Multi O- and S-isotopes as tracers of black crusts formation under volcanic and non-volcanic atmospheric conditions in Sicily (Italy)

The deterioration of monument or building stone materials is mostly due to the growth of black crusts that cause blackening and disaggregation of the exposed surface. This study reports on new oxygen (δ¹⁷O, δ¹⁸O and Δ¹⁷O) and sulphur (δ³³S, δ³⁴S, δ³⁶S, Δ³³S and Δ³⁶S) isotopic analyses of black crust sulphates formed on building stones in Sicily (Southern Italy). The measurements are used to identify the possible influence of volcanic emissions on black crust formation. Black crusts were mostly sampled on carbonate stone substrate in different locations subject to various sulphur emission sources (marine, anthropogenic and volcanic). Unlike atmospheric sulphate aerosols that mostly exhibit Δ³³S > 0‰, here most of the analysed black crust sulphates show negative Δ³³S. This confirms that black crust sulphates do not result from deposition of sulphate aerosols or of rainwater but mostly from the oxidation of dry deposited SO₂ onto the stone substrate. The δ³⁴S and δ¹⁸O values indicate that most of black crust sulphate originates from anthropogenic activities. Δ¹⁷O values are found to be related to the sampling location. The largest ¹⁷O-anomalies (up to ~4‰) are measured in black crust from areas highly influenced by volcanic emissions, which demonstrates the strong involvement of ozone in the formation of black crusts in volcanically influenced environments.

Application of spectrometric analysis to the identification of pollution sources causing cultural heritage damage

Black crusts are recognized to have been, up to now, one of the major deterioration forms affecting the built heritage in urban areas. Their formation is demonstrated to occur mainly on carbonate building materials, whose interaction with an SO2-loaded atmosphere leads to the transformation of calcium carbonate (calcite) into calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum) which, together with embedded carbonaceous particles, consequently forms the black crusts on the stone surface. An analytical study was carried out on black crust samples collected from limestone monumental buildings and churches belonging to the European built Heritage, i.e., the Corner Palace in Venice (Italy), the Cathedral of St. Rombouts in Mechelen (Belgium), and the Church of St. Eustache in Paris (France). For a complete characterization of the black crusts, an approach integrating different and complementary techniques was used, including laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, optical and scanning electron microscopy. In particular, the application of LA-ICP-MS permitted to obtain a complete geochemical characterization in terms of trace elements of the black crusts from the inner parts to the external layers contributing to the identification of the major combustion sources responsible for the deterioration over time of the monuments under study. In addition, the obtained results revealed a relation between the height of sampling and the concentration of heavy metals and proved that the crust composition can be a marker to evaluate the variation of the fuels used over time.

Diagnosing decay: the value of medical analogy in understanding the weathering of building stones

This paper represents the first element of the introduction to this volume, and as such investigates its principal underlying rationale; namely the importance of accurate diagnosis of stone decay in the formulation of effective conservation strategies. It does this by exploring ways in which perceived similarities between stone decay and human disease have influenced attitudes towards conservation, and how refinements within medical diagnostic strategies can inform future condition assessments of building stones. In doing so, it identifies the importance of looking beyond obvious symptoms to the isolation of the fundamental causes of decay and the factors that control them. These controls are strongly conditioned by accumulated stresses within the stonework. In many buildings these are the product of a complex history involving exposure to a variety of environmental conditions and successive human intervention. Only by understanding these memory effects is it possible to explain current decay phenomena, attempt any prediction of future behaviour or recommend appropriate intervention. The concept of appropriateness is further developed through an examination of the TNM (Tumours, Nodes and Metastases) Staging System for cancer diagnosis. This holistic scheme embodies a progressive approach to diagnosis that begins with a clinical assessment based on how the patient presents, and leads on to more detailed pathological investigations involving sampling, testing and analysis. The scheme also requires an assessment of the certainty of the diagnosis and proposed treatments must be viewed in terms of a cost benefit analysis. A modified version of this staging system has already been developed for use in the physical assessment of buildings. It is suggested that the next stage in its development, and that of any other condition assessment procedure that deals solely with the fabric of a building, is the inclusion of a value-based appraisal of its cultural significance.
