Turning Towards the Affective: Medical Semiotics of Child Maltreatment in Denmark

Signs of child maltreatment may be physical and detectable by clinical examination but may also arise as a feeling of strangeness that sparks uncertainty. Based on fieldwork in Danish general practice, and thinking along recent discussions around semiotics and affect, the article explores how feelings of "strangeness" arise in child consultations. It focuses on how subjective, embodied, and interpersonal reactions arise, how signs, however tactile and arbitrary, are felt and experienced, and how engaging with affective aspects when doing diagnosis, could expand the medical semiotics of child maltreatment.

Academics with Clay Feet? Anthropological Perspectives on Academic Freedom in Twenty-First Century African Universities

Clay feet are heavy and disabling, sadly in the decolonial scholarly battlefield which otherwise requires all-weather feet suitable for ongoing battles. Drawing on autoethnographic experiences in some African universities and drawing on Melanesian cargo cults, this paper argues that to decolonise Africa, African academics should abate cargo cult mentalities which account for pathological and uncritical intellectual dependence on theories, ideas and models from elsewhere. Similarly, drawing on Melanesian bigmanism and drawing on how some academics seek to control how students and colleagues think and write, this paper contends that those that pose as bigmen and bigwomen in African universities are a serious threat to decolonial critical, creative, innovative and original thinking. Thus, populated with some high-ranking academics who, nonetheless, lack decolonial creativity, originality, innovativeness and critical thinking, African universities are - like in Melanesian bigmen societies - marked by patron-client relations within which students and colleagues are sadly corralled into epistemic clientelism.

Malfunctioning Affective Infrastructures

Smoothly functioning infrastructures are “unnoticeable”; they attract attention upon a breakdown. When infrastructure does not function as intended, it does not stop working altogether. Rather, it functions in unprecedented ways. This article argues that in the process of malfunctioning, infrastructure not only facilitates engagement, but also produces an affect. This ethnography shows how the “broken road” (razbitaia doroga) in rural postindustrial Eastern Siberia becomes a site around which belonging and relating unfold. The broken road functions as infrastructure acquiring a capacity to be affective precisely as it malfunctions. The affect that people experience in connection to the malfunctioning piece of infrastructure has components of anger and annoyance, a sense of unity, sociality, and camaraderie, as well as the feelings of belonging to a certain group.

Understanding men, mood, and avoidable deaths from AIDS in Western Kenya

A person diagnosed with HIV today might never experience AIDS, nor transmit HIV. Advances in treatment effectiveness and coverage has made the UN 2030 vision for the 'end of AIDS' thinkable. Yet drug adherence and resistance are continuing challenges, contributing to avoidable deaths in high burden African countries, especially among men. The mood of global policy rhetoric is hopeful, though cautious. The mood of people living with HIV struggling to adhere to life-saving medication is harder to capture, but vital to understand. This paper draws on ethnographic fieldwork with a high burden population in Kenya to explore specific socio-economic contexts that lead to a potent mixture of fatalism and ambition among men now in their thirties who came of age during the devastating 1990s AIDS crisis. It seeks to understand why some HIV-positive members of this bio-generation find it hard to take their life-saving medication consistently, gambling with their lives and the lives of others in pursuit of a life that counts. It argues that mood - here understood as a shared generational consciousness and collective affect created by experiencing specific historical moments - should be taken seriously as legitimate evidence in HIV programming decisions.

Cantando el sufrimiento del río. Memoria, poética y acción política de las cantadoras del Medio Atrato chocoano

Desde la comunidad de Pogue, un grupo de cantadoras lleva los alabaos a diferentes escenarios públicos, como sucede en las conmemoraciones de la masacre de Bojayá o la firma del acuerdo de paz. Al situar el afecto y el sentimiento como fuerzas creadoras del canto, la composición y la puesta en escena, las cantadoras de Pogue recrean lenguajes y modos de acción política. Con una voz colectiva construyen una narrativa sonora que expresa tanto su dolor como sus reivindicaciones. El sentimiento comunica un conocimiento emocional y encarnado de las mujeres e impulsa formas propias de producción de memoria histórica y acción política. Explorando el canto, el sentimiento y la guerra, este artículo apunta a las intersecciones entre cultura, política y resistencia que representan dichas composiciones y prácticas de cantar.
