Abstract
The visual system is a source of sensory information that perceives environmental stimuli and interacts with other sensory systems to generate visual and postural responses to maintain postural stability. Although the three sensory systems; the visual, vestibular, and somatosensory systems work concurrently to maintain postural control, the visual and vestibular system interaction is vital to differentiate self-motion from external motion to maintain postural stability. The visual system influences postural control playing a key role in perceiving information required for this differentiation. The visual system’s main afferent information consists of optic flow and retinal slip that lead to the generation of visual and postural responses. Visual fixations generated by the visual system interact with the afferent information and the vestibular system to maintain visual and postural stability. This review synthesizes the roles of the visual system and their interaction with the vestibular system, to maintain postural stability.

Abstract
Opsoclonus/flutter (O/F) is a rare disorder of the saccadic system. Previously, we modeled O/F that developed in a patient following abuse of anabolic steroids. That model, as in all models of the saccadic system, generates commands to make a change in eye position. Recently, we saw a patient who developed a unique form of opsoclonus following a concussion. The patient had postsaccadic ocular flutter in both directions of gaze, and opsoclonus during fixation and pursuit in the left hemifield. A new model of the saccadic system is needed to account for this gaze-position dependent O/F. We started with our prior model, which contains two key elements, mutual inhibition between inhibitory burst neurons on both sides and a prolonged reactivation time of the omnipause neurons (OPNs). We included new inputs to the OPNs from the nucleus prepositus hypoglossi and the frontal eye fields, which contain position-dependent neurons. This provides a mechanism for delaying OPN reactivation, and creating a gaze-position dependence. A simplified pursuit system was also added, the output of which inhibits the OPNs, providing a mechanism for gaze-dependence during pursuit. The rest of the model continues to generate a command to change eye position.

Abstract
During gaze shifts, the eyes and head collaborate to rapidly capture a target (saccade) and fixate it. Accordingly, models of gaze shift control should embed both saccadic and fixation modes and a mechanism for switching between them. We demonstrate a model in which the eye and head platforms are driven by a shared gaze error signal. To limit the number of free parameters, we implement a model reduction approach in which steady-state cerebellar effects at each of their projection sites are lumped with the parameter of that site. The model topology is consistent with anatomy and neurophysiology, and can replicate eye-head responses observed in multiple experimental contexts: 1) observed gaze characteristics across species and subjects can emerge from this structure with minor parametric changes; 2) gaze can move to a goal while in the fixation mode; 3) ocular compensation for head perturbations during saccades could rely on vestibular-only cells in the vestibular nuclei with postulated projections to burst neurons; 4) two nonlinearities suffice, i.e., the experimentally-determined mapping of tectoreticular cells onto brain stem targets and the increased recruitment of the head for larger target eccentricities; 5) the effects of initial conditions on eye/head trajectories are due to neural circuit dynamics, not planning; and 6) "compensatory" ocular slow phases exist even after semicircular canal plugging, because of interconnections linking eye-head circuits. Our model structure also simulates classical vestibulo-ocular reflex and pursuit nystagmus, and provides novel neural circuit and behavioral predictions, notably that both eye-head coordination and segmental limb coordination are possible without trajectory planning.

Abstract
The monitoring of one's own spatial orientation depends on the ability to estimate successive self-motion cues accurately. This process has become to be known as path integration. A feature of sequential cue estimation, in general, is that the history of previously experienced stimuli, or priors, biases perception. Here, we investigate how during angular path integration, the prior imparted by the displacement path dynamics affects the translation of vestibular sensations into perceptual estimates. Subjects received successive whole-body yaw rotations and were instructed to report their position within a virtual scene after each rotation. The overall movement trajectory either followed a parabolic path or was devoid of explicit dynamics. In the latter case, estimates were biased toward the average stimulus prior and were well captured by an optimal Bayesian estimator model fit to the data. However, the use of parabolic paths reduced perceptual uncertainty, and a decrease of the average size of bias and thus the weight of the average stimulus prior were observed over time. The produced estimates were, in fact, better accounted for by a model where a prediction of rotation magnitude is inferred from the underlying path dynamics on each trial. Therefore, when passively displaced, we seem to be able to build, over time, from sequential vestibular measurements an internal model of the vehicle's movement dynamics. Our findings suggest that in ecological conditions, vestibular afference can be internally predicted, even when self-motion is not actively generated by the observer, thereby augmenting both the accuracy and precision of displacement perception.

Abstract
Coordinating the movements of different body parts is a challenging process for the central nervous system because of several problems. Four of these main difficulties are: first, moving one part can move others; second, the parts can have different dynamics; third, some parts can have different motor goals; and fourth, some parts may be perturbed by outside forces. Here, we propose a novel approach for the control of linked systems with feedback loops for each part. The proximal parts have separate goals, but critically the most distal part has only the common goal. We apply this new control policy to eye-head coordination in two-dimensions, specifically head-unrestrained gaze saccades. Paradoxically, the hierarchical structure has controllers for the gaze and the head, but not for the eye (the most distal part). Our simulations demonstrate that the proposed control structure reproduces much of the published empirical data about gaze movements, e.g., it compensates for perturbations, accurately reaches goals for gaze and head from arbitrary initial positions, simulates the nine relationships of the head-unrestrained main sequence, and reproduces observations from lesion and single-unit recording experiments. We conclude by showing how our model can be easily extended to control structures with more linked segments, such as the control of coordinated eye on head on trunk movements.

Abstract
Humans routinely use coordinated eye-head gaze saccades to rapidly and accurately redirect the line of sight (Land MF. Vis Neurosci 26: 51–62, 2009). With a fixed body, the gaze control system combines visual, vestibular, and neck proprioceptive sensory information and coordinates two moving platforms, the eyes and head. Classic engineering tools have investigated the structure of motor systems by testing their ability to compensate for perturbations. When a reaching movement of the hand is subjected to an unexpected force field of random direction and strength, the trajectory is deviated and its final position is inaccurate. Here, we found that the gaze control system behaves differently. We perturbed horizontal gaze shifts with long-duration torques applied to the head that unpredictably either assisted or opposed head motion and very significantly altered the intended head trajectory. We found, as others have with brief head perturbations, that gaze accuracy was preserved. Unexpectedly, we found also that the eye compensated well—with saccadic and rollback movements—for long-duration head perturbations such that resulting gaze trajectories remained close to that when the head was not perturbed. However, the ocular compensation was best when torques assisted, compared with opposed, head motion. If the vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) is suppressed during gaze shifts, as currently thought, what caused invariant gaze trajectories and accuracy, early eye-direction reversals, and asymmetric compensations? We propose three mechanisms: a gaze feedback loop that generates a gaze-position error signal; a vestibular-to-oculomotor signal that dissociates self-generated from passively imposed head motion; and a saturation element that limits orbital eye excursion.

Abstract
The gaze orientation system is a prime example of the CNS using multiple platforms to achieve its goal. To move the gaze in space, the eyes, head, and body cooperate to place the image of the target on the fovea. Understanding the underlying neural circuitry innervating this collaboration could also be a cue to understanding other movement related CNS tasks involving multiple platforms, i.e., posture and locomotion. Basically two major network topologies for modeling the gaze orientation system have been proposed: the independent controller model and the shared gaze feedback controller model. In the independent controller model, each platform (i.e., eyes, head or trunk) receives its own share of the retinal error (distance of the target from the current gaze position) independent from other platform(s) and its goal is to null its individual error, whereas, in the shared gaze feedback controller all platforms collaborate to null the shared global error, which is calculated on the fly using feedback from all platforms or reflexes. Each of the mentioned general topologies has its own supporters and the question is which does the CNS actually use. In this article, based on evidence from neurophysiology and behavior, complemented by simulation data, it will be shown why a shared feedback controller is the better candidate for this task. More specifically, simulations of an updated Prsa-Galiana model (the Shared Sensory-Motor Integration (SMI) model) will be discussed in more detail and, where applicable, compared with other popular models, including independent and shared controller models. It provides plausible explanations for observations on gaze shifts with various interventions.

Abstract
The Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex (VOR) stabilizes images of the world on our retinae when our head moves. Basic daily activities are thus impaired if this reflex malfunctions. During the past few decades, scientists have modeled and identified this system mathematically to diagnose and treat VOR deficits. However, traditional methods do not analyze VOR data comprehensively because they disregard the switching nature of nystagmus; this can bias estimates of VOR dynamics. Here we propose, for the first time, an automated tool to analyze entire VOR responses (slow and fast phases), without a priori classification of nystagmus segments. We have developed GNL-HybELS (Generalized NonLinear Hybrid Extended Least Squares), an algorithmic tool to simultaneously classify and identify the responses of a multi-mode nonlinear system with delay, such as the horizontal VOR and its alternating slow and fast phases. This algorithm combines the procedures of Generalized Principle Component Analysis (GPCA) for classification, and Hybrid Extended Least Squares (HybELS) for identification, by minimizing a cost function in an optimization framework. It is validated here on clean and noisy VOR simulations and then applied to clinical VOR tests on controls and patients. Prediction errors were less than 1 deg for simulations and ranged from .69 deg to 2.1 deg for the clinical data. Nonlinearities, asymmetries, and dynamic parameters were detected in normal and patient data, in both fast and slow phases of the response. This objective approach to VOR analysis now allows the design of more complex protocols for the testing of oculomotor and other hybrid systems.

Abstract
We examined the performance of a dynamic neural network that replicates much of the psychophysics and neurophysiology of eye-head gaze shifts without relying on gaze feedback control. For example, our model generates gaze shifts with ocular components that do not exceed 35 degrees in amplitude, whatever the size of the gaze shifts (up to 75 degrees in our simulations), without relying on a saturating nonlinearity to accomplish this. It reproduces the natural patterns of eye-head coordination in that head contributions increase and ocular contributions decrease together with the size of gaze shifts and this without compromising the accuracy of gaze realignment. It also accounts for the dependence of the relative contributions of the eyes and the head on the initial positions of the eyes, as well as for the position sensitivity of saccades evoked by electrical stimulation of the superior colliculus. Finally, it shows why units of the saccadic system could appear to carry gaze-related signals even if they do not operate within a gaze control loop and do not receive head-related information.

Abstract
The oculomotor system plays an essential role in our daily activities. It keeps the images of the world steady on the retina and enables us to track visual targets, or switch between targets. The modeling and identification of this system is key in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases and lesions. Today, clinical protocols incorporate mathematical techniques to test the functionality of patients' oculomotor modalities through the analysis of the patients' responses to various stimuli. We have developed a new tool for simultaneous identification of the two modes of oculomotor responses, using hybrid extended least squares (HybELS), a novel identification method tailored for hybrid autoregressive moving average with exogenous input models. Previously, modified extended least squares (MELS) was proposed for the identification of vestibular nystagmus dynamics, one mode at a time. It involved searching for segment initial conditions (ICs) to avoid biased results. HybELS identifies both modes simultaneously, and does not require estimation of ICs. Results on experimental vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) data show that HybELS proves to be more robust than MELS with respect to identification of complex models. Furthermore, it is notably less computationally expensive than MELS. In the multi-input case, HybELS outperforms other tested methods, including MELS, both in parameter estimation and prediction error.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The brainstem and cerebellum contain many neuronal types that play a critical role in eye movement control. In a physiological approach, understanding how these neuronal assemblies cooperate provides strong insight into general brain functions. Furthermore, eye movements provide an interesting model for understanding neural mechanisms of sensorimotor learning, and a knowledge of the mechanisms underlying oculomotor plasticity is essential for correctly diagnosing and effectively managing patients. Finally, knowledge of the ocular motor syndromes frequently helps localize the pathological abnormality. RECENT FINDINGS We review the recently published works dealing with the physiological organization and pathology of slow and rapid eye movements at a brainstem and cerebellar level. SUMMARY The main recent findings of great interest for clinical practice or research concern the physiopathology of head shaking nystagmus, downbeat nystagmus and oculopalatal tremor; the neural substrates of three-dimensional control of eye movements and of optokinetic nystagmus; the understanding of saccade generation and of its consequences on physiological and pathological eye oscillations; and, finally, the physiological basis of saccadic adaptation.
