Abstract
It is important for future clinical applications to design and synthesize multipurpose scaffolding materials for bone tissue engineering with high osteogenic induction and MRI capability. In the present study, we synthesized Ce/Gd@HA by co-doping Ce3+ and Gd3+ into hydroxyapatite (HA) using a hydrothermal synthesis method, and then Ce/Gd@HA composites were synthesized by combining Ce/Gd@HA nanoparticles with polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) to investigate whether implanted Ce/Gd@HA/PLGA composites could promote osteoblast viability, leading to tibia repair of the rats and enhance MRI. The measurement results contain X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) showing that HA doped with Ce3+ and Gd3+ was still a hexagonal crystal with high crystallinity. The synthesized Ce/Gd@HA/PLGA composites have a structure and obvious magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) capability. The in vitro experimental results indicated that Ce/Gd@HA/PLGA composites significantly promoted the performance of MC3T3-E1 cells, containing proliferation, adhesion, and osteogenic differentiation capacities. These include the improvement of alkaline phosphatase activity, enhancement of mineral deposition, and upregulation of OCN and COL-1 gene expression. The in vivo experimental results demonstrated that the Ce/Gd@HA/PLGA composites significantly improved the healing rate of rat bone defects. The MRI images indicated that the Ga-doped composites were observed in the MRI T1 sequence in rats. The aforementioned results suggested that Ce/Gd@HA/PLGA composites not only effectively promoted bone formation but also enhanced MRI capability. The composites synthesized in this study have great potential in bone regeneration with an extensive application in bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
To investigate the chemotherapeutic and pharmacokinetic aspects of two lanthanide complexes (Tb(III) and La(III) containing 2,2'-bipyridine ligand), in vitro binding studies were carried out with BSA by employing multiple biophysical methods and molecular modeling study. There are different techniques containing fluorescence, absorption spectroscopy and competitive experiments to determine the interaction mode between BSA and these complexes. These complexes efficiently quenched the BSA emission through a static procedure. The results showed that the terbium and lanthanum complexes exhibited a high propensity for BSA interaction via van der Waals force. Further, competitive examination and docking study showed that the interaction site of these complexes on BSA is site III. The results of docking calculations were in good agreement with experimental examinations. Also, the energy transfer from BSA to these complexes has happened with high possibility. Moreover, antimicrobial studies of different bacterial and fungi indicated its promising antibacterial activity. In vitro cytotoxicity of the Tb complex and La complex was carried out in MCF-7 and A-549 cell lines, which revealed significantly good activity.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
To determine the chemotherapeutic and pharmacokinetic aspects of an ytterbium complex containing 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Me2Phen), in vitro binding studies were carried out with FS-DNA/BSA by employing multiple biophysical methods and a molecular modeling study. There are different techniques including absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, circular dichroism studies, viscosity experiments (only in the case of DNA), and competitive experiments used to determine the interaction mode between DNA/BSA and the ytterbium-complex. The results showed that the Yb-complex exhibited a high propensity for the interaction of BSA and DNA via hydrophobic interactions and van der Waals forces. Further, a competitive examination and docking study showed that the interaction site of the ytterbium complex on BSA is site III. The results of docking calculations for DNA/BSA were in good agreement with experimental findings. The complex displays efficient DNA cleavage in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, antimicrobial studies of different bacteria and fungi indicated its promising antibacterial activity. In vitro cytotoxicity studies of the Yb-complex, starch nano-encapsulated, and lipid nano-encapsulated were carried out in MCF-7 and A-549 cell lines, which revealed significantly good activity. The results of anticancer activity studies showed that the cytotoxic activity of the Yb-complex was increased when encapsulated with nanocarriers. Based on biological applications of the Yb-complex, it can be concluded that this complex and its nanocarriers can act as novel anticancer and antimicrobial candidates. The biological applications of Yb-complexes including anticancer, antimicrobial and DNA cleavage ability, and their interaction with FS-DNA and BSA were examined.![]()

Abstract
The incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus increased during the past few decades, so there is an urgent need of new antimicrobial agents if public health is concerned. Though the Schiff's bases and La(III) complex have enormous biological activity, but less attention was given in their synthesis. In the present investigation, we synthesized a new (E)-3-((2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl) methyleneamino)-2-methylquinazoline-4(3H)-one HNMAMQ Schiff's base by the condensation of 3-(2-aminophenyl) quinazolin-2-methyl-4(3H)-one and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde. The Schiff's base HNMAMQ and its La(III) complex were characterized by elemental analyses, IR, NMR, mass spectra, and thermal studies. The newly synthesized Schiff's base HNMAMQ and its La(III) complex were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from the Gulbarga region in India. The Schiff's base HNMAMQ and its La(III) complex showed good antimicrobial activity and thus represents a potential new drug of choice.

Abstract
The 3-(2-aminophenyl) quinazolin-2-methyl-4(3H)-one and 2,4-dihydroxyacetophenone undergo condensation to afford (E)3-2-(1-(2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)ethyldeneamino)phenyl)-2-methylquinazoline-4(3H)-one Schiff base (DHPEAPMQ). The newly synthesized Schiff base (DHPEAPMQ) and its metal complexes were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from the Gulbarga region in India. The Cu(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) complexes of Schiff base (DHPEAPMQ) showed good antimicrobial activity. So, this could be a new drug of choice.

Abstract
Five-coordinate, neutral transition metal complexes of newly designed pyridine-2-ethyl-(3-carboxylideneamino)-3-(2-phenyl)-1,2-dihydroquinazolin-4(3H)-one (L) were synthesized and characterized. The structure of ligand is confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The compounds were evaluated for the anti-inflammatory activity by carrageenan-induced rat paw edema model while their analgesic activity was determined by acetic acid-induced writhing test in mice wherein the transition metal complexes were found to be more active than the free ligand.
