Bidisperse granular avalanches on inclined planes: a rich variety of behaviors

Stress partition and microstructure in size-segregating granular flows

When a granular mixture involving grains of different sizes is shaken, sheared, mixed, or left to flow, grains tend to separate by sizes in a process known as size segregation. In this study, we explore the size segregation mechanism in granular chute flows in terms of the pressure distribution and granular microstructure. Therefore, two-dimensional discrete numerical simulations of bidisperse granular chute flows are systematically analyzed. Based on the theoretical models of J. M. N. T. Gray and A. R. Thornton [Proc. R. Soc. A 461, 1447] and K. M. Hill and D. S. Tan [J. Fluid Mech. 756, 54 (2014)], we explore the stress partition in the phases of small and large grains, discriminating between contact stresses and kinetic stresses. Our results support both gravity-induced and shear-gradient-induced segregation mechanisms. However, we show that the contact stress partition is extremely sensitive to the definition of the partial stress tensors and, more specifically, to the way mixed contacts (i.e., involving a small grain and a large grain) are handled, making conclusions on gravity-induced segregation uncertain. By contrast, the computation of the partial kinetic stress tensors is robust. The kinetic pressure partition exhibits a deviation from continuum mixture theory of a significantly higher amplitude than the contact pressure and displays a clear dependence on the flow dynamics. Finally, using a simple approximation for the contact partial stress tensors, we investigate how the contact stress partition relates to the flow microstructure and suggest that the latter may provide an interesting proxy for studying gravity-induced segregation.

Kinematics of monodisperse and bidisperse granular flows in quasi-two-dimensional bounded heaps

Quasi-two-dimensional bounded heap flow is a useful model for many granular flows in industry and nature. It belongs to a family of free surface flows—inclined chute flow, rotating tumbler flow and unbounded heap flow—but differs from the others in that uniform deposition of particles onto the static bed results in the uniform rise of the heap. The kinematics, however, are only partially understood. We performed discrete element method simulations to study granular flows in quasi-two-dimensional bounded heaps. The experimentally validated computational results show a universal functional form for the streamwise velocity profile for both monodisperse and bidisperse systems when velocities and coordinates are scaled by the local surface velocity and the local flowing layer thickness. This holds true regardless of streamwise location, feed rate, particle size distribution and, most surprisingly, the local particle concentration for bidisperse flows. The local surface velocity decreases linearly in the streamwise direction, while the flowing layer thickness remains nearly constant; both quantities depending only on local flow rate and local mean particle diameter. Additionally, the velocity profile normal to the overall flow, which is important in understanding segregation, can be predicted analytically from the streamwise velocity and matches the simulation results.

The influence of localised size reorganisation on short-duration bidispersed granular flows

We investigate experimentally the runout resulting from the collapse of a granular column containing two particle species that differ in size only. The experimental configuration is strictly two-dimensional (only one particle per width of the experimental tank) and we explore both the role of the initial arrangement and proportion of the two particle sizes in the column, using high-speed videography, and by determining the centres of mass of the big and small particles in the initial column and the final deposit. The duration of the experiment is sufficiently short that large-scale segregation does not occur, however, we find a clear dependence of runout on both initial mixture arrangement and proportion for all conditions. We investigated this observation through detailed analysis of the flow front motion, and identify a characteristic "stopping" phase when dissipation dominates, and we apply a shallow layer model at the flow front to show how the initial mixture arrangement and proportion influence the effective coefficient of friction during emplacement. We find that a bidispersed mixture can induce a larger friction on emplacement than a monodispersed mixture, and the highest coefficient of friction was found for a well-mixed initial arrangement of particles at the proportion that shows maximum horizontal spreading of the flow. These observations suggest that downwards percolation of fine particles takes place at the front of the collapsing column, and so localised size segregation processes at the flow front can control flow mobility. This effect is likely to be important in controlling the mobility of large geophysical flows that occur on finite time scales, and whose deposits typically show granular segregation at the front and edges but not throughout the entire deposit.

Rheology of evolving bidisperse granular media

We investigate the mixing of bidisperse distributions of spherical particles for slowly rotating vanes by pouring smaller beads, diameter d(1), onto a monodisperse bed composed of larger beads, diameter d(0), and monitoring the torque and lift forces. If the mixing beads are too small, d(1)/d(0)<0.05, the drag and lift are unaltered. Otherwise smaller beads displace larger beads from the shearing region, and if present in sufficient quantity both the drag and lift diminish to values of a monodisperse bed composed entirely of the smaller beads. We observe reductions in the torque up to 70%. The rate at which smaller beads leave the shearing region decreases as their size relative to the larger beads increases, and for d(1)/d(0)>0.155 the smaller beads remain inside the shearing region.
