Synthesis of Vanadyl Complexes of N-Confused Porphyrins and Their Bromoperoxidase-like Catalytic Activity

Two new vanadyl complexes of N-confused porphyrins (NCPs), [VONCTPP] (V-1) and [VONCP(OMe)8] (V-2), have been synthesized for the first time and investigated as a catalyst for the oxidative bromination reaction of phenol and its derivatives. This article further delineates crystal structures, photophysical, and redox properties of both the vanadyl complexes. Complexes V-1 and V-2 exhibited a significant red shift in their absorption spectra compared with their respective free bases. The single-crystal structure of V-1 revealed that the complex is in the 2H tautomeric form, while EPR studies revealed the +4 oxidation state of vanadium metal having an axial compression with dxy1 configuration. Catalytic potential for bromoperoxidases-like activity has been explored for both complexes V-1 and V-2 for the first time in NCP chemistry with excellent TOF values (4.7-6.3 s-1 for V-1 and 7.3-8.7 s-1 for V-2) using KBr as a source of bromine and H2O2 as a green oxidant in aqueous acidic medium at 298 K. Notably, both catalysts show excellent recyclability over five cycles. The vanadyl-metalated NCPs exhibit excellent stability in the air.

Conducting 1D nanostructures from light-stimulated copper-metalated porphyrin-dibenzothiophene

Control over the dimensionality of stimulated organic semiconductors has aroused significant interest in organic electronics; however, the design of such materials still remains to be decided. Herein, we have developed three dibenzothiophene-appended freebase, zinc-metalated and copper-metalated porphyrin derivatives (PFb-DBT, PZn-DBT and PCu-DBT) in which PCu-DBT leads to an anion-binding complex in chloroform upon the application of light, resulting in self-assembled 1D nanostructures with high electrical conductivity. Nevertheless, light-stimulated freebase and zinc-metalated P-DBT undergo protonation and demetalation. Electron microscopic images displayed the anion-binding-assisted 1D nanostructure using weak non-covalent interactions, which promotes enhancement in electrical conductivity among other things, as confirmed by electrochemical impedance spectra. Thus, the generation of well-defined nanostructures with improved electronic characteristics from stimuli-responsive organic dyes suggests the importance of developing various smart materials for efficient field effect transistors and sensors.

Sono-oxidative desulfurization of fuels using heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts: A comprehensive review

Recently, environmental pollution has increased significantly due to petroleum-based fuels widely used in vehicles. This environmental pollution is mainly due to the acidic SO2 gas generated by the combustion of fuels and emitted into the atmosphere. SO2 gas causes not only acid rain but also corrosion of metal parts of engines in vehicles. In addition, it functions as a catalyst poison in catalytic converters in exhaust system. Due to these damages, strict regulations have been introduced to reduce the amount of sulfur in fuels. As of 2005, the permissible amount of sulfur in diesel fuels in Europe and America has been limited to 10 and 15 ppm by weight, respectively. Due to the decreasing oil reserves in the world, high viscosity petroleums containing high sulfur and heavier fractions (i.e., low-quality oils) are increasing, thus making desulfurization difficult and leading to high costly process. Since time and economic loss are very important today, these two terms have to be reduced to a minimum. Recently, ultrasound wave in ODS shown as an alternative to HDS is utilized to further increase desulfurization in shorter times. Ultrasound wave locally creates high temperatures and high pressures (hot-spot theory) in liquid, causing the desulfurization reaction to accelerate further. In this review, the advantages and difficulties of oxidative desulfurization, the economics of ultrasound-assisted oxidative desulfurization are summarized and recommendations for improving the process are presented.

Selective epoxidation of olefins by vanadylporphyrin [VIVO(TPP)] and electron deficient nonplanar β-octabromovanadylporphyrin [VIVO(TPPBr8)]

Meso-tetraphenylporphyrinatooxidovanadium(IV) [VIVO(TPP)] (1) and 2,3,7,8,12,13, 17,18-octabromo-meso-tetraphenylporphyrinatooxidovanadium(IV) [VIVO(TPPBr[Formula: see text]] (2) were synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. 1 and 2 were utilized as efficient catalysts for the selective epoxidation of olefins. Catalyst 2 shows very high catalytic activity (TOF = 8783–13108 h[Formula: see text] as compared to 1 (TOF = 2175–3296 h[Formula: see text]. The catalysts are recyclable, as their recyclability was checked for four cycles and show only minor reduction of their efficiency.
