Localization properties of electronic states in a polaron model of poly(dG)-poly(dC) and poly(dA)-poly(dT) DNA polymers

Computational modeling of photoexcitation in DNA single and double strands

The photoexcitation of DNA strands triggers extremely complex photoinduced processes, which cannot be understood solely on the basis of the behavior of the nucleobase building blocks. Decisive factors in DNA oligomers and polymers include collective electronic effects, excitonic coupling, hydrogen-bonding interactions, local steric hindrance, charge transfer, and environmental and solvent effects. This chapter surveys recent theoretical and computational efforts to model real-world excited-state DNA strands using a variety of established and emerging theoretical methods. One central issue is the role of localized vs delocalized excitations and the extent to which they determine the nature and the temporal evolution of the initial photoexcitation in DNA strands.

Enhancement of transport in DNA-like systems induced by backbone disorder

We report a theoretical study highlighting the fundamental effects of backbone disorder which simulates the environmental complications on charge transport properties of biological and synthetic DNA molecules. Based on effective tight-binding models of duplex DNA, the Lyapunov coefficient and current-voltage characteristics are numerically calculated by varying the backbone disorder degree. In contrast to the localization picture that the conduction of duplex DNA becomes poorer when the backbone disorder degree is increased, we find that the backbone disorder can enhance the charge transport ability of the DNA molecules when the environment-induced disorder surpasses a critical value, giving rise to a semiconducting-metallic transition. The physical origin for this is traced back to the antiresonant effects. These results provide a scenario to interpret a variety of transport behaviors observed in DNA molecules and suggest perspectives for future experiments intending to control the charge transport through DNA-based nanodevices.

DNA double helices for single molecule electronics

The combination of self-assembly and electronic properties as well as its true nanoscale dimensions make DNA a promising candidate for a building block of single molecule electronics. We argue that the intrinsic double helix conformation of the DNA strands provides a possibility to drive the electric current through the DNA by the perpendicular electric (gating) field. The transistor effect in the poly(G)-poly(C) synthetic DNA is demonstrated within a simple model approach. We put forward experimental setups to observe the predicted effect and discuss possible device applications of DNA. In particular, we propose a design of the single molecule analog of the Esaki diode.

Calculation of the charge-carrier mobility of polyguanylic acid: The simultaneous effect of stretching and twisting

Charge-carrier (electron and hole) mobilities of polyguanylic acid have been computed using the deformation-potential approximation from ab initio Hartree-Fock band structure. Mobilities resulting from electron scattering on torsional acoustic phonons are calculated and compared to those obtained from a previous calculation [F. B. Beleznay et al., J. Chem. Phys. 119, 5690 (2003)] considering interaction with compressional phonons. The simultaneous effect of the two independent scatterings is also calculated.
