Liquid Structure of Ionic Liquids with [NTf2]- Anions, Derived from Neutron Scattering

The liquid structure of three common ionic liquids (ILs) was investigated by neutron scattering for the first time. The ILs were based on the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion, abbreviated in the literature as [NTf2]- or [TFSI]-, and on the following cations: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium, [C2mim]+; 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium, [C10mim]+; and trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium, [P666,14]+. Comparative analysis of the three ILs confirmed increased size of nonpolar nanodomains with increasing bulk of alkyl chains. It also sheds light on the cation-anion interactions, providing experimental insight into strength, directionality, and angle of hydrogen bonds between protons on the imidazolium ring, as well as H-C-P protons in [P666,14]+, to oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the [NTf2]-. The new Dissolve data analysis package enabled, for the first time, the analysis of neutron scattering data of ILs with long alkyl chains, in particular, of [P666,14][NTf2]. Results generated with Dissolve were validated by comparing outputs from three different models, starting from three different sets of cation charges, for each of the three ILs, which gave convergent outcomes. Finally, a modified method for the synthesis of perdeuterated [P666,14][NTf2] has been reported, with the aim of reporting a complete set of synthetic and data processing approaches, laying robust foundations that enable the study of the phosphonium ILs family by neutron scattering.

Adsorption of Tunable aryl alkyl ionic liquids (TILs) on the graphene and Defective graphene nanosheets: A DFT Study

Optical and electronic characteristics of the graphene nanosheets (GNS) could be altered by some structural defects such as double-vacancy and Stone-Wales ones. The physisorption manner of [MPI][BF4], [MPT1][BF4], [MPT2][BF4], and [MPTT][BF4] ionic liquids on intact and defective GNS surfaces were investigated using M06-2X/cc-pVDZ computational method. Capability for adsorption on the DV and SW graphene surfaces by TILs is increased by about 1.0-4.3 and 0.4-2.0 kcal/mol respectively. The electrostatic potential of the GNS-DV surface is more negative than the GNS-SW one which enables it to interact with cation parts of the adsorbed TILs so extensively. The highest adsorption energy belongs to the [MPI][BF4]/GNS-DV system. Adsorption of the TILs on the GNS surfaces leads to a decrease in the energy of the LUMO molecular orbital as well as their energy gap of them. Results revealed that the electrical conductivity, as well as absorption spectra of the GNS surfaces, are affected by TILs adsorption and defect nature.

Wettability and Surface Tension of Imidazolium, Ammonium, and Phosphonium Bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide Ionic Liquids: Comparison between Pentyl, Ethoxyethyl, and Ethylthioethyl Groups

This study particularly compares the surface tensions and contact angles for molten bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide salts of imidazolium, ammonium, and phosphonium cations with the pentyl, ethoxyethyl, or ethylthioethyl group. The examined substrate plates for contact angle measurements include silicate glass, platinum, copper, graphene, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). In addition, quantum chemistry calculations were performed to obtain the optimized structures of the cations and anions of the ionic liquids (ILs) that were studied here along with some typical anions and their dipole moments, mean polarizabilities, and charge distributions. All ILs showed the same order of contact angles with respect to the substrates: PTFE > graphene ≈ copper ≈ platinum > silicate glass. By comparing the three functional groups, i.e., pentyl, ethoxyethyl, and ethylthioethyl, the ILs with the ethylthioethyl group featured a higher work of adhesion than the respective ILs with the pentyl or ethoxyethyl group. The values of the surface tensions of the ILs followed the same trend for the three functional groups. Based on the Fowkes theory, it was found that the larger surface tensions of the ILs with the ethylthioethyl group compared with pentyl and ethoxyethyl groups were because of the increase in both dispersive and nondispersive components. The quantum chemistry calculations of the ions showed a larger dipole moment and mean polarizability for the cations with the ethylthioethyl group as compared with the pentyl and ethoxyethyl groups. This is consistent with the analysis results of the surface tensions based on the Fowkes theory. By comparing other anions, the dispersive component of the surface tension of the ILs with bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide was large, which is attributed to the small dipole moment of the anion.

Solvent Role of Ionic Liquids in Fundamental Chemical Reaction Dynamics Analyzed by Time-Resolved Spectroscopy

Ionic liquids (ILs), which are used as solvents for chemical reactions, are different from conventional organic solvents owing to their designability. Physicochemical parameters of the ILs, such as polarity and viscosity, that affect chemical equilibria and reaction kinetics can be tuned by changing the combination of anions and cations or by varying the lengths of the alkyl chains present in the cations. We were interested in knowing how these physicochemical parameters affect fundamental chemical reactions in ILs. Therefore, in this personal account, we investigate our recent work on two different photochemical reactions in ILs, namely excited-state intramolecular proton transfer of hydroxyflavone and photodissociation of aminodisulfide, using time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. Interestingly, the roles of the ILs in these chemical reactions are quite different. The effect of the cationic species of the ILs (i. e., the head groups and number of alkyl carbons) on the solvation environment upon photoexcitation and reaction rate are discussed.

Long-Lived Weak Ion Pairs in Ionic Liquids: An Insight from All-Atom Molecular Dynamics Simulations

The microstructure and local dynamics of ions in room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have drawn a lot of attention due to their extensive potential applications in numerous fields. It is well-known that the widely used definitions of ion pairs (IPs) cannot reflect the full picture of RTILs. In this study, we find a universal residence time (τ_MR), which is regardless of the number of counterions in the first solvation shell in RTILs. Inspired by this, we propose a weak IP (WIP) model from a spatiotemporal perspective and demonstrate that the WIPs are long-lived and that their lifetimes obey a log-normal distribution, which is different from the literature. In addition, the electrostatic interactions are the main factors in the formation of WIPs, and the reorientations of ions are vital to the ruptures of WIPs. This research provides a new perspective for understanding the microstructural and dynamical properties of RTILs.

Dielectric relaxation and dielectric decrement in ionic acetamide deep eutectic solvents: Spectral decomposition and comparison with experiments

Frequency-dependent dielectric relaxation in three deep eutectic solvents (DESs), (acetamide+LiClO4/NO3/Br), was investigated in the temperature range, 329 ≤ T/K ≤ 358, via molecular dynamics simulations. Subsequently, decomposition of the real and the imaginary components of the simulated dielectric spectra was carried out to separate the rotational (dipole-dipole), translational (ion-ion), and ro-translational (dipole-ion) contributions. The dipolar contribution, as expected, was found to dominate all the frequency-dependent dielectric spectra over the entire frequency regime, while the other two components together made tiny contributions only. The translational (ion-ion) and the cross ro-translational contributions appeared in the THz regime in contrast to the viscosity-dependent dipolar relaxations that dominated the MHz-GHz frequency window. Our simulations predicted, in agreement with experiments, anion-dependent decrement of the static dielectric constant (ɛs ∼ 20 to 30) for acetamide (ɛs ∼ 66) in these ionic DESs. Simulated dipole-correlations (Kirkwood g factor) indicated significant orientational frustrations. The frustrated orientational structure was found to be associated with the anion-dependent damage of the acetamide H-bond network. Single dipole reorientation time distributions suggested slowed down acetamide rotations but did not indicate presence of any "rotationally frozen" molecule. The dielectric decrement is, therefore, largely static in origin. This provides a new insight into the ion dependence of the dielectric behavior of these ionic DESs. A good agreement between the simulated and the experimental timescales was also noticed.

Electrochemical Properties and Local Structure of the TEMPO/TEMPO+ Redox Pair in Ionic Liquids

Redox-active organic species play an important role in catalysis, energy storage, and biotechnology. One of the representatives is the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) radical, used as a mediator in organic synthesis and considered a safe alternative to heavy metals. In order to develop a TEMPO-based system with well-controlled electrochemical and catalytic properties, a reaction medium should be carefully chosen. Being highly conductive, stable, and low flammability fluids, ionic liquids (ILs) seem to be promising solvents with easily adjustable physical and solvation properties. In this work, we give an insight into the local structure of ILs around TEMPO and its oxidized form, TEMPO⁺, underlining striking differences in the solvation of these two species. The analysis is coupled with a study of thermodynamics and kinetics of oxidation in the frame of Marcus theory. Our systematic investigation includes imidazolium, pyrrolydinium, and phosphonium families combined with anions of different size, polarity, and flexibility, opting to provide a clear and comprehensive picture of the impact of the nature of IL ions on the behavior of radical/cation redox pairs. The obtained results will help to explain experimentally observed effects and to rationalize the design of TEMPO/IL systems.

Physical Properties and Low-Frequency Polarizability Anisotropy and Dipole Responses of Phosphonium Bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide Ionic Liquids with Pentyl, Ethoxyethyl, or 2-(Ethylthio)ethyl Group

This study compared the physical properties, e.g., glass transition temperature, melting point, viscosity, density, surface tension, and electrical conductivity, and the low-frequency spectra under 200 cm^-1 of three synthesized ionic liquids (ILs), triethylpentylphosphonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide ([P₂₂₂₅][NF₂]), ethoxyethyltriethylphosphonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide ([P_222(2O2)][NF₂]), and triethyl[2-(ethylthio)ethyl]phosphonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide ([P_222(2S2)][NF₂]), at various temperatures using femtosecond Raman-induced Kerr effect spectroscopy (fs-RIKES) and terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). The [P_222(2S2)][NF₂] had the highest viscosity and glass transition temperature, whereas the [P_222(2O2)][NF₂] had the lowest. Among the three ILs, the [P_222(2S2)][NF₂] had the highest density and surface tension, and the [P_222(2O2)][NF₂] had the highest electrical conductivity. The RIKES and THz-TDS spectral line shapes for the three ILs varied significantly. For the [P₂₂₂₅][NF₂], molecular dynamics simulations successfully reproduced the line shapes of the experimental spectra and indicated that the RIKES spectrum was mainly due to the cation and cross-term and their rotational motions, whereas the THz-TDS spectrum was mainly due to the anion and its translational motion. This shows that it is desirable to utilize both fs-RIKES and THz-TDS methods to reveal molecular motions at the low-frequency domain. The [P_222(2S2)][NF₂] had higher frequency peaks and broader bands in the low-frequency spectra via fs-RIKES and THz-TDS than those for the [P₂₂₂₅][NF₂] and [P_222(2O2)][NF₂].

Simulations of electric field gradient fluctuations and dynamics around sodium ions in ionic liquids

The T₁ relaxation time measured in nuclear magnetic resonance experiments contains information about electric field gradient (EFG) fluctuations around a nucleus, but computer simulations are typically required to interpret the underlying dynamics. This study uses classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and quantum chemical calculations, to investigate EFG fluctuations around a Na⁺ ion dissolved in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl 3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [Im₂₁][BF₄], to provide a framework for future interpretation of NMR experiments. Our calculations demonstrate that the Sternheimer approximation holds for Na⁺ in [Im₂₁][BF₄], and the anti-shielding coefficient is comparable to its value in water. EFG correlation functions, C_EFG(t), calculated using quantum mechanical methods or from force field charges are roughly equivalent after 200 fs, supporting the use of classical MD for estimating T₁ times of monatomic ions in this ionic liquid. The EFG dynamics are strongly bi-modal, with 75%-90% of the de-correlation attributable to inertial solvent motion and the remainder to a highly distributed diffusional processes. Integral relaxation times, ⟨τ_EFG⟩, were found to deviate from hydrodynamic predictions and were non-linearly coupled to solvent viscosity. Further investigation showed that Na⁺ is solvated by four tetrahedrally arranged [BF₄]^- anions and directly coordinated by ∼6 fluorine atoms. Exchange of [BF₄]^- anions is rare on the 25-50 ns timescale and suggests that motion of solvent-shell [BF₄]^- is the primary mechanism for the EFG fluctuations. Different couplings of [BF₄]^- translational and rotational diffusion to viscosity are shown to be the source of the non-hydrodynamic scaling of ⟨τ_EFG⟩.

Molecular Dynamics with Conformationally Dependent, Distributed Charges

Accounting for geometry-induced changes in the electronic distribution in molecular simulation is important for capturing effects such as charge flow, charge anisotropy, and polarization. Multipolar force fields have demonstrated their ability to correctly represent chemically significant features such as anisotropy and sigma holes. It has also been shown that off-center point charges offer a compact alternative with similar accuracy. Here, it is demonstrated that allowing relocation of charges within a minimally distributed charge model (MDCM) with respect to their reference atoms is a viable route to capture changes in the molecular charge distribution depending on geometry, i.e., intramolecular polarization. The approach, referred to as "flexible MDCM" (fMDCM), is validated on a number of small molecules and provides accuracies in the electrostatic potential (ESP) of 0.5 kcal/mol on average compared with reference data from electronic structure calculations, whereas MDCM and point charges have root mean squared errors of a factor of 2 to 5 higher. In addition, MD simulations in the NVE ensemble using fMDCM for a box of flexible water molecules with periodic boundary conditions show a width of 0.1 kcal/mol for the fluctuation around the mean at 300 K on the 10 ns time scale. For water, the equilibrium valence angle in the gas phase is found to increase by 2° for simulations in the condensed phase which is consistent with experiment. The accuracy in capturing the geometry dependence of the ESP together with the long-time stability in energy conserving simulations makes fMDCM a promising tool to introduce advanced electrostatics into atomistic simulations.

Molecular Simulation-Guided Spectroscopy of Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids and Effects of Methylation on Ion-Cage and -Pair Dynamics

Classical molecular dynamics simulations were performed to assess an atomistic interpretation of the ion-probe structural interactions in two typical ionic liquids (ILs), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [BMIm][NTf₂] and 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [BDimIm][NTf₂] through computational ultrafast spectroscopy. The nitrile stretching vibrations of the thiocyanate anion, [SCN]^-, serve as the local mode of the ultrafast system dynamics within the imidazolium-based ionic liquid environment. The wavelet transform of classical trajectories determines the time-varying fluctuating frequencies and the stretch spectral signatures of SCN^- in the normalized distribution. However, computational modeling of the two-dimensional (2D) spectra from the wavelet-derived vibrational frequencies yields time evolution of the local molecular structure along with the varied time-dependent dynamics of the spectral diffusion process. We calculated the frequency-frequency correlation functions (FFCFs), time correlations associated with the ion-pair and -cage dynamics, and mean square displacements as a function of time, depicting diffusive dynamics. The calculated results based on the pair correlation functions and the distribution of atomic density suggest that the hydrogen and methylated carbon at the two-position of the imidazolium ring of [BMIm] and [BDimIm] cations, respectively, strongly interact with the probe through the N of the thiocyanate anion rather than the S atom. The center-of-mass center-of-mass (COM-COM) cation-probe radial distribution functions (RDFs) in conjunction with the site-specific structural analysis further reveal well-structured interactions of the thiocyanate ion and [BMIm]⁺ cation rather than the [BDimIm] cation. In contrast, the anion-probe COM-COM RDFs depict weak interactive associations within the vibrational probe [SCN]^- and [NTf₂]^- ions. Methylation at the two-position of the imidazolium ring predicts slower structural reorganization and breaking and reformation dynamics of the ion pairs and cages within the ionic liquid framework.

Multiple Ensembles of the Hydrogen-bonded Network in Ethylammonium Nitrate versus Water from Vibrational Spectral Dynamics of SCN- Probe

We performed classical molecular dynamics simulations to monitor the structural interactions and ultrafast dynamical and spectral response in the protic ionic liquid, ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) and water using the nitrile stretching mode of thiocyanate ion (SCN-) as the vibrational probe. The normalized stretch frequency distribution of nitrile stretch of SCN- attains an asymmetric shape in EAN, indicating the existence of more than one hydrogen-bonding environment in EAN. We computed the 2D IR spectrum from classical trajectories, applying the response function formalism. Spectral diffusion dynamics in EAN undergo an initial rattling of the SCN - inside the local ion-cage occurring at a timescale of 0.10 ps, followed by the breakup of the ion-cage activating molecular diffusion at 7.86 ps timescale. In contrast, the dynamics of structural reorganization occur at a timescale of 0.58 ps in H 2 O. Hence, the time dependence of the frequency-frequency correlation function decay hints at the local molecular structure and ultrafast ion dynamics of the SCN - probe. The loss of frequency correlation read from the peak shape changes in the 2D correlation spectrum as a function of waiting time is faster in H 2 O than in EAN due to the enhanced structural ordering and higher viscosity of the latter. We provide an atomic-level interpretation of the solvation environment around SCN - in EAN and water, which indicates the multiple ensembles of the hydrogen bond network in EAN.

Structure, Organization, and Heterogeneity of Water-Containing Deep Eutectic Solvents

The spectroscopy and structural dynamics of a deep eutectic mixture (KSCN/acetamide) with varying water content is investigated from 2D IR (with the C-N stretch vibration of the SCN^- anions as the reporter) and THz spectroscopy. Molecular dynamics simulations correctly describe the nontrivial dependence of both spectroscopic signatures depending on water content. For the 2D IR spectra, the MD simulations relate the steep increase in the cross-relaxation rate at high water content to the parallel alignment of packed SCN^- anions. Conversely, the nonlinear increase of the THz absorption with increasing water content is mainly attributed to the formation of larger water clusters. The results demonstrate that a combination of structure-sensitive spectroscopies and molecular dynamics simulations provides molecular-level insights into the emergence of heterogeneity of such mixtures by modulating their composition.

Reorganization Energy of Electron Transfer in Ionic Liquids

Bandshape analysis of charge-transfer optical bands in room-temperature ionic liquids (ILs) was performed to extract the reorganization energy of electron transfer. Remarkably, the reorganization energies in ILs are close to those in cyclohexane. This result runs against common wisdom in the field since conducting ILs, which are characterized by an infinite static dielectric constant, and nonpolar cyclohexane fall to the opposite ends of the polarity scale based on their dielectric constants. Theoretical calculations employing structure factors of ILs from molecular dynamics simulations support the low values of the reorganization energy. Standard dielectric arguments do not apply to solvation in ILs, and nonergodic reorganization energies are required for a quantitative analysis.

Choline chloride and ethylene glycol based deep eutectic solvent (DES) versus hydroxyl functionalized room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs): assessing the differences in microscopic behaviour between the DES and RTILs

With the aim of understanding the differences in the behavior of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) in terms of their structure, dynamics, and intra- and intermolecular interactions, three different ILs and one DES having similar functionalities (hydroxyl) have been investigated by using both ensembled average and single-molecule spectroscopic techniques. Specifically, for this purpose, a choline chloride based DES (ethaline) and three hydroxyl functionalized ILs (1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([OHEMIM][NTF₂]), N-(2-hydroxyl ethyl)-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([OHEMPy][NTf₂]), and N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-N,N-dimethylpropan-1-aminium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([OHC3CH][NTf₂])) are employed and investigated by EPR, time-resolved fluorescence, NMR and FCS studies. Estimation of polarity through EPR spectroscopy has revealed that the hydroxyl ILs employed in these studies are hyper-polar (close to water) in nature, whereas the polarity of the DES is found to be close to those of aliphatic polyhydroxy-alcohols. Interestingly, both time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy and FCS studies on these systems have suggested that the hydroxyl ILs are more dynamically heterogeneous than the DES. More interestingly, PFG-NMR measurements have indicated that the fluid structure of ethaline is relatively more associated as compared to those of the ILs despite the fact that all the cations have the same hydroxyl functionalities. All these investigations have essentially demonstrated that, despite having similar functionalities, both the DES and hydroxyl ILs employed in the present study exhibit microscopic behaviours that are significantly different from each other, indicating the interplay of various intermolecular interactions within the constituent species in governing the behaviours of these solvent systems.

Experimental measurement and prediction of ionic liquid ionisation energies

Ionic liquid (IL) valence electronic structure provides key descriptors for understanding and predicting IL properties. The ionisation energies of 60 ILs are measured and the most readily ionised valence state of each IL (the highest occupied molecular orbital, HOMO) is identified using a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and synchrotron resonant XPS. A structurally diverse range of cations and anions were studied. The cation gave rise to the HOMO for nine of the 60 ILs presented here, meaning it is energetically more favourable to remove an electron from the cation than the anion. The influence of the cation on the anion electronic structure (and vice versa) were established; the electrostatic effects are well understood and demonstrated to be consistently predictable. We used this knowledge to make predictions of both ionisation energy and HOMO identity for a further 516 ILs, providing a very valuable dataset for benchmarking electronic structure calculations and enabling the development of models linking experimental valence electronic structure descriptors to other IL properties, e.g. electrochemical stability. Furthermore, we provide design rules for the prediction of the electronic structure of ILs.

Coarse-grained simulations of ionic liquid materials: from monomeric ionic liquids to ionic liquid crystals and polymeric ionic liquids

Ionic liquid (IL) materials are promising electrolytes with striking physicochemical properties for energy and environmental applications. Heterogeneous structures and transport quantities of monomeric and polymeric ILs are intrinsically intercorrelated and span multiple spatiotemporal scales, which is more feasible for coarse-grained (CG) simulations than atomistic modelling. Herein we constructed a novel CG model for ethyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate ILs with varied cation alkyl chains ranging from C₂ to C₂₀, and the interaction parameters were validated against representative static and dynamic properties that were obtained from atomistic reference simulations and experimental characterizations at relevant thermodynamic states. This CG model was extended to study thermotropic phase behaviors of monomeric ILs and to explore ion association structures and ion transport quantities in polymeric ILs with different architectures. A systematic analysis of structural and dynamical quantities identifies an evolution of liquid morphology from homogeneous to nanosegregated structures and then a smectic mesomorphism via a gradual lengthening of cation alkyl chains, and thereafter a distinct structural transition characterized by a monotonic decrease in orientational and translational order parameters in a sequential heating cascade. Backbone and pendant polymeric ILs exhibit evident anion association structures with cation monomers and polymer chains, and striking intra- and interchain coordinations between cation monomers owing to an intrinsic polymer architecture effect. Such a peculiar ion pairing association leads to a progressive increase in anion intrachain hopping probabilities, and a concomitant decrease in anion interchain hopping events with a gradual lengthening of polymeric ILs. The anion diffusivities in polymeric ILs are intrinsically correlated with ion pairing association lifetimes and ion structural relaxation times via a universal power law correlation D ∼ τ^-1, irrespective of polymer architectures.

Phase Transitions and Electrochemical Properties of Ionic Liquids and Ionic Liquid-Solvent Mixtures

Recent advances in studies of ionic liquids (IL) and ionic liquid-solvent mixtures are reviewed. Selected experimental, simulation, and theoretical results for electrochemical, thermodynamical, and structural properties of IL and IL-solvent mixtures are described. Special attention is paid to phenomena that are not predicted by the classical theories of the electrical double layer or disagree strongly with these theories. We focus on structural properties, especially on distribution of ions near electrodes, on electrical double layer capacitance, on effects of confinement, including decay length of a dissjoining pressure between confinig plates, and on demixing phase transition. In particular, effects of the demixing phase transition on electrochemical properties of ionic liquid-solvent mixtures for different degrees of confinement are presented.

Relationship between the Relaxation of Ionic Liquid Structural Motifs and That of the Shear Viscosity

In a set of recent articles, we have highlighted that friction is highly inhomogeneous in a typical ionic liquid (IL) with charge networks that are stiff and charge-depleted regions that are soft. This has consequences not only for the dynamics of ILs but also for the transport properties of solutes dissolved in them. In this article, we explore whether the family of alkylimidazolium ILs coupled with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (with similar Coulombic interactions but different alkyl tails), when dynamically “equalized” by having a similar shear viscosity, display q-dependent structural relaxation time scales that are the same across the family. Our results show that this is not the case, and in fact, the relaxation of in-network charge alternation appears to be significantly affected by the presence of separate polar and apolar domains. However, we also find that if one was to assign weight factors to the relaxation of the structural motifs, charge alternation always contributes about the same amount (between 62.1 and 66.3%) across systems to the running integral of the stress tensor correlation function from which the shear viscosity is derived. Adjacency correlations between positive and negative moieties also contribute an identical amount if a prepeak is not present (about 38%) and a slightly smaller amount (about 28%) when intermediate range order exists. The prepeak only contributes about 6% to viscoelastic relaxation, highlighting that the dynamics of the smaller scale motifs is the most important.

Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer Reaction and Ground-State Hole Dynamics of 4'-N,N-Dialkylamino-3-hydroxyflavone in Ionic Liquids Studied by Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

The excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) of 4'-N,N-dialkylamino-3-hydroxyflavone (C_nHF) having different alkyl chain lengths (ethyl, butyl, and octyl chains) was investigated in ionic liquids (ILs) by steady-state fluorescence and transient absorption spectroscopy. Upon photoexcitation, C_nHF underwent ESIPT from the normal form to the tautomer form, and dual emissions from both states were detected. For C₄HF and C₈HF, the tautomerization yields determined from the fluorescence intensity ratios increased with the increasing number of alkyl chain carbon atoms in the cation and on reducing the excitation wavelength as reported for C₂HF [K. Suda et al., J. Phys. Chem. B. 117, 12567 (2013)]. The transient absorption spectra of C_nHF were measured at excitation wavelengths of 360, 400, and 450 nm. The ESIPT rate determined from the induced emission of the tautomer was correlated with the tautomerization yield for C₂HF and C₄HF. In addition, the recovery of the ground-state bleach was found to be strongly dependent on the excitation wavelength. This result indicates that the solvated state of the molecule before photoexcitation is dependent on the excitation wavelengths. The time constant for the ground-state relaxation was slower than that for the excited state.

Designed a novel EP + GO/ZRC + GO coating with bilayered structure for enhancing corrosion resistance of steel substrate

The study aimed to provide an effective way to combine the advantages of both the zinc-rich epoxy coating and the graphene-based coating. Herein, we introduce ZRC + GO/EP + GO and EP + GO/ZRC + GO coatings with bilayered structure. In addition, the bilayered ZRC, ZRC + GO and EP + GO coatings were also fabricated to comparatively investigate the anticorrosion mechanisms of the coatings. In order to obtain better dispersion of GO in waterborne coatings, ionic liquid (1-aminoethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide) was successively grafted on GO, which was confirmed by XPS, Raman and FT-IR results. The results obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and salt spray test proved that the as-prepared EP + GO/ZRC + GO coating presented superior corrosion protection which was derived from the synergistic effect of barrier property and cathodic protection endowed by the special bilayered structure of the coating. Besides, SEM, EDS and XRD results of the coating-exfoliated steel substrates also revealed the steel substrate coated by EP + GO/ZRC + GO was not obviously corroded at the end of the immersion.

Understanding the Photoexcitation of Room Temperature Ionic Liquids

Photoexcitation of (neat) room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) leads to the observation of transient species that are reminiscent of the composition of the RTILs themselves. In this minireview, we summarize state-of-the-art in the understanding of the underlying elementary processes. By varying the anion or cation, one aim is to generally predict radiation-induced chemistry and physics of RTILs. One major task is to address the fate of excess electrons (and holes) after photoexcitation, which implies an overview of various formation mechanisms considering structural and dynamical aspects. Therefore, transient studies on time scales from femtoseconds to microseconds can greatly help to elucidate the most relevant steps after photoexcitation. Sometimes, radiation may eventually result in destruction of the RTILs making photostability another important issue to be discussed. Finally, characteristic heterogeneities can be associated with specific physicochemical properties. Influencing these properties by adding conventional solvents, like water, can open a wide field of application, which is briefly summarized.

Voronoi Polyhedra as a Tool for the Characterization of Inhomogeneous Distribution in 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Cation-Based Ionic Liquids

The inhomogeneity distribution in four imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) containing the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (C₄mim) cation, coupled with tetrafluoroborate (BF₄), hexafluorophosphate (PF₆), bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (TFSA), and trifluoromethanesulfonate (TfO) anions, was characterized using Voronoi polyhedra. For this purpose, molecular dynamic simulations have been performed on the isothermal-isobaric (NpT) ensemble. We checked the ability of the potential models to reproduce the experimental density, heat of vaporization, and transport properties (diffusion and viscosity) of these ionic liquids. The inhomogeneity distribution of ions around the ring, methyl, and butyl chain terminal hydrogen atoms of the C₄mim cation was investigated by means of Voronoi polyhedra analysis. For this purpose, the position of the C₄mim cation was described successively by the ring, methyl, and butyl chain terminal hydrogen atoms, while that of the anions was described by their F or O atom. We calculated the Voronoi polyhedra distributions of the volume, the density, and the asphericity parameters as well as that of the radius of the spherical intermolecular voids. We carried out the analysis in two steps. In the first step, both ions were taken into account. The calculated distributions gave information on the neighboring ions around a reference one. In the second step, to distinguish between like and oppositely charged ions and then to get information on the inhomogeneity distribution of the like ions, we repeated the same calculations on the same sample configurations and removed one of the ions and considered only the other one. Detailed analysis of these distributions has revealed that the ring hydrogen atoms are mainly solvated by the anions, while the methyl and butyl terminal H atoms are surrounded by like atoms. The extent of this inhomogeneity was assessed by calculating the cluster size distribution that shows that the dimers are the most abundant ones.

Probing Liquid Interfaces with Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids Using the Excited-State Dynamics of a Cationic Dye

Interfaces with room-temperature ionic liquids (ILs) play key roles in many applications of these solvents, but our understanding of their properties is still limited. We investigate how the addition of ILs in the aqueous subphase affects the adsorption of the cationic dye malachite green at the dodecane/water interface using stationary and time-resolved surface second harmonic generation. We find that the interfacial concentration of malachite green depends crucially on the nature of both anionic and cationic constituents. This concentration reports on the overall charge of the interface, which itself depends on the relative interfacial affinity of the ions. Our results reveal that the addition of ILs to the aqueous subphase has similar effects to the addition of conventional salts. However, the IL cations have a significantly higher propensity to adsorb than small inorganic cations. Furthermore, the IL constituents show a synergistic effect, as the interfacial concentration of each of them also depends on the interfacial affinity of the other.

The ENUF method-Ewald summation based on nonuniform fast Fourier transform: Implementation, parallelization, and application

Computer simulations of model systems are widely used to explore striking phenomena in promising applications spanning from physics, chemistry, biology, to materials science and engineering. The long range electrostatic interactions between charged particles constitute a prominent factor in determining structures and states of model systems. How to efficiently calculate electrostatic interactions in simulation systems subjected to partial or full periodic boundary conditions has been a grand challenging task. In the past decades, a large variety of computational schemes has been proposed, among which the Ewald summation method is the most reliable route to accurately deal with electrostatic interactions between charged particles in simulation systems. In addition, extensive efforts have been done to improve computational efficiencies of the Ewald summation based methods. Representative examples are approaches based on cutoffs, reaction fields, multi-poles, multi-grids, and particle-mesh schemes. We sketched an ENUF method, an abbreviation for the Ewald summation method based on the nonuniform fast Fourier transform technique, and have implemented this method in particle-based simulation packages to calculate electrostatic energies and forces at micro- and mesoscopic levels. Extensive computational studies of conformational properties of polyelectrolytes, dendrimer-membrane complexes, and ionic fluids demonstrated that the ENUF method and its derivatives conserve both energy and momentum to floating point accuracy, and exhibit a computational complexity of O N log N with optimal physical parameters. These ENUF based methods are attractive alternatives in molecular simulations where high accuracy and efficiency of simulation methods are needed to accelerate calculations of electrostatic interactions at extended spatiotemporal scales.

Microstructural and Dynamical Heterogeneities in Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a special category of molten salts solely composed of ions with varied molecular symmetry and charge delocalization. The versatility in combining varied cation-anion moieties and in functionalizing ions with different atoms and molecular groups contributes to their peculiar interactions ranging from weak isotropic associations to strong, specific, and anisotropic forces. A delicate interplay among intra- and intermolecular interactions facilitates the formation of heterogeneous microstructures and liquid morphologies, which further contributes to their striking dynamical properties. Microstructural and dynamical heterogeneities of ILs lead to their multifaceted properties described by an inherent designer feature, which makes ILs important candidates for novel solvents, electrolytes, and functional materials in academia and industrial applications. Due to a massive number of combinations of ion pairs with ion species having distinct molecular structures and IL mixtures containing varied molecular solvents, a comprehensive understanding of their hierarchical structural and dynamical quantities is of great significance for a rational selection of ILs with appropriate properties and thereafter advancing their macroscopic functionalities in applications. In this review, we comprehensively trace recent advances in understanding delicate interplay of strong and weak interactions that underpin their complex phase behaviors with a particular emphasis on understanding heterogeneous microstructures and dynamics of ILs in bulk liquids, in mixtures with cosolvents, and in interfacial regions.

The Effect of Phenyl Substitutions on Microstructures and Dynamics of Tetraalkylphosphonium Bis(trifluoro- methylsulfonyl)imide Ionic Liquids

Extensive atomistic simulations demonstrated that a gradual substitution of hexyl chains with phenyl groups in tetraalkylphosphonium cations results in remarkable changes in hydrogen bonding interactions, liquid structures and scattering structural functions, and rotational dynamics of hexyl chains and phenyl groups in tetraalkylphosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquids. Hydrogen donor sites in hexyl chains present competitive characteristics with those in phenyl groups in coordinating anions, as well as their continuous and intermittent hydrogen bonding dynamics. Cation-cation and anion-anion spatial correlations show concomitant shift to short distances with decreased peak intensities with variations of cation structures, whereas cation-anion correlations have a distinct shift to large radial distances due to decreased associations of anions with neighboring cations. These microstructural changes are qualitatively manifested in shifts of prominent peaks for prevalent charge alternations and adjacency correlations between ion species in scattering structural functions. Meanwhile, rotational dynamics of hexyl chains speed up, which, in turn, slow down rotations of phenyl groups, whereas anions exhibit imperceptible changes in their rotational dynamics. These computational results are intrinsically correlated with conformational flexibilities, molecular sizes, and steric hindrance effects of phenyl groups in comparison with hexyl chains, and constrained distributions of anions around cations in heterogeneous ionic environments.

Organoboron Ionic Liquids as Extractants for Distillation Process of Binary Ethanol + Water Mixtures

Aminoethers of boric acid, which are organoboron ionic liquids, were synthesized by using boric acid, triethanolamine, and triethylene glycol/diethylene glycol. Due to the formation of intermolecular complexes of borates, the structure of aminoethers of boric acid contains ion pairs separated in space, giving these compounds the properties inherent to ionic liquids. It is established that the thermal stability of aminoethers under normal atmospheric conditions increases with an increase in the size of the glycol. According to measurements of fast scanning calorimetry, density, dynamic viscosity, and electrical conductivity, water is involved in the structural organization of aminoethers of boric acid. The impact of the most thermostable organoboron ionic liquids on the phase equilibrium conditions of the vapor–liquid azeotropic ethanol–water mixture is studied. It is shown that the presence of these substances leads to increase in the relative volatility of ethanol. In general, the magnitude of this effect is at the level shown by imidazole ionic liquids, which provide high selectivity in the separation of aqueous alcohol solutions. A large separation factor, high resistance to thermal oxidative degradation processes, accompanied by low cost start reagents, make aminoethers of boric acid on the basis of triethylene glycol a potentially effective extractant for the extractive distillation of water–alcohol mixtures.

Controlling the Dynamics of Ionic Liquid Thin Films via Multilayer Surface Functionalization

The structural dynamics of planar thin films of an ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BmimNTf₂) as a function of surface charge density and thickness were investigated using two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectroscopy. The films were made by spin coating a methanol solution of the IL on silica substrates that were functionalized with alkyl chains containing head groups that mimic the IL cation. The thicknesses of the ionic liquid films ranged from ∼50 to ∼250 nm. The dynamics of the films are slower than those in the bulk IL, becoming increasingly slow as the films become thinner. Control of the dynamics of the IL films can be achieved by adjusting the charge density on substrates through multilayer network surface functionalization. The charge density of the surface (number of positively charged groups in the network bound to the surface per unit area) is controlled by the duration of the functionalization reaction. As the charge density is increased, the IL dynamics become slower. For comparison, the surface was functionalized with three different neutral groups. Dynamics of the IL films on the functionalized neutral surfaces are faster than on any of the ionic surfaces but still slower than the bulk IL, even for the thickest films. These results can have implications in applications that employ ILs that have electrodes, such as batteries, as the electrode surface charge density will influence properties like diffusion close to the surface.

Ultrafast vibrational dynamics of a trigonal planar anionic probe in ionic liquids (ILs): A two-dimensional infrared (2DIR) spectroscopic investigation

A major impediment limiting the widespread application of ionic liquids (ILs) is their high shear viscosity. Incorporation of a tricyanomethanide (TCM^-) anion in ILs leads to low shear viscosity and improvement of several characteristics suitable for large scale applications. However, properties including interactions of TCM^- with the local environment and dynamics of TCM^- have not been thoroughly investigated. Herein, we have studied the ultrafast dynamics of TCM^- in several imidazolium ILs using linear IR and two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy techniques. The spectral diffusion dynamics of the CN stretching modes of TCM^- in all ILs exhibit a nonexponential behavior with a short time component of ∼2 ps and a long time component spanning ∼9 ps to 14 ps. The TCM^- vibrational probe reports a significantly faster relaxation of ILs compared to those observed previously using linear vibrational probes, such as thiocyanate and selenocyanate. Our results indicate a rapid relaxation of the local ion-cage structure embedding the vibrational probe in the ILs. The faster relaxation suggests that the lifetime of the local ion-cage structure decreases in the presence of TCM^- in the ILs. Linear IR spectroscopic results show that the hydrogen-bonding interaction between TCM^- and imidazolium cations in ILs is much weaker. Shorter ion-cage lifetimes together with weaker hydrogen-bonding interactions account for the low shear viscosity of TCM^- based ILs compared to commonly used ILs. In addition, this study demonstrates that TCM^- can be used as a potential vibrational reporter to study the structure and dynamics of ILs and other molecular systems.
