Preventive effect of isostrictiniin from Nymphaea candida on carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic fibrosis in mice

This study aimed to investigate the preventive effect of isostrictiniin (ISO) from Nymphaea candida against CCl₄-induced hepatic fibrosis (HF) in mice. HF in mice was induced by intraperitoneally injecting 10% CCl₄ olive oil solution twice a week. After intragastric administration for 8 weeks. ISO (25, 50, or 100 mg/kg) could significantly reduce the serum AST, ALT, ALP, HA, LN, PC-III, C-IV, IL-1β, and TNF-α levels in HF mice, and the collagen fiber deposition in ISO group was significantly less than that in the model group. Compared with control group, the protein expression of IKKα, NF-ҡB p65, p-NF-ҡKB p65, p-IҡBα in model group were increased as well as the relative content of IKKα, NF-ҡB p65, and IҡBα mRNA. ISO could reverse the expression of these relative proteins and mRNA in HF mice. Our findings confirm that ISO has anti-HF activity, and its mechanism is related to the regulation of NF-ҡB pathway.

Steam gasification of land, coastal zone and marine biomass by thermal gravimetric analyzer and a free-fall tubular gasifier: Biochars reactivity and hydrogen-rich syngas production

The steam gasification properties and kinetics, products distribution and syngas composition derived from land, coastal zone and marine biomass have been studied by TGA and free-fall tubular gasifier. Volume model, shrinking core model and random pore model were applied to describe the reaction kinetics. The influence of temperature and fuel types on steam gasification in a free-fall tubular gasifier were clarified simultaneously. Results showed that gasification reactivity of reed (Re) and Sargassum horneri (Sh) chars were better than that of corn stalks (Cs) char, which mostly determined by its carbonaceous structure and the varying inorganic contents. RPM model was applied successfully to corresponding to the experimental data. Bench scale reactor test found that the steam gasification of Re gave the largest amount of gaseous product than Sh and Cs, while no liquidus formation in Sh. An increase in the temperature during gasification process boosted produced sharply total gas production yield, more yield of H₂ and CO₂ and less CO and CH₄ from different biomass.

Fast pyrolysis characteristics of two typical coastal zone biomass fuels by thermal gravimetric analyzer and down tube reactor

This study aimed at investigating fast pyrolysis behavior and products distribution of two typical coastal zone biomass fuels (Jerusalem artichoke stalk (JAS) and reeds (Re) by TGA and a homemade down tube reactor. The kinetic analysis with different ramping rates was conducted by FWO and DAEM models. The liquid, gaseous and solid products are characterized to study the influence of temperature. Results indicate that high heating rates may be overcome some resistances to mass or heat transfer inside the particles of biomass, and lead to a higher conversion rates and Re species is preferable to JAs in terms of thermochemical conversion because of the lower apparent activation energy for total conversion. Moreover, the pyrolysis conditions - temperature under fast pyrolysis in a down tube pyrolysis unit will make the covalent bonds in the biomass degradation more rapidly, gave significant influence on the yields and properties of liquid, gaseous and solid products.

Systematic review of acupuncture for the treatment of alcohol withdrawal syndrome

Background

Acupuncture has been used as a potential therapy for alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS), but evidence for its effects on this condition is limited.

Objective

To assess the effects and safety of acupuncture for AWS.

Data sources

Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, Chinese Biomedicine Literature (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Wan-Fang Database were searched from their inception to August 2016.

Study eligibility criteria

Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of drug plus acupuncture or acupuncture alone for the treatment of AWS were included.

Data collection and analysis

Continuous data were expressed as mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Dichotomous data were expressed as risk ratio (RR) with 95% CI.

Results

Eleven RCTs with 875 participants were included. In the acute phase, two trials reported no difference between drug plus acupuncture and drug plus sham acupuncture in the reduction of craving for alcohol; however, two positive trials reported that drug plus acupuncture was superior to drug alone in the alleviation of psychological symptoms. In the protracted phase, one trial reported acupuncture was superior to sham acupuncture in reducing the craving for alcohol, one trial reported no difference between acupuncture and drug (disulfiram), and one trial reported acupuncture was superior to sham acupuncture for the alleviation of psychological symptoms. Adverse effects were tolerable and not severe.

Conclusion

There was nosignificant difference between acupuncture (plus drug) and sham acupuncture (plus drug) with respect to the primary outcome measure of craving for alcohol among participants with AWS, and no difference in completion rates (pooled results). There was limited evidence from individual trials that acupuncture may reduce alcohol craving in the protracted phase and help alleviate psychological symptoms; however, given concerns about the quantity and quality of included studies, further large-scale and well-conducted RCTs are needed.

Nutritive value of sun-dried common reed (Phragmites australis) leaves and its effect on performance and carcass characteristics of the growing rabbit

The nutritive value and potential use of sun-dried common reed (<em>Phragmites australis</em>) leaves (CRL), for growing rabbits was studied by comparing 3 diets (regression method) containing an increasing incorporation rate of CRL: 0% (control, CRL0), 15% (CRL15) and 30% (CRL30) in substitution for the control diet (356 g neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and 197 g crude protein (CP)/kg). Three groups of 37 rabbits (individually caged) were fed the 3 diets <em>ad libitum</em> from weaning (35 d, mean weight: 722±142 g) to 77 d of age. The faecal digestibility of the diets was measured between 42 and 46 d of age in 10 rabbits per group. CRL can be considered high-fibre roughage, as it contained 64% of NDF (38% of ADF and 10% ADL) and 10.2% of CP. The digestible energy (DE) content of CRL calculated by regression was null (–1.8±0.29 MJ/kg as fed). CP digestibility reached 29%, corresponding to a digestible crude protein concentration of 29.0±5.6 g/kg as fed basis. The fibre digestibility was reduced with CRL incorporation. Dietary incorporation of CRL impaired the rabbit growth (34.2 vs. 31.5 g/d during the period 35-77 d without CRL or with CRL (CRL15 and CRL30), respectively; P=0.002). Consequently, feed conversion was impaired with the high incorporation rate in feed (30%). Health status or main slaughter traits were not affected by CRL incorporation rate. Thus, the sun-dried common reed leaves had a poor nutritive value for growing rabbits and it can be considered a high-fibre feedstuff, interesting to supply low digested fibres (cellulose) and lignin.

Production of induced secondary metabolites by a co-culture of sponge-associated actinomycetes, Actinokineospora sp. EG49 and Nocardiopsis sp. RV163

Two sponge-derived actinomycetes, Actinokineospora sp. EG49 and Nocardiopsis sp. RV163, were grown in co-culture and the presence of induced metabolites monitored by ¹H NMR. Ten known compounds, including angucycline, diketopiperazine and β-carboline derivatives 1–10, were isolated from the EtOAc extracts of Actinokineospora sp. EG49 and Nocardiopsis sp. RV163. Co-cultivation of Actinokineospora sp. EG49 and Nocardiopsis sp. RV163 induced the biosynthesis of three natural products that were not detected in the single culture of either microorganism, namely N-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-acetamide (11), 1,6-dihydroxyphenazine (12) and 5a,6,11a,12-tetrahydro-5a,11a-dimethyl[1,4]benzoxazino[3,2-b][1,4]benzoxazine (13a). When tested for biological activity against a range of bacteria and parasites, only the phenazine 12 was active against Bacillus sp. P25, Trypanosoma brucei and interestingly, against Actinokineospora sp. EG49. These findings highlight the co-cultivation approach as an effective strategy to access the bioactive secondary metabolites hidden in the genomes of marine actinomycetes.

Patients' experience of auricular acupuncture during protracted withdrawal

Over the last decades interest in using auricular acupuncture for substance dependence care has increased. The specific auricular acupuncture protocol used follows the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) definition. This paper describes patients' experiences of receiving auricular acupuncture during protracted withdrawal. Interviews were conducted with 15 patients treated at an outpatient clinic for substance dependence. Content analysis was used to analyse the interviews. The analysis resulted in seven categories of positive experiences and seven categories of negative experiences. The positive experiences were: Relaxation and well-being, Peacefulness and harmony, New behaviours, Positive physical impact, Importance of context, Anxiety reduction and Reduced drug and alcohol consumption. The negative experiences were: Nothing negative, Disturbing context, Short-term effect, Depending on someone else, Time-consuming, Physical distractions and Remaining cravings. The conclusion of this study is that all respondents appreciated NADA treatment. This study supports further research on using NADA in addiction treatment to reduce suffering during protracted withdrawal and in other contexts.
