Abstract
Compound 1 has been prepared by the reaction of 4-nitrophthalonitrile and trans-2-methoxy-4-(2-nitrovinil)phenol by the common method of nucleophilic substitution of an activated nitro group in an aromatic ring. The metallophthalocyanines 2, 3 were prepared by the reaction of a dinitrile derivative with Co(OAc)(2) or Zn(OAc)(2) in DMSO. The lutetium bis-(phthalocyaninato) complex 4 was obtained by treating the dinitrile derivative with lutetium acetate and DBU in 1-hexanol. The new compounds were characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR, (1)H-NMR, MALDI-TOF MS and UV/Vis spectral data. The spectroscopic data of the new compounds were in accordance with the structures. The temperature and frequency dependence of dielectric and conduction properties of the spin coated film of compounds (2-4) have been studied by fabricating metal-Pc-metal structures. The results show that compound 2 has giant dielectric constant. At a low range of frequency and room temperature, ε' is found to be equal to 2.33 × 10(6), 1.53 × 10(4) and 1.03 × 10(4) for 2, 3 and 4, respectively. The giant dielectric behavior of 2 is mainly attributed to Maxwell-Wagner polarization. The obtained results also indicated that the frequency dependence of the dielectric permittivity, ε'(ω), exhibits non-Debye type relaxation for all temperatures investigated. The ac conductivity results gave a temperature dependent frequency exponent s. The results were compared with the prediction of the Quantum Mechanical Tunneling and Correlated Barrier Hopping models.

Abstract
The unique semiconducting, optical and electrochemical properties of radical lanthanide bisphthalocyanines make them ideal materials for sensing applications. A variety of chemical sensors have been developed using rare-earth bisphthalocyanine thin films. In this paper, the characteristics of sensors based on bisphthalocyanines are reviewed. The advantages of these sensors with respect to sensors developed using other metallophthalocyanines are discussed. Resistive sensors based on bisphthalocyanines change their conductivity when exposed to a variety of pollutant gases and volatile organic compounds. Because bisphthalocyanines are intrinsic semiconductors, the conductivity of their thin films is higher than the conductivity of metallophthalocyanine thin films. This facilitates the electrical measurements and enhances the sensitivity of the sensors. Optical sensors have also been developed based on the rich optical properties shown by bisphthalocyanines. Films characterized by a bright green color change to red or to blue upon oxidation or reduction. The changes also affect the charge-transfer band associated to the free radical that bisphthalocyanines show in the near infrared region. This band coincides with telecommunication wavelengths, making possible the fabrication of fiber optic sensors where a phthalocyanine film is deposited at one of the ends of the fiber. Electrochemical sensors have been developed taking advantage of the unique electrochemical behavior associated to the one-electron oxidation and one-electron reduction of the phthalocyanine ring. These reversible processes are extremely sensitive to the nature of the electrolytic solution. This has made possible the development of voltammetric sensors able to produce particular signals when immersed in different liquids. In the last part of the paper, the fundamentals and performance characteristics of electronic noses and electronic tongues based on bisphthalocyanines are described. Such devices have been successfully exploited in quality control, classification, freshness evaluation and authenticity assessment of a variety of food, mainly wines and olive oils.

Abstract
In this study, the synthesis of a supramolecular hexaphthalocyaninato hexazinc(II) with hexylthio substituents is reported. Starting from 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-dimethoxycalix[4]arene, mononitro derivative of calix[4]arene 1 was obtained. Compound 1 was converted to phthalodinitrile derivative 2 by the reaction with 4-nitrophthalonitrile in dry dimethylsulfoxide by the method of nucleophilic substitution of an activated nitro group in an aromatic ring. The tetramerization of compound 2 with Zn ( OAc )2·2 H 2 O in 1-pentanol gave the novel ball-type binuclear zinc (II) phthalocyanine 3 which was reacted with unsymmetric zinc(II) phthalocyanine 4 to furnish a supramolecular assembly of a zinc(II) phthalocyanine of a ball type with four zinc(II) phthalocyanines through azo bridges, 5. Newly synthesized compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, UV-vis, IR, MALDI-TOF MS and 1 H NMR spectra. The electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties of 5 were also examined in nonaqueous media. The measurements showed the formation of various mixed-valence oxidation and reduction species, due to the strong intramolecular interactions between the Pc rings. Both DC and AC conductivity data were analyzed by the existing theory.
