Application of a Novel Collection of Exhaled Breath Condensate to Exercise Settings

The collection of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is a non-invasive method for obtaining biosamples from the lower respiratory tract, an approach amenable to exercise, environmental, and work physiology applications. The purpose of this study was to develop a cost-effective, reproducible methodology for obtaining larger volume EBC samples. Participants (male: n = 10; female: n = 6; 26 ± 8 yrs.) completed a 10 min EBC collection using a novel device (N-EBC). After initial collection, a 45 min bout of cycling at 75% HRmax was performed, followed by another N-EBC collection. In a subset of individuals (n = 5), EBC was obtained using both the novel technique and a commercially available EBC collection device (R-EBC) in a randomized fashion. N-EBC volume—pre- and post-exercise (2.3 ± 0.8 and 2.6 ± 0.9 mL, respectively)—and pH (7.4 ± 0.5 and 7.4 ± 0.5, respectively) were not significantly different. When normalized for participant body height, device comparisons indicated N-EBC volumes were larger than R-EBC at pre-exercise (+12%) and post-exercise (+48%). Following moderate-intensity exercise, no changes in the pre- and post-trial values of Pentraxin 3 (0.25 ± 0.04 and 0.26 ± 0.06 pg/mL, respectively) and 8-Isoprostrane (0.43 ± 0.33 and 0.36 ± 0.24 pg/mL, respectively) concentrations were observed. In a cost-efficient fashion, the N-EBC method produced larger sample volumes, both pre- and post-exercise, facilitating more biomarker tests to be performed.

Effects of acupuncture on heart rate variability in normal subjects under fatigue and non-fatigue state

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of acupuncture applied at Hegu (LI 4) points and Neiguan (PC6) points on heart rate variability (HRV) in normal subjects under fatigue and non-fatigue states using power spectral analysis. Twenty-nine normal male subjects were randomly divided into three groups. Subjects in Group A and Group B performed a simulated driving task for 3 h and acupuncture needles were then inserted perpendicularly into the LI 4 points in the middle of the dorsal thenar muscle and PC 6 points situated between the tendons of the palmaris longus and carpi radialis muscles for 15 min for Group A but inserted subcutaneously to the acupuncture points for Group B as a control. Acupuncture needles were directly inserted perpendicularly into the LI 4 points and PC 6 points for 15 min for Group C. Stimulations of the acupuncture points induced a significant decrease in heart rate (HR), HRV total power (TP), low frequency (LF) power and ratio of low frequency to high frequency (LF/HF), and a significant increase in the HF power in normalized units (NU) during the post stimulation period in fatigue state (P<0.05). Stimulation of acupuncture points resulted in a significant increase both in the LF power and HF power in absolute units (AU) (P<0.05) but no significant change in NU was found during the post stimulation period in non-fatigue state. It was concluded that the modulating effect of acupuncture on heart rate variability not only depended on the points of stimulation such as acupuncture or non-acupuncture points but also on the functional state of the subject, namely whether the subjects are in a state of fatigue or not.

Ventilatory response to incremental and constant-workload exercise in the presence of a thoracic restriction

In the presence of an externally applied thoracic restriction, conflicting ventilatory responses to exercise have been reported, which could be accounted for by differences in exercise protocol. Seven male subjects performed two incremental and two constant-workload ergometer tests either unrestricted or in the presence of an inelastic corset. Ventilatory variables and arterial estimates of PCO(2) were obtained breath by breath. Subjects hyperventilated in the presence of restriction during the constant-workload test (38.4 +/- 3.0 vs. 32.8 +/- 3.0 l/min for the average of the last 3 min of exercise, P < 0.05), whereas, at an equivalent workload during the incremental test, ventilation was similar to unrestricted values (unrestricted = 26.3 +/- 1.6 vs. restricted = 27.9 +/- 2.3 l/min, P = 0.36). We used a first-order linear model to describe the effects of change in workload on minute ventilation (24). When the time constants and minute ventilation values measured during unrestricted and restricted constant-workload exercise were used to predict the ventilatory response to the respective incremental exercise tests, no significant difference was observed. This suggests that hyperventilation is not seen in the restricted incremental test because the temporal dynamics of the ventilatory response are altered.
