Frequency characteristics of human muscle and cortical responses evoked by noisy Achilles tendon vibration

The effects of periodic and noisy tendon vibration on a kinesthetic targeting task

Tendon vibration is used extensively to assess the role of peripheral mechanoreceptors in motor control, specifically, the muscle spindles. Periodic tendon vibration is known to activate muscle spindles and induce a kinesthetic illusion that the vibrated muscle is longer than it actually is. Noisy tendon vibration has been used to assess the frequency characteristics of proprioceptive reflex pathways during standing; however, it is unknown if it induces the same kinesthetic illusions as periodic vibration. The purpose of the current study was to assess the effects of both periodic and noisy tendon vibration in a kinesthetic targeting task. Participants (N = 15) made wrist extension movements to a series of visual targets without vision of the limb, while their wrist flexors were either vibrated with periodic vibration (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 Hz), or with noisy vibration which consisted of filtered white noise with power between ~ 20 and 100 Hz. Overall, our results indicate that both periodic and noisy vibration can induce robust targeting errors during a wrist targeting task. Specifically, the vibration resulted in an undershooting error when moving to the target. The findings from this study have important implications for the use of noisy tendon vibration to assess proprioceptive reflex pathways and should be considered when designing future studies using noisy vibration.

Postural Responses to Achilles Tendon Vibration Depend on Feet Positioning

Mechanical vibration of the Achilles tendon is widely used to analyze the role of proprioception in postural control. The response to this tendon vibration (TV) has been analyzed in the upright posture, but the feet positions have varied in past research. Moreover, investigators have addressed only temporal parameters of the center of pressure (CoP). We investigated the effect of TV on both temporal and spectral characteristics of the CoP motion. Eighteen healthy young adults, stood barefoot, with one foot on each side of a dual platform, wearing glasses with opaque lenses. We applied 20 seconds of Achilles TV (bilaterally with inertial vibrators at a frequency of 80 Hz and an amplitude of .2-.5 mm). We analyzed CoP signals pre-vibration (PRE,4-seconds), during vibration (VIB,20 seconds), and after vibration cessation (REC,20 seconds). We repeated this protocol in natural and standardized positions (15° feet angular opening). For determining CoP amplitude and velocity, we divided the 20 seconds into five phases of four seconds each and calculated spectral parameters for the whole 20-second signals. There was an adaptation process in the speed of the CoP mediolateral (p < .01) and anteroposterior (p < .01) and in the displacement of the CoP anteroposterior (p < .01), with higher values in the VIB condition. Velocity and displacement decreased progressively in the REC condition. Median and peak frequencies were higher in the VIB condition when compared to the REC condition, but only in the mediolateral direction (p = .01). The standardized foot position led to increased speed in CoP mediolateral, anteroposterior, and mediolateral displacement (p < .01). CoP spectral characteristics were not affected by foot positioning. We concluded that adaptation of CoP motion in the presence of TV and after its cessation are observable both in time and frequency domains. Feet positioning influenced CoP motion in the presence of TV and after its cessation but it did not affect its spectral characteristics.

Visual feedback-dependent modulation of arousal, postural control, and muscle stretch reflexes assessed in real and virtual environments

Introduction

The mechanisms regulating neuromuscular control of standing balance can be influenced by visual sensory feedback and arousal. Virtual reality (VR) is a cutting-edge tool for probing the neural control of balance and its dependence on visual feedback, but whether VR induces neuromodulation akin to that seen in real environments (eyes open vs. closed or ground level vs. height platform) remains unclear.

Methods

Here we monitored 20 healthy young adults (mean age 23.3 ± 3.2 years; 10 females) during four conditions of quiet standing. Two real world conditions (eyes open and eyes closed; REO and REC) preceded two eyes-open virtual ‘low’ (ground level; VRL) and ‘high’ (14 m height platform; VRH) conditions. We measured arousal via electrodermal activity and psychosocial questionnaires rating perceived fear and anxiety. We recorded surface electromyography over the right soleus, medial gastrocnemius, and tibialis anterior, and performed force plate posturography. As a proxy for modulations in neural control, we assessed lower limb reflexive muscle responses evoked by tendon vibration and electrical stimulation.

Results

Physiological and perceptual indicators of fear and anxiety increased in the VRH condition. Background soleus muscle activation was not different across conditions; however, significant increases in muscle activity were observed for medial gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior in VRH relative to REO. The mean power frequency of postural sway also increased in the VRH condition relative to REO. Finally, with a fixed stimulus level across conditions, mechanically evoked reflexes remained constant, while H-reflex amplitudes decreased in strength within virtual reality.

Discussion

Notably, H-reflexes were lower in the VRL condition than REO, suggesting that these ostensibly similar visual environments produce different states of reflexive balance control. In summary, we provide novel evidence that VR can be used to modulate upright postural control, but caution that standing balance in analogous real and virtual environments may involve different neural control states.

A reliability study on the cumulative averaging method for estimating effective stimulus time in vibration studies

Finding the reflex circuitry responsible for high-frequency vibration-induced muscle contraction takes work. The main challenge is to determine the effective stimulus time (EST) point at which continuous (sinusoidal) stimulation (i.e., vibration) triggers the reflex response. A novel "cumulated averaging method" has been previously proposed for estimating the EST point. In the current study, we aimed to test the reliability of the cumulated average method. We used five different whole-body vibration (WBV) frequencies in two experiments. The consistency between the EST points estimated from the first and second experiments was analysed with the intraclass correlation (ICC) and technical error of measurement (TEM). The ICC coefficient with 95% CI for the EST point estimation was 0.988 (0.950-0.997). The relative TEM was 1.3%. We concluded that the cumulated average method is highly reliable in estimating the effective stimulus time point for high-frequency continuous sinusoidal signals.

Taping-induced cutaneous stimulation to the ankle tendons reduces minimum toe clearance variability

Large variability of minimum toe clearance (MTC) leads to a higher risk of tripping. Visual feedback-based gait training systems have been used to regulate MTC distribution, but these systems are expensive and bulky. Furthermore, the effect of such training lasts only for a short period of time. Considering the efficacy of elastic adhesive tape-induced cutaneous stimulation to the ankle tendons in improving proprioception and movement detection, we hypothesize that application of tapes to the ankle tendons as a practical method for modifying MTC distribution. To test this hypothesis, we recruited 13 young and healthy adults and instructed them to walk on a treadmill under four conditions: no taping, taping the tibialis anterior tendon, taping the Achilles tendon, and taping both tendons. We measured MTC distribution, lower limb joint angles and muscle activations of the tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius medialis, and compared these outcomes under the four conditions. The application of elastic adhesive tape to the ankle tendons had no significant effect on the average MTC height, but tapes applied to the Achilles tendon and both tendons significantly reduced MTC variability. Taping decreased the variability of some lower limb joint angles, but taping did not induce significant changes in the activation levels of the shank muscles. These results demonstrate that elastic adhesive tape applied to the shank can reduce MTC variability with minimal resistance, inertia and cumbersomeness.

The influence of reduced foot dorsum cutaneous sensitivity on the vestibular control of balance

PURPOSE

Foot sole cooling increases vestibular-evoked balance responses, but less is known about foot dorsum temperature alterations. The purpose was to determine whether decreasing cutaneous receptor sensitivity via foot dorsum cooling modulates the vestibular control of balance.

METHODS

Eighteen participants (9 males; 9 females) stood quietly on a force plate with feet together, eyes closed, and head rotated leftward during 4, 90-s trials (2 control; 2 cooled) of continuous electrical vestibular stimulation (EVS). Icepacks placed on the dorsum of both feet for 15 min induced cooling and remained throughout the EVS trials. Monofilament testing was performed at multiple locations before and after cooling to determine tactile detection thresholds. T-type thermocouples monitored skin temperature over the tibialis anterior, soleus, foot dorsum and arch of the right leg. Vestibular-evoked balance responses were characterized using time (cumulant density) and frequency (coherence and gain) domain analyses to determine the relationship between the EVS input and motor output (anteroposterior force-AP force; right medial gastrocnemius electromyography-MG EMG).

RESULTS

Skin temperature of the foot dorsum and arch decreased ~ 70 and 15%, respectively during cooling (p < 0.05), but was unaltered at other locations (p ≥ 0.10). Detection thresholds for the foot dorsum increased following cooling (p < 0.05). Surprisingly, cooling reduced EVS-AP force and EVS-MG EMG coherence and gain at multiple frequencies, and peak-to-peak amplitude compared to control (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Our results indicate that vestibular-driven balance responses are reduced following foot dorsum cooling, likely owing to alterations in cutaneous mechanoreceptor sensitivity and subsequent alterations in the transformation of vestibular cues for balance control.

Vertical ground reaction force oscillation during standing on hard and compliant surfaces: The “postural rhythm”

When a person stands upright quietly, the position of the Centre of Mass (CoM), the vertical force acting on the ground and the geometrical configuration of body segments is accurately controlled around to the direction of gravity by multiple feedback mechanisms and by integrative brain centres that coordinate multi-joint movements. This is not always easy and the postural muscles continuously produce appropriate torques, recorded as ground reaction force by a force platform. We studied 23 young adults during a 90 s period, standing at ease on a hard (Solid) and on a compliant support (Foam) with eyes open (EO) and with eyes closed (EC), focusing on the vertical component of the ground reaction force (VGRF). Analysis of VGRF time series gave the amplitude of their rhythmic oscillations (the root mean square, RMS) and of their frequency spectrum. Sway Area and Path Length of the Centre of Pressure (CoP) were also calculated. VGRF RMS (as well as CoP sway measures) increased in the order EO Solid ≈ EC Solid < EO Foam < EC Foam. The VGRF frequency spectra featured prevailing frequencies around 4–5 Hz under all tested conditions, slightly higher on Solid than Foam support. Around that value, the VGRF frequencies varied in a larger range on hard than on compliant support. Sway Area and Path Length were inversely related to the prevailing VGRF frequency. Vision compared to no-vision decreased Sway Area and Path Length and VGRF RMS on Foam support. However, no significant effect of vision was found on VGRF mean frequency for either base of support condition. A description of the VGRF, at the interface between balance control mechanisms and sway of the CoP, can contribute information on how upright balance is maintained. Analysis of the frequency pattern of VGRF oscillations and its role in the maintenance of upright stance should complement the traditional measures of CoP excursions in the horizontal plane.

Electromyographic responses to unexpected Achilles tendon vibration-induced perturbations during standing in young and older people

This study aimed to investigate age-related differences in electromyographic (EMG) responses to unexpected Achilles tendon vibration (ATV) perturbations while standing blindfold. ATV with variable and random duration (12-15 s) and rest periods (20-24 s) was applied on 18 young and 16 older volunteers. The anterior/posterior center of pressure (CoP) and the soleus (SOL) and tibialis anterior (TA) EMG were analyzed for 1 s before and 8 s after the ATV onset and offset. ATV induced a posterior shift of CoP in both groups, with more pronounced shift in the older group. During ATV onset, the older group demonstrated less SOL and more TA EMG increase compared to the young group. During the first 0.5 s of ATV offset, SOL EMG was decreased in both age groups, while TA showed a burst of EMG activity that was greater in the older group. No difference in the latencies of EMG peaks or valleys was observed between the groups. It is concluded that ATV induces greater posterior CoP shift in older adults, and they adopt a recovery strategy, characterized by a decreased SOL activation and an increased TA activation. These differences are possibly attributed to the increased fear of falling, decreased limits of stability and reduced capacity of older people to reweight their sensory inflow when proprioception is distorted.

The acute effects of periodic and noisy tendon vibration on wrist muscle stretch responses

Mechanical muscle tendon vibration activates multiple sensory receptors in the muscle and tendon. In particular, tendon vibration tends to activate the Ia afferents the strongest, but also will activate group II and Ib afferents. This activation can cause three main effects in the central nervous system: proprioceptive illusions, tonic vibration reflexes, and suppression of the stretch response. Noisy tendon vibration has been used to assess the frequency characteristics of proprioceptive reflexes and, interestingly there appeared to be no evidence for proprioceptive illusions or tonic vibration reflexes during standing [9]. However, it remains unknown if noisy vibration induces a suppression of the muscle stretch response. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of noisy and periodic tendon vibration on the stretch response in the flexor carpi radialis muscle (FCR). We examined FCR stretch responses with and without periodic (20 and 100 Hz) and noisy (∼10-100 Hz) tendon vibration. We additionally had participants perform the task under the instruction set to either not respond to the perturbation or to respond as fast as possible. The key finding from this study was that both periodic and noisy vibration resulted in a reduced stretch response amplitude. Additionally, it was found that a participant's intent to respond did not modulate the amount of suppression observed. The findings from this study provide a more detailed understanding of the effects of tendon vibration on the muscle stretch response.

The tightening parameters of the vibratory devices modify their disturbing postural effects

The purpose was to specify the impact of two different forces exerted by vibratory devices on the Achilles tendon on postural balance. The postural balance of 13 participants was evaluated on a force platform in two 40 s bipedal stance conditions with closed eyes. Tendon vibrations (80 Hz) were triggered 10 s after the beginning of the postural evaluation and applied during 20 s. Two levels of the force exerted by the vibrators were calibrated using load cells to control the tightening parameters of the vibrators: a strong tightening (ST) condition at 45 N and a light tightening (LT) condition at 5 N. The soleus electromyographic (EMG) activity and the spatio-temporal parameters of displacement of the centre of foot pressure (COP) were analysed. To analyse the effects of the introduction, the adaptation and the end of the stimulation, non-parametric tests were used. The results indicated that the soleus EMG activity increased only in the ST condition. However, during the vibration the anteroposterior COP position was significantly more in a backward position in the LT condition. At the end of the vibration, COP parameters increased more in the LT condition than the ST condition. This study demonstrated that the effects of the vibration depended on the force exerted by the devices on the tendons. The ST increased the vibration effects on EMG activity through greater stimulating effects compared to the LT. However, the ST could also increase the ankle joint stiffness and/or somaesthetic sensory information, which attenuated the COP backward shift.

Soleus responses to Achilles tendon stimuli are suppressed by heel and enhanced by metatarsal cutaneous stimuli during standing

KEY POINTS

We examined the influence of cutaneous feedback from the heel and metatarsal regions of the foot sole on the soleus stretch reflex pathway during standing. We found that heel electrical stimuli suppressed and metatarsal stimuli enhanced the soleus vibration response. Follow-up experiments indicated that the interaction between foot sole cutaneous feedback and the soleus vibration response was likely not mediated by presynaptic inhibition and was contingent upon a modulation at the ⍺-motoneuron pool level. The spatially organized interaction between cutaneous feedback from the foot sole and the soleus vibration response provides information about how somatosensory information is combined to appropriately respond to perturbations during standing.

ABSTRACT

Cutaneous feedback from the foot sole provides balance-relevant information and has the potential to interact with spinal reflex pathways. In this study, we examined how cutaneous feedback from the foot sole (heel and metatarsals) influenced the soleus response to proprioceptive stimuli during standing. We delivered noisy vibration (10-115 Hz) to the right Achilles tendon while we intermittently applied electrical pulse trains (five 1-ms pulses at 200 Hz, every 0.8-1.0 s) to the skin under either the heel or the metatarsals of the ipsilateral foot sole. We analysed time-dependent (referenced to cutaneous stimuli) coherence and cross-correlations between the vibration acceleration and rectified soleus EMG. Vibration-EMG coherence was observed across a bandwidth of ∼10-80 Hz, and coherence was suppressed by heel but enhanced by metatarsal cutaneous stimuli. Cross-correlations showed soleus EMG was correlated with the vibration (∼40 ms lag) and cross-correlations were also suppressed by heel (from 104-155 ms) but enhanced by metatarsal (from 76-128 ms) stimuli. To examine the neural mechanisms mediating this reflex interaction, we conducted two further experiments to probe potential contributions from (1) presynaptic inhibition, and (2) modulations at the ⍺- and γ-motoneuron pools. Results suggest the cutaneous interactions with the stretch reflex pathway required a modulation at the ⍺-motoneuron pool and were likely not mediated by presynaptic inhibition. These findings demonstrate that foot sole cutaneous information functionally tunes the stretch reflex pathway during the control of upright posture and balance.

Posture dependent ankle and foot muscle responses evoked by Achilles' tendon vibration

To investigate the link between the triceps surae and the intrinsic muscles of the foot, often underestimated in posture maintenance, we asked how Achilles' tendon vibration modulates the EMG activity of the soleus and flexor digitorum brevis (FDB) muscles during different postural tasks: sitting, standing and forward leaning. Young healthy participants (n = 19, age = 24 ± 7.4 years) stood for 60 s in three visually controlled postures, while vibration (1.5-1.8 mm, 80 Hz) was bilaterally applied over the Achilles' tendon during the middle 20 s. Center of Pressure (CoP) and EMG activity of the soleus and FDB muscle were summarized in 5 s epochs and compared across time (before, during and after vibration) and postural tasks. Achilles' tendon vibration shifted the CoP position forward in sitting and backward in standing and leaning and increased the root mean square of the CoP velocity to a greater extent in standing and leaning compared to sitting. Soleus and FDB EMG amplitude also increased in response to vibration. These responses were posture dependent, being greater in standing (soleus: 57 %, FDB: 67 % relative to pre-vibration) compared to sitting (soleus: 36 %, FDB: 27 % relative to pre-vibration) and leaning (soleus: 26 %, FDB: 8% relative to pre-vibration). After vibration offset, both soleus and FDB showed sustained activation across all three postures. Results highlight the presence of Ia afferent projections from the soleus to the α motor neurons of the FDB muscle triggered by Achilles' tendon vibration. This link is posture dependent serving a functional role in standing and forward leaning in the presence of externally applied perturbations.

Hypoxia and standing balance

PURPOSE

Standing balance control is important for everyday function and often goes unnoticed until impairments appear. Presently, more than 200 million people live at altitudes > 2500 m above sea level, and many others work at or travel to these elevations. Thus, it is important to understand how hypoxia alters balance owing to implications for occupations and travelers. Herein, the influence of normobaric and hypobaric hypoxia on standing balance control is reviewed and summarized. As postural control relies on the integration of sensorimotor signals, the potential hypoxic-sensitive neurophysiological factors that contribute to balance impairments are also reviewed. Specifically, we examine how hypoxia impairs visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive cues, and their integration within subcortical or cortical areas.

METHODS

This systematic review included a literature search conducted via multiple databases with keywords related to postural balance, hypoxia, and altitude. Articles (n = 13) were included if they met distinct criteria.

RESULTS

Compared to normoxia, normobaric hypoxia worsened parameters of standing balance by 2-10% and up to 83 and 240% in hypobaric hypoxia (high-altitude and lab-based, respectively). Although balance was only disrupted during normobaric hypoxia at F_IO₂ <  ~ 0.15, impairments consistently occurred during hypobaric hypoxia at altitudes > 1524 m (~ F_IO₂ < 0.18).

CONCLUSION

Hypoxia, especially hypobaric, impairs standing balance. The mechanisms underpinning postural decrements likely involve alterations to processing and integration of sensorimotor signals within subcortical or cortical structures involving visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive pathways and subsequent motor commands that direct postural adjustments. Future studies are required to determine the sensorimotor factors that may influence balance control in hypoxia.

Influence of age on the frequency characteristics of the soleus muscle response to Achilles tendon vibration during standing

KEY POINTS

Proprioceptive sensory information from the ankle joint is critical for the control of upright posture and balance. We examined the influence of age (n = 54 healthy adults, 20-82 years old) on lower limb muscle responses to proprioceptive perturbations evoked by Achilles tendon vibration during standing. The frequency bandwidth of the muscle response became narrower, and the gain (the muscle response relative to the stimulus) and scaling (increases in response amplitude with increases in stimulus amplitude) decreased with age. Mechanics of the muscle-tendon unit (mechanical admittance) did not differ with age during standing, and thus probably did not mediate the age-related changes observed in soleus muscle responses to vibration. These findings add to our understanding of how altered proprioceptive responses may contribute to impaired mobility and falls with ageing.

ABSTRACT

Proprioceptive information from the ankle joint plays an important role in the control of upright posture and balance. Ageing influences many components of the sensorimotor system, which leads to poor mobility and falls. However, little is known about the influence of age on the characteristics of short latency muscle responses to proprioceptive stimuli during standing across frequencies that are encoded by muscle spindles. We examined the frequency characteristics of the soleus muscle response to noisy (10-115 Hz) Achilles tendon vibration during standing in 54 healthy adults across a broad age range (20-82 years). The results showed the frequency bandwidth of the soleus response (vibration-electromyography coherence) became progressively narrower with ageing. Coherence was significantly lower in middle-aged relative to young adults between ∼7-11 and 28-62 Hz, lower in older relative to middle-aged adults between ∼30-50 Hz and lower in older relative to young adults between ∼7-64 Hz. Muscle response gain was similar between age groups at low frequencies, although gain was lower in older relative to young adults between ∼28-54 Hz. Across the age range, the response amplitude (peak-to-peak cross-covariance) and the scaling of the response with stimulus amplitude were both negatively correlated with age. Muscle-tendon mechanics (admittance) did not differ with age, suggesting this did not mediate differences in soleus responses. Our findings suggest there is a progressive change in the soleus response to proprioceptive stimuli with ageing during standing, which could contribute to poorer mobility and falls.

Lower-limb muscle responses evoked with noisy vibrotactile foot sole stimulation

AIM

Cutaneous feedback from the foot sole contributes to the control of standing balance in two ways: it provides perceptual awareness of tactile perturbations at the interface with the ground (e.g., shifts in the pressure distribution, slips, etc.) and it reflexively activates lower-motor neurons to trigger stabilizing postural responses. Here we focus on the latter, cutaneous (or cutaneomotor) reflex coupling in the lower limb. These reflexes have been studied most-frequently with electrical pulse trains that bypass natural cutaneous mechanotransduction, stimulating cutaneous afferents in a largely non-physiological manner. Harnessing the mechanical filtering properties of cutaneous afferents, we take a novel mechanical approach by applying supra-threshold continuous noisy vibrotactile stimulation (NVS) to the medial forefoot.

METHODS

Using NVS, we characterized the time and frequency domain properties of cutaneomotor reflexes in the Tibialis Anterior. We additionally measured stimulus-triggered average muscle responses to repeated discrete sinusoidal pulses for comparison. To investigate cutaneomotor reflex gain scaling, stimuli were delivered at 3- or 10-times perceptual threshold (PT), while participants held 12.5% or 25% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC).

RESULTS

Peak responses in the time domain were observed at lags reflecting transmission delay through a polysynaptic reflex pathway (~90-100 ms). Increasing the stimulus amplitude enhanced cutaneomotor coupling, likely by increasing afferent firing rates. Although greater background muscle contraction increased the overall amplitude of the evoked responses, it did not increase the proportion of the muscle response attributable to cutaneous input.

CONCLUSION

Taken together, our findings support the use of NVS as a novel tool for probing the physiological properties of cutaneomotor reflex pathways.

Soleus single motor units show stronger coherence with Achilles tendon vibration across a broad bandwidth relative to medial gastrocnemius units while standing

To probe the frequency characteristics of somatosensory responses in the triceps surae muscles, we previously applied suprathreshold noisy vibration to the Achilles tendon and correlated it with ongoing triceps surae muscle activity (recorded via surface EMG) during standing. Stronger responses to tendon stimuli were observed in soleus (Sol) relative to medial gastrocnemius (MGas) surface EMG; however, it is unknown whether differences in motor unit activity or limitations of surface EMG could have influenced this finding. Here, we inserted indwelling EMG into Sol and MGas to record the activity of single motor units while we applied noisy vibration (10-115 Hz) to the right Achilles tendon of standing participants. We analyzed the relationship between vibration acceleration and the spike activity of active single motor units through estimates of coherence, gain, phase, and cross-covariance. We also applied sinusoidal vibration at frequencies from 10 to 100 Hz (in 5-Hz increments) to examine whether motor units demonstrate nonlinear synchronization or phase locking at higher frequencies. Relative to MGas single motor units, Sol units demonstrated stronger coherence and higher gain with noisy vibration across a bandwidth of 7-68 Hz, and larger peak-to-peak cross-covariance at all four stimulus amplitudes examined. Sol and MGas motor unit activity was modulated over the time course of the sinusoidal stimuli across all frequencies, but their phase-locking behavior was minimal. These findings suggest Sol plays a prominent role in responding to disturbances transmitted through the Achilles tendon across a broad frequency band during standing.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We examined the relationship between Achilles tendon stimuli and spike times of single soleus (Sol) and medial gastrocnemius (MGas) motor units during standing. Relative to MGas, Sol units demonstrated stronger coherence and higher gain with noisy stimuli across a bandwidth of 7-68 Hz. Sol and MGas units demonstrated minimal nonlinear phase locking with sinusoidal stimuli. These findings indicate Sol plays a prominent role in responding to tendon stimuli across a broad frequency band.
