Relationship between vitamin D receptor gene polymorphisms and migraine without aura in an Iranian population

Exploring the Potential Consortium of Migraine and Periodontitis

Objectives

Various researches have shown periodontitis to share common pathophysiological pathways with systemic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and osteoporosis and recently neurological disorders. This article provides a narrative review summarizing the various linking mechanisms and the nature of association between two multifactorial diseases-periodontitis and migraine.

Materials and Methods

A literature search was performed for articles related to periodontitis and migraine up till the year 2023 which yielded totally 14 articles. There were only three randomized controlled clinical trials; therefore, we were unable to conduct a systematic review and focused on a narrative review. The keywords searched were "migraine", "periodontitis" and "biomarkers" in PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, and Embase databases. Any article related to the association of periodontitis and migraine and the dental management of subjects with headache disorders were included and studies with migraine and other dental diseases were excluded.

Results

It is found that the occurrence of periodontitis and migraine are associated with each other. There is reasonable evidence to believe that periodontitis and migraine are linked by direct and indirect mechanisms which can eventually lead to chronic inflammatory conditions like periodontitis worsening neurovascular conditions such as migraine. However, upon detailed analysis it was found that the strength of association is weak owing to the presences of various common confounding and risk factors.

Conclusions

The association between periodontitis and migraine cannot be denied, however, not all the criteria are fulfilled while examining the nature of association and future long-term studies are required to prove the same. Clinical Relevance. Various studies have reported poor periodontal health in patients with migraine. The risk of exacerbation of migraine also increases in subject undergoing dental therapy if the triggering factors are manipulated. Hence, knowing the precise pathophysiologic mechanisms linking both the diseases would be favorable in planning treatment protocols for subjects with migraine.

Vitamin D receptor and binding protein genes variants in patients with migraine

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES

Several studies have shown a relationship between vitamin D and migraine, including the association between decreased serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D in patients with migraine and the positive effects of vitamin D supplementations in the therapy of this disease. Two single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene, VDR rs2228570, and VDR rs731236 have shown an association with migraine risk in a previous case-control association study, while an exome sequencing study identified a rare variant in GC vitamin D binding protein gene. This study aims to look for the association between several common variants in these two genes and the risk for migraine.

METHODS

We genotyped 290 patients diagnosed with migraine and 300 age-matched controls using specific TaqMan assays for VDR rs2228570, VDR rs731236, VDR rs7975232, VDR rs739837, VDR rs78783628, GC rs7041, and GC rs4588 SNVs.

RESULTS

We did not find an association between these SNVs and the risk for migraine. None of these SNVs were related to the positivity of a family history of migraine or with the presence of aura. The VDR rs731236A allele showed a significant association with the triggering of migraine attacks by ethanol (Pc = 0.007).

CONCLUSIONS

In summary, the results of the current study suggest a lack of association between common SNVs in the VDR and GC gene and the risk of developing migraine. The possible relationship between VDR rs731236 and the triggering of migraine episodes with ethanol deserves future studies.

Genetic Variability in Vitamin D Receptor and Migraine Susceptibility: A Southeastern European Case-Control Study

Migraine is a common primary headache disorder with both environmental and genetic inputs. Cumulative evidence indicates an association between vitamin D and headache. Unravelling the precise role of vitamin D and its receptor in the pathophysiology of migraine can eventually contribute to more efficient prevention and management of this headache disorder. The aim of the study was to investigate the relation of the three most studied VDR variants, i.e., FokI (rs2228570), TaqI (rs731236) and BsmI (rs1544410), with migraine susceptibility and distinct clinical phenotypes in a Southeastern European case-control population residing in Greece. DNA was extracted from 191 unrelated patients diagnosed with migraine and 265 headache-free controls and genotyped using real-time PCR (LightSNiP assays) followed by melting curve analysis. Genotype frequency distribution analysis of the TaqI and BsmI variants showed a statistically significant difference between migraine cases and controls. In addition, subgroup analyses revealed a significant association between all three studied VDR variants, particularly with a migraine without aura subtype. Therefore, the current study provides supporting evidence for a possible association of VDR variants with migraines, particularly migraine without aura susceptibility in Southeastern Europeans residing in Greece, further reinforcing the emerging role of vitamin D and its receptor in migraines.

Migraine and thyroid dysfunction: Co-occurrence, shared genes and biological mechanisms

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Migraine and thyroid dysfunction, particularly hypothyroidism, are common medical conditions and are known to have high heritability. Thyroid function measures, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (fT4), are also known to be genetically influenced. Although observational epidemiological studies report an increased co-occurrence of migraine and thyroid dysfunction, a clear and combined interpretation of the findings is currently lacking. A narrative review is provided of the epidemiological and genetic association evidence linking migraine, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and thyroid hormones TSH and fT4.

METHODS

An extensive literature search was conducted in the PubMed database for epidemiological, candidate gene and genome-wide association studies using the terms migraine, headache, thyroid hormones, TSH, fT4, thyroid function, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

RESULTS

Epidemiological studies suggest a bidirectional relationship between migraine and thyroid dysfunction. However, the nature of the relationship remains unclear, with some studies suggesting migraine increases the risk for thyroid dysfunction whilst other studies suggest the reverse. Early candidate gene studies have provided nominal evidence for MTHFR and APOE, whilst more recently genome-wide association studies have provided robust evidence for THADA and ITPK1 being associated with both migraine and thyroid dysfunction.

CONCLUSIONS

These genetic associations improve our understanding of the genetic relationship between migraine and thyroid dysfunction, provide an opportunity to develop biomarkers to identify migraine patients most likely to benefit from thyroid hormone therapy, and indicate that further cross-trait genetic studies have excellent potential to provide biological insight into their relationship and inform clinical interventions.

Relationship Between Vitamin D Receptor Gene BsmI Polymorphism and Fibromyalgia Syndrome

Purpose

Vitamin D receptor (VDR) has been proposed as a possible marker for fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). The purpose of this study is to characterize the expression pattern of BsmI polymorphism (rs1544410) in the VDR gene in women with FMS and the genotype-phenotype association.

Methods

A total of 105 FMS patients and 105 controls were included in this study. VDR gene BsmI polymorphism was assessed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymerase (RFLP) method.

Results

There was no significant difference in the frequency distribution of both genotypes and alleles for VDR gene BsmI polymorphism between FMS patients and controls (p>0.05). The frequencies of BB, Bb, and bb in the VDR gene BsmI polymorphism were 19%, 43%, and 37% in patients, while in controls were 22.9%, 55.2%, and 21.9%. However, we did not find any significant association between the clinical symptoms of this disease and VDR BsmI genotypes among FMS patients (p>0.05).

Conclusions

The relationship between the VDR gene BsmI polymorphism and FMS could not be determined in this study. However, further studies with a larger sample size may be required to show a relation between the VDR gene BsmI polymorphism and FMS.

Vitamin D Receptor and Binding Protein Gene Variants in Patients with Essential Tremor

Several studies have shown an association between some variants in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and the GC vitamin D binding protein (GC) genes with the risk for Parkinson's disease or other neurological disorders. VDR rs2228570 has shown an association with essential tremor (ET) in a previous study. The aim of this study is to look for the association between several common variants in these genes and the risk for ET. We genotyped 272 patients diagnosed with familial ET and 272 age-matched controls using specific TaqMan assays for VDR rs2228570, VDR rs731236, VDR rs7975232, VDR rs739837, VDR rs78783628, GC rs7041, and GC rs4588 single nucleotide variants (SNVs). We found an association between GC rs7041 SNV and ET using recessive, codominant, and allelic models. Despite our results did not find an association between VDR rs2228570 and ET, the pooled data with those by a previous report suggest this association under recessive, codominant, and allelic models. None of the SNVs studied was related to the age at onset of tremor in ET patients. Data from the current study suggest an association between GC rs7041 and VDR rs2228570 SNVs and ET risk.

VDR Gene Polymorphisms and Cluster Headache Susceptibility: Case-Control Study in a Southeastern European Caucasian Population

Cluster headache (CH) is a severe primary headache disorder with a genetic component, as indicated by family and twin studies. Diurnal and seasonal rhythmicity are key features of the disease and might be related to vitamin D, as low vitamin D levels have been observed in patients with cluster headache. In addition, the vitamin D receptor (VDR) occurs in brain areas and particularly in the hypothalamus. The aim of the present case-control study was to investigate the association of cluster headache susceptibility and clinical phenotypes with the VDR gene polymorphisms FokI, BsmI and TaqI in a Southeastern European Caucasian population. DNA was extracted from 131 unrelated CH patients and 282 non-headache controls and genotyped using real-time PCR (melting curve analysis). Linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis confirmed that BsmI and TaqI, both located in the 3'UTR of the VDR gene, are in strong LD. Genotype and allele frequency distribution analysis of the VDR FokI, BsmI, and TaqI polymorphisms showed no statistically significant difference between cases and controls, whereas haplotype analysis indicated that the TAC haplotype might be associated with decreased cluster headache susceptibility. Intra-patient analysis according to diverse clinical phenotypes showed an association of the BsmI GG and TaqI TT genotypes with more frequent occurrence of CH attacks in this cohort. Therefore, a possible association was observed between VDR gene polymorphisms BsmI and TaqI or a linked locus and susceptibility for cluster headache development and altered clinical phenotypes in the Southeastern European Caucasian study population. Further large-scale replication studies are needed to validate these findings.

The role of obesity and vitamin D deficiency in primary headaches in childhood

This study evaluates the role of obesity, overweight and vitamin D deficiency in primary headaches in childhood. This retrospective observational study included pediatric patients aged 5-17 years admitted to the pediatric neurology clinic with headaches between January 2015 and August 2018 and diagnosed with primary headache based on ICHD III-beta criteria. The control group consisted of healthy children without headache admitted to the pediatric outpatient clinic for check-ups before engaging in athletic or school activities. The control and patient groups were at the same risk of low 25(OH)D3 levels. The study population was divided into three groups-patients with migraine (group A), patients with tension-type headache (TTH) (group B) and the control group (group C). Participants' demographic data, medical histories, physical examination findings and laboratory results were retrieved retrospectively from the patient charts. BMI was significantly higher in patients with primary headache, the risk of primary headache increasing in patients with a BMI in excess of 25. Comparison of the patients with primary headache and the control group revealed lower 25(OH)D levels in the primary headache group, although the difference was not statistically significant. Girls with primary headache had significantly lower 25(OH)D levels than boys. A relationship may be present between overweight, obesity and primary headache, while female gender may be suggested as a negative factor for primary headache. Patients should be advised to lose weight if BMI indicates overweight or obesity.

The Role of Vitamin D in Primary Headache-from Potential Mechanism to Treatment

Some studies have suggested a link between vitamin D and headache; however, the underlying physiological mechanisms are unclear. We aimed to summarize the available evidence on the relationship between vitamin D and the various subtypes of primary headaches, including migraines and tension-type headaches. All articles concerning the association between primary headache and vitamin D published up to October 2019 were retrieved by searching clinical databases, including: EMBASE, MEDLINE, PubMed, Google scholar, and the Cochrane library. All types of studies (i.e., observational, cross-sectional, case-control, and clinical trials) were included. We identified 22 studies investigating serum vitamin D levels in association with headaches. Eight studies also evaluated the effect of vitamin D supplementation on the various headache parameters. Among them, 18 studies showed a link between serum vitamin D levels and headaches, with the strongest connection reported between serum vitamin D levels and migraine. Overall, there is not enough evidence to recommend vitamin D supplementation to all headache patients, but the current literature indicates that it may be beneficial in some patients suffering headaches, mainly migraineurs, to reduce the frequency of headaches, especially in those with vitamin D deficiency.

Efficacy of Topiramate Alone and Topiramate Plus Vitamin D3 in the Prophylaxis of Pediatric Migraine: A Randomized Clinical Trial

OBJECTIVE

Topiramate is effective in the prevention of pediatric migraine, and studies show that vitamin D₃ supplementation might also be useful in the treatment of adult migraineurs with a normal vitamin D₃ level. The present study aimed at comparing the efficacy and safety of topiramate plus vitamin D₃ and topiramate alone in the prophylaxis of pediatric migraine.

MATERIALS & METHODS

In a single-blinded, randomized, clinical trial, 5-15-year-old children with migraine headaches, referred to the Pediatric Neurology Clinic of Shahid Sadoughi Medical Sciences University, Yazd, Iran from January 2016 to January 2017, were randomly allocated to receive 2 mg/kg/day of topiramate or 2 mg/kg/day of topiramate plus one 500,000 IU vitamin D₃ pearl weekly for two consecutive months.Primary outcomes were the reduction of monthly frequency, severity, duration, and the disability score of migraine, and the secondary outcomes included a good response to treatment (more than 50% reduction in monthly headache frequency) and a lack of clinical adverse events.

RESULTS

Totally, 31 female and 26 male children with the mean age of 10.02±2.11 years were evaluated. Both drugs were effective in the reduction of monthly frequency, severity, duration, and disability for headaches. Nevertheless, the combination of topiramate and vitamin D₃ was more effective than topiramate alone in reducing the monthly headaches frequency (6.12±1.26 vs. 9.87±2.44 times, P=0.01) and disability score (19.24±6.32 vs. 22.11±7.91, P=0.02). Good response to treatment was observed in 60.7% and 75.9% of the subjects in the topiramate alone and topiramate plus vitamin D₃ groups, respectively, and topiramate plus vitaminD3 was more effective (P= 0.01). Transient mild side effects were observed in 14.3% and 17.2% of the subjects in the topiramate alone and topiramate plus vitamin D₃ groups, respectively (P=0.8).

CONCLUSION

A combination of topiramate and vitamin D₃ might be considered safe and more effective than topiramate alone in the prophylaxis of pediatric migraine.

The potential role of serum vitamin D level in migraine headache: a case-control study

PURPOSE

Much concern was directed toward exploring the relationship between vitamin D and migraine. There is strong evidence that vitamin D supplementation can decrease frequency, severity, and duration of migraine headache attacks. The aim of this work was to investigate the difference in serum levels of 25 (OH)-vitamin D between patients with migraine and healthy controls, to determine the differences in headache characteristics according to vitamin D status, and to correlate serum 25 (OH)-vitamin D level with duration, frequency, and severity of migraine headache attacks.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

This is a case-control study conducted on 40 patients diagnosed with migraine and 40 healthy controls. History was taken from patients with migraine regarding headache characteristics. Migraine severity scale (MIGSEV) and Headache Impact Test-6 (HIT-6) were used for migraine assessment. Serum 25(OH)-vitamin D was measured for all patients and controls using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

RESULTS

Patients with migraine had significantly lower 25(OH)-vitamin D serum level in comparison to controls (P-value=0.019). The incidence of aura, phonophobia/photophobia, autonomic manifestations, allodynia, and resistance to medications were significantly higher in migraineurs with vitamin D deficiency than those with normal vitamin D. There was a statistically significant negative correlation between 25(OH)-vitamin D serum level and attack duration in hours (P-value˂0.001), frequency of the attacks/month (P-value˂0.001), MIGSEV scale (P-value=0.001), and HIT-6 scale (P-value=0.001).

CONCLUSION

Patients with migraine had significant vitamin D deficiency compared to healthy controls. Such deficiency significantly affects headache characteristics, duration, frequency, and severity of headache attacks.

Vitamin D in migraine headache: a comprehensive review on literature

INTRODUCTION

As a primary headache, migraine has been established as the first leading disability cause worldwide in the subjects who aged less than 50 years. A variety of dietary supplements have been introduced for migraine complementary treatment. As an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent, vitamin D is one of these agents which has been of interest in recent years. Although higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency has been highlighted among migraineurs compared to controls, there is not any consensus in prescribing vitamin D in clinical practice. Therefore, in the current review, in addition to observational and case-control studies, we also included clinical trials concerning the effects of vitamin D supplementation on migraine/headache.

METHODS

Based on a PubMed/MEDLINE and ScienceDirect database search, this review study includes published articles up to June 2019 concerning the association between migraine/headache and vitamin D status or supplementation.

RESULTS

The percentage of subjects with vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency among migraineurs and headache patients has been reported to vary between 45 and 100%. In a number of studies, vitamin D level was negatively correlated with frequency of headaches. The present findings show that supplementation with this vitamin in a dose of 1000-4000 IU/d could reduce the frequency of attacks in migraineurs.

CONCLUSION

It seems a high proportion of migraine patients might suffer from vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency. Further, the current evidence shows that in addition to routine drug therapy, vitamin D administration might reduce the frequency of attacks in migraineurs. However, these results have yet to be confirmed.

Vitamin D deficiency in patients with cluster headache: a preliminary study

Background

Cluster headache is famous for attacks with seasonal and diurnal periodicity. This diurnal and seasonal variation might be related to sunlight and vitamin D metabolism. We investigated the serum vitamin D levels in patients with cluster headache.

Methods

We enrolled patients with cluster headache and age- and sex-matched migraineurs and normal controls. From October 2016 to March 2018, non-fasting serum 25(OH)D concentrations were measured using a chemiluminescent immunoassay. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as a concentration < 20 ng/mL.

Results

The study enrolled 28 patients with cluster headache, 36 migraineurs, and 36 normal controls. In the patients with cluster headache, the serum 25(OH)D concentration averaged 14.0 ± 3.9 ng/mL and 92.8% had vitamin D deficiency. There was no significant difference among the patients with cluster headache, migraineurs, and controls. In the patients with cluster headache, there was no difference in the serum 25(OH)D concentrations between men and women, cluster and remission periods, first and recurrent attack, presence and absence of daily or seasonal periodicity, and 3-month recurrence. In the 14 patients with seasonal periodicity, patients with periodicity of winter to spring had a trend of lower serum 25(OH)D concentrations than those with periodicity of summer to autumn (12.30 ± 1.58 vs. 16.96 ± 4.69 ng/mL, p = 0.097).

Conclusions

Vitamin D deficiency is common in patients with cluster headache, but the role of vitamin D deficiency is uncertain, except for its seasonal influence.

Low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D is associated with higher risk of frequent headache in middle-aged and older men

Vitamin D has been suggested to have a role in various neurovascular diseases, but the data regarding headache is inconclusive. Our aim was to investigate the associations between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], a marker for vitamin D status, and risk of frequent headache. The study population consisted of 2601 men from the population-based Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study (KIHD) from eastern Finland, aged 42–60 years in 1984–1989. The cross-sectional associations with prevalence of self-reported frequent headache (defined as weekly or daily headaches) were estimated with multivariable-adjusted odds ratios. The average serum 25(OH) concentration was 43.4 nmol/L (SD 18.9, min-max 7.8–136.1 nmol/L). A total of 250 men (9.6%) reported frequent headache. The average serum 25(OH)D concentration among those with frequent headache was 38.3 nmol/L (SD 18.8) and 43.9 nmol/L (SD 18.9) among those without frequent headache, after adjustment for age and year and month of blood draw (P for difference <0.001). After multivariable adjustments, those in the lowest vs. the highest serum 25(OH)D quartile had 113% (95% CI 42, 218%; P for trend <0.001) higher odds for frequent headache. In conclusion, low serum 25(OH)D concentration was associated with markedly higher risk of frequent headache in men.

Is Vitamin D Deficiency Implicated in Autonomic Dysfunction?

Dysautonomia, dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, presents with heterogeneous clinical features from an imbalanced regulation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Low Vitamin D levels can explain the heterogeneous clinical features of migraine headaches, cardiac and gastrointestinal dysfunction, and oxidative stress evident in dysautonomia patients. The role of Vitamin D in modulating pain sensitivity has been recently established. However, there is a lack of research and understanding regarding the association between Vitamin D deficiency and autonomic dysfunction. Vitamin D is a neuroactive hormone that modulates autonomic balance, regulating the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, and has multisystem benefits. The following review explores the literature and addresses the relationship between Vitamin D deficiency and autonomic dysfunction. Overall, this literature review implicates Vitamin D deficiency in autonomic dysfunction and elucidates the potential therapeutic role of Vitamin D in autonomic disorders. PubMed search was performed for English articles from 1996 to 2016. Following keywords: Vitamin D, autonomic dysfunction and orthostatic hypotension, Vitamin D receptor, migraine and traumatic brain injury, Vitamin D, cardiac and gastrointestinal disease, Vitamin D, glutathione, oxidative stress, and serotonin were included. Only articles reporting primary data relevant to the above question were included in the study.

Relationship between FokI polymorphism in the vitamin D receptor gene and fibromyalgia syndrome

AIM

The aim of this study was to evaluate the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene FokI polymorphism frequencies distribution in subjects with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) compared to healthy controls.

METHOD

Using a case-control design, 100 female patients, who were diagnosed with FMS according to the American College of Rheumatology criteria and 100 healthy female subjects were enrolled in this study. FokI polymorphisms of the VDR gene were analyzed by restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) in both groups.

RESULTS

No significant differences in the frequencies distribution of both genotype and alleles of the FokI polymorphism in the VDR gene were observed between the two groups.

CONCLUSION

The relationship between VDR gene FokI polymorphism and FMS, particularly in Turkish women, could not be determined in this study. However, further studies with larger patient numbers may be needed to prove a relation between VDR gene polymorphism and FMS.

No evidence for an association of vitamin D deficiency and migraine: a systematic review of the literature

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with a number of human disorders, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, frailty, and infections. Since an association between vitamin D and migraine has also been recently speculated, we performed an electronic search on Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science using the keywords "migraine" and "vitamin D," "25OH-D" "cholecalciferol," "ergocalciferol," with no language or date restriction. The electronic search allowed identifying seven studies (3 observational, 2 cross-sectional, and 2 case reports). The two case reports, including four women, showed favourable effects of vitamin D supplementation on migraine severity, but these studies were small and not placebo controlled. As regards the three observational studies, vitamin D deficiency was observed in 13.2 to 14.8% of migraine patients, and these rates do not differ from those reported in the general population (i.e., vitamin D deficiency between 22 and 42%). The results of the two cross-sectional studies are even more controversial, since no association was found between vitamin D status and migraine in both trials. In conclusion, the current evidence suggests that the association between migraine and vitamin D lacks reliable scientific support.

Effect of vitamin D therapy in addition to amitriptyline on migraine attacks in pediatric patients

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of supplementary vitamin D therapy in addition to amitriptyline on the frequency of migraine attacks in pediatric migraine patients. Fifty-three children 8-16 years of age and diagnosed with migraine following the International Headache Society 2005 definition, which includes childhood criteria, were enrolled. Patients were classified into four groups on the basis of their 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels. Group 1 had normal 25(OH)D levels and received amitriptyline therapy alone; group 2 had normal 25(OH)D levels and received vitamin D supplementation (400 IU/day) plus amitriptyline; group 3 had mildly deficient 25(OH)D levels and received amitriptyline plus vitamin D (800 IU/day); and group 4 had severely deficient 25(OH)D levels and was given amitriptyline plus vitamin D (5000 IU/day). All groups were monitored for 6 months, and the number of migraine attacks before and during treatment was determined. Calcium, phosphorus alkaline phosphatase, parathormone, and 25(OH)D levels were also determined before and during treatment. Results were compared between the groups. Data obtained from the groups were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance. The number of pretreatment attacks in groups 1 to 4 was 7±0.12, 6.8±0.2, 7.3±0.4, and 7.2±0.3 for 6 months, respectively (all P>0.05). The number of attacks during treatment was 3±0.25, 1.76±0.37 (P<0.05), 2.14±0.29 (P<0.05), and 1.15±0.15 (P<0.05), respectively. No statistically significant differences in calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, or parathormone levels were observed (P>0.05). Vitamin D given in addition to anti-migraine treatment reduced the number of migraine attacks.

Vitamin D status in migraine patients: a case-control study

Background. There have been few studies on the relation between vitamin D and migraine. We investigated the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in migraine patients and compared it with a control group. We also evaluated the relationship of vitamin D deficiency with severity of migraine. Methods. 105 newly diagnosed migraine patients and 110 controls, matched for age, sex, socioeconomic status, education, and sun exposure, were enrolled during the spring of 2011. 25-Hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D] plasma levels were measured by chemiluminescence immunoassay. Results. The mean ± SE concentration of 25(OH)D was 13.55 ± 0.91 ng/mL in cases and 13.19 ± 1.19 ng/mL in controls. There was no significant difference in 25(OH)D concentration between cases and controls. We found no relationship between severity of headache and 25(OH)D status. Conclusions. We did not find any association between migraine and vitamin D status; also, severity of headaches was not related to 25(OH)D level. Further studies with larger sample sizes are required to confirm our results.
