Abstract
Aim: This study purposed to evaluate thyroid hormone levels and work-related factors in workers.
Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was perfomed at 475 workers who applied to the outpatient clinic of occupational diseases between November 2015-February 2020. Sociodemographic variables, work-related factors and laboratory records were retrospectively evaluated. Student’s t-test was performed to compare mean values. Multiple linear regression analysis was used, including independent variables that were found to be statistically significantly related in binary analysis of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) value.
Results: Of the 475 participants, 433 (91.2%) were male and 173 (36.4%) worked night shifts, 293 (61.7%) were exposed to silica dust, 23 (4.8%) to plastic fumes, and 80 (16.8%) to solvent. Study participants who were over 40 years of age, night shift workers, and workers with exposure to silica dust had significantly lower TSH values (p=0.026, p=0.023, p=0.002, respectively); male workers, workers under 40 years of age, and workers with body mass index (BMI)

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies of associations between industrial air emissions and rheumatic diseases, or diseases-related serological biomarkers, are few. Moreover, previous evaluations typically studied individual (not mixed) emissions. We investigated associations between individual and combined exposures to industrial sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and fine particles matter (PM2.5) on anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA), a characteristic biomarker for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS Serum ACPA was determined for 7600 randomly selected CARTaGENE general population subjects in Quebec, Canada. Industrial SO2, NO2, and PM2.5 concentrations, estimated by the California Puff (CALPUFF) atmospheric dispersion model, were assigned based on residential postal codes at the time of sera collection. Single-exposure logistic regressions were performed for ACPA positivity defined by 20 U/ml, 40 U/ml, and 60 U/ml thresholds, adjusting for age, sex, French Canadian origin, smoking, and family income. Associations between regional overall PM2.5 exposure and ACPA positivity were also investigated. The associations between the combined three industrial exposures and the ACPA positivity were assessed by weighted quantile sum (WQS) regressions. RESULTS Significant associations between individual industrial exposures and ACPA positivity defined by the 20 U/ml threshold were seen with single-exposure logistic regression models, for industrial emissions of PM2.5 (odds ratio, OR = 1.19, 95% confidence intervals, CI: 1.04-1.36) and SO2 (OR = 1.03, 95% CI: 1.00-1.06), without clear associations for NO2 (OR = 1.01, 95% CI: 0.86-1.17). Similar findings were seen for the 40 U/ml threshold, although at 60 U/ml, the results were very imprecise. The WQS model demonstrated a positive relationship between combined industrial exposures and ACPA positivity (OR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.10-1.69 at 20 U/ml) and suggested that industrial PM2.5 may have a closer association with ACPA positivity than the other exposures. Again, similar findings were seen with the 40 U/ml threshold, though 60 U/ml results were imprecise. No clear association between ACPA and regional overall PM2.5 exposure was seen. CONCLUSIONS We noted positive associations between ACPA and industrial emissions of PM2.5 and SO2. Industrial PM2.5 exposure may play a particularly important role in this regard.

Abstract
During carcinogenesis, advanced tumors are surrounded by both stromal and immune cells, which support tumor development. In addition, inflammation and angiogenesis are processes that play important roles in the development of cancer, from the initiation of carcinogenesis, tumor in situ and advanced stages of cancer. During acute inflammation, vascular hyperpermeability allows inflammatory mediators and immune response cells, including leukocytes and monocytes/macrophages, to infiltrate the site of damage. As a factor that regulates vascular permeability, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) also plays a vital role as a multifunctional molecule and growth factor. Furthermore, stromal and immune cells secrete soluble factors that activate endothelial cells and favor their transmigration to eliminate the aggressive agent. In this review, we present a comprehensive view of both the relationship between chronic inflammation and angiogenesis during carcinogenesis and the participation of endothelial cells in the inflammatory process. In addition, the regulatory mechanisms that contribute to the endothelium returning to its basal permeability state after acute inflammation are discussed. Moreover, the manner in which immune cells participate in pathological angiogenesis release pro-angiogenic factors that contribute to early tumor vascularization, even before the angiogenic switch occurs, is also examined. Also, we discuss the role of hypoxia as a mechanism that drives the acquisition of tumor hallmarks that make certain cancers more aggressive. Finally, some combinations of therapies that inhibit the angiogenesis process and that may be a successful strategy for cancer patients are indicated.

Abstract
Dendritic cells (DCs) are key regulators of immune responses that operate at the interface between innate and adaptive immunity, and defects in DC functions contribute to the pathogenesis of a variety of disorders. For instance, cancer evolves in the context of limited DC activity, and some autoimmune diseases are initiated by DC-dependent antigen presentation. Thus, correcting aberrant DC functions stands out as a promising therapeutic paradigm for a variety of diseases, as demonstrated by an abundant preclinical and clinical literature accumulating over the past two decades. However, the therapeutic potential of DC-targeting approaches remains to be fully exploited in the clinic. Here, we discuss the unique features of DCs that underlie the high therapeutic potential of DC-targeting strategies and critically analyze the obstacles that have prevented the full realization of this promising paradigm.

Abstract
Autoimmune diseases (ADs) are a broad spectrum of disorders featured by the body's immune responses being directed against its own tissues, resulting in prolonged inflammation and subsequent tissue damage. Recently, the exposure to ambient air pollution has been implicated in the occurrence and development of ADs. Mechanisms linking air pollution exposures and ADs mainly include systemic inflammation, increased oxidative stress, epigenetic modifications induced by exposures and immune response caused by airway damage. The lung may be an autoimmunity initiation site in autoimmune diseases (ADs). Air pollutants can bind to the Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) to regulate Th17 and Treg cells. Oxidative stress and inducible bronchus associated lymphoid tissue caused by the pollutants can influence T, B cells, resulting in the production of proinflammatory cytokines. These cytokines stimulate B cell and dendritic cells, resulting in a lot of antibodies and self-reactive T lymphocytes. Moreover, air pollutants may induce epigenetic changes to contribute to ADs. In this review, we will concern the associations between air pollution and immune-inflammatory responses, as well as mechanisms linking air pollution exposure and autoimmunity. In addition, we focus on the potential roles of air pollution in major autoimmune diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), multiple sclerosis (MS), and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).

Abstract
Pollution has long been incriminated in many cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. More recently, studies evaluated the potential role for particulate pollutants in autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The incidence of RA was found to be higher in urban areas. Living near air pollution emitters was associated with higher risks of developing RA and of producing RA-specific autoantibodies. Nevertheless, no strong epidemiological evidence exists to link one or more specific air pollution particles to RA. The presence in the bronchi of lymphoid satellite islands (inducible bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue, iBALT) is strongly associated with both inflammatory lung disease and RA-associated lung disease. Diesel exhaust particles can stimulate iBALT formation. The induction by air pollution of an inflammatory environment with high citrullination levels in the lung may induce iBALT formation, thereby causing a transition toward a more specific immune response via the production of anti-citrullinated peptide antibodies. Air pollution not only triggers innate immune responses at the molecular level, increasing the levels of proinflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species, but is also involved in adaptive immune responses. Thus, via the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), diesel exhaust particles can trigger a T-cell switch to the Th17 profile. Finally, in the murine collagen-induced arthritis model, animals whose lymphocytes lack the AHR develop milder arthritis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), an immune-mediated inflammatory interstitial lung disease (ILD), can result from exposure to several well-recognized antigens. Despite antigen avoidance, progressive pulmonary fibrosis and death can occur, suggesting that additional factors may contribute to disease activity. We hypothesized that the presence of autoimmunity might impact clinical course in patients with HP. In this study, we examined an HP cohort to identify those with HP and autoimmune features (HPAF), and determine its prevalence and outcomes. METHODS The University of Chicago ILD registry was screened to identify patients with HP. Patients were characterized as HPAF if they had an autoimmune disease or features of autoimmunity, defined as the presence of specific connective tissue disease (CTD) symptoms and serologies. Demographics, clinical characteristics, and outcomes were compared between groups. Survival analysis was performed using Cox regression to identify predictors of transplant-free survival in this cohort. RESULTS One hundred twenty patients with chronic, fibrotic HP were identified. Of these, 18/120 (15%) were characterized as HPAF. Compared to those without evidence of autoimmunity, patients with HPAF had a higher proportion of females (54% vs. 83%, respectively; p = 0.02) but were otherwise similar with regard to clinical characteristics. The presence of autoimmunity was an independent predictor of increased mortality (HR 4.45; 95% CI 1.43-13.88; p = 0.01) after multivariable adjustment. CONCLUSIONS Fifteen percent of patients with chronic, fibrotic HP displayed evidence of a concurrent defined autoimmune disease or autoimmune features suggestive of CTD. The presence of autoimmunity in patients with chronic, fibrotic HP may portend a poorer prognosis. Future studies are needed to validate these findings and determine the impact of immunosuppressive treatment.

Abstract
Genetic predisposition and environmental factors influence the development of human autoimmune disease. Occupational exposure to crystalline silica (cSiO2) has been etiologically linked to increased incidence of autoimmunity, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that early repeated short-term cSiO2 exposure will modulate both latency and severity of autoimmunity in the lupus-prone female NZBWF1 mouse. Weekly intranasal exposure to cSiO2 (0.25 and 1.0 mg) for 4 wk beginning at 9 wk of age both reduced latency and increased intensity of glomerulonephritis. cSiO2 elicited robust inflammatory responses in the lungs as evidenced by extensive perivascular and peribronchial lymphoplasmacytic infiltration consisting of IgG-producing plasma cells, and CD45R+ and CD3+ lymphocytes that were highly suggestive of ectopic lymphoid tissue (ELT). In addition, there were elevated concentrations of immunoglobulins and the cytokines MCP-1, TNF-α and IL-6 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. cSiO2-associated kidney and lung effects paralleled dose-dependent elevations of autoantibodies and proinflammatory cytokines in plasma. Taken together, cSiO2-induced pulmonary inflammation and ectopic lymphoid neogenesis in the NZBWF1 mouse corresponded closely to systemic inflammatory and autoimmune responses as well as the early initiation of pathological outcomes in the kidney. These findings suggest that following airway exposure to crystalline silica, in mice genetically prone to SLE, the lung serves as a platform for triggering systemic autoimmunity and glomerulonephritis.

Abstract
Silica is a very common material that can be found in both crystalline and amorphous forms. Well-known toxicities of the lung can occur after exposure to the crystalline form of silica. However, the toxicities of the amorphous form of silica have not been thoroughly studied. The majority of in vivo studies of amorphous silica nanoparticles (NPs) were performed using an inhalation exposure method. Since silica NPs can be commonly administered through the skin, a study of dermal silica toxicity was necessary to determine any harmful effects from dermal exposures. The present study focused on the results of systemic toxicity after applying 20 nm colloidal silica NPs on rat skin for 90 days, in accordance with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development test guideline 411 with a good laboratory practice system. Unlike the inhalation route or gastrointestinal route, the contact of silica NPs through skin did not result in any toxicity or any change in internal organs up to a dose of 2,000 mg/kg in rats.

Abstract
Autoantibodies have been associated with human pathologies for a long time, particularly with autoimmune diseases (AIDs). Rheumatoid factor (RF) is known since the late 1930s to be associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The discovery of anticitrullinated protein antibodies in the last century has changed this and other posttranslational modifications (PTM) relevant to RA have since been described. Such PTM introduce neoepitopes in proteins that can generate novel autoantibody specificities. The recent recognition of these novel specificities in RA provides a unique opportunity to understand human B-cell development in vivo. In this paper, we will review the three of the main classes of PTMs already associated with RA: citrullination, carbamylation, and oxidation. With the advancement of research methodologies it should be expected that other autoantibodies against PTM proteins could be discovered in patients with autoimmune diseases. Many of such autoantibodies may provide significant biomarker potential.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A critical evaluation of scientific efforts is needed in times of modified evaluation criteria for academic personnel and institutions. METHODS Using scientometric benchmark procedures and density-equalizing mapping, we analysed the global scientific efforts on "silicosis" of the last 92 years focusing on geographical changes within the last 30 years, specifying the most productive authors, institutions, countries and the most successful cooperations. RESULTS The USA as the most productive supplier have established their position as center of international cooperation, followed in considerable distance by the United Kingdom, Germany and China. Asian countries, particularly China, catch up and are expected to excel the USA still in this decade. CONCLUSION The combination of scientometric procedures with density-equalizing mapping reveals a distinct global pattern of research productivity and citation activity. Modified h-index, citationrate and impact factor have to be discussed critically due to distortion by bias of self-citation, language and co-authorship.
