A Porphyrin-based NIR Fluorescent Probe for Bi3+ and Potential Applications

Herein, we have prepared a 5,10,15,20-Tetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl) porphyrin (P) which acts as a probe for selective and sensitive detection of Bi3+ ions. Probe P was obtained by reacting pyrrole with 4-hydroxyl benzaldehyde and characterized by NMR, IR, and ESI-MS. All photo-physical studies of P were tested in DMSO:H2O (8:2, v/v) media by spectrophotometry and spectrofluorometry respectively. The selectivity of P was tested with different metal ions in solution as well as in the solid phase, only Bi3+ showed red fluorescence quenching while with other metal ions, no such effect was observed. The Job's plot unveiled the 1:1 stoichiometric binding ratio of the probe with Bi3+ and anticipated association constant of 3.4 ×105 M-1, whereas the Stern-Volmer quenching constant was noticed to be 5.6 ×105 M-1. Probe P could detect Bi3+ down to 27 nM by spectrofluorometric. The binding mechanism of P with Bi3+ was well supported with NMR, mass, and DFT studies. Further, the P was applied for the quantitative determination of Bi3+ in various water samples and the biocompatibility of P was examined using neuro 2A (N2a) cells. Overall, probe P proves promising for the detection of Bi3+ in the semi-aqueous phase and it is the first report as a colorimetric and fluorogenic probe.

Porphyrin NanoMetal-Organic Frameworks as Cancer Theranostic Agents

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are hybrid multifunctional platforms that have found remarkable applications in cancer treatment and diagnostics. Independently, these materials can be employed in cancer treatment as intelligent drug carriers in chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, and photodynamic therapy; conversely, MOFs can further be used as diagnostic tools in fluorescence imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography imaging, and photoacoustic imaging. One essential property of these materials is their great ability to fine-tune their composition toward a specific application by way of a judicious choice of the starting building materials (metal nodes and organic ligands). Moreover, many advancements were made concerning the preparation of these materials, including the ability to downsize the crystallites yielding nanoporous porphyrin MOFs (NMOFs) which are of great interest for clinical treatment and diagnostic theranostic tools. The usage of porphyrins as ligands allows a high degree of multifunctionality. Historically these molecules are well known for their reactive oxygen species formation and strong fluorescence characteristics, and both have proved helpful in cancer treatment and diagnostic tools. The anticipation that porphyrins in MOFs could prompt the resulting materials to multifunctional theranostic platforms is a reality nowadays with a series of remarkable and ground-breaking reports available in the literature. This is particularly remarkable in the last five years, when the scientific community witnessed rapid development in porphyrin MOFs theranostic agents through the development of imaging technologies and treatment strategies for cancer. This manuscript reviews the most relevant recent results and achievements in this particular area of interest in MOF chemistry and application.

Porphyrin MOF-Derived Porous Carbons: Preparation and Applications

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline materials with permanent porosity, composed of metal nodes and organic linkers whose well-ordered arrangement enables them to act as ideal templates to produce materials with a uniform distribution of heteroatom and metal elements. The hybrid nature of MOFs, well-defined pore structure, large surface area and tunable chemical composition of their precursors, led to the preparation of various MOF-derived porous carbons with controlled structures and compositions bearing some of the unique structural properties of the parent networks. In this regard, an important class of MOFs constructed with porphyrin ligands were described, playing significant roles in the metal distribution within the porous carbon material. The most striking early achievements using porphyrin-based MOF porous carbons are here summarized, including preparation methods and their transformation into materials for electrochemical reactions.

Synthesis and characterization of novel 5-monocarbohydrate-10,20-bis-aryl-porphyrins

The synthesis of derivatives bearing glucose or galactose units linked by an acrylate spacer to one free meso position of a bis-aryl-porphyrin macrocycle was developed and characterized by standard spectroscopic techniques. The new mono-substituted gluco- and galacto-porphyrin derivatives 5–8 present an alternative to the widespread tetra-aryl porphyrin functionalization. Singlet oxygen studies showed a comparable singlet oxygen production with TPP. Furthermore, the less bulky architectures here synthesized present an opportunity to enhance the PDT and PDI capabilities of glycoporphyrins with a simple synthetic modification at one of the meso positions.

Copper-phthalocyanine coordination polymer as a reusable catechol oxidase biomimetic catalyst

We report the synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity of a new phthalocyanine coordination polymer (Cu₄CuPcSPy).

N-Confused Porphyrin Immobilized on Solid Supports: Synthesis and Metal Ions Sensing Efficacy

In this work, the N-confused porphyrin 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-2-aza-21-carbaporphyrin (NCTPP) was immobilized on neutral or cationic supports based on silica and on Merrifield resin. The new materials were characterized by appropriate techniques (UV-Vis spectroscopy, SEM, and zeta potential analysis). Piezoelectric quartz crystal gold electrodes were coated with the different hybrids and their ability to interact with heavy metals was evaluated. The preliminary results obtained showed that the new materials can be explored for metal cations detection and the modification of the material surface is a key factor in tuning the metal selectivity.

β-Formyl- and β-Vinylporphyrins: Magic Building Blocks for Novel Porphyrin Derivatives

Porphyrins bearing formyl or vinyl groups have been explored as starting materials to prepare new compounds with adequate features for different applications. In this review it is discussed mainly synthetic strategies based on the reaction of meso-tetraarylporphyrins bearing those groups at β-pyrrolic positions. The use of some of the obtained porphyrin derivatives for further transformations, namely via pericyclic reactions, is also highlighted.
