Representation of auditory-filter phase characteristics in the cortex of human listeners

Supra-threshold perception and neural representation of tones presented in noise in conditions of masking release

The neural representation and perceptual salience of tonal signals presented in different noise maskers were investigated. The properties of the maskers and signals were varied such that they produced different amounts of either monaural masking release, binaural masking release, or a combination of both. The signals were then presented at different levels above their corresponding masked thresholds and auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) were measured. It was found that, independent of the masking condition, the amplitude of the P2 component of the AEP was similar for the same stimulus levels above masked threshold, suggesting that both monaural and binaural effects of masking release were represented at the level of the auditory pathway where P2 is generated. The perceptual salience of the signal was evaluated at equal levels above masked threshold using a rating task. In contrast to the electrophysiological findings, the subjective ratings of the perceptual signal salience were less consistent with the signal level above masked threshold and varied strongly across listeners and masking conditions. Overall, the results from the present study suggest that the P2 amplitude of the AEP represents an objective indicator of the audibility of a target signal in the presence of complex acoustic maskers.

The role of compression in the simultaneous masker phase effect

Peripheral compression is believed to play a major role in the masker phase effect (MPE). While compression is almost instantaneous, activation of the efferent system reduces compression in a temporally evolving manner. To study the role of efferent-controlled compression in the MPE, in experiment 1, simultaneous masking of a 30-ms 4-kHz tone by 40-ms Schroeder-phase harmonic complexes was measured with on- and off-frequency precursors as a function of masker phase curvature for two masker levels (60 and 90 dB sound pressure level). The MPE was quantified by the threshold range [min/max difference (MMD)] across the phase curvatures. For the 60-dB condition, the presence of on-frequency precursor decreased the MMD from 10 to 5 dB. Experiment 2 studied the role of the precursor on the auditory filter's bandwidth. The on-frequency precursor was found to increase the bandwidth, an effect incorporated in the subsequent modeling. A model of the auditory periphery including cochlear filtering and basilar membrane compression generally underestimated the MMDs. A model based on two-step compression, including compression of inner hair cells, accounted for the MMDs across precursor and level conditions. Overall, the observed precursor effects and the model predictions suggest an important role of compression in the simultaneous MPE.

Duifhuis pitch: neuromagnetic representation and auditory modeling

When a high harmonic is removed from a cosine-phase harmonic complex, we hear a sine tone pop out of the perception; the sine tone has the pitch of the high harmonic, while the tone complex has the pitch of its fundamental frequency, f0. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as Duifhuis Pitch (DP). This paper describes, for the first time, the cortical representation of DP observed with magnetoencephalography. In experiment 1, conditions that produce the perception of a DP were observed to elicit a classic onset response in auditory cortex (P1m, N1m, P2m), and an increment in the sustained field (SF) established in response to the tone complex. Experiment 2 examined the effect of the phase spectrum of the complex tone on the DP activity: Schroeder-phase negative waves elicited a transient DP complex with a similar shape to that observed with cosine-phase waves but with much longer latencies. Following the transient DP activity, the responses of the negative and positive Schroeder-phase waves converged, and the increment in the SF slowly died away. In the absence of DP, the two Schroeder-phase conditions with low peak factors both produced larger SFs than cosine-phase waves with large peak factors. A model of the auditory periphery that includes coupling between adjacent frequency channels is used to explain the early neuromagnetic activity observed in auditory cortex.

Global not local masker features govern the auditory continuity illusion

When an acoustic signal is temporarily interrupted by another sound, it is sometimes heard as continuing through, even when the signal is actually turned off during the interruption-an effect known as the "auditory continuity illusion." A widespread view is that the illusion can only occur when peripheral neural responses contain no evidence that the signal was interrupted. Here we challenge this view using a combination of psychophysical measures from human listeners and computational simulations with a model of the auditory periphery. The results reveal that the illusion seems to depend more on the overall specific loudness than on the peripheral masking properties of the interrupting sound. This finding indicates that the continuity illusion is determined by the global features, rather than the fine-grained temporal structure, of the interrupting sound, and argues against the view that the illusion arises in the auditory periphery.

The biophysical origin of traveling-wave dispersion in the cochlea

Sound processing begins at the peripheral auditory system, where it undergoes a highly complex transformation and spatial separation of the frequency components inside the cochlea. This sensory signal processing constitutes a neurophysiological basis for psychoacoustics. Wave propagation in the cochlea, as shown by measurements of basilar membrane velocity and auditory nerve responses to sound, has demonstrated significant frequency modulation (dispersion), in addition to tonotopic gain and active amplification. The physiological and physical basis for this dispersion remains elusive. In this article, a simple analytical model is presented, along with experimental validation using physiological measurements from guinea pigs, to identify the origin of traveling-wave dispersion in the cochlea. We show that dispersion throughout the cochlea is fundamentally due to the coupled fluid-structure interaction between the basilar membrane and the scala fluids. It is further influenced by the variation in physical and geometrical properties of the basilar membrane, the sensitivity or gain of the hearing organ, and the relative dominance of the compression mode at about one-third octave beyond the best frequency.

On chirp stimuli and neural synchrony in the suprathreshold auditory brainstem response

The chirp-evoked ABR has been regarded as a more synchronous response than the click-evoked ABR, referring to the belief that the chirp stimulates lower-, mid-, and higher-frequency regions of the cochlea simultaneously. In this study a variety of tools were used to analyze the synchronicity of ABRs evoked by chirp- and click-stimuli at 40 dB HL in 32 normal hearing subjects aged 18 to 55 years (mean=24.8 years, SD=7.1 years). Compared to the click-evoked ABRs, the chirp-evoked ABRs showed larger wave V amplitudes, but an absence of earlier waves in the grand averages, larger wave V latency variance, smaller FFT magnitudes at the higher component frequencies, and larger phase variance at the higher component frequencies. These results strongly suggest that the chirp-evoked ABRs exhibited less synchrony than the click-evoked ABRs in this study. It is proposed that the temporal compensation offered by chirp stimuli is sufficient to increase neural recruitment (as measured by wave V amplitude), but that destructive phase interactions still exist along the cochlea partition, particularly in the low frequency portions of the cochlea where more latency jitter is expected. The clinical implications of these findings are discussed.
