Reachability Analysis of Neural Masses and Seizure Control Based on Combination Convolutional Neural Network

Epileptic seizures arise from synchronous firing of multiple spatially separated neural masses; therefore, many synchrony measures are used for seizure detection and characterization. However, synchrony measures reflect only the overall interaction strength among populations of neurons but cannot reveal the coupling strengths among individual populations, which is more important for seizure control. The concepts of reachability and reachable cluster were proposed to denote the coupling strengths of a set of neural masses. Here, we describe a seizure control method based on coupling strengths using combination convolutional neural network (CCNN) modeling. The neurophysiologically based neural mass model (NMM), which can bridge signal processing and neurophysiology, was used to simulate the proposed controller. Although the adjacency matrix and reachability matrix could not be identified perfectly, the vast majority of adjacency values were identified, reaching 95.64% using the CCNN with an optimal threshold. For cases of discrete and continuous coupling strengths, the proposed controller maintained the average reachable cluster strengths at about 0.1, indicating effective seizure control.

Dynamic Characteristics of a New Three-Dimensional Linear Homeomorphic Saccade Model

A linear homeomorphic eye movement model that produces 3D saccadic eye movements consistent with anatomical and physiological evidence is introduced in this second part of a two-paper sequence. Central to the model is the implementation of a time-optimal neural control strategy involving six linear muscle models that faithfully represent the dynamic characteristics of 3D saccades. The muscle is modeled as a parallel combination of viscosity [Formula: see text] and series elasticity [Formula: see text], connected to the parallel combination of active-state tension generator [Formula: see text], viscosity element [Formula: see text], and length tension elastic element [Formula: see text]. The neural input for each muscle is separately maintained while the effective pulling direction is modulated by its respective pulley. The results demonstrate that a time-optimal, 2D commutative neural controller, together with the pulley system, actively functions to implement Listing's law during both static and dynamic simulations and provide an excellent match with the experimental data. The parameters and neural input to the muscles are estimated using a time domain system identification technique from saccade data, with an excellent match between the model estimates and the data. A total of 20 horizontal, 5 vertical and 62 oblique saccades are analyzed.

MUSIC-Expected maximization gaussian mixture methodology for clustering and detection of task-related neuronal firing rates

Researchers often rely on simple methods to identify involvement of neurons in a particular motor task. The historical approach has been to inspect large groups of neurons and subjectively separate neurons into groups based on the expertise of the investigator. In cases where neuron populations are small it is reasonable to inspect these neuronal recordings and their firing rates carefully to avoid data omissions. In this paper, a new methodology is presented for automatic objective classification of neurons recorded in association with behavioral tasks into groups. By identifying characteristics of neurons in a particular group, the investigator can then identify functional classes of neurons based on their relationship to the task. The methodology is based on integration of a multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm to extract relevant features from the firing rate and an expectation-maximization Gaussian mixture algorithm (EM-GMM) to cluster the extracted features. The methodology is capable of identifying and clustering similar firing rate profiles automatically based on specific signal features. An empirical wavelet transform (EWT) was used to validate the features found in the MUSIC pseudospectrum and the resulting signal features captured by the methodology. Additionally, this methodology was used to inspect behavioral elements of neurons to physiologically validate the model. This methodology was tested using a set of data collected from awake behaving non-human primates.

High-Density Liquid-State Machine Circuitry for Time-Series Forecasting

Spiking neural networks (SNN) are the last neural network generation that try to mimic the real behavior of biological neurons. Although most research in this area is done through software applications, it is in hardware implementations in which the intrinsic parallelism of these computing systems are more efficiently exploited. Liquid state machines (LSM) have arisen as a strategic technique to implement recurrent designs of SNN with a simple learning methodology. In this work, we show a new low-cost methodology to implement high-density LSM by using Boolean gates. The proposed method is based on the use of probabilistic computing concepts to reduce hardware requirements, thus considerably increasing the neuron count per chip. The result is a highly functional system that is applied to high-speed time series forecasting.

Assembling A Multi-Feature EEG Classifier for Left–Right Motor Imagery Data Using Wavelet-Based Fuzzy Approximate Entropy for Improved Accuracy

An EEG classifier is proposed for application in the analysis of motor imagery (MI) EEG data from a brain–computer interface (BCI) competition in this study. Applying subject-action-related brainwave data acquired from the sensorimotor cortices, the system primarily consists of artifact and background removal, feature extraction, feature selection and classification. In addition to background noise, the electrooculographic (EOG) artifacts are also automatically removed to further improve the analysis of EEG signals. Several potential features, including amplitude modulation, spectral power and asymmetry ratio, adaptive autoregressive model, and wavelet fuzzy approximate entropy (wfApEn) that can measure and quantify the complexity or irregularity of EEG signals, are then extracted for subsequent classification. Finally, the significant sub-features are selected from feature combination by quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization and then classified by support vector machine (SVM). Compared with feature extraction without wfApEn on MI data from two data sets for nine subjects, the results indicate that the proposed system including wfApEn obtains better performance in average classification accuracy of 88.2% and average number of commands per minute of 12.1, which is promising in the BCI work applications.
