Abstract
BACKGROUND Pest management professionals will require a diverse, adaptive abatement toolbox to combat advanced challenges from disease vector and nuisance insect populations. Designed for post-application longevity, insecticidal paints offer extended residual effects on targeted insect pest populations; a measured understanding of active ingredient bioavailability over time is valuable to fully assess treatment efficacy and potential environmental risks. This study was initiated because a nuisance net-spinning caddisfly, Smicridea fasciatella, is lowering the quality of life for riverfront residents at the type locality. RESULTS We tested the efficacy and potential mobility of a transfluthrin-based paint (a.i. 0.50%), comparing the impacts of UV exposure and substrate texture over time. Direct UV exposure decreased efficacy (β ± S.E. = 0.008 ± 0.001, P < 0.001) and a coarse texture maintained greater efficacy (β ± S.E. = -3.7 ± 1.3, P = 0.004) over time. Notably, the coarse texture + indirect UV treatment maintained 100% mortality after 240 days. UV exposure and substrate texture did not have a significant impact on leachate concentrations over time, and successive immersion tests indicated a two-phase emission pattern. Bioaccumulation increased with time on the cuticle of dead adult S. fasciatella; after 24 h of direct exposure the concentration of transfluthrin was 25.3 ± 0.9 ng/caddisfly with a maximum concentration of 345 ng/caddisfly after 7 days. CONCLUSION Our predictions were validated with measured, time-dependent impacts on efficacy, leachability, and bioaccumulation. Because of the mobility of active ingredient in the environment, insecticidal paints merit low-impact protocols to improve public health outcomes and environmental safety. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The current study was designed to evaluate the possible protective effects of luteolin against β-cyfluthrin-mediated toxicity on the primary culture of rat hepatocytes (RHs). In the first step, the exposure of RHs to β-cyfluthrin (10, 20, 40, and 80 μM) was assessed by MTT. Second, redox condition was evaluated in cotreatment of cells with luteolin (20, 40, and 60 μM) and β-cyfluthrin (40 μM) at both medium and intra levels. In comparison to control, viability was lower in 40 and 80 μM β-cyfluthrin-treated groups at 24 h and all β-cyfluthrin-treated groups at 48 h (P < 0.05). Cotreatment with 20 or 40 μM luteolin + 40 μM β-cyfluthrin resulted in a higher viability value compared to β-cyfluthrin alone at 24 and 48 h of incubation (P < 0.05). Administration of 20 or 40 μM luteolin with β-cyfluthrin led to the decrease of malondialdehyde and total nitrate/nitrite and the increase of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) values in both medium and intrahepatocyte levels compared to the β-cyfluthrin-treated group at 48 h (P < 0.05). It seems that low and medium doses of luteolin possess the potential to reduce β-cyfluthrin-mediated hepatotoxicity via attenuation of peroxidative/nitrosative reactions and augmentation of TAC levels.

Abstract
Current study was designed to evaluate the effects of β-cyfluthrin, as a toxicant substance, and trans-ferulic acid (trans-FA), as a protective agent, on different parameters of rooster semen upon liquid storage. For this purpose, semen samples of roosters (Ross 308, n = 10, 32-wk-old) were collected twice a week. Good quality samples (≥70% progressive motion) were diluted, pooled and then divided for the purposes of the study. In the first experiment, motility of spermatozoa was evaluated following exposure to different concentrations of β-cyfluthrin (1, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 µM) at 0, 24, and 48 h of storage. In the second experiment, constant doses of β-cyfluthrin (10 µM) alone or in combination with trans-FA (10, 25 mM) were assessed on motility and viability of spermatozoa at 0, 24, and 48 h time points. Moreover, amounts of malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total nitrate-nitrite, total hydroperoxide (HPO), and activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) were evaluated in the homogenate of spermatozoa-diluent at studied time points. Results of the first experiment showed that amounts of β-cyfluthrin greater than 5 µM, significantly reduced the motility of spermatozoa at 24 and 48 h of storage (P < 0.05). The second experiment demonstrated that, trans-FA especially at 10, 25 mM doses restored the motility and viability of spermatozoa compared to β-cyfluthrin treated group (P < 0.05). Amounts of MDA (10, 25 mM), hydroperoxide (10, 25, and 50 mM), and nitrate-nitrite (10, 25, and 50 mM) were lower and TAC (10 and 25 mM) were greater in trans-FA + β-cyfluthrin treated groups compared to β-cyfluthrin alone treated samples (P < 0.05). However, activity of SOD did not show significant changes by the treatment (P > 0.05). It seems that trans-FA could ameliorate toxic effect of β-cyfluthrin via reduction of peroxidative (as evident by measurement of MDA) and nitrosative (as evident by measurement of nitrate-nitrite) reactions over cold preservation of rooster semen.

Abstract
Neonicotinoids have recently been demonstrated to cause direct negative impacts on birds from North America and Europe. To further understand the impact of these compounds on bird species and to improve risk assessment capacities, the current study determined the acute toxicities of imidacloprid, clothianidin, and thiamethoxam formulations on South American eared doves (Zenaida auriculata). Insecticides were administered by gavage to adult doves to determine median lethal doses (LD50) according to a standardized sequential procedure. The acute toxicity of formulated imidacloprid (LD50=59mg active ingredient, a.i./kg body weight, b.w.) was much higher than that of the tested formulations of clothianidin (LD50=4248mga.i./kg b.w.) and thiamethoxam (LD50=4366mga.i./kg b.w.). Imidacloprid also differed from the other two neonicotinoids in terms of the onset and intensity of intoxication signs and the times of death and recovery. All three insecticides induced a reduction in food consumption that led to body weight loss. An average weight dove of 127g would obtain a dose equivalent to the LD50 of imidacloprid by consuming 1.7g of treated sorghum seeds. As eared doves offered non-treated sorghum seeds 5h per day consumed on average 6.4±1.8g (mean±S.D.), it is concluded that these doves could feasibly be exposed to lethal doses in the field. This work is the first to describe intoxication signs and report oral neonicotinoid LD50s in a wild South-American bird species.

Abstract
In this study, the acute (72h and 14 d) and chronic (28 d and 8 weeks) effects of cyfluthrin on earthworms were evaluated across different endpoints, which are mortality, growth, reproduction and enzyme activities. Cyfluthrin was rated as moderately toxic in 72-h filter paper test and low toxic in 14-day soil test. The exposure of earthworms to cyfluthrin-polluted soil for 8 weeks showed that growth of earthworms was inhibited by cyfluthrin, cocoon production and hatching were inhibited by 20-60mg/kg cyfluthrin. Moreover, 28-day soil test on the responses of enzymes associated with antioxidation and detoxification showed that the activities of catalase (CAT) and glutathione S- transferase (GST) were initially increased by cyfluthrin at 5-20mg/kg, but reduced at 30-60mg/kg, peroxidase (POD) was increased by 26-102% by cyfluthrin in the early period, except 5mg/kg on day 7, and ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) was increased by 29-335% by cyfluthrin after 3 days. Cyfluthrin degraded with a half-life of 24.8-34.8 d, showing the inconsistency between the continuous toxic responses of earthworms and degradation of cyfluthrin in soil. The variable responses of these indexes indicated that different level endpoints should be jointly considered for better evaluation of the environmental risk of contaminants in soil.

Abstract
Pyrethroids, commercially available pesticides, are greatly in use these days, and thus they carry considerable chances of contaminating various ecosystems. Haematotoxicity of cypermethrin, a broadly used type II pyrethroid, has been assessed in the present study. Selected parameters included determination of total RBC count, haemoglobin concentration (Hb conc.), packed cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), total leukocyte count (TLC), differential leukocyte count (DLC), along with qualitative analysis of blood and bone marrow. Of these parameters, those showing significant decline following cypermethrin intoxication included total RBC count, Hb conc., PCV, MCV, MCH, whereas non-significant decrease was observed in the case of MCHC. ESR, TLC and DLC, on the other hand, increased significantly following cypermethrin intoxication. Qualitative changes included altered red cell morphology such as microcystosis, appearance of stomatocytes, poikilocytosis, giant platelet formation, etc. in peripheral blood and increased erythroid precursors in bone marrow of treated rats. These parameters were however normalised following twenty-two days of recovery phase.
