Abstract
Breast cancer remains the most prevalent cancer among women worldwide, necessitating advancements in diagnostic methods. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into mammography has shown promise in enhancing diagnostic accuracy. However, understanding patient perspectives, particularly considering the psychological impact of breast cancer diagnoses, is crucial. This narrative review synthesizes literature from 2000 to 2023 to examine breast cancer patients' attitudes towards AI in breast imaging, focusing on trust, acceptance, and demographic influences on these views. Methodologically, we employed a systematic literature search across databases such as PubMed, Embase, Medline, and Scopus, selecting studies that provided insights into patients' perceptions of AI in diagnostics. Our review included a sample of seven key studies after rigorous screening, reflecting varied patient trust and acceptance levels towards AI. Overall, we found a clear preference among patients for AI to augment rather than replace the diagnostic process, emphasizing the necessity of radiologists' expertise in conjunction with AI to enhance decision-making accuracy. This paper highlights the importance of aligning AI implementation in clinical settings with patient needs and expectations, emphasizing the need for human interaction in healthcare. Our findings advocate for a model where AI augments the diagnostic process, underlining the necessity for educational efforts to mitigate concerns and enhance patient trust in AI-enhanced diagnostics.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Autism is a neuro-developmental condition which affects the social-emotional skills, behaviour, language, communication skills and flexibility of thoughts of an individual and their sensory processing. This can result in Autistic service users finding it difficult to navigate current healthcare provision and cope with the unpredictable environment. This paper explores the experiences of parents of Autistic children when attending the diagnostic imaging department for an X-ray examination. METHODS A cross sectional, mixed methods approach was adopted and the initial phase consisting of an online survey for parents to complete is the subject of this paper. The quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics and cross comparison between questions was also completed. Thematic analysis was taken to analyse the data from the two open questions at the end of the survey. RESULTS The online survey results are presented in this paper under four key themes; waiting times and environment, forms of communication, lack of understanding of staff regarding Autism and preparation for the X-ray examination. CONCLUSION The overall rating of the parents' experience whilst in the X-ray/diagnostic imaging department was positive, however there are several areas which received low scores which need further attention. These were waiting areas, waiting times, staff development and patient preparation. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE The development of more inclusive waiting areas is needed, more effective lines of communication between staff to expedite the patient journey where possible, staff development of both radiographers and also support staff and the review of design of more accessible and inclusive patient information.

Abstract
Access to medical imaging is pivotal in healthcare, playing a crucial role in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of diseases. However, disparities persist in this scenario, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities, racial and ethnic minorities, and individuals facing linguistic or cultural barriers. This paper critically assesses methods to mitigate these disparities, with a focus on breast cancer screening. We underscore scientific mobility as a vital tool for radiologists to advocate for healthcare policy changes: it not only enhances diversity and cultural competence within the radiology community but also fosters international cooperation and knowledge exchange among healthcare institutions. Efforts to ensure cultural competency among radiologists are discussed, including ongoing cultural education, sensitivity training, and workforce diversification. These initiatives are key to improving patient communication and reducing healthcare disparities. This paper also highlights the crucial role of policy changes and legislation in promoting equal access to essential screening services like mammography. We explore the challenges and potential of teleradiology in improving access to medical imaging in remote and underserved areas. In the era of artificial intelligence, this paper emphasizes the necessity of validating its models across a spectrum of populations to prevent bias and achieve equitable healthcare outcomes. Finally, the importance of international collaboration is illustrated, showcasing its role in sharing insights and strategies to overcome global access barriers in medical imaging. Overall, this paper offers a comprehensive overview of the challenges related to disparities in medical imaging access and proposes actionable strategies to address these challenges, aiming for equitable healthcare delivery.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Autistic individuals may require medical imaging but they can face barriers that are related to lack of adjustments in their care. This study aims to explore and understand strategies currently used by Swiss radiographers to image autistic patients and to propose recommendations for clinical practice. METHODS The Swiss Ethics of the canton of Vaud committee approved the study. Data collection was gathered using a mixed method approach by an online survey and followed by selected interviews. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used to analyse the data. RESULTS A hundred completed responses to the survey were obtained and five individual interviews were conducted. Sixty participants reported having managed autistic patients. The main enablers identified were: the support from carers, adapting the behaviour of staff and customising communication. The main challenges were a lack of communication and the lack of knowledge about autism to appropriately manage the patient. Only five radiographers had received prior training in autism. CONCLUSION Medical imaging departments must develop protocols to overcome the lack of communication between services, radiographers, and autistic service users. The lack of radiographer knowledge about autism can impact autistic patient management, resulting in carers playing an important role during the examination. Customised education for radiographers about autism is needed. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE The development of a scheduling protocol for each imaging modality could improve communication with the patient. The organisation of the physical environment and the patient's preparation for the examination are critical to provide adequate imaging care. It is suggested that medical imaging professionals, autistic service users, and autism organisations collaborate to develop autism related guidelines for medical imaging examinations.

Abstract
Patient-centered care (PCC) and equity are two of the six core domains of quality health care, according to the Institute of Medicine. Exceptional imaging care requires radiology practices to provide patient-centered (i.e., respectful and responsive to individual patient preferences, needs, and values) and equitable (i.e., does not vary in quality on the basis of gender, ethnicity, geographic location, or socioeconomic status) care. Specific barriers that prevent the delivery of patient-centered equitable care include information gaps, breaches of trust, organizational medical culture, and financial incentives. Information gaps limit practitioners in understanding the lived experience of patients. Breaches of trust prevent patients from seeking needed medical care. Organizational medical cultures may not be centered around patient experiences. Financial incentives can impede practitioners' ability to spend the time and resources required to meet patient goals and needs. Intentional approaches that integrate core principles in both PCC and health equity are required to deliver high-quality patient-centered imaging care for diverse patient populations. The purpose of this AJR Expert Panel Narrative Review is to review the origins of the PCC movement in radiology, characterize connections between the PCC and health equity movements, and describe concrete examples of ways to foster patient-centered equitable care in radiology.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cultural competency and safety are essential components to consider in the provision of person-centred equitable healthcare. Therefore, student radiographers' learning should include the necessary knowledge, skill sets and competence to recognise the patient's unique characteristics to enable culturally competent and safe medical imaging services. Therefore, this study explored undergraduate and postgraduate diagnostic radiography students' perspectives on cultural competency and safety. METHODS A qualitative phenomenological design with a hermeneutic phenomenological approach was followed to explore student perspectives. Student radiographers (second and third-year undergraduate and first and second-year postgraduate) from the study site were purposively and conveniently recruited to participate in focus group interviews. Fifteen focus group interviews were conducted, recorded and transcribed verbatim before undergoing thematic analysis. RESULTS Thematic analysis identified two themes. Theme one centred around the cultural competence and safety learnt by student radiographers at university and the second theme cultural competence and safety learnt in workplace learning. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated the importance of cultural competence and safe practice in examining patients of different cultures. It highlights the importance of creating awareness among students of their own abilities and capabilities of cultural sensitivity and safe practice as part of their learning. Future health professionals should be empowered to address and respond to patients' unique needs in a competent, safe and professional manner to reduce health disparities. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Cultural competence and safety are integral to person-centred care. Including these concepts in radiography education is therefore vital to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Abstract
Disparities in screening mammography and barriers to accessing breast cancer screening are most prevalent among racial/ethnic minority and low-income women. The significant breast cancer mortality rates experienced in both Hispanic and African American populations are found to be connected to delayed screening. For these women to follow the screening guidelines outlined by the American College of Radiology and Society of Breast Imaging, they must successfully navigate existing barriers to screening. These barriers include differential access to care, language barriers, and lack of medical insurance. The COVID-19 Pandemic has worsened the barriers to breast cancer screening faced by these groups of women. These barriers need to be addressed or they may further exacerbate disparities.

Abstract
Background Emotional harm incidents in health care may result in lost trust and adverse outcomes. However, investigations of emotional harm in radiology departments remain lacking. Purpose To better understand contributors and clinical scenarios in which emotional harm can occur in radiology, to document incidences, and to develop preventative countermeasures. Materials and Methods A large tertiary hospital adverse event reporting system was retrospectively searched for submissions under the category of dignity and respect in radiology between December 2014 and December 2020. Submissions were assigned to one of 14 categories per a previously developed classification system. Root-cause analysis of events was performed with a focus on countermeasures for future prevention. The person experiencing emotional harm (patient or staff) was noted. Results Of all radiology-related submissions, 37 of 3032 (1.2%) identified 43 dignity and respect incidents: failure to be patient centered (n = 23; 54%), disrespectful communication (n = 16; 37%), privacy violation (n = 2; 5%), minimization of patient concerns (n = 1; 2%), and loss of property (n = 1; 2%). Failure to be patient centered (n = 23) was subcategorized into disregard for patient preference (12 of 23; 52%), delay in care (eight of 23; 35%), and ineffective communication (three of 23; 13%). Of the 43 incidents, 32 involved patients (74%) and 11 involved staff (26%). Emotional harm in staff was because of disrespectful communication from other staff (eight of 11; 73%). Seventy-three countermeasures were identified: staff communication training (n = 32; 44%), individual feedback (n = 18; 25%), system innovation (n = 16; 22%), improvement of existing communication processes (n = 3; 4%), process reminders (n = 3; 4%), and unclear (n = 1; 1%). Individual feedback and staff communication training that focused on active listening, asking for the patient's preferences, and closed-loop communication addressed 34 of the 43 incidents (79%). Conclusion Most emotional harm incidents were from disrespectful communication and failure to be patient centered. Providing training focused on active listening, asking for patient's preferences, and closed-loop communication would potentially prevent most of these incidents. © RSNA, 2021 See also the editorial by Bruno in this issue.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Autistic individuals undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations may face significant challenges, mainly due to sensory overload and MRI environment-related limitations. This study aimed to explore radiographers' perspectives and experiences regarding MRI scanning of autistic individuals. METHODS Data collection was achieved using a specifically designed mixed methods questionnaire on Qualtrics. The snowball technique was used. This UK-wide survey was electronically distributed by three main recruitment agencies between December 2020 and February 2021. RESULTS 130 valid responses were received. A lack of relevant training and knowledge related to autism was noted. Effective communication, optimisation and customisation of the MRI examination, and MRI environment adjustments facilitated the completion of a safe and effective MRI examination. Poor patient-radiographer communication, unavailability of Special Educational Needs (SEN) experts, lack of specialised radiographer training and lack of specific guidelines were identified as the main barriers to successful MRI examinations. CONCLUSION Although routine MRI safety and patient care rules will apply, MRI scanning of autistic individuals requires customisation and reasonable adjustments in communication, environment, and training of clinical teams. In addition, guidelines should be established to be used as a reference point to improve clinical practice. The adjustments proposed by radiographers were all consistent with the interventions in the wider literature. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE MRI practice for personalised care of autistic individuals should be aligned with current evidence, to customise communication and offer workflow and environmental adjustments. Formal training related to autism, integrated within radiography academic curricula and better co-ordination and communication of interdisciplinary teams would provide the necessary skill mix to deliver safe, high quality MRI scans with optimal experience for autistic service users and their carer(s).

Abstract
Transgender people have a gender identity that differs from their natal sex and experience many forms of discrimination, including within the health care field. Although transgender patients only comprise 0.6% of the adult US population, they frequently require imaging evaluation. Few published articles provide data-driven research on optimizing education of the radiology care team and delivery of inclusive and respectful imaging care to this vulnerable population; existing data suggest prior areas of success and prior areas of failure. Here, we offer specific recommendations on how radiology care team members can better serve transgender patients and begin generating much needed evidence-based best practices to improve their imaging health and care.

Abstract
Recent reports have highlighted disparities in breast cancer care related to patient diversity. Breast radiologists represent the face of breast imaging and are key players in advocating for patients to reduce these disparities. Diversity-related barriers for breast imaging patients, as they journey from screening to survivorship, include impediments to access and quality of care, gaps in communication, and lack of knowledge in both providers and patients. Potential strategies for overcoming these specific barriers include "culturally tailored" nurse navigators, mobile mammography, improved communication, patient and provider education, and breast radiologist involvement in advocacy efforts promoting diversity. As current trends in recommendations and guidelines for breast imaging include more numerous and advanced imaging modalities, it is important to acknowledge and address diversity-related disparities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience increased anxiety when undergoing medical imaging procedures for a variety of reasons including sensory overload, comprehension difficulty, and meeting unfamiliar people. There are several strategies that medical radiation technologists (MRTs) can apply to improve the imaging process. The purpose of this project was to work together with patients to develop educational modules and resources for MRTs on how to best support patients with IDD during medical imaging procedures. DEVELOPMENT PROCESS AND FINDINGS The project team used a four stage process to (1) determine the educational needs of MRTs around imaging procedures for people with IDD and (2) develop a series of online case-based video modules of challenges and improved practices with accompanying digital resources. First, the project team created and distributed a needs assessment survey to MRTs to identify their educational needs, experience, and interest in learning more about how to best support patients with IDD. The results from this needs assessment underscored that developing skills to better support patients with IDD was an area of interest and need amongst OAMRS members, which led to the formation of a working group whose goal was to identify priority topics and how to best teach these topics. Second, we conducted a focus group with adults with IDD, who had experience with imaging procedures, to ensure the lived experience of people with IDD was a pillar of the modules. Third, we developed a set of video scripts and educational slides, informed by the needs assessment with MRTs and the focus group with adults with IDD. The video scripts focused on four scenarios: (1) Waiting for an imaging procedure, (2) & (3) the imaging process (MRI and PET), and (4) the exit interview. Each of these videos focused on common practice errors made during these scenarios, followed by strategies to address those errors. The educational slides focused on: (1) an introduction to people with IDD (2) Communication and (3) Triggers and Strategies. The fourth and final phase focused on filming the teaching videos with actors with IDD and finalizing the educational slides. Together, the set of educational slides and videos formed the modules for MRTs that will be published online. LESSONS LEARNED Undertaking this process to develop educational modules for MRTs on working with people with IDD taught us that people with IDD have lived experiences which should inform the development of educational material; they must be treated as partners during this development process; and a partnered process takes time to carry out. CONCLUSION The process that was undertaken allowed the team to develop resources, which can be used by MRTs. Evaluation of the educational modules can inform further refinement and improvement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sexual and gender minority patients, and radiographers, experience several challenges that hinder realisation of their rights to equality and to a standard of living which is adequate for their well-being and health, in clinical environments. To this extent, a person-centred care approach is advocated for the medical radiation science professions so that a more inclusive medical imaging environment for patients and radiographers is provided. There is no summation of the body of knowledge available to promote all-encompassing environments for sexual and gender minority groups in medical imaging. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to establish the current evidence available on strategies that can be and are used to foster inclusive medical imaging environments for sexual and gender minority patient groups and radiographers. KEY FINDINGS Four articles, predominantly written from a global north perspective and within the last three years, formed part of this review. The strategies that emerged from the analysed articles were categorised into three themes, namely, using inclusive language, educating radiographers, and creating affirming health care environments. CONCLUSION Limited evidence exists on the strategies used to promote more inclusive medical imaging environments for sexual and gender minority patients and radiographers. Hence, more work in this area is needed from a diagnostic radiography perspective. Recommendations for possible future research are provided.
