on postnatal days 1-49. At postnatal day 90, they were humanely killed, sperm samples were obtained from the epididymis and tissue samples were taken for histological analysis. Cd concentrations in the blood and epididymis increased in proportion to the dose administered and decreased the serum testosterone levels and sperm quality. Histological analysis revealed alterations in the epithelium in all Cd-treated groups. Cd altered the distribution patterns of carbohydrates and fluorescence indices. All these alterations affected the structure and functioning of sperm.

Abstract
Background Isometric strength measures and timed up and go (TUG) tests are both recognized as valuable tools for fall prediction in older adults. However, results from direct comparison of these two tests are lacking. We aimed to assess the potential of isometric strength measures and the different modalities of the TUG test to detect individuals at risk of falling. Methods This is a prospective cohort study including 24 community-dwelling older adults (≥65 years, 19 females, 88±7 years). Participants performed three variations of the TUG test (standard, counting and holding a full cup) and three isometric strength tests (handgrip, knee extension and hip flexion) at several time points (at baseline and every ~6 weeks) during a one-year follow-up. The association between these tests and the incidence of falls during the follow-up was assessed. Results Twelve participants out of 24 participants experienced falls during the follow-up. Fallers showed a significantly lower handgrip strength (-5.7 kg, 95% confidence interval: -10.4 to -1.1, p=0.019) and knee extension strength (-4.9 kg, -9.6 to -0.2, p=0.042) at follow-up, while no significant differences were found for any TUG variation. Conclusions Handgrip and knee extension strength measures - particularly when assessed regularly over time - have the potential to serve as a simple and easy tool for detecting individuals at risk of falling as compared to functional mobility measures (ie, TUG test).

Abstract
The reproductive physiology of Corynorhinus mexicanus includes a testes growth-involution cycle. Testis recrudescence begins in May-June, peaks in August and then undergoes a profound involution being totally regressed in November. Adult, male individuals were captured monthly during one year and ROS scavenging enzyme activities were measured in testes and expressed per total wet-weight and per mg protein. SOD total activity is very low from October to February; increases sharply one full month before testes recrudescence starts, and in August, when testis activity was at its peak, SOD is 3-4 times lower than in July. Catalase total activity is bimodal. The main peak of activity occurs during testicular recrudescence with an additional smaller peak, two months before the onset of recrudescence. Glutathione peroxidase total activity parallels almost exactly the testis growth cycle, increases in July, reaches a peak in August and decreases through September to almost disappear in October. SOD specific activity shows a pre-testicular increase of activity, maintains its activity from March to July and then descends drastically to almost nil in August, maintaining these low values until February. Catalase specific activity is particularly important during the period of testicular regression. GPX specific activity is low from March to July, months of testicular recrudescence; whereas its activity increases in August and peaks in November, when testes regression occurs. Our data show that ROS-scavenging enzymes may play a very important role during testes involution-recrudescence in C. mexicanus, and we believe their participation could be equally important in all seasonally breeding mammals.
